2S 10:2-6 (King James)

² Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon. ³ And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it? ⁴ Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away. ⁵ When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
   ⁶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men.

² David se dit: «Je vais montrer de la bonté envers Hanun, le fils de Nachash, tout comme son père en a montré envers moi.» Et il envoya ses serviteurs le consoler au sujet de son père. Lorsque les serviteurs de David arrivèrent dans le pays des Ammonites, ³ les chefs des Ammonites dirent à leur maître Hanun: «Penses-tu que ce soit pour honorer ton père que David t'envoie des consolateurs? N'est-ce pas pour faire une reconnaissance de la ville, pour l'explorer et la détruire, qu'il envoie ses serviteurs vers toi?» ⁴ Alors Hanun arrêta les serviteurs de David, leur fit raser la moitié de la barbe et fit couper leurs habits par le milieu jusqu'en haut des cuisses. Puis il les renvoya. ⁵ On en informa David et il envoya des messagers à leur rencontre, car ces hommes étaient couverts de honte. Le roi leur fit dire: «Restez à Jéricho jusqu'à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé et ne revenez qu'ensuite.»
⁶ Voyant qu'ils avaient provoqué le dégoût de David, les Ammonites firent engager 20'000 fantassins chez les Syriens de Beth-Rehob et chez ceux de Tsoba, 1000 hommes chez le roi de Maaca et 12'000 chez les habitants de Tob.
