BAN ² Garde mes préceptes, et tu auras la vie.
Garde mes leçons comme la prunelle de tes yeux.

KJV ² Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.

WLC ² שְׁמֹ֣ר מִצְוֺתַ֣י וֶחְיֵ֑ה וְ֝תוֹרָתִ֗י כְּאִישׁ֥וֹן עֵינֶֽיךָ׃

BAN ³ Attache-les à tes doigts ;
Inscris-les sur la table de ton coeur.

KJV ³ Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.

WLC ³ קָשְׁרֵ֥ם עַל־ אֶצְבְּעֹתֶ֑יךָ כָּ֝תְבֵ֗ם עַל־ ל֥וּחַ לִבֶּֽךָ׃

BAN ⁴ Dis à la sagesse : Tu es ma soeur !
Et appelle l'intelligence ton amie ;

KJV ⁴ Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:

WLC ⁴ אֱמֹ֣ר לַֽ֭חָכְמָה אֲחֹ֣תִי אָ֑תְּ וּ֝מֹדָ֗ע לַבִּינָ֥ה תִקְרָֽא׃

BAN ⁵ Pour te mettre en garde contre la femme d'autrui,
Contre l'étrangère aux paroles flatteuses.

KJV ⁵ That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.

WLC ⁵ לִ֭שְׁמָרְךָ מֵאִשָּׁ֣ה זָרָ֑ה מִ֝נָּכְרִיָּ֗ה אֲמָרֶ֥יהָ הֶחֱלִֽיקָה׃

BAN ⁶ Car, à la fenêtre de ma maison,
A travers mon treillis, je regardais ;

KJV ⁶ For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,

WLC ⁶ כִּ֭י בְּחַלּ֣וֹן בֵּיתִ֑י בְּעַ֖ד אֶשְׁנַבִּ֣י נִשְׁקָֽפְתִּי׃

BAN ⁷ Je vis parmi les simples,
J'aperçus parmi les jeunes gens un jeune homme dépourvu de sens.

KJV ⁷ And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,

WLC ⁷ וָאֵ֤רֶא בַפְּתָאיִ֗ם אָ֘בִ֤ינָה בַבָּנִ֗ים נַ֣עַר חֲסַר־ לֵֽב׃

BAN ⁸ Il passait dans la rue, près de son coin ;
Il marchait dans la direction de sa maison.

KJV ⁸ Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,

WLC ⁸ עֹבֵ֣ר בַּ֭שּׁוּק אֵ֣צֶל פִּנָּ֑הּ וְדֶ֖רֶךְ בֵּיתָ֣הּ יִצְעָֽד׃

BAN ⁹ C'était au crépuscule, au déclin du jour,
Au sein de la nuit, dans l'obscurité.

KJV ⁹ In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:

WLC ⁹ בְּנֶֽשֶׁף־ בְּעֶ֥רֶב י֑וֹם בְּאִישׁ֥וֹן לַ֝֗יְלָה וַאֲפֵלָֽה׃

BAN ¹⁰ Et voici une femme vint au-devant de lui,
Avec la mise d'une courtisane et au coeur astucieux.

KJV ¹⁰ And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.

WLC ¹⁰ וְהִנֵּ֣ה אִ֭שָּׁה לִקְרָאת֑וֹ שִׁ֥ית ז֝וֹנָ֗ה וּנְצֻ֥רַת לֵֽב׃

BAN ¹¹ Elle était bruyante, sans retenue,
Et ses pieds ne se tenaient pas dans sa maison.

KJV ¹¹ (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:

WLC ¹¹ הֹמִיָּ֣ה הִ֣יא וְסֹרָ֑רֶת בְּ֝בֵיתָ֗הּ לֹא־ יִשְׁכְּנ֥וּ רַגְלֶֽיהָ׃

BAN ¹² Tantôt dans la rue, tantôt sur les places,
Elle était aux aguets à chaque coin.

KJV ¹² Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)

WLC ¹² פַּ֤עַם ׀ בַּח֗וּץ פַּ֥עַם בָּרְחֹב֑וֹת וְאֵ֖צֶל כָּל־ פִּנָּ֣ה תֶאֱרֹֽב׃

BAN ¹³ Elle le saisit et l'embrassa,
Et d'un visage effronté, lui dit :

KJV ¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,

WLC ¹³ וְהֶחֱזִ֣יקָה בּ֭וֹ וְנָ֣שְׁקָה־ לּ֑וֹ הֵעֵ֥זָה פָ֝נֶ֗יהָ וַתֹּ֣אמַר לֽוֹ׃

BAN ¹⁴ Je devais un sacrifice d'actions de grâces ;
Aujourd'hui je me suis acquittée de mes voeux.

KJV ¹⁴ I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.

WLC ¹⁴ זִבְחֵ֣י שְׁלָמִ֣ים עָלָ֑י הַ֝יּ֗וֹם שִׁלַּ֥מְתִּי נְדָרָֽי׃

BAN ¹⁵ Voilà pourquoi je suis sortie à ta rencontre,
Pour chercher ton visage, et je t'ai trouvé.

KJV ¹⁵ Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.

WLC ¹⁵ עַל־ כֵּ֭ן יָצָ֣אתִי לִקְרָאתֶ֑ךָ לְשַׁחֵ֥ר פָּ֝נֶ֗יךָ וָאֶמְצָאֶֽךָּ׃

BAN ¹⁶ J'ai garni ma couche de coussins,
De tapis bigarrés de fil d'Egypte ;

KJV ¹⁶ I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.

WLC ¹⁶ מַ֭רְבַדִּים רָבַ֣דְתִּי עַרְשִׂ֑י חֲ֝טֻב֗וֹת אֵט֥וּן מִצְרָֽיִם׃

BAN ¹⁷ J'ai parfumé mon lit
De myrrhe, d'aloès et de cinnamone.

KJV ¹⁷ I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

WLC ¹⁷ נַ֥פְתִּי מִשְׁכָּבִ֑י מֹ֥ר אֲ֝הָלִ֗ים וְקִנָּמֽוֹן׃

BAN ¹⁸ Viens, rassasions-nous de délices jusqu'au matin !
Livrons-nous joyeusement à l'amour.

KJV ¹⁸ Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.

WLC ¹⁸ לְכָ֤ה נִרְוֶ֣ה דֹ֭דִים עַד־ הַבֹּ֑קֶר נִ֝תְעַלְּסָ֗ה בָּאֳהָבִֽים׃

BAN ¹⁹ Car mon mari n'est pas à la maison ;
Il est parti pour un long voyage,

KJV ¹⁹ For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:

WLC ¹⁹ כִּ֤י אֵ֣ין הָאִ֣ישׁ בְּבֵית֑וֹ הָ֝לַ֗ךְ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ מֵרָחֽוֹק׃

BAN ²⁰ Il a emporté avec lui le sac d'argent.
Il ne reviendra chez lui qu'à la pleine lune.

KJV ²⁰ He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.

WLC ²⁰ צְֽרוֹר־ הַ֭כֶּסֶף לָקַ֣ח בְּיָד֑וֹ לְי֥וֹם הַ֝כֵּ֗סֶא יָבֹ֥א בֵיתֽוֹ׃

BAN ²¹ Elle le séduisit par son éloquence ;
Elle l'entraîna par ses paroles doucereuses.

KJV ²¹ With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.

WLC ²¹ הִ֭טַּתּוּ בְּרֹ֣ב לִקְחָ֑הּ בְּחֵ֥לֶק שְׂ֝פָתֶ֗יהָ תַּדִּיחֶֽנּוּ׃

BAN ²² Il se mit tout à coup à la suivre,
Comme le boeuf qui va à la boucherie,
Et comme un homme garrotté [qui s'avance] vers le châtiment de l'insensé,

KJV ²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;

WLC ²² ה֤וֹלֵ֥ךְ אַחֲרֶ֗יהָ פִּ֫תְאֹ֥ם כְּ֭שׁוֹר אֶל־ טָ֣בַח יָב֑וֹא וּ֝כְעֶ֗כֶס אֶל־ מוּסַ֥ר אֱוִֽיל׃

BAN ²³ Jusqu'à ce qu'une flèche lui transperce le foie ;
Comme l'oiseau qui se précipite vers le filet,
Sans savoir qu'il y va de sa vie.

KJV ²³ Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

WLC ²³ עַ֤ד יְפַלַּ֪ח חֵ֡ץ כְּֽבֵד֗וֹ כְּמַהֵ֣ר צִפּ֣וֹר אֶל־ פָּ֑ח וְלֹֽא־ יָ֝דַ֗ע כִּֽי־ בְנַפְשׁ֥וֹ הֽוּא׃

BAN ²⁴ Et maintenant, enfants, écoutez-moi ;
Prêtez l'oreille aux paroles de ma bouche !

KJV ²⁴ Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.

WLC ²⁴ וְעַתָּ֣ה בָ֭נִים שִׁמְעוּ־ לִ֑י וְ֝הַקְשִׁ֗יבוּ לְאִמְרֵי־ פִֽי׃

BAN ²⁵ Que votre coeur ne s'écarte pas vers les voies d'une telle femme !
Ne va pas t'égarer dans ses sentiers !

KJV ²⁵ Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.

WLC ²⁵ אַל־ יֵ֣שְׂטְ אֶל־ דְּרָכֶ֣יהָ לִבֶּ֑ךָ אַל־ תֵּ֝תַע בִּנְתִיבוֹתֶֽיהָ׃

BAN ²⁶ Car elle en a fait tomber beaucoup, blessés à mort ;
Ils sont nombreux, ceux qu'elle a tués.

KJV ²⁶ For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.

WLC ²⁶ כִּֽי־ רַבִּ֣ים חֲלָלִ֣ים הִפִּ֑ילָה וַ֝עֲצֻמִ֗ים כָּל־ הֲרֻגֶֽיהָ׃

BAN ²⁷ Sa maison est le chemin du sépulcre ;
Il descend aux demeures de la mort.

KJV ²⁷ Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

WLC ²⁷ דַּרְכֵ֣י שְׁא֣וֹל בֵּיתָ֑הּ יֹ֝רְד֗וֹת אֶל־ חַדְרֵי־ מָֽוֶת׃

BAN ¹ La Sagesse ne crie-t-elle pas ?
L'intelligence ne fait-elle pas entendre sa voix ?

KJV ¹ Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?

WLC ¹ הֲלֹֽא־ חָכְמָ֥ה תִקְרָ֑א וּ֝תְבוּנָ֗ה תִּתֵּ֥ן קוֹלָֽהּ׃

BAN ² Elle se tient au sommet des éminences, auprès des routes,
A l'endroit où se croisent les chemins.

KJV ² She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.

WLC ² בְּרֹאשׁ־ מְרוֹמִ֥ים עֲלֵי־ דָ֑רֶךְ בֵּ֖ית נְתִיב֣וֹת נִצָּֽבָה׃

BAN ³ A côté des portes, devant la ville,
Près des entrées, elle s'écrie

KJV ³ She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.

WLC ³ לְיַד־ שְׁעָרִ֥ים לְפִי־ קָ֑רֶת מְב֖וֹא פְתָחִ֣ים תָּרֹֽנָּה׃

BAN ⁴ C'est à vous, hommes, que je parle ;
Ma voix s'adresse aux fils des hommes.

KJV ⁴ Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.

WLC ⁴ אֲלֵיכֶ֣ם אִישִׁ֣ים אֶקְרָ֑א וְ֝קוֹלִ֗י אֶל־ בְּנֵ֥י אָדָֽם׃

BAN ⁵ Vous, simples, apprenez la prudence !
Et vous, insensés, apprenez le bon sens.

KJV ⁵ O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

WLC ⁵ הָבִ֣ינוּ פְתָאיִ֣ם עָרְמָ֑ה וּ֝כְסִילִ֗ים הָבִ֥ינוּ לֵֽב׃

BAN ⁶ Ecoutez ! Je dirai des choses excellentes ;
Ce qui sortira de mes lèvres est la droiture même.

KJV ⁶ Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.

WLC ⁶ שִׁ֭מְעוּ כִּֽי־ נְגִידִ֣ים אֲדַבֵּ֑ר וּמִפְתַּ֥ח שְׂ֝פָתַ֗י מֵישָׁרִֽים׃

BAN ⁷ Car mon palais profère ce qui est vrai,
Mes lèvres ont en abomination l'iniquité.

KJV ⁷ For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

WLC ⁷ כִּֽי־ אֱ֭מֶת יֶהְגֶּ֣ה חִכִּ֑י וְתוֹעֲבַ֖ת שְׂפָתַ֣י רֶֽשַׁע׃

BAN ⁸ Tous les discours de ma bouche sont selon la justice ;
Il n'y a rien en eux de tortueux, ni de détourné.

KJV ⁸ All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.

WLC ⁸ בְּצֶ֥דֶק כָּל־ אִמְרֵי־ פִ֑י אֵ֥ין בָּ֝הֶ֗ם נִפְתָּ֥ל וְעִקֵּֽשׁ׃

BAN ⁹ Tous ils sont clairs pour l'homme intelligent ;
Ils sont droits pour ceux qui possèdent la connaissance.

KJV ⁹ They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.

WLC ⁹ כֻּלָּ֣ם נְ֭כֹחִים לַמֵּבִ֑ין וִֽ֝ישָׁרִ֗ים לְמֹ֣צְאֵי דָֽעַת׃

BAN ¹⁰ Préférez ma discipline à l'argent,
Et la sagesse à l'or fin.

KJV ¹⁰ Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.

WLC ¹⁰ קְחֽוּ־ מוּסָרִ֥י וְאַל־ כָּ֑סֶף וְ֝דַ֗עַת מֵחָר֥וּץ נִבְחָֽר׃

BAN ¹¹ Car la sagesse vaut mieux que le corail,
Et aucun trésor ne saurait l'égaler.

KJV ¹¹ For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

WLC ¹¹ כִּֽי־ טוֹבָ֣ה חָ֭כְמָה מִפְּנִינִ֑ים וְכָל־ חֲ֝פָצִ֗ים לֹ֣א יִֽשְׁווּ־ בָֽהּ׃

BAN ¹² Moi, la Sagesse, j'habite avec la prudence,
Et je possède la science des avis sensés.

KJV ¹² I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.

WLC ¹² אֲ‍ֽנִי־ חָ֭כְמָה שָׁכַ֣נְתִּי עָרְמָ֑ה וְדַ֖עַת מְזִמּ֣וֹת אֶמְצָֽא׃

BAN ¹³ La crainte de l'Eternel, c'est de haïr le mal ;
L'orgueil, l'arrogance, la voie du mal
Et la bouche perverse, voilà ce que je hais.

KJV ¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

WLC ¹³ יִֽרְאַ֣ת יְהוָה֮ שְֽׂנֹ֫את רָ֥ע גֵּ֘אָ֤ה וְגָא֨וֹן ׀ וְדֶ֣רֶךְ רָ֭ע וּפִ֨י תַהְפֻּכ֬וֹת שָׂנֵֽאתִי׃

BAN ¹⁴ A moi le conseil et le succès !
Je suis l'intelligence ; à moi la force !

KJV ¹⁴ Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.

WLC ¹⁴ לִֽי־ עֵ֭צָה וְתוּשִׁיָּ֑ה אֲנִ֥י בִ֝ינָ֗ה לִ֣י גְבוּרָֽה׃

BAN ¹⁵ C'est par moi que règnent les rois
Et que les princes décrètent ce qui est juste.

KJV ¹⁵ By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.

WLC ¹⁵ בִּ֭י מְלָכִ֣ים יִמְלֹ֑כוּ וְ֝רוֹזְנִ֗ים יְחֹ֣קְקוּ צֶֽדֶק׃

BAN ¹⁶ Par moi gouvernent les chefs,
Les grands, tous les juges de la terre.

KJV ¹⁶ By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.

WLC ¹⁶ בִּ֭י שָׂרִ֣ים יָשֹׂ֑רוּ וּ֝נְדִיבִ֗ים כָּל־ שֹׁ֥פְטֵי צֶֽדֶק׃

BAN ¹⁷ J'aime ceux qui m'aiment ;
Ceux qui me cherchent me trouveront.

KJV ¹⁷ I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

WLC ¹⁷ אֲ֭נִי אֵהָ֑ב וּ֝מְשַׁחֲרַ֗י יִמְצָאֻֽנְנִי׃

BAN ¹⁸ La richesse et l'honneur sont auprès de moi,
Les biens durables et la justice.

KJV ¹⁸ Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.

WLC ¹⁸ עֹֽשֶׁר־ וְכָב֥וֹד אִתִּ֑י ה֥וֹן עָ֝תֵ֗ק וּצְדָקָֽה׃

BAN ¹⁹ Mon fruit vaut mieux que l'or, que l'or pur ;
Ce que je rapporte est préférable à l'argent de choix.

KJV ¹⁹ My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.

WLC ¹⁹ ט֣וֹב פִּ֭רְיִי מֵחָר֣וּץ וּמִפָּ֑ז וּ֝תְבוּאָתִ֗י מִכֶּ֥סֶף נִבְחָֽר׃

BAN ²⁰ Je marche dans les voies de la justice,
Au milieu des sentiers du droit,

KJV ²⁰ I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:

WLC ²⁰ בְּאֹֽרַח־ צְדָקָ֥ה אֲהַלֵּ֑ך בְּ֝ת֗וֹךְ נְתִיב֥וֹת מִשְׁפָּֽט׃

BAN ²¹ Pour mettre ceux qui m'aiment en possession de biens réels,
Et je remplis leurs trésors.

KJV ²¹ That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.

WLC ²¹ לְהַנְחִ֖יל אֹהֲבַ֥י ׀ יֵ֑שׁ וְאֹצְרֹ֖תֵיהֶ֣ם אֲמַלֵּֽא׃

BAN ²² L'Eternel m'a possédée comme prémices de ses voies,
Comme première de ses oeuvres, dès les temps anciens.

KJV ²² The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.

WLC ²² יְֽהוָ֗ה קָ֭נָנִי רֵאשִׁ֣ית דַּרְכּ֑וֹ קֶ֖דֶם מִפְעָלָ֣יו מֵאָֽז׃

BAN ²³ J'ai été établie dès les temps éternels,
Dès le commencement, avant la création de la terre.

KJV ²³ I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.

WLC ²³ מֵ֭עוֹלָם נִסַּ֥כְתִּי מֵרֹ֗אשׁ מִקַּדְמֵי־ אָֽרֶץ׃

BAN ²⁴ Quand il n'y avait point encore d'abîmes, j'ai été enfantée,
Avant les sources aux eaux abondantes.

KJV ²⁴ When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.

WLC ²⁴ בְּאֵין־ תְּהֹמ֥וֹת חוֹלָ֑לְתִּי בְּאֵ֥ין מַ֝עְיָנ֗וֹת נִכְבַּדֵּי־ מָֽיִם׃

BAN ²⁵ Avant que les montagnes fussent fondées,
Avant les collines, j'ai été enfantée,

KJV ²⁵ Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:

WLC ²⁵ בְּטֶ֣רֶם הָרִ֣ים הָטְבָּ֑עוּ לִפְנֵ֖י גְבָע֣וֹת חוֹלָֽלְתִּי׃

BAN ²⁶ Avant qu'il eût créé la terre et les campagnes,
Et l'ensemble de la poussière du monde.

KJV ²⁶ While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.

WLC ²⁶ עַד־ לֹ֣א עָ֭שָׂה אֶ֣רֶץ וְחוּצ֑וֹת וְ֝רֹ֗אשׁ עָפְר֥וֹת תֵּבֵֽל׃

BAN ²⁷ J'étais là quand il disposa les cieux,
Quand il traça un cercle sur la surface de l'abîme.

KJV ²⁷ When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:

WLC ²⁷ בַּהֲכִינ֣וֹ שָׁ֭מַיִם שָׁ֣ם אָ֑נִי בְּח֥וּקוֹ ח֝֗וּג עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י תְהֽוֹם׃

BAN ²⁸ Quand il fixa les nuages en haut,
Quand les sources de l'abîme jaillirent,

KJV ²⁸ When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:

WLC ²⁸ בְּאַמְּצ֣וֹ שְׁחָקִ֣ים מִמָּ֑עַל בַּ֝עֲז֗וֹז עִינ֥וֹת תְּהוֹם׃

BAN ²⁹ Quand il assigna à la mer une limite
Que ses eaux ne devaient pas franchir,
Quand il traça les fondements de la terre,

KJV ²⁹ When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:

WLC ²⁹ בְּשׂ֘וּמ֤וֹ לַיָּ֨ם ׀ חֻקּ֗וֹ וּ֭מַיִם לֹ֣א יַֽעַבְרוּ־ פִ֑יו בְּ֝חוּק֗וֹ מ֣וֹסְדֵי אָֽרֶץ׃

BAN ³⁰ J'étais à ses côtés, son ouvrière,
J'étais toute allégresse, jour après jour,
M'égayant devant lui sans cesse,

KJV ³⁰ Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;

WLC ³⁰ וָֽאֶהְיֶ֥ה אֶצְל֗וֹ אָ֫מ֥וֹן וָֽאֶהְיֶ֣ה שַׁ֭עֲשֻׁעִים י֤וֹם ׀ י֑וֹם מְשַׂחֶ֖קֶת לְפָנָ֣יו בְּכָל־ עֵֽת׃

KJV ³² Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.

BAN ³³ Ecoutez la répréhension et devenez sages,
Et ne la repoussez pas !

KJV ³³ Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.

WLC ³³ שִׁמְע֖וּ מוּסָ֥ר וַחֲכָ֗מוּ וְאַל־ תִּפְרָֽעוּ׃

BAN ³⁴ Heureux l'homme qui m'écoute,
Qui veille à ma porte chaque jour,
Et qui garde le seuil de ma maison !

KJV ³⁴ Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.

BAN ³⁵ Car qui me trouve, a trouvé la vie
Et obtient la faveur de l'Eternel.

KJV ³⁵ For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.

WLC ³⁵ כִּ֣י מֹ֭צְאִי חַיִּ֑ים וַיָּ֥פֶק רָ֝צ֗וֹן מֵיְהוָֽה׃

BAN ³⁶ Mais qui me manque, se fait tort à soi-même ;
Tous ceux qui me haïssent aiment la mort.

KJV ³⁶ But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

BAN ¹ La Sagesse a bâti sa maison,
Elle s'est taillé ses colonnes, au nombre de sept ;

KJV ¹ Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:

WLC ¹ חָ֭כְמוֹת בָּנְתָ֣ה בֵיתָ֑הּ חָצְבָ֖ה עַמּוּדֶ֣יהָ שִׁבְעָֽה׃

BAN ² Elle a apprêté ses viandes, préparé son vin ;
Déjà elle a dressé sa table.

KJV ² She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.

WLC ² טָבְחָ֣ה טִ֭בְחָהּ מָסְכָ֣ה יֵינָ֑הּ אַ֝֗ף עָֽרְכָ֥ה שֻׁלְחָנָֽהּ׃

BAN ³ Elle a envoyé ses servantes ;
Elle appelle du sommet des hauteurs de la ville :

KJV ³ She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,

WLC ³ שָֽׁלְחָ֣ה נַעֲרֹתֶ֣יהָ תִקְרָ֑א עַל־ גַּ֝פֵּ֗י מְרֹ֣מֵי קָֽרֶת׃

BAN ⁴ Que le simple se retire ici !
A qui manque de sens elle dit :

KJV ⁴ Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,

WLC ⁴ מִי־ פֶ֭תִי יָסֻ֣ר הֵ֑נָּה חֲסַר־ לֵ֝֗ב אָ֣מְרָה לּֽוֹ׃

BAN ⁵ Venez ! mangez de mon pain
Et buvez du vin que j'ai préparé !

KJV ⁵ Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.

WLC ⁵ לְ֭כוּ לַחֲמ֣וּ בְֽלַחֲמִ֑י וּ֝שְׁת֗וּ בְּיַ֣יִן מָסָֽכְתִּי׃

BAN ⁶ Simples, renoncez [à la sottise], et vous vivrez.
Marchez droit dans la voie de l'intelligence !

KJV ⁶ Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

BAN ⁷ Qui reprend un moqueur s'attire un affront ;
Qui censure un méchant en retire un outrage.

KJV ⁷ He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.

WLC ⁷ יֹ֤סֵ֨ר ׀ לֵ֗ץ לֹקֵ֣חַֽ ל֣וֹ קָל֑וֹן וּמוֹכִ֖יחַ לְרָשָׁ֣ע מוּמֽוֹ׃

BAN ⁸ Ne reprends pas le moqueur, car il te haïra ;
Reprends le sage, et il t'aimera.

KJV ⁸ Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

WLC ⁸ אַל־ תּ֣וֹכַח לֵ֭ץ פֶּן־ יִשְׂנָאֶ֑ךָּ הוֹכַ֥ח לְ֝חָכָ֗ם וְיֶאֱהָבֶֽךָּ׃

BAN ⁹ Donne au sage, et il sera plus sage encore ;
Instruis le juste, il en augmentera son savoir.

KJV ⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

WLC ⁹ תֵּ֣ן לְ֭חָכָם וְיֶחְכַּם־ ע֑וֹד הוֹדַ֥ע לְ֝צַדִּ֗יק וְי֣וֹסֶף לֶֽקַח׃

BAN ¹⁰ Le commencement de la sagesse, c'est la crainte de l'Eternel,
La connaissance du Très-Saint, voilà l'intelligence.

KJV ¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

BAN ¹¹ Car, par moi, tes jours seront multipliés,

BAN ¹² Si tu es sage, c'est pour toi que tu es sage ;
Mais si tu es moqueur, tu en porteras seul la peine.

KJV ¹² If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

BAN ¹³ La femme folle est turbulente ;
[Elle est] stupide, et ne sait rien.

KJV ¹³ A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.

BAN ¹⁴ Elle se place à la porte de sa demeure,

BAN ¹⁸ Et il ne sait pas que c'est le lieu des ombres,
Et que ses conviés sont dans le séjour des morts.

KJV ¹⁸ But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

WLC ¹⁸ וְֽלֹא־ יָ֭דַע כִּֽי־ רְפָאִ֣ים שָׁ֑ם בְּעִמְקֵ֖י שְׁא֣וֹל קְרֻאֶֽיהָ׃

BAN ¹ Un fils sage fait la joie de son père,
Mais un fils insensé, le chagrin de sa mère.

KJV ¹ The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

BAN ³ L'Eternel ne permet pas que le juste ait faim,
Mais il repousse l'avidité des méchants.

KJV ³ The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

WLC ³ לֹֽא־ יַרְעִ֣יב יְ֭הוָה נֶ֣פֶשׁ צַדִּ֑יק וְהַוַּ֖ת רְשָׁעִ֣ים יֶהְדֹּֽף׃

BAN ⁴ Celui qui travaille d'une main paresseuse devient pauvre,
Mais la main des diligents enrichit.

KJV ⁴ He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

WLC ⁴ רָ֗אשׁ עֹשֶׂ֥ה כַף־ רְמִיָּ֑ה וְיַ֖ד חָרוּצִ֣ים תַּעֲשִֽׁיר׃

BAN ⁵ Qui amasse en été est un fils avisé,
Qui dort pendant la moisson est un fils qui fait honte.

KJV ⁵ He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

WLC ⁵ אֹגֵ֣ר בַּ֭קַּיִץ בֵּ֣ן מַשְׂכִּ֑יל נִרְדָּ֥ם בַּ֝קָּצִ֗יר בֵּ֣ן מֵבִֽישׁ׃

BAN ⁶ Il y a des bénédictions sur la tête du juste,
Mais la bouche des méchants recouvre la violence.

KJV ⁶ Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

WLC ⁶ בְּ֭רָכוֹת לְרֹ֣אשׁ צַדִּ֑יק וּפִ֥י רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים יְכַסֶּ֥ה חָמָֽס׃

BAN ⁷ La mémoire du juste est en bénédiction,
Mais le nom des méchants tombe en poussière.

KJV ⁷ The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

WLC ⁷ זֵ֣כֶר צַ֭דִּיק לִבְרָכָ֑ה וְשֵׁ֖ם רְשָׁעִ֣ים יִרְקָֽב׃

BAN ⁸ Le coeur sage accepte les préceptes,
Mais l'homme aux lèvres insensées court à sa perte.

KJV ⁸ The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.

WLC ⁸ חֲכַם־ לֵ֭ב יִקַּ֣ח מִצְוֺ֑ת וֶאֱוִ֥יל שְׂ֝פָתַ֗יִם יִלָּבֵֽט׃

BAN ⁹ Qui marche dans l'intégrité, marche en sûreté ;
Qui suit des chemins tortueux, sera découvert.

KJV ⁹ He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.

WLC ⁹ הוֹלֵ֣ךְ בַּ֭תֹּם יֵ֣לֶךְ בֶּ֑טַח וּמְעַקֵּ֥שׁ דְּ֝רָכָ֗יו יִוָּדֵֽעַ׃

BAN ¹⁰ Qui cligne de l'oeil cause du chagrin,
Et l'homme aux lèvres insensées court à sa perte.

KJV ¹⁰ He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.

WLC ¹⁰ קֹ֣רֵֽץ עַ֭יִן יִתֵּ֣ן עַצָּ֑בֶת וֶאֱוִ֥יל שְׂ֝פָתַ֗יִם יִלָּבֵֽט׃

BAN ¹¹ La bouche du juste est une source de vie,
Mais la bouche des méchants recouvre la violence.

KJV ¹¹ The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

BAN ¹² La haine excite des disputes,
Mais l'amour couvre tous les péchés.

KJV ¹² Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

BAN ¹³ La sagesse se trouve sur les lèvres de l'homme sensé,
Et la verge sur le dos de celui qui manque de sens.

KJV ¹³ In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

WLC ¹³ בְּשִׂפְתֵ֣י נָ֭בוֹן תִּמָּצֵ֣א חָכְמָ֑ה וְ֝שֵׁ֗בֶט לְגֵ֣ו חֲסַר־ לֵֽב׃

BAN ¹⁴ Les sages tiennent en réserve leur savoir,
Mais la bouche du sot est une ruine imminente.

KJV ¹⁴ Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

WLC ¹⁴ חֲכָמִ֥ים יִצְפְּנוּ־ דָ֑עַת וּפִֽי־ אֱ֝וִיל מְחִתָּ֥ה קְרֹבָֽה׃

BAN ¹⁵ Les biens du riche sont sa ville forte ;
La ruine des misérables, c'est leur pauvreté.

KJV ¹⁵ The rich man's wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.

WLC ¹⁵ ה֣וֹן עָ֭שִׁיר קִרְיַ֣ת עֻזּ֑וֹ מְחִתַּ֖ת דַּלִּ֣ים רֵישָֽׁם׃

BAN ¹⁶ Le salaire du juste est une source de vie,
Le revenu du méchant une source de péché.

KJV ¹⁶ The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.

WLC ¹⁶ פְּעֻלַּ֣ת צַדִּ֣יק לְחַיִּ֑ים תְּבוּאַ֖ת רָשָׁ֣ע לְחַטָּֽאת׃

BAN ¹⁷ Qui tient compte de la discipline suit le chemin de la vie,
Mais qui néglige la réprimande s'égare.

KJV ¹⁷ He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.

WLC ¹⁷ אֹ֣רַח לְ֭חַיִּים שׁוֹמֵ֣ר מוּסָ֑ר וְעוֹזֵ֖ב תּוֹכַ֣חַת מַתְעֶֽה׃

BAN ¹⁸ Qui dissimule la haine a des lèvres menteuses,
Et qui répand la calomnie est un sot.

KJV ¹⁸ He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.

WLC ¹⁸ מְכַסֶּ֣ה שִׂ֭נְאָה שִׂפְתֵי־ שָׁ֑קֶר וּמוֹצִ֥א דִ֝בָּ֗ה ה֣וּא כְסִֽיל׃

BAN ¹⁹ Qui parle beaucoup ne manque pas de pécher,
Mais qui retient ses lèvres est un homme avisé.

KJV ¹⁹ In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

WLC ¹⁹ בְּרֹ֣ב דְּ֭בָרִים לֹ֣א יֶחְדַּל־ פָּ֑שַׁע וְחֹשֵׂ֖ךְ שְׂפָתָ֣יו מַשְׂכִּֽיל׃

BAN ²⁰ La langue du juste est un argent de choix ;
Le coeur des méchants vaut peu de chose.

KJV ²⁰ The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.

WLC ²⁰ כֶּ֣סֶף נִ֭בְחָר לְשׁ֣וֹן צַדִּ֑יק לֵ֖ב רְשָׁעִ֣ים כִּמְעָֽט׃

BAN ²¹ Les lèvres du juste en repaissent beaucoup,
Mais les sots meurent faute de bon sens.

KJV ²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.

WLC ²¹ שִׂפְתֵ֣י צַ֭דִּיק יִרְע֣וּ רַבִּ֑ים וֶֽ֝אֱוִילִ֗ים בַּחֲסַר־ לֵ֥ב יָמֽוּתוּ׃

BAN ²² C'est la bénédiction de l'Eternel qui enrichit,
Et la peine qu'on se donne n'y ajoute rien.

KJV ²² The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

WLC ²² בִּרְכַּ֣ת יְ֭הוָה הִ֣יא תַעֲשִׁ֑יר וְלֹֽא־ יוֹסִ֖ף עֶ֣צֶב עִמָּֽהּ׃

BAN ²³ Commettre le crime, c'est le plaisir de l'insensé ;
La sagesse est celui de l'homme avisé.

KJV ²³ It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.

WLC ²³ כִּשְׂח֣וֹק לִ֭כְסִיל עֲשׂ֣וֹת זִמָּ֑ה וְ֝חָכְמָ֗ה לְאִ֣ישׁ תְּבוּנָֽה׃

BAN ²⁴ Ce que craint le méchant, c'est là ce qui lui arrive ;
Mais [Dieu] accorde aux justes leurs désirs.

KJV ²⁴ The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.

WLC ²⁴ מְגוֹרַ֣ת רָ֭שָׁע הִ֣יא תְבוֹאֶ֑נּוּ וְתַאֲוַ֖ת צַדִּיקִ֣ים יִתֵּֽן׃

BAN ²⁵ Quand la tempête a passé, le méchant n'est plus,
Mais le juste possède un fondement éternel.

KJV ²⁵ As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

BAN ²⁶ Tel le vinaigre aux dents et la fumée aux yeux,
Tel est le paresseux pour qui l'envoie.

KJV ²⁶ As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.

WLC ²⁶ כַּחֹ֤מֶץ ׀ לַשִּׁנַּ֗יִם וְכֶעָשָׁ֥ן לָעֵינָ֑יִם כֵּ֥ן הֶ֝עָצֵ֗ל לְשֹׁלְחָֽיו׃

BAN ²⁷ La crainte de l'Eternel prolonge les jours,
Mais les années des méchants sont abrégées.

KJV ²⁷ The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

WLC ²⁷ יִרְאַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה תּוֹסִ֣יף יָמִ֑ים וּשְׁנ֖וֹת רְשָׁעִ֣ים תִּקְצֹֽרְנָה׃

BAN ²⁸ L'attente du juste devient une joie,
Mais l'espoir des méchants périt.

KJV ²⁸ The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.

WLC ²⁸ תּוֹחֶ֣לֶת צַדִּיקִ֣ים שִׂמְחָ֑ה וְתִקְוַ֖ת רְשָׁעִ֣ים תֹּאבֵֽד׃

BAN ²⁹ La voie de l'Eternel, pour l'innocent, est une forteresse,
Mais une ruine pour les ouvriers d'iniquité.

KJV ²⁹ The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

WLC ²⁹ מָע֣וֹז לַ֭תֹּם דֶּ֣רֶךְ יְהוָ֑ה וּ֝מְחִתָּ֗ה לְפֹ֣עֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃

BAN ³⁰ Le juste ne sera jamais ébranlé,
Mais les méchants n'habiteront pas le pays.

KJV ³⁰ The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.

WLC ³⁰ צַדִּ֣יק לְעוֹלָ֣ם בַּל־ יִמּ֑וֹט וּ֝רְשָׁעִ֗ים לֹ֣א יִשְׁכְּנוּ־ אָֽרֶץ׃

BAN ³¹ La bouche du juste produit la sagesse,
Mais la langue perverse sera retranchée.

KJV ³¹ The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

WLC ³¹ פִּֽי־ צַ֭דִּיק יָנ֣וּב חָכְמָ֑ה וּלְשׁ֥וֹן תַּ֝הְפֻּכ֗וֹת תִּכָּרֵֽת׃

BAN ³² Les lèvres du juste connaissent ce qui est agréable,
Mais la bouche des méchants [ne procure que] perversité.

KJV ³² The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.

WLC ³² שִׂפְתֵ֣י צַ֭דִּיק יֵדְע֣וּן רָצ֑וֹן וּפִ֥י רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים תַּהְפֻּכֽוֹת׃

BAN ¹ La fausse balance est en abomination à l'Eternel,
Mais le poids juste lui est agréable.

KJV ¹ A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.

WLC ¹ מֹאזְנֵ֣י מִ֭רְמָה תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה וְאֶ֖בֶן שְׁלֵמָ֣ה רְצוֹנֽוֹ׃

BAN ² Vienne l'orgueil, vient aussi l'ignominie,
Mais la sagesse est avec les humbles.

KJV ² When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

WLC ² בָּֽא־ זָ֭דוֹן וַיָּבֹ֣א קָל֑וֹן וְֽאֶת־ צְנוּעִ֥ים חָכְמָֽה׃

BAN ³ L'intégrité des hommes droits les conduit,
Mais la perversité des perfides les détruit.

KJV ³ The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.

WLC ³ תֻּמַּ֣ת יְשָׁרִ֣ים תַּנְחֵ֑ם וְסֶ֖לֶף בּוֹגְדִ֣ים

BAN ⁴ La richesse ne sert de rien au jour de la colère,
Mais la justice délivre de la mort.

KJV ⁴ Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.

WLC ⁴ לֹא־ יוֹעִ֣יל ה֭וֹן בְּי֣וֹם עֶבְרָ֑ה וּ֝צְדָקָ֗ה תַּצִּ֥יל מִמָּֽוֶת׃

BAN ⁵ La justice de l'homme intègre aplanit son sentier,
Mais par sa méchanceté tombe le méchant.

KJV ⁵ The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

WLC ⁵ צִדְקַ֣ת תָּ֭מִים תְּיַשֵּׁ֣ר דַּרְכּ֑וֹ וּ֝בְרִשְׁעָת֗וֹ יִפֹּ֥ל רָשָֽׁע׃

BAN ⁶ La justice de l'homme droit le délivre,
Mais les perfides sont pris par leur avidité.

KJV ⁶ The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.

WLC ⁶ צִדְקַ֣ת יְ֭שָׁרִים תַּצִּילֵ֑ם וּ֝בְהַוַּ֗ת בֹּגְדִ֥ים יִלָּכֵֽדוּ׃

BAN ⁷ Quand meurt l'homme méchant, son attente périt,
Et l'espoir des iniques est anéanti.

KJV ⁷ When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.

WLC ⁷ בְּמ֤וֹת אָדָ֣ם רָ֭שָׁע תֹּאבַ֣ד תִּקְוָ֑ה וְתוֹחֶ֖לֶת אוֹנִ֣ים אָבָֽדָה׃

BAN ⁸ Le juste échappe à la détresse,
Et le méchant prend sa place.

KJV ⁸ The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.

WLC ⁸ צַ֭דִּיק מִצָּרָ֣ה נֶחֱלָ֑ץ וַיָּבֹ֖א רָשָׁ֣ע תַּחְתָּֽיו׃

BAN ⁹ Par sa bouche l'impie ruine son prochain,
Et par leur sagesse les justes échappent.

KJV ⁹ An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.

WLC ⁹ בְּפֶ֗ה חָ֭נֵף יַשְׁחִ֣ת רֵעֵ֑הוּ וּ֝בְדַ֗עַת צַדִּיקִ֥ים יֵחָלֵֽצוּ׃

BAN ¹⁰ Du bonheur des justes la cité se réjouit,
Et quand périssent les méchants, il y a de l'allégresse.

KJV ¹⁰ When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.

WLC ¹⁰ בְּט֣וּב צַ֭דִּיקִים תַּעֲלֹ֣ץ קִרְיָ֑ה וּבַאֲבֹ֖ד רְשָׁעִ֣ים רִנָּֽה׃

BAN ¹¹ Par la bénédiction des justes une cité s'élève,
Mais par les paroles des méchants elle est détruite.

KJV ¹¹ By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

WLC ¹¹ בְּבִרְכַּ֣ת יְ֭שָׁרִים תָּר֣וּם קָ֑רֶת וּבְפִ֥י רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים תֵּהָרֵֽס׃

BAN ¹² Qui méprise son prochain est dépourvu de sens,
Mais l'homme avisé garde le silence.

KJV ¹² He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.

WLC ¹² בָּז־ לְרֵעֵ֥הוּ חֲסַר־ לֵ֑ב וְאִ֖ישׁ תְּבוּנ֣וֹת יַחֲרִֽישׁ׃

BAN ¹³ Qui s'en va détractant, dévoile les secrets,
Mais l'homme au coeur fidèle tient la chose cachée.

KJV ¹³ A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

WLC ¹³ הוֹלֵ֣ךְ רָ֭כִיל מְגַלֶּה־ סּ֑וֹד וְנֶאֱמַן־ ר֝֗וּחַ מְכַסֶּ֥ה דָבָֽר׃

BAN ¹⁴ Faute de direction une nation déchoit,
Mais le salut est dans la multitude des conseillers.

KJV ¹⁴ Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

WLC ¹⁴ בְּאֵ֣ין תַּ֭חְבֻּלוֹת יִפָּל־ עָ֑ם וּ֝תְשׁוּעָ֗ה בְּרֹ֣ב יוֹעֵֽץ׃

BAN ¹⁵ Il se fait un grand tort, celui qui cautionne autrui,
Mais qui hait ceux qui frappent dans la main, est en sûreté.

KJV ¹⁵ He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.

WLC ¹⁵ רַע־ יֵ֭רוֹעַ כִּי־ עָ֣רַב זָ֑ר וְשֹׂנֵ֖א תֹקְעִ֣ים בּוֹטֵֽחַ׃

BAN ¹⁶ La femme gracieuse obtient l'honneur,
Et les violents obtiennent les richesses.

KJV ¹⁶ A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.

WLC ¹⁶ אֵֽשֶׁת־ חֵ֭ן תִּתְמֹ֣ךְ כָּב֑וֹד וְ֝עָרִיצִ֗ים יִתְמְכוּ־ עֹֽשֶׁר׃

BAN ¹⁷ L'homme bienfaisant se fait du bien à lui-même,
Mais le cruel trouble sa propre chair.

KJV ¹⁷ The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.

WLC ¹⁷ גֹּמֵ֣ל נַ֭פְשׁוֹ אִ֣ישׁ חָ֑סֶד וְעֹכֵ֥ר שְׁ֝אֵר֗וֹ אַכְזָרִֽי׃

BAN ¹⁸ Le méchant fait un profit trompeur,
Mais qui sème la justice a une récompense assurée.

KJV ¹⁸ The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.

WLC ¹⁸ רָשָׁ֗ע עֹשֶׂ֥ה פְעֻלַּת־ שָׁ֑קֶר וְזֹרֵ֥עַ צְ֝דָקָ֗ה שֶׂ֣כֶר אֱמֶֽת׃

BAN ¹⁹ La vraie justice mène à la vie,
Mais qui poursuit le mal court à sa mort.

KJV ¹⁹ As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.

WLC ¹⁹ כֵּן־ צְדָקָ֥ה לְחַיִּ֑ים וּמְרַדֵּ֖ף רָעָ֣ה לְמוֹתֽוֹ׃

BAN ²⁰ Les coeurs tortueux sont en abomination à l'Eternel,
Mais ceux qui marchent dans l'intégrité lui sont agréables.

KJV ²⁰ They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the LORD: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.

WLC ²⁰ תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה עִקְּשֵׁי־ לֵ֑ב וּ֝רְצוֹנ֗וֹ תְּמִ֣ימֵי דָֽרֶךְ׃

BAN ²¹ Certainement le méchant ne restera pas impuni,
Et la race des justes sera délivrée.

KJV ²¹ Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.

WLC ²¹ יָ֣ד לְ֭יָד לֹא־ יִנָּ֣קֶה רָּ֑ע וְזֶ֖רַע צַדִּיקִ֣ים נִמְלָֽט׃

KJV ²² As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.

WLC ²² נֶ֣זֶם זָ֭הָב בְּאַ֣ף חֲזִ֑יר אִשָּׁ֥ה יָ֝פָ֗ה וְסָ֣רַת טָֽעַם׃

BAN ²³ Le souhait des justes ne tend qu'à ce qui est bon,
Mais l'attente des méchants, c'est la colère.

KJV ²³ The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.

WLC ²³ תַּאֲוַ֣ת צַדִּיקִ֣ים אַךְ־ ט֑וֹב תִּקְוַ֖ת רְשָׁעִ֣ים עֶבְרָֽה׃

BAN ²⁴ Tel dépense son bien, qui l'accroît davantage ;
Mais qui se prive de ce qui est juste, n'aboutit qu'à la misère.

KJV ²⁴ There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.

WLC ²⁴ יֵ֣שׁ מְ֭פַזֵּר וְנוֹסָ֥ף ע֑וֹד וְחוֹשֵׂ֥ךְ מִ֝יֹּ֗שֶׁר אַךְ־ לְמַחְסֽוֹר׃

BAN ²⁵ L'âme bienfaisante sera dans l'abondance,
Et qui arrose sera arrosé.

KJV ²⁵ The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

WLC ²⁵ נֶֽפֶשׁ־ בְּרָכָ֥ה תְדֻשָּׁ֑ן וּ֝מַרְוֶ֗ה גַּם־ ה֥וּא יוֹרֶֽא׃

BAN ²⁶ Le peuple maudit celui qui retient le blé,
Mais la bénédiction est sur la tête de celui qui le vend.

KJV ²⁶ He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.

WLC ²⁶ מֹ֣נֵֽעַ בָּ֭ר יִקְּבֻ֣הוּ לְא֑וֹם וּ֝בְרָכָ֗ה לְרֹ֣אשׁ מַשְׁבִּֽיר׃

BAN ²⁷ Qui recherche le bien, cherche la faveur ;
Mais le mal advient à qui le poursuit.

KJV ²⁷ He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.

WLC ²⁷ שֹׁ֣חֵֽר ט֭וֹב יְבַקֵּ֣שׁ רָצ֑וֹן וְדֹרֵ֖שׁ רָעָ֣ה תְבוֹאֶֽנּוּ׃

BAN ²⁸ Qui se confie en sa richesse tombera,
Mais les justes pousseront comme le feuillage.

KJV ²⁸ He that trusteth in his riches shall fall; but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

WLC ²⁸ בּוֹטֵ֣חַ בְּ֭עָשְׁרוֹ ה֣וּא יִפֹּ֑ל וְ֝כֶעָלֶ֗ה צַדִּיקִ֥ים יִפְרָֽחוּ׃

BAN ²⁹ Qui trouble sa maison a le vent pour héritage,
Et l'insensé devient l'esclave du sage.

KJV ²⁹ He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.

WLC ²⁹ עוֹכֵ֣ר בֵּ֭יתוֹ יִנְחַל־ ר֑וּחַ וְעֶ֥בֶד אֱ֝וִ֗יל לַחֲכַם־ לֵֽב׃

BAN ³⁰ Le fruit du juste est un arbre de vie,
Et le sage gagne les coeurs.

KJV ³⁰ The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

WLC ³⁰ פְּֽרִי־ צַ֭דִּיק עֵ֣ץ חַיִּ֑ים וְלֹקֵ֖חַ נְפָשׂ֣וֹת חָכָֽם׃

BAN ³¹ Voici, le juste a sa rétribution sur la terre ;
Combien plus le méchant et le pécheur !

KJV ³¹ Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.

WLC ³¹ הֵ֣ן צַ֭דִּיק בָּאָ֣רֶץ יְשֻׁלָּ֑ם אַ֝֗ף כִּֽי־ רָשָׁ֥ע וְחוֹטֵֽא׃

BAN ¹ Qui aime la discipline, aime la connaissance
Mais qui hait la réprimande, est stupide.

KJV ¹ Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.

WLC ¹ אֹהֵ֣ב מ֭וּסָר אֹ֣הֵֽב דָּ֑עַת וְשֹׂנֵ֖א תוֹכַ֣חַת בָּֽעַר׃
