Pr 7:1-12:1 (Catholique Crampon)

¹ Mon fils, retiens mes paroles, et garde avec toi mes préceptes.
² Observe mes préceptes, et tu vivras, garde mon enseignement comme la prunelle de tes yeux.
³ Lie-les sur tes doigts, écris-les sur la table de ton coeur.
⁴ Dis à la sagesse : Tu es ma soeur ! Et appelle l'intelligence ton amie,
⁵ pour qu'elle te préserve de la femme d'autrui, de l'étrangère qui fait entendre de douces paroles.
⁶ Etant à la fenêtre de ma maison, je regardais à travers le treillis.
⁷ J'aperçus parmi les insensés, je remarquai parmi les jeunes gens un garçon dépourvu de sens.
⁸ Il passait dans la rue, près du logis d'une étrangère, et il s'avançait vers sa demeure.
⁹ C'était au crépuscule, à la chute du jour, au milieu de la nuit et de l'obscurité.
¹⁰ Et voilà qu'une femme l'aborde, ayant la mise d'une courtisane et la dissimulation dans le coeur.
¹¹ Elle est impétueuse et indomptable ; ses pieds ne peuvent se reposer dans sa maison ;
¹² tantôt dans la rue, tantôt sur les places, et près de tous les angles, elle se tient aux aguets.
¹³ Elle saisit le jeune homme et l'embrasse, et avec un visage effronté lui dit :
¹⁴ "Je devais offrir des victimes pacifiques, aujourd'hui j'ai accompli mes voeux.
¹⁵ C'est pourquoi je suis sortie à ta rencontre, pour te chercher, et je t'ai trouvé.
¹⁶ J'ai garni mon lit de couvertures, de tapis de fil d'Égypte.
¹⁷ J'ai parfumé ma couche de myrrhe, d'aloès et de cinnamome.
¹⁸ Viens, enivrons-nous d'amour jusqu'au matin, livrons-nous aux délices de la volupté.
¹⁹ Car mon mari n'est pas à la maison, il est parti pour un lointain voyage ;
²⁰ il a pris avec lui le sac de l'argent, il ne reviendra à la maison qu'à la pleine lune."
²¹ Elle le séduit à force de paroles, elle l'entraîne par les paroles de ses lèvres ;
²² il se met aussitôt à la suivre, comme le boeuf qui va à la boucherie, comme l'insensé qui court au châtiment des entraves ;
²³ jusqu'à ce qu'une flèche lui perce le foie, comme l'oiseau qui se précipite dans le filet, sans savoir qu'il y va pour lui de sa vie.
²⁴ Et maintenant, mes fils, écoutez-moi, et soyez attentifs aux paroles de ma bouche.
²⁵ Que ton coeur ne se détourne pas vers ses voies, ne t'égare pas dans ses sentiers.
²⁶ Car elle a fait de nombreux blessés, et nombreuses ont été ses victimes.
²⁷ Sa maison est le chemin du schéol, qui descend au séjour de la mort.

Proverbes 8

¹ La sagesse ne crie-t-elle pas, l'intelligence n'élève-t-elle pas sa voix ?
² C'est au sommet des hauteurs, sur la route, à la jonction des chemins, qu'elle se place ;
³ près des portes, aux abords de la ville, à l'entrée des portes, elle fait entendre sa voix :
⁴ "Hommes, c'est à vous que je crie, et ma voix s'adresse aux enfants des hommes.
⁵ Simples, apprenez la prudence ; insensés, apprenez l'intelligence.
⁶ Écoutez, car j'ai à dire des choses magnifiques, et mes lèvres s'ouvrent pour enseigner ce qui est droit.
⁷ "Car ma bouche proclame la vérité, et mes lèvres ont l'iniquité en horreur.
⁸ Toutes les paroles de ma bouche sont justes : il n'y a en elles rien de faux ni de tortueux.
⁹ Toutes sont justes pour celui qui est intelligent, et droites pour ceux qui ont trouvé la science.
¹⁰ Recevez mon instruction plutôt que l'argent, et la science plutôt que l'or pur.
¹¹ Car la sagesse vaut mieux que les perles, et les objets les plus précieux ne l'égalent pas.
¹² "Moi, la sagesse, j'habite avec la prudence, et je possède la science de la réflexion.
¹³ La crainte de Yahweh, c'est la haine du mal ; l'arrogance et l'orgueil, la voie du mal et la bouche perverse, voilà ce que je hais.
¹⁴ Le conseil et le succès m'appartiennent ; je suis l'intelligence, la force est à moi.
¹⁵ Par moi les rois règnent, et les princes ordonnent ce qui est juste.
¹⁶ Par moi gouvernent les chefs, et les grands, ‒ tous les juges de la terre.
¹⁷ J'aime ceux qui m'aiment, et ceux qui me cherchent avec empressement me trouvent.
¹⁸ Avec moi sont les richesses et la gloire, les biens durables et la justice.
¹⁹ Mon fruit vaut mieux que l'or, que l'or pur, et ce qui vient de moi mieux que l'argent éprouvé.
²⁰ Je marche dans le chemin de la justice, au milieu des sentiers du jugement,
²¹ pour donner des biens à ceux qui m'aiment, et combler leurs trésors.
²² "Yahweh m'a possédée au commencement de ses voies, avant ses oeuvres les plus anciennes.
²³ J'ai été fondée dès l'éternité, dès le commencement, avant les origines de la terre.
²⁴ Il n'y avait point d'abîmes quand je fus enfantée, point de sources chargées d'eaux.
²⁵ Avant que les montagnes fussent affermies, avant les collines, j'étais enfantée.
²⁶ Lorsqu'il n'avait encore fait ni la terre, ni les plaines, ni les premiers éléments de la poussière du globe.
²⁷ Lorsqu'il disposa les cieux, j'étais là, lorsqu'il traça un cercle à la surface de l'abîme,
²⁸ lorsqu'il affermit les nuages en haut, et qu'il dompta les sources de l'abîme,
²⁹ lorsqu'il fixa sa limite à la mer, pour que les eaux n'en franchissent pas les bords, lorsqu'il posa les fondements de la terre.
³⁰ J'étais à l'oeuvre auprès de lui, me réjouissant chaque jour, et jouant sans cesse en sa présence,
³¹ jouant sur le globe de sa terre, et trouvant mes délices parmi les enfants des hommes.
³² "Et maintenant, mes fils, écoutez-moi ; heureux ceux qui gardent mes voies !
³³ Écoutez l'instruction pour devenir sages ; ne la rejetez pas.
³⁴ Heureux l'homme qui m'écoute, qui veille chaque jour à mes portes, et qui en garde les montants !
³⁵ Car celui qui me trouve a trouvé la vie, et il obtient la faveur de Yahweh.
³⁶ Mais celui qui m'offense blesse son âme ; tous ceux qui me haïssent aiment la mort."

Proverbes 9

¹ La sagesse a bâti sa maison, elle a taillé ses sept colonnes.
² Elle a immolé ses victimes, mêlé son vin, et dressé sa table.
³ Elle a envoyé ses servantes, elle appelle, au sommet des hauteurs de la ville :
⁴ "Que celui qui est simple entre ici !" Elle dit à celui qui est dépourvu de sens :
⁵ "Venez, mangez de mon pain, et buvez du vin que j'ai mêlé ;
⁶ quittez l'ignorance, et vous vivrez, et marchez dans la voie de l'intelligence."
⁷ Celui qui reprend le moqueur s'attire la raillerie, et celui qui réprimande le méchant s'attire l'outrage.
⁸ Ne reprends pas le moqueur, de peur qu'il ne te haïsse ; reprends le sage, et il t'aimera.
⁹ Donne au sage, et il deviendra plus sage ; instruis le juste, et il augmentera son savoir.
¹⁰ Le commencement de la sagesse, c'est la crainte de Yahweh ; et l'intelligence, c'est la science du Saint.
¹¹ Car par moi tes jours se multiplieront, par moi s'augmenteront les années de ta vie.
¹² Si tu es sage, tu es sage à ton profit ; si tu es moqueur, tu en porteras seul la peine.
¹³ La folie est une femme bruyante, stupide et ne sachant rien.
¹⁴ Elle s'est assise, à la porte de sa maison, sur un siège, dans les hauteurs de la ville,
¹⁵ pour inviter les passants qui vont droit leur chemin :
¹⁶ "Que celui qui est simple entre ici !" Elle dit à celui qui est dépourvu de sens :
¹⁷ "Les eaux dérobées sont plus douces, et le pain du mystère est plus agréable !"
¹⁸ Et il ne sait pas qu'il y a là des ombres, et que ses invités sont déjà dans les profondeurs du schéol.

Proverbes 10

¹ Paraboles de Salomon. Le fils sage fait la joie de son père, et le fils insensé le chagrin de sa mère.
² Les trésors acquis par le crime ne profitent pas, mais la justice délivre de la mort.
³ Yahweh ne laisse pas le juste souffrir de la faim, mais il repousse la convoitise du méchant.
⁴ Il s'appauvrit celui qui travaille d'une main paresseuse, mais la main des diligents amasse des richesses.
⁵ Celui qui recueille pendant l'été est un fils prudent ; celui qui dort au temps de la moisson est un fils de confusion.
⁶ La bénédiction vient sur la tête du juste, mais l'injustice couvre la bouche des méchants.
⁷ La mémoire du juste est en bénédiction, mais le nom des méchants tombe en pourriture.
⁸ Celui qui est sage de coeur reçoit les préceptes, mais celui qui est insensé des lèvres va à sa perte.
⁹ Celui qui marche dans l'intégrité marche en confiance, mais celui qui prend des voies tortueuses sera découvert.
¹⁰ Celui qui cligne les yeux sera une cause de chagrin, et celui qui est insensé des lèvres va à sa perte.
¹¹ La bouche du juste est une source de vie, mais l'injustice couvre la bouche du méchant.
¹² La haine suscite des querelles, mais l'amour couvre toutes les fautes.
¹³ Sur les lèvres de l'homme intelligent se trouve la sagesse, mais la verge est pour le dos de celui qui manque de sens.
¹⁴ Les sages tiennent la sagesse en réserve, mais la bouche de l'insensé est un malheur prochain.
¹⁵ La fortune est pour le riche sa place forte, le malheur des misérables, c'est leur pauvreté.
¹⁶ L'oeuvre du juste est pour la vie, le gain du méchant est pour le péché.
¹⁷ Celui qui prend garde à l'instruction prend le chemin de la vie ; mais celui qui oublie la réprimande s'égare.
¹⁸ Celui qui cache la haine a des lèvres menteuses, et celui qui répand la calomnie est un insensé.
¹⁹ L'abondance de paroles ne va pas sans péché, mais celui qui retient ses lèvres est un homme prudent.
²⁰ La langue du juste est un argent de choix ; le coeur des méchants est de peu de prix.
²¹ Les lèvres du juste nourrissent beaucoup d'hommes, mais les insensés meurent par défaut d'intelligence.
²² C'est la bénédiction du Seigneur qui procure la richesse, et la peine que l'on prend n'y ajoute rien.
²³ Commettre le crime paraît un jeu à l'insensé ; il en est de même de la sagesse pour l'homme intelligent.
²⁴ Ce que redoute le méchant lui arrive, et Dieu accorde au juste ce qu'il désire.
²⁵ Comme passe le tourbillon, le méchant disparaît ; le juste est établi sur un fondement éternel.
²⁶ Ce que le vinaigre est aux dents et la fumée aux yeux, tel est le paresseux pour ceux qui l'envoient.
²⁷ La crainte de Yahweh augmente les jours, mais les années des méchants sont abrégées.
²⁸ L'attente des justes n'est que joie, mais l'espérance des méchants périra.
²⁹ La voie de Yahweh est un rempart pour le juste, mais elle est une ruine pour ceux qui font le mal.
³⁰ Le juste ne chancellera jamais, mais les méchants n'habiteront pas la terre.
³¹ La bouche du juste produit la sagesse, et la langue perverse sera arrachée.
³² Les lèvres du juste connaissent la grâce, et la bouche des méchants la perversité.

Proverbes 11

¹ La balance fausse est en horreur à Yahweh, mais le poids juste lui est agréable.
² Si l'orgueil vient, viendra aussi l'ignominie ; mais la sagesse est avec les humbles.
³ L'innocence des hommes droits les dirige, mais les détours des perfides les ruinent.
⁴ Au jour de la colère, la richesse ne sert de rien, mais la justice délivre de la mort.
⁵ La justice de l'homme intègre dirige ses voies, mais le méchant tombe par sa méchanceté.
⁶ La justice des hommes droits les délivre, mais les perfides sont pris par leur propre malice.
⁷ Quand meurt le méchant, son espoir périt, et l'attente du pervers est anéantie.
⁸ Le juste est délivré de l'angoisse, et le méchant y tombe à sa place.
⁹ Par sa bouche l'impie prépare la ruine de son prochain, mais les justes seront délivrés par la science.
¹⁰ Quand les justes sont heureux, la ville se réjouit ; quand les méchants périssent, on pousse des cris de joie.
¹¹ Par la bénédiction des hommes droits la ville prospère ; elle est renversée par la bouche des impies.
¹² Celui qui méprise son prochain est dépourvu de sens, mais l'homme intelligent se tait.
¹³ Le médisant dévoile les secrets, mais l'homme au coeur fidèle tient la chose cachée.
¹⁴ Quand la direction fait défaut, le peuple tombe ; le salut est le grand nombre des conseillers.
¹⁵ Qui cautionne un inconnu s'en repent, mais celui qui craint de s'engager est en sécurité.
¹⁶ La femme qui a de la grâce obtient la gloire, les hommes énergiques acquièrent la richesse.
¹⁷ L'homme charitable fait du bien à son âme, mais l'homme cruel afflige sa propre chair.
¹⁸ Le méchant fait un travail trompeur, mais celui qui sème la justice a une récompense assurée.
¹⁹ La justice conduit à la vie, mais celui qui poursuit le mal va à la mort.
²⁰ Les hommes au coeur pervers sont en abomination à Yahweh, mais ceux qui sont intègres en leur voie sont l'objet de ses complaisances.
²¹ Non, le méchant ne restera pas impuni, mais la postérité des justes sera sauvée.
²² Un anneau d'or au nez d'un pourceau, telle est la femme belle et dépourvue de sens.
²³ Le désir des justes, c'est uniquement le bien : l'attente des méchants, c'est la fureur.
²⁴ Celui-ci donne libéralement et s'enrichit ; Cet autre épargne outre mesure et s'appauvrit.
²⁵ L'âme bienfaisante sera rassasiée, et celui qui arrose sera lui-même arrosé.
²⁶ Celui qui retient le blé est maudit du peuple, mais la bénédiction est sur la tête de celui qui le vend.
²⁷ Celui qui recherche le bien trouve la faveur, mais celui qui cherche le mal, le mal l'atteindra.
²⁸ Celui qui se confie dans sa richesse tombera, mais les justes germeront comme le feuillage.
²⁹ Celui qui trouble sa maison héritera le vent, et l'insensé sera l'esclave de l'homme sage.
³⁰ Le fruit du juste est un arbre de vie, et qui fait la conquête des âmes est sage.
³¹ Si le juste reçoit sur la terre une rétribution de peines, combien plus le méchant et le pécheur !

¹ Celui qui aime l'instruction aime la science ; celui qui hait la réprimande est insensé.

² Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.
³ Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.

⁵ That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.
⁶ For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,
⁷ And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,
⁸ Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,
⁹ In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:
¹⁰ And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.
¹¹ (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:
¹² Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)
¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,
¹⁴ I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.
¹⁵ Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.
¹⁶ I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.
¹⁷ I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
¹⁸ Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.
¹⁹ For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:
²⁰ He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.
²¹ With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.
²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;
²³ Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.
²⁴ Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.
²⁵ Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.
²⁶ For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.

Proverbes 8

¹ Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?
² She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.
³ She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
⁴ Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.
⁵ O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.
⁶ Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
⁷ For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
⁸ All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.
⁹ They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
¹⁰ Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
¹¹ For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
¹² I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
¹⁴ Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.
¹⁵ By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
¹⁶ By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
¹⁷ I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
¹⁸ Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.
¹⁹ My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
²⁰ I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:
²¹ That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
²² The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
²³ I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
²⁴ When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
²⁵ Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
²⁶ While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
²⁷ When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
²⁸ When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
²⁹ When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
³⁰ Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
³¹ Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
³² Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
³³ Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
³⁴ Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
³⁵ For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
³⁶ But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Proverbes 9

¹ Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
² She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.
³ She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
⁴ Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
⁵ Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
⁶ Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
⁷ He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
⁸ Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
¹¹ For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
¹² If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
¹³ A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.
¹⁴ For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
¹⁵ To call passengers who go right on their ways:
¹⁶ Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
¹⁷ Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
¹⁸ But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

Proverbes 10

¹ The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.
² Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.
³ The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.
⁴ He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
⁵ He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.
⁶ Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
⁷ The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.
⁸ The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.
⁹ He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.
¹⁰ He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.
¹¹ The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
¹² Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.
¹³ In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

¹⁸ He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.
¹⁹ In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
²⁰ The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.
²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.
²² The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.
²³ It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.
²⁴ The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.
²⁵ As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
²⁶ As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.
²⁷ The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
²⁸ The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.
²⁹ The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
³⁰ The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.
³¹ The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.
³² The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.

Proverbes 11

¹ A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.
² When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
³ The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.
⁴ Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.
⁵ The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.
⁶ The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.
⁷ When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.
⁸ The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.
⁹ An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.
¹⁰ When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.
¹¹ By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
¹² He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.
¹³ A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
¹⁴ Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
¹⁵ He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.
¹⁶ A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.
¹⁷ The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.
¹⁸ The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.
¹⁹ As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.
²⁰ They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the LORD: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.
²¹ Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.
²² As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.
²³ The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.
²⁴ There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.
²⁵ The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.
²⁶ He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.
²⁷ He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.
²⁸ He that trusteth in his riches shall fall; but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.
²⁹ He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.
³⁰ The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
³¹ Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.
