Dn 2:1-13 (King James)

   ¹ And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him. ² Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king. ³ And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream. ⁴ Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation. ⁵ The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill. ⁶ But if ye shew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour: therefore shew me the dream, and the interpretation thereof. ⁷ They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it. ⁸ The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me. ⁹ But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof. ¹⁰ The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean. ¹¹ And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh. ¹² For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. ¹³ And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain.

   ¹ Or en la seconde année du règne de Nébucadnetsar, Nébucadnetsar songea des songes, et son esprit fut ému, et son sommeil finit. ² Alors le Roi commanda qu'on appelât les magiciens, et les astrologues, et les enchanteurs, et les Caldéens, pour expliquer au Roi ses songes ; ils vinrent donc et se présentèrent devant le Roi. ³ Et le Roi leur dit : J'ai songé un songe, et mon esprit s'est agité, tâchant de savoir le songe. ⁴ Et les Caldéens répondirent au Roi en langue Syriaque : Roi, vis éternellement ! dis le songe à tes serviteurs, et nous en donnerons l'interprétation. ⁵ [Mais] le Roi répondit, et dit aux Caldéens : La chose m'est échappée ; si vous ne me faites connaître le songe et son interprétation, vous serez mis en pièces, et vos maisons seront réduites en voirie. ⁶ Mais si vous me manifestez le songe et son interprétation ; vous recevrez de moi des dons, des largesses, et un grand honneur ; quoi qu'il en soit, manifestez-moi le songe et son interprétation. ⁷ Ils répondirent pour la seconde fois, et dirent : Que le Roi dise le songe à ses serviteurs, et nous en donnerons l'interprétation. ⁸ Le Roi répondit, et dit : Je connais maintenant que vous ne cherchez qu'à gagner du temps, parce que vous voyez que la chose m'est échappée. ⁹ Mais si vous ne me faites pas connaître le songe, il y a une même sentence contre vous ; car vous vous êtes préparés pour dire devant moi quelque parole fausse et perverse, en attendant que le temps soit changé. Quoi qu'il en soit, dites-moi le songe, et je saurai que vous m'en pouvez donner l'interprétation. ¹⁰ Les Caldéens répondirent au Roi, et dirent : Il n'y a aucun homme sur la terre qui puisse exécuter ce que le Roi demande ; et aussi il n'y a ni Roi, ni Seigneur, ni Gouverneur qui ait jamais demandé une telle chose à quelque magicien, astrologue, ou Caldéen que ce soit. ¹¹ Car la chose que le Roi demande est extrêmement difficile et il n'y a que les dieux, lesquels n'ont aucune fréquentation avec la chair, qui la puissent déclarer au Roi. ¹² C'est pourquoi le Roi commanda avec grande colère et indignation qu'on mît à mort tous les sages de Babylone. ¹³ La sentence donc fut publiée, et on tuait les sages ; et on cherchait Daniel et ses compagnons, pour les tuer.

¹ In anno secundo regni Nabuchodonosor, vidit Nabuchodonosor somnium, et conterritus est spiritus ejus, et somnium ejus fugit ab eo. ² Præcepit autem rex ut convocarentur arioli, et magi, et malefici, et Chaldæi, ut indicarent regi somnia sua. Qui cum venissent, steterunt coram rege. ³ Et dixit ad eos rex : Vidi somnium, et mente confusus ignoro quid viderim. ⁴ Responderuntque Chaldæi regi syriace : Rex, in sempiternum vive ! dic somnium servis tuis, et interpretationem ejus indicabimus. ⁵ Et respondens rex ait Chaldæis : Sermo recessit a me : nisi indicaveritis mihi somnium, et conjecturam ejus, peribitis vos, et domus vestræ publicabuntur. ⁶ Si autem somnium, et conjecturam ejus narraveritis, præmia, et dona, et honorem multum accipietis a me. Somnium igitur, et interpretationem ejus indicate mihi. ⁷ Responderunt secundo, atque dixerunt : Rex somnium dicat servis suis, et interpretationem illius indicabimus. ⁸ Respondit rex, et ait : Certe novi quod tempus redimitis, scientes quod recesserit a me sermo. ⁹ Si ergo somnium non indicaveritis mihi, una est de vobis sententia, quod interpretationem quoque fallacem, et deceptione plenam composueritis, ut loquamini mihi donec tempus pertranseat. Somnium itaque dicite mihi, ut sciam quod interpretationem quoque ejus veram loquamini. ¹⁰ Respondentes ergo Chaldæi coram rege, dixerunt : Non est homo super terram, qui sermonem tuum, rex, possit implere : sed neque regum quisquam magnus et potens verbum hujuscemodi sciscitatur ab omni ariolo, et mago, et Chaldæo. ¹¹ Sermo enim, quem tu quæris, rex, gravis est : nec reperietur quisquam qui indicet illum in conspectu regis, exceptis diis, quorum non est cum hominibus conversatio. ¹² Quo audito, rex, in furore et in ira magna, præcepit ut perirent omnes sapientes Babylonis. ¹³ Et egressa sententia, sapientes interficiebantur : quærebanturque Daniel et socii ejus, ut perirent.
