   ²¹ Et Élie s'approcha de tout le peuple, et dit : Combien de temps hésiterez-vous entre les deux côtés ? Si l'Éternel est Dieu, suivez-le ; et si c'est Baal, suivez-le ! Et le peuple ne lui répondit mot. ²² Et Élie dit au peuple : Je reste, moi seul, prophète de l'Éternel, et les prophètes de Baal sont quatre cent cinquante hommes. ²³ Qu'on nous donne deux taureaux ; et qu'ils choisissent pour eux l'un des taureaux, et qu'ils le dépècent, et qu'ils le placent sur le bois, et qu'ils n'y mettent pas de feu ; et moi j'offrirai* l'autre taureau, et je le placerai sur le bois, et je n'y mettrai pas de feu. ²⁴ Et vous invoquerez le nom de votre dieu, et moi j'invoquerai le nom de l'Éternel, et le dieu qui répondra par le feu, lui, sera Dieu. Et tout le peuple répondit et dit : La parole est bonne. ²⁵ Et Élie dit aux prophètes de Baal : Choisissez pour vous l'un des taureaux, et offrez* les premiers, car vous êtes nombreux, et invoquez le nom de votre dieu, et ne mettez pas de feu. ²⁶ Et ils prirent le taureau qu'on leur avait donné, et l'offrirent*, et invoquèrent le nom de Baal depuis le matin jusqu'à midi, disant : Ô Baal, réponds-nous ! Mais il n'y eut pas de voix, ni personne qui répondît. Et ils sautaient autour* de l'autel qu'on avait fait. ²⁷ Et il arriva qu'à midi Élie se moqua d'eux, et dit : Criez à haute voix, car il est un dieu ; car il médite, ou il est allé à l'écart, ou il est en voyage ; peut-être qu'il dort, et il se réveillera ! ²⁸ Et ils crièrent à haute voix, et se firent des incisions, selon leur coutume, avec des épées et des piques, jusqu'à faire couler le sang sur eux. ²⁹ Et il arriva, quand midi fut passé, qu'ils prophétisèrent jusqu'à [l'heure] où l'on offre* le gâteau ; et il n'y eut pas de voix, et personne qui répondit, et personne qui fît attention. ³⁰ Alors Élie dit à tout le peuple : Approchez-vous de moi. Et tout le peuple s'approcha de lui. Et il répara l'autel de l'Éternel, qui avait été renversé. ³¹ Et Élie prit douze pierres, selon le nombre des tribus des fils de Jacob, auquel vint la parole de l'Éternel, disant : Israël sera ton nom ; ³² et il bâtit avec les pierres un autel au nom de l'Éternel, et fit autour de l'autel un fossé de la capacité de deux mesures* de semence ; ³³ et il arrangea le bois, et dépeça le taureau, et le plaça sur le bois. ³⁴ Et il dit : Remplissez d'eau quatre cruches, et versez-les sur l'holocauste et sur le bois. Et il dit : Faites-le une seconde fois ; et ils le firent une seconde fois. Et il dit : Faites-le une troisième fois ; et ils le firent une troisième fois. ³⁵ Et l'eau coula autour de l'autel ; et il remplit d'eau aussi le fossé. ³⁶ Et il arriva, à [l'heure] où l'on offre* le gâteau, qu'Élie, le prophète, s'approcha, et dit : Éternel, Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac, et d'Israël, qu'il soit connu aujourd'hui que toi tu es Dieu en Israël, et que moi je suis ton serviteur, et que c'est par ta parole que j'ai fait toutes ces choses. ³⁷ Réponds-moi, Éternel, réponds-moi, et que ce peuple sache que toi, Éternel, tu es Dieu, et que tu as ramené leur cœur. ³⁸ Et le feu de l'Éternel tomba, et consuma l'holocauste, et le bois, et les pierres, et la poussière, et lécha l'eau qui était dans le fossé. ³⁹ Et tout le peuple le vit ; et ils tombèrent sur leurs faces, et dirent : L'Éternel, c'est lui qui est Dieu ! L'Éternel, c'est lui qui est Dieu ! ⁴⁰ Et Élie leur dit : Saisissez les prophètes de Baal, que pas un d'entre eux n'échappe ! Et ils les saisirent ; et Élie les fit descendre au torrent de Kison, et les égorgea là.

   ²¹ And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. ²² Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men. ²³ Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: ²⁴ And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken. ²⁵ And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under. ²⁶ And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made. ²⁷ And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. ²⁸ And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. ²⁹ And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded. ³⁰ And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down. ³¹ And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name: ³² And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. ³³ And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood. ³⁴ And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time. ³⁵ And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water. ³⁶ And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. ³⁷ Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. ³⁸ Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. ³⁹ And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God. ⁴⁰ And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

   ²² Et ait rursus Elias ad populum : Ego remansi propheta Domini solus : prophetæ autem Baal quadringenti et quinquaginta viri sunt.
   ²³ Dentur nobis duo boves, et illi eligant sibi bovem unum, et in frusta cædentes ponant super ligna, ignem autem non supponant : et ego faciam bovem alterum, et imponam super ligna, ignem autem non supponam.
   ²⁴ Invocate nomina deorum vestrorum, et ego invocabo nomen Domini mei : et Deus qui exaudierit per ignem, ipse sit Deus. Respondens omnis populus ait : Optima propositio.
   ²⁵ Dixit ergo Elias prophetis Baal : Eligite vobis bovem unum, et facite primi, quia vos plures estis : et invocate nomina deorum vestrorum, ignemque non supponatis.
   ²⁶ Qui cum tulissent bovem quem dederat eis, fecerunt : et invocabant nomen Baal de mane usque ad meridiem, dicentes : Baal, exaudi nos. Et non erat vox, nec qui responderet : transiliebantque altare quod fecerant.
   ²⁷ Cumque esset jam meridies, illudebat illis Elias, dicens : Clamate voce majore : deus enim est, et forsitan loquitur, aut in diversorio est, aut in itinere, aut certe dormit, ut excitetur.
   ²⁸ Clamabant ergo voce magna, et incidebant se juxta ritum suum cultris et lanceolis, donec perfunderentur sanguine.
   ²⁹ Postquam autem transiit meridies, et illis prophetantibus venerat tempus quo sacrificium offerri solet, nec audiebatur vox, nec aliquis respondebat, nec attendebat orantes,
   ³⁰ dixit Elias omni populo : Venite ad me.
Et accedente ad se populo, curavit altare Domini quod destructum fuerat.
   ³¹ Et tulit duodecim lapides juxta numerum tribuum filiorum Jacob, ad quem factus est sermo Domini, dicens : Israël erit nomen tuum.
   ³² Et ædificavit de lapidibus altare in nomine Domini : fecitque aquæductum, quasi per duas aratiunculas in circuitu altaris,
   ³³ et composuit ligna : divisitque per membra bovem, et posuit super ligna,
   ³⁴ et ait : Implete quatuor hydrias aqua, et fundite super holocaustum et super ligna. Rursumque dixit : Etiam secundo hoc facite. Qui cum fecissent secundo, ait : Etiam tertio idipsum facite. Feceruntque tertio,
   ³⁵ et currebant aquæ circum altare, et fossa aquæductus repleta est.
   ³⁶ Cumque jam tempus esset ut offerretur holocaustum, accedens Elias propheta ait : Domine Deus Abraham, et Isaac, et Israël, ostende hodie quia tu es Deus Israël, et ego servus tuus, et juxta præceptum tuum feci omnia verba hæc.
   ³⁷ Exaudi me, Domine, exaudi me : ut discat populus iste quia tu es Dominus Deus, et tu convertisti cor eorum iterum.
   ³⁸ Cecidit autem ignis Domini, et voravit holocaustum, et ligna, et lapides, pulverem quoque, et aquam quæ erat in aquæductu lambens.
   ³⁹ Quod cum vidisset omnis populus, cecidit in faciem suam, et ait : Dominus ipse est Deus, Dominus ipse est Deus.
   ⁴⁰ Dixitque Elias ad eos : Apprehendite prophetas Baal, et ne unus quidem effugiat ex eis. Quos cum apprehendissent, duxit eos Elias ad torrentem Cison, et interfecit eos ibi.
