¹ Et les Philistins ayant pris l'arche de Dieu l'emmenèrent d'Ebénézer à Asdod.
² Et les Philistins prirent l'arche de Dieu et la firent entrer dans la maison de Dagon et la placèrent auprès de Dagon.
³ Et le lendemain les Asdodiens trouvèrent, le matin, Dagon tombé par terre sur sa face devant l'arche de l'Eternel ; et ils prirent Dagon et le remirent à sa place.
⁴ Et le lendemain matin de bonne heure, ils trouvèrent Dagon tombé par terre sur sa face devant l'arche de l'Eternel ; et la tête de Dagon et ses deux mains gisaient détachées sur le seuil ; il ne lui restait que son corps de poisson.
⁵ C'est pour cette raison que les sacrificateurs de Dagon et tous ceux qui entrent dans la maison de Dagon ne posent pas le pied sur le seuil de Dagon à Asdod jusqu'à ce jour.
⁶ Puis la main de l'Eternel s'appesantit sur les Asdodiens, et il les mit en désolation et les frappa de tumeurs, à Asdod et dans son territoire.
⁷ Et les gens d'Asdod, voyant qu'il en était ainsi, dirent : L'arche du Dieu d'Israël ne restera point chez,nous, car sa main s'est appesantie sur nous et sur Dagon notre dieu.
⁸ Et ils convoquèrent chez eux par des envoyés tous les princes des Philistins et dirent Que ferons-nous de l'arche du Dieu d'Israël ? Et ils répondirent : Qu'on transporte l'arche du Dieu d'Israël à Gath ! Ainsi on y transporta l'arche du Dieu d'Israël.
⁹ Et après qu'on l'eut transportée, la main de l'Eternel fut sur la ville et il y eut un fort grand effroi, et il frappa les gens de la ville depuis le plus petit jusqu'au plus grand, et il leur poussa des tumeurs.
¹⁰ Et ils envoyèrent l'arche de Dieu à Ekron. Et comme l'arche de Dieu entrait à Ekron, ceux d'Ekron s'écrièrent, disant : Ils ont transporté l'arche du Dieu d'Israël vers nous pour nous faire mourir, nous et notre peuple.
¹¹ Et ils convoquèrent par des envoyés tous les princes des Philistins et dirent : Laissez aller l'arche du Dieu d'Israël et qu'elle s'en retourne en son lieu, afin qu'elle ne nous fasse point mourir, nous et notre peuple ! Car il y avait une frayeur mortelle dans toute la ville, et la main de Dieu s'y appesantissait fortement.
¹² Les hommes qui ne mouraient point étaient frappés de tumeurs, et le cri de la ville monta jusqu'au ciel.

1 Samuel 6

¹ Et l'arche de l'Eternel ayant été pendant sept mois dans le pays des Philistins,
² les Philistins appelèrent les sacrificateurs et les devins et leur dirent : Que ferons-nous de l'arche de l'Eternel ? Faites-nous savoir comment nous la renverrons en son lieu.
³ Et ils dirent : Si vous renvoyez l'arche du Dieu d'Israël, ne la renvoyez point à vide, mais ne manquez pas de lui payer une offrande de réparation. Si vous êtes guéris, vous saurez pourquoi sa main ne s'est pas retirée de dessus vous.
⁴ Et ils dirent : Quelle offrande de réparation lui payerons-nous ? Et ils dirent : Selon le nombre des princes des Philistins vous donnerez cinq tumeurs d'or et cinq souris d'or, car une même plaie a été sur tous et sur vos princes.
⁵ Et vous ferez des figures de vos tumeurs et des figures de vos souris qui dévastent le pays, et vous donnerez gloire au Dieu d'Israël. Peut-être lèvera-t-il sa main de dessus vous et de dessus vos dieux et de dessus votre pays.
⁶ Et pourquoi appesantiriez-vous votre coeur, comme l'Egypte et Pharaon ont appesanti le leur ? Après qu'il eut exercé ses châtiments sur eux, ne les laissèrent-ils pas partir ?
⁷ Maintenant donc faites un chariot neuf et prenez deux vaches qui allaitent, sur lesquelles on n'ait point encore mis le joug, et attelez les vaches au chariot et ramenez leurs petits d'auprès d'elles à l'étable.
⁸ Et prenez l'arche de l'Eternel et mettez-la sur le chariot ; et les ouvrages d'or que vous lui aurez payés en réparation, mettez-les à côté d'elle dans un coffret, et renvoyez-la, et elle s'en ira.
⁹ Et vous verrez : si elle monte par le chemin de son pays vers Beth-Sémès, c'est lui qui nous a fait tout ce grand mal ; sinon, nous saurons que ce n'est pas sa main qui nous a frappés ; cela nous est arrivé par hasard.
¹⁰ Et ces gens firent ainsi. Ils prirent deux vaches qui allaitaient et les attelèrent au chariot et ils enfermèrent leurs petits dans l'étable.
¹¹ Et ils mirent l'arche de l'Eternel sur le chariot, ainsi que le coffret, avec les souris d'or et les figures de leurs tumeurs.
¹² Et les vaches prirent tout droit le chemin de Beth-Sémès, tenant toujours le même chemin en marchant et en mugissant ; et elles ne se détournèrent ni à droite ni à gauche ; et les princes des Philistins allèrent après elles jusqu'au territoire de Beth-Sémès.
¹³ Et les gens de Beth-Sémès moissonnaient les blés dans la vallée ; et ils levèrent les yeux et virent l'arche et ils se réjouirent en la voyant.
¹⁴ Et le chariot vint au champ de Josué, de Beth-Sémès, et s'arrêta là. Et il y avait là une grosse pierre ; et on fendit le bois du chariot et on offrit les vaches en holocauste à l'Eternel.
¹⁵ Et les lévites, après avoir descendu l'arche de l'Eternel et le coffret qui était auprès, dans lequel étaient les ouvrages d'or, les mirent sur la grosse pierre. Et les gens de Beth-Sémès offrirent des holocaustes et présentèrent des sacrifices à l'Eternel en ce jour-là.
¹⁶ Et les cinq princes des Philistins, ayant vu cela, retournèrent à Ekron, ce même jour.
¹⁷ Et voici quelles étaient les tumeurs d'or que les Philistins donnèrent à l'Eternel en offrande de réparation : une pour Asdod, une pour Gaza, une pour Askalon, une pour Gath, une pour Ekron.
¹⁸ Il y avait aussi des souris d'or, selon le nombre de toutes les villes des Philistins, appartenant aux cinq chefs, depuis les villes fermées de murailles jusqu'aux villes sans murs ; témoin en est jusqu'à ce jour la grosse pierre sur laquelle ils placèrent l'arche de l'Eternel, dans le champ de Josué, de Beth-Sémès.
¹⁹ Et l'Eternel frappa des gens de Beth-Sémès, parce qu'ils avaient regardé l'arche ; il frappa soixante-dix hommes, parmi le peuple. Et le peuple fit un grand deuil parce que l'Eternel l'avait frappé, d'une grande plaie.
²⁰ Alors ceux de Beth-Sémès dirent : Qui pourrait subsister en la présence de l'Eternel, ce Dieu saint ? Et chez qui montera-t-elle depuis chez nous ?
²¹ Et ils envoyèrent des messagers aux habitants de Kirjath-Jéarim, disant : Les Philistins ont ramené l'arche de l'Eternel ; descendez et faites-la monter chez vous.

¹ And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.
² When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
³ And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
⁴ And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
⁵ Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
⁶ But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
⁷ And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
⁸ They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
⁹ And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
¹⁰ Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.
¹¹ So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
¹² And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

¹ And the ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months.
² And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place.
³ And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.
⁴ Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.
⁵ Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.
⁶ Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?
⁷ Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:
⁸ And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.
⁹ And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.
¹⁰ And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:
¹¹ And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.
¹² And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh.
¹³ And they of Bethshemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.
¹⁴ And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Bethshemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the LORD.
¹⁵ And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Bethshemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD.
¹⁶ And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.
¹⁷ And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering unto the LORD; for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Askelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;
¹⁸ And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Bethshemite.
¹⁹ And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.
²⁰ And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?
²¹ And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjathjearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.
