   ¹ And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod. ² When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon. ³ And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again. ⁴ And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him. ⁵ Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
   ⁶ But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof. ⁷ And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god. ⁸ They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither. ⁹ And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts. ¹⁰ Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people. ¹¹ So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there. ¹² And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

   ¹ And the ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months. ² And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place. ³ And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you. ⁴ Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords. ⁵ Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land. ⁶ Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed? ⁷ Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them: ⁸ And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go. ⁹ And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.
   ¹⁰ And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home: ¹¹ And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods. ¹² And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh. ¹³ And they of Bethshemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it. ¹⁴ And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Bethshemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the LORD. ¹⁵ And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Bethshemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD. ¹⁶ And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day. ¹⁷ And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering unto the LORD; for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Askelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one; ¹⁸ And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Bethshemite.
   ¹⁹ And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter. ²⁰ And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us? ²¹ And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjathjearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.

L'arche de l'alliance chez les Philistins

¹ Les Philistins prirent l'arche de Dieu et la transportèrent d'Eben-Ezer à Asdod. ² Après s'être emparés de l'arche de Dieu, les Philistins la firent entrer dans le temple de Dagon et la placèrent à côté de Dagon. ³ Le lendemain, les Asdodiens se levèrent de bon matin et trouvèrent Dagon étendu le visage contre terre devant l'arche de l'Eternel. Ils prirent Dagon et le remirent à sa place. ⁴ Le surlendemain, ils se levèrent de bon matin et trouvèrent de nouveau Dagon étendu le visage contre terre devant l'arche de l'Eternel. La tête de Dagon et ses deux mains étaient abattues sur le seuil, et il ne lui restait que le tronc. ⁵ C'est pourquoi, jusqu'à aujourd'hui, les prêtres de Dagon et tous ceux qui viennent dans le temple de Dagon à Asdod ne marchent pas sur le seuil.
⁶ La main de l'Eternel pesa plus lourdement encore sur les Asdodiens et il fit des ravages parmi eux. Il les frappa de tumeurs à Asdod et dans le territoire qui en dépend. ⁷ Quand ils virent cela, les habitants d'Asdod dirent: «L'arche du Dieu d'Israël ne restera pas chez nous, car il fait peser lourdement sa main sur nous et sur Dagon, notre dieu.» ⁸ Ils firent venir tous les princes des Philistins, les rassemblèrent chez eux et demandèrent: «Que pouvons-nous faire de l'arche du Dieu d'Israël?» Les princes répondirent: «Qu'on la transporte à Gath.» Et l'on transporta là-bas l'arche du Dieu d'Israël. ⁹ Mais une fois qu'on l'y eut transportée, la main de l'Eternel fut contre la ville et il y eut une très grande terreur. Il frappa les habitants de la ville, depuis le petit jusqu'au grand, et ils eurent une éruption de tumeurs. ¹⁰ Alors ils envoyèrent l'arche de Dieu à Ekron. Lorsque l'arche de Dieu entra dans Ekron, les Ekroniens poussèrent des cris en disant: «On a transporté l'arche du Dieu d'Israël chez nous pour nous faire mourir, nous et notre peuple!» ¹¹ Ils firent venir tous les princes des Philistins, les rassemblèrent et dirent: «Renvoyez l'arche du Dieu d'Israël! Qu'elle retourne chez elle et qu'elle ne nous fasse pas mourir, nous et notre peuple.» En effet, dans toute la ville régnait une terreur mortelle; la main de Dieu y pesait très lourdement. ¹² Ceux qui ne mouraient pas étaient frappés de tumeurs et les cris de la ville montaient jusqu'au ciel.

Retour de l'arche de l'alliance en Israël

¹ L'arche de l'Eternel resta sept mois dans le pays des Philistins. ² Les Philistins appelèrent les prêtres et les devins et dirent: «Que pouvons-nous faire de l'arche de l'Eternel? Faites-nous connaître de quelle manière nous devons la renvoyer chez elle.» ³ Les hommes consultés répondirent: «Si vous renvoyez l'arche du Dieu d'Israël, ne la renvoyez pas sans rien, mais faites à Dieu un sacrifice de culpabilité. Alors vous guérirez et vous saurez pourquoi sa main ne s'est pas retirée de vous.» ⁴ Les Philistins dirent: «Quelle offrande lui ferons-nous?» Ils répondirent: «Nous offrirons 5 tumeurs en or et 5 souris en or, d'après le nombre des princes des Philistins, car le même fléau vous a tous atteints, vous et vos princes. ⁵ Faites des représentations de vos tumeurs, ainsi que des souris qui ravagent le pays, et rendez gloire au Dieu d'Israël. Peut-être cessera-t-il de faire lourdement peser sa main contre vous, contre vos dieux et contre votre pays. ⁶ Pourquoi rendriez-vous votre cœur insensible comme les Egyptiens et le pharaon l'ont fait? Dieu est intervenu contre eux et ils ont alors dû laisser partir les Israélites. ⁷ Maintenant, fabriquez un char tout neuf et prenez deux vaches qui allaitent et n'ont jamais porté de joug. Attelez ces vaches au char et ramenez leurs petits à l'étable afin qu'ils ne soient plus derrière elles. ⁸ Vous prendrez l'arche de l'Eternel et vous la mettrez sur le char. Vous placerez à côté d'elle, dans un coffre, les objets d'or que vous donnez à l'Eternel en sacrifice de culpabilité, puis vous la renverrez et elle partira. ⁹ Suivez-la du regard: si elle monte par le chemin de sa frontière vers Beth-Shémesh, cela signifie que c'est l'Eternel qui nous a fait ce grand mal; sinon, nous saurons que ce n'est pas sa main qui nous a frappés, mais que cela nous est arrivé par hasard.»
¹⁰ C'est ce que firent ces hommes. Ils prirent deux vaches qui allaitaient et les attelèrent au char, et ils enfermèrent les petits dans l'étable. ¹¹ Ils mirent sur le char l'arche de l'Eternel ainsi que le coffre avec les souris en or et les représentations de leurs tumeurs. ¹² Les vaches prirent directement le chemin de Beth-Shémesh; elles suivirent toujours la même route en mugissant, sans s'écarter à droite ou à gauche. Les princes des Philistins les suivirent jusqu'à la frontière de Beth-Shémesh.
¹³ Les habitants de Beth-Shémesh moissonnaient les blés dans la vallée; ils levèrent les yeux, aperçurent l'arche et se réjouirent en la voyant. ¹⁴ Le char arriva dans le champ de Josué, un habitant de Beth-Shémesh, et s'y arrêta. Il y avait là une grande pierre. On fendit le bois du char et l'on offrit les vaches en holocauste à l'Eternel. ¹⁵ Les Lévites descendirent l'arche de l'Eternel ainsi que le coffre qui se trouvait à côté d'elle et qui contenait les objets en or, et ils posèrent le tout sur la grande pierre. Les habitants de Beth-Shémesh offrirent ce jour-là des holocaustes et des sacrifices à l'Eternel. ¹⁶ Après avoir vu cela, les cinq princes des Philistins retournèrent à Ekron le jour même.
¹⁷ Voici les tumeurs en or que les Philistins donnèrent à l'Eternel en sacrifice de culpabilité: une pour Asdod, une pour Gaza, une pour Askalon, une pour Gath, une pour Ekron. ¹⁸ Il y avait aussi le nombre de souris en or correspondant au nombre de villes philistines qui appartenaient aux cinq chefs, aussi bien des villes fortifiées que des villages sans murailles. C'est ce qu'atteste la grande pierre sur laquelle on déposa l'arche de l'Eternel et qui se trouve aujourd'hui encore dans le champ de Josué de Beth-Shémesh.
¹⁹ L'Eternel frappa les habitants de Beth-Shémesh, lorsqu'ils regardèrent l'arche de l'Eternel. Il frappa 50'070 hommes parmi le peuple, et le peuple fut dans le deuil parce que l'Eternel l'avait frappé d'un grand fléau. ²⁰ Les habitants de Beth-Shémesh dirent: «Qui peut se tenir en présence de l'Eternel, de ce Dieu saint? Et vers qui l'arche doit-elle monter en s'éloignant de nous?» ²¹ Ils envoyèrent des messagers aux habitants de Kirjath-Jearim pour leur dire: «Les Philistins ont ramené l'arche de l'Eternel. Descendez donc et faites-la monter vers vous.»
