   ² Et il y avait à Maon un homme qui avait son bien au Carmel ; et cet homme était fort riche ; il avait trois mille brebis et mille chèvres, et il se trouvait au Carmel pour la tonte de ses brebis. ³ Le nom de cet homme était Nabal, et celui de sa femme Abigaïl ; c'était une femme intelligente et belle, et l'homme était dur et méchant ; et il faisait à sa tête. ⁴ Et David apprit au désert que Nabal tondait ses brebis. ⁵ Et David envoya dix jeunes gens, et David dit à ces jeunes gens : Montez au Carmel, et allez chez Nabal et saluez-le de ma part. ⁶ Et vous lui parlerez ainsi : Bonne vie ! Tu vas bien, ta maison va bien, toutes tes affaires vont bien. ⁷ Et maintenant j'ai entendu que tu as les tondeurs. Or tes bergers ont été avec nous, nous ne les avons point molestés et rien du troupeau ne leur a manqué pendant tout le temps qu'ils ont été au Carmel. ⁸ Demande à tes serviteurs et ils te le diront. Que ces jeunes gens trouvent donc grâce à tes yeux, car nous sommes venus en un jour de fête. Donne, je te prie, ce qui se trouvera sous ta main à tes serviteurs et à ton fils David. ⁹ Et les jeunes gens de David vinrent et dirent à Nabal toutes ces paroles au nom de David et ils attendirent. ¹⁰ Et Nabal répondit aux serviteurs de David et dit : Qui est David, et qui est le fils d'Isaï ? De nos jours ils sont nombreux les serviteurs qui décampent de chez leurs maîtres. ¹¹ Et je prendrais mon pain et mon eau et ma viande que j'ai préparés pour mes tondeurs, et je les donnerais à des gens qui viennent je ne sais d'où !

   ² And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel. ³ Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb. ⁴ And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal did shear his sheep. ⁵ And David sent out ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name: ⁶ And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast. ⁷ And now I have heard that thou hast shearers: now thy shepherds which were with us, we hurt them not, neither was there ought missing unto them, all the while they were in Carmel. ⁸ Ask thy young men, and they will shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy son David. ⁹ And when David's young men came, they spake to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased. ¹⁰ And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master. ¹¹ Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not whence they be?
