2S 3:1-5:10 (King James)

   ¹ Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker. ² And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; ³ And his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; ⁴ And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; ⁵ And the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David's wife. These were born to David in Hebron. ⁶ And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.
   ⁷ And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and Ishbosheth said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father's concubine? ⁸ Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ishbosheth, and said, Am I a dog's head, which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman? ⁹ So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the LORD hath sworn to David, even so I do to him; ¹⁰ To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba. ¹¹ And he could not answer Abner a word again, because he feared him. ¹² And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee. ¹³ And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul's daughter, when thou comest to see my face. ¹⁴ And David sent messengers to Ishbosheth Saul's son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines. ¹⁵ And Ishbosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish. ¹⁶ And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned. ¹⁷ And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you: ¹⁸ Now then do it: for the LORD hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies. ¹⁹ And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin. ²⁰ So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast. ²¹ And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.
   ²² And, behold, the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace. ²³ When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace. ²⁴ Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone? ²⁵ Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest. ²⁶ And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not. ²⁷ And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother. ²⁸ And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner: ²⁹ Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father's house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread. ³⁰ So Joab, and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle. ³¹ And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David himself followed the bier. ³² And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept. ³³ And the king lamented over Abner, and said, Died Abner as a fool dieth? ³⁴ Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. And all the people wept again over him. ³⁵ And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down. ³⁶ And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them: as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people. ³⁷ For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner. ³⁸ And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel? ³⁹ And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.

2 Samuel 4

   ¹ And when Saul's son heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands were feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled. ² And Saul's son had two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon a Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin: (for Beeroth also was reckoned to Benjamin. ³ And the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and were sojourners there until this day.) ⁴ And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth. ⁵ And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ishbosheth, who lay on a bed at noon. ⁶ And they came thither into the midst of the house, as though they would have fetched wheat; and they smote him under the fifth rib: and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped. ⁷ For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and gat them away through the plain all night. ⁸ And they brought the head of Ishbosheth unto David to Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of Ishbosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.
   ⁹ And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity, ¹⁰ When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his tidings: ¹¹ How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth? ¹² And David commanded his young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up over the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbosheth, and buried it in the sepulchre of Abner in Hebron.

2 Samuel 5

   ¹ Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. ² Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel. ³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel. ⁴ David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. ⁵ In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.
   ⁶ And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither. ⁷ Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David. ⁸ And David said on that day, Whosoever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind that are hated of David's soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house. ⁹ So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward. ¹⁰ And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him.

Ceux-ci naquirent à David à Hébron. ⁶ Il arriva donc que pendant qu'il y eut guerre entre la maison de Saül et la maison de David, Abner soutenait la maison de Saül.
   ⁷ Or Saül avait eu une concubine nommée Ritspa, fille d'Aja ; et [Is-boseth] dit à Abner : Pourquoi es-tu venu vers la concubine de mon père ? ⁸ Et Abner fut fort irrité à cause du discours d'Is-boseth, et il lui dit : Suis-je une tête de chien, moi qui ai fait paraître en ce temps-ci contre Juda mon attachement pour la maison de Saül ton père et pour ses frères, et ses amis, en ne te faisant point tomber entre les mains de David, que tu me recherches aujourd'hui pour l'iniquité d'une femme ? ⁹ Que Dieu fasse ainsi à Abner, et ainsi il y ajoute, si je ne fais à David selon ce que l'Eternel lui a juré ; ¹⁰ En lui transportant le Royaume de la maison de Saül, et en établissant le trône de David sur Israël et sur Juda, depuis Dan jusqu'à Beersébah ! ¹¹ Et [Is-boseth] n'osa répondre un seul mot à Abner, à cause qu'il le craignait. ¹² Abner donc envoya des messagers à David de sa part, pour lui dire : A qui est le pays ? [et pour lui] dire : Fais accord avec moi, et voici ma main sera avec toi, pour réduire sous ton pouvoir tout Israël. ¹³ Et David répondit : [Je le veux] bien ; je ferai accord avec toi ; je te demande seulement une chose, c'est que tu ne verras point ma face, si premièrement tu ne me ramènes Mical fille de Saül, quand tu viendras me voir. ¹⁴ Alors David envoya des messagers à Is-boseth fils de Saül, pour lui dire : Rends moi ma femme Mical, que j'ai épousée pour cent prépuces des Philistins. ¹⁵ Et Is-boseth envoya, et l'ôta à son mari Paltiel fils de Laïs. ¹⁶ Et son mari s'en alla avec elle pleurant continuellement après elle, jusqu'à Bahurim ; et Abner lui dit : Va, et t'en retourne ; et il s'en retourna. ¹⁷ Or Abner parla aux Anciens d'Israël, et leur dit : Vous cherchiez autrefois David pour [l'établir] Roi sur vous. ¹⁸ Maintenant donc faites-le ; car l'Eternel a parlé de David, et a dit : Par le moyen de David mon serviteur je délivrerai mon peuple d'Israël de la main des Philistins, et de la main de tous leurs ennemis. ¹⁹ Et Abner parla de même à ceux de Benjamin, eux l'entendant ; puis il s'en alla pour faire entendre expressément à David, [qui était] à Hébron, ce qui semblait bon à Israël, et à toute la maison de Benjamin. ²⁰ Et Abner vint vers David à Hébron, et vingt hommes avec lui ; et David fit un festin à Abner, et aux hommes qui étaient avec lui. ²¹ Puis Abner dit à David : Je me lèverai, et je m'en irai assembler tout Israël, [afin qu'ils se rendent] au Roi mon Seigneur, et qu'ils traitent alliance avec toi ; et tu régneras comme ton âme le souhaite. Et David renvoya Abner, qui s'en alla en paix.
   ²² Or voici, les gens de David revenaient avec Joab, de faire quelque course, et ils amenaient avec eux un grand butin ; mais Abner n'était plus avec David à Hébron ; car il l'avait renvoyé, et il s'en était allé en paix. ²³ Joab donc, et toute l'armée qui était avec lui, revint ; et on fit ce rapport à Joab, en disant : Abner fils de Ner est venu vers le Roi, qui l'a renvoyé, et il s'en est allé en paix. ²⁴ Et Joab vint au Roi, et dit : Qu'as-tu fait ? Voici, Abner est venu vers toi ; pourquoi l'as-tu ainsi renvoyé, tellement qu'il s'en soit allé son chemin ? ²⁵ Tu sais bien qu'Abner fils de Ner est venu pour te tromper, pour reconnaître ta sortie et ton entrée, et savoir tout ce que tu fais. ²⁶ Et Joab sortit d'auprès de David, et envoya après Abner des gens qui le ramenèrent de la fosse de Sira, sans que David en sût rien. ²⁷ Abner donc étant retourné à Hébron, Joab le tira à part au dedans de la porte pour lui parler en secret ; et il le frappa là à la cinquième côte, et ainsi [Abner] mourut à cause du sang de Hasaël frère de Joab. ²⁸ Et David ayant appris ce qui était arrivé, dit : Je suis innocent, moi et mon Royaume, devant l'Eternel à jamais, du sang d'Abner fils de Ner. ²⁹ Que ce sang s'arrête sur la tête de Joab, et sur toute la maison de son père ; et que la maison de Joab ne soit jamais sans quelque homme ayant un flux, ou ayant la lèpre, ou s'appuyant sur un bâton, ou tombant par l'épée, ou ayant disette de pain. ³⁰ Ainsi Joab et Abisaï son frère tuèrent Abner, parce qu'il avait tué Hasaël leur frère près de Gabaon en la bataille. ³¹ Et David dit à Joab, et à tout le peuple qui était avec lui : Déchirez vos vêtements, et couvrez-vous de sacs, et menez deuil [en marchant] devant Abner. Et le Roi David marchait après le cercueil. ³² Et quand ils eurent enseveli Abner à Hébron, le Roi éleva sa voix, et pleura près du sépulcre d'Abner ; tout le peuple aussi pleura. ³³ Et le Roi fit une complainte sur Abner, et dit : Abner est-il mort comme meurt un lâche ? ³⁴ Tes mains n'étaient point liées, et tes pieds n'avaient point été mis dans des ceps d'airain, mais tu es tombé comme on tombe devant les méchants ; et tout le peuple recommença à pleurer sur lui. ³⁵ Puis tout le peuple vint pour faire prendre quelque nourriture à David, pendant qu'il était encore jour ; mais David jura, et dit : Que Dieu me fasse ainsi, et ainsi il y ajoute, si avant le soleil couché je goûte du pain, ni aucune autre chose. ³⁶ Et tout le peuple l'entendit, et le trouva bon ; et tout le peuple approuva tout ce que le Roi fit. ³⁷ En ce jour-là donc tout le peuple et tout Israël connut que ce qu'on avait fait mourir Abner fils de Ner, n'était point venu du Roi. ³⁸ Et le Roi dit à ses serviteurs : Ne savez-vous pas qu'un capitaine, et même un grand capitaine, a été aujourd'hui mis à mort en Israël ? ³⁹ Or je suis [encore] faible aujourd'hui, bien que j'aie été oint Roi, et ces gens, les fils de Tséruja, sont trop forts pour moi. L'Eternel veuille rendre à celui qui fait le mal selon sa malice.

2 Samuel 4

Is-boseth assassiné.

   ¹ Quand le fils de Saül eut appris qu'Abner était mort à Hébron, ses mains devinrent lâches, et tout Israël fut étonné. ² Or le fils de Saül avait deux capitaines de bandes, dont l'un avait nom Bahana, et l'autre Récab, fils de Rimmon Béerothien, des enfants de Benjamin ; car [la ville de] Béeroth était aussi réputée de Benjamin. ³ Et les Béerothiens s'étaient enfuis à Guittajim, et ils y ont fait leur séjour jusqu'à aujourd'hui. ⁴ Et Jonathan, fils de Saül avait un fils blessé aux pieds, âgé de cinq ans, lorsque le bruit [de la mort de] Saül et de Jonathan vint de Jizréhel ; et sa gouvernante le prit, et s'enfuit ; et comme elle se hâtait de fuir, il tomba, et devint boiteux ; et il fut nommé Méphiboseth. ⁵ Récab donc et Bahana fils de Rimmon Béerothien vinrent, et entrèrent pendant la chaleur du jour dans la maison d'Is-boseth, qui prenait son repos du midi. ⁶ Ainsi Récab et Bahana son frère entrèrent jusqu'au milieu de la maison, allant prendre du froment, et ils le frappèrent à la cinquième côte, et se sauvèrent. ⁷ Ils entrèrent donc dans la maison, lorsque Is-boseth était couché sur son lit, dans la chambre où il dormait, et ils le frappèrent, et le tuèrent ; puis ils lui ôtèrent la tête, et la prirent, et ils marchèrent par le chemin de la campagne toute cette nuit-là. ⁸ Et ils apportèrent la tête d'Is-boseth à David à Hébron, et ils dirent au Roi : Voici la tête d'Is-boseth fils de Saül ton ennemi, qui cherchait ta vie ; et l'Eternel a aujourd'hui vengé le Roi mon Seigneur, de Saül et de sa race.
   ⁹ Mais David répondit à Récab et à Bahana son frère, enfants de Rimmon Béerothien, et leur dit : L'Eternel qui a délivré mon âme de toute angoisse, est vivant ; ¹⁰ Que je saisis celui qui vint m'annoncer et me dire : Voilà, Saül est mort, et qui pensait m'apprendre de bonnes nouvelles et je le tuai à Tsiklag, ce qui fut le salaire que je lui devais donner pour ses bonnes nouvelles. ¹¹ Combien plus [dois-je faire punir] ces méchants qui ont tué un homme de bien dans sa maison, sur son lit ? Maintenant donc ne redemanderai-je pas son sang de votre main, et ne vous exterminerai-je pas de la terre ? ¹² David donc fit commandement à ses gens, lesquels les tuèrent et leur coupèrent les mains et les pieds, et les pendirent sur l'étang d'Hébron. Puis on prit la tête d'Is-boseth, et on l'ensevelit au sépulcre d'Abner à Hébron.

2 Samuel 5

David est sacré Roi sur toutes les douze Tribus.

   ¹ Alors toutes les Tribus d'Israël vinrent vers David à Hébron, et lui parlèrent, en disant : Voici, nous sommes tes os et ta chair. ² Et même auparavant, quand Saül était Roi sur nous, tu étais celui qui menais et qui ramenais Israël ; et de plus l'Eternel t'a dit : Tu paîtras mon peuple d'Israël, et tu seras Conducteur d'Israël. ³ Tous les Anciens donc d'Israël vinrent vers le Roi à Hébron ; et le Roi David traita alliance avec eux à Hébron devant l'Eternel ; et ils oignirent David pour Roi sur Israël. ⁴ David était âgé de trente ans quand il commença à régner, [et] il régna quarante ans. ⁵ Il régna à Hébron sur Juda sept ans et six mois ; puis il régna trente-trois ans à Jérusalem sur tout Israël et Juda.
   ⁶ Or le Roi s'en alla avec ses gens à Jérusalem contre les Jébusiens qui habitaient en ce pays-là, lesquels dirent à David : Tu n'entreras point ici que tu n'aies ôté les aveugles et les boiteux ; voulant dire, David n'entrera point ici. ⁷ Néanmoins David prit la forteresse de Sion, qui est la Cité de David. ⁸ Or David avait dit en ce jour-là : Quiconque aura battu les Jébusiens, et aura atteint le canal, et les aveugles et les boiteux qui sont haïs de l'âme de David, [sera récompensé]. C'est pourquoi on dit : Aucun aveugle ni boiteux n'entrera dans cette maison. ⁹ Et David habita dans la forteresse, et l'appela la Cité de David ; et David y bâtit tout alentour, depuis Millo jusqu'au dedans. ¹⁰ Et David faisait toujours des progrès ; car l'Eternel le Dieu des armées était avec lui.
