   ¹ In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream, and told the sum of the matters. ² Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. ³ And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. ⁴ The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it. ⁵ And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh. ⁶ After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it. ⁷ After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. ⁸ I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.
   ⁹ I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. ¹⁰ A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. ¹¹ I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame. ¹² As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time. ¹³ I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. ¹⁴ And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
   ¹⁵ I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me. ¹⁶ I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things. ¹⁷ These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth. ¹⁸ But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever. ¹⁹ Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet; ²⁰ And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows. ²¹ I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them; ²² Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom. ²³ Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. ²⁴ And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. ²⁵ And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. ²⁶ But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end. ²⁷ And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. ²⁸ Hitherto is the end of the matter. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.

Daniel 8

   ¹ In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first. ² And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai. ³ Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last. ⁴ I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great. ⁵ And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes. ⁶ And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his power. ⁷ And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand. ⁸ Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven. ⁹ And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land. ¹⁰ And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them. ¹¹ Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of the sanctuary was cast down. ¹² And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered. ¹³ Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? ¹⁴ And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.
   ¹⁵ And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man. ¹⁶ And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision. ¹⁷ So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision. ¹⁸ Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright. ¹⁹ And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be. ²⁰ The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia. ²¹ And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. ²² Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power. ²³ And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. ²⁴ And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. ²⁵ And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand. ²⁶ And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days. ²⁷ And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.

   ¹ In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans; ² In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. ³ And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:
   ⁴ And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments; ⁵ We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments: ⁶ Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. ⁷ O LORD, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee. ⁸ O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee. ⁹ To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him; ¹⁰ Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. ¹¹ Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him. ¹² And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem. ¹³ As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth. ¹⁴ Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice. ¹⁵ And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly. ¹⁶ O LORD, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us. ¹⁷ Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake. ¹⁸ O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies. ¹⁹ O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.
   ²⁰ And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God; ²¹ Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. ²² And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. ²³ At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. ²⁴ Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. ²⁵ Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. ²⁶ And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. ²⁷ And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Daniel 10

   ¹ In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long: and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision. ² In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. ³ I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled. ⁴ And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel; ⁵ Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz: ⁶ His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude. ⁷ And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves. ⁸ Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength. ⁹ Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground.
   ¹⁰ And, behold, an hand touched me, which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands. ¹¹ And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling. ¹² Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. ¹³ But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. ¹⁴ Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days. ¹⁵ And when he had spoken such words unto me, I set my face toward the ground, and I became dumb. ¹⁶ And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength. ¹⁷ For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me. ¹⁸ Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me, ¹⁹ And said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me. ²⁰ Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come. ²¹ But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.

Daniel 11

   ¹ Also I in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him. ² And now will I shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia. ³ And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will. ⁴ And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.
   ⁵ And the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion shall be a great dominion. ⁶ And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king's daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of the arm; neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times. ⁷ But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail: ⁸ And shall also carry captives into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall continue more years than the king of the north. ⁹ So the king of the south shall come into his kingdom, and shall return into his own land. ¹⁰ But his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces: and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his fortress. ¹¹ And the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand. ¹² And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it. ¹³ For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches. ¹⁴ And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbers of thy people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall. ¹⁵ So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities: and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand. ¹⁶ But he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed. ¹⁷ He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him. ¹⁸ After this shall he turn his face unto the isles, and shall take many: but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him. ¹⁹ Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land: but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found. ²⁰ Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.
   ²¹ And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries. ²² And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant. ²³ And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people. ²⁴ He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers' fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time. ²⁵ And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him. ²⁶ Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain. ²⁷ And both of these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed. ²⁸ Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land. ²⁹ At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter. ³⁰ For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant. ³¹ And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. ³² And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. ³³ And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. ³⁴ Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries. ³⁵ And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed. ³⁶ And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. ³⁷ Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. ³⁸ But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things. ³⁹ Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain. ⁴⁰ And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. ⁴¹ He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. ⁴² He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. ⁴³ But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps. ⁴⁴ But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many. ⁴⁵ And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

Daniel 12

   ¹ And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. ² And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. ³ And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. ⁴ But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
   ⁵ Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river. ⁶ And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? ⁷ And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. ⁸ And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? ⁹ And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. ¹⁰ Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. ¹¹ And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. ¹² Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. ¹³ But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.

¹ La première année du règne de Belshatsar sur Babylone, Daniel fit un rêve. Des visions se présentèrent à son esprit pendant qu'il était sur son lit. Ensuite il mit ce rêve par écrit et en raconta les points principaux.
² Daniel commença son récit: «Je regardais pendant ma vision nocturne, et voici que les quatre vents du ciel ont fait irruption sur la grande mer. ³ Quatre bêtes énormes sont sorties de la mer, différentes les unes des autres. ⁴ La première ressemblait à un lion et avait des ailes d'aigle. Pendant que je regardais, ses ailes ont été arrachées. Elle a été soulevée de terre et mise debout sur ses pattes, comme un homme, et un cœur d'homme lui a été donné. ⁵ Puis est apparue une deuxième bête, qui ressemblait à un ours. Elle se dressait sur un côté; elle avait trois côtes dans la gueule, entre les dents. On lui disait: ‘Lève-toi, mange beaucoup de viande!' ⁶ Après cela, j'ai vu une autre bête, qui ressemblait à un léopard. Elle avait quatre ailes sur le dos, comme celles d'un oiseau. Cette bête avait quatre têtes et la domination lui a été donnée. ⁷ Après cela, j'ai vu dans mes visions nocturnes une quatrième bête, redoutable, terrible et extraordinairement puissante. Elle avait de grandes dents en fer. Elle mangeait, brisait et piétinait ce qui restait. Elle était différente de toutes les bêtes précédentes et avait dix cornes. ⁸ Je regardais les cornes et j'ai vu une autre petite corne sortir du milieu d'elles. Trois des premières cornes ont été arrachées devant elle. Sur cette corne, il y avait des yeux pareils à ceux d'un homme et une bouche qui parlait avec arrogance.
⁹ »Pendant que je regardais, on a placé des trônes et l'Ancien des jours s'est assis. Son vêtement était aussi blanc que la neige et les cheveux de sa tête pareils à de la laine pure. Son trône était de flammes et ses roues étaient un feu dévorant. ¹⁰ Un fleuve de feu coulait et sortait de devant lui. Des dizaines de milliers le servaient et des centaines de millions se tenaient debout devant lui. Les juges se sont assis et des livres ont été ouverts. ¹¹ J'ai alors regardé, à cause des paroles arrogantes que prononçait la corne. Pendant que je regardais, la bête a été tuée. Son corps a été détruit et livré au feu pour être brûlé. ¹² Les autres bêtes ont été dépouillées de leur pouvoir, mais une prolongation de vie leur a été accordée pour un certain temps.
¹³ »Pendant que je regardais dans mes visions nocturnes, *quelqu'un qui ressemblait à un fils de l'homme est venu avec les nuées du ciel. Il s'est avancé vers l'Ancien des jours et on l'a fait approcher de lui. ¹⁴ On lui a donné la domination, la gloire et le règne, et tous les peuples, les nations et les hommes de toute langue l'ont servi. Sa domination est une domination éternelle qui ne cessera pas et son royaume ne sera jamais détruit.
¹⁵ »Moi, Daniel, j'ai eu l'esprit troublé au plus profond de moi et mes visions m'ont terrifié. ¹⁶ Je me suis approché de l'un de ceux qui se tenaient debout et lui ai demandé de me révéler la vérité à propos de tout cela. Il m'a répondu en me faisant connaître l'explication: ¹⁷ ‘Ces quatre bêtes énormes, ce sont quatre rois qui surgiront de la terre. ¹⁸ Cependant, les saints du Très-Haut recevront le royaume et ils le posséderont éternellement, d'éternité en éternité.'
¹⁹ »Ensuite j'ai désiré savoir la vérité sur la quatrième bête, celle qui était différente de toutes les autres, extrêmement terrible, qui avait des dents en fer et des ongles en bronze, qui mangeait, brisait et piétinait ce qu'il restait. ²⁰ J'ai aussi désiré savoir la vérité au sujet des dix cornes qu'elle avait sur la tête ainsi qu'au sujet de l'autre, celle qui était sortie et devant laquelle trois étaient tombées, la corne qui avait des yeux et une bouche parlant avec arrogance et qui paraissait plus grande que les autres. ²¹ J'ai vu cette corne faire la guerre aux saints et l'emporter sur eux, ²² jusqu'au moment où l'Ancien des jours est venu faire justice aux saints du Très-Haut. Le moment où les saints ont pris possession du royaume est alors arrivé.
²³ »Voici ce qu'il m'a dit: ‘La quatrième bête, c'est un quatrième royaume qui existera sur la terre, différent de tous les royaumes. Il dévorera toute la terre, la piétinera et la brisera. ²⁴ Les dix cornes, ce sont dix rois qui surgiront de ce royaume. Un autre surgira après eux. Il sera différent des premiers et abaissera trois rois. ²⁵ Par ses paroles il s'opposera au Très-Haut. Il opprimera les saints du Très-Haut et projettera de changer les temps et la loi. Les saints seront livrés à son pouvoir pendant un temps, deux temps et la moitié d'un temps. ²⁶ Puis le jugement viendra et on lui retirera sa domination: elle sera définitivement détruite et anéantie. ²⁷ Le royaume, la domination et la grandeur de tous les royaumes présents sous le ciel seront donnés au peuple des saints du Très-Haut. Son règne est un règne éternel et tous les dominateurs le serviront et lui obéiront.'
²⁸ »Ici prend fin le message. Moi, Daniel, j'ai été si terrifié par mes pensées que j'en ai changé de couleur. J'ai gardé cette parole dans mon cœur.»

Daniel 8

Vision du bélier et du bouc

¹ La troisième année de règne de Belshatsar, moi, Daniel, j'ai eu une vision, après la première que j'avais eue. ² Dans cette vision, j'ai vu que je me trouvais à Suse, la capitale, dans la province d'Elam. Dans la vision, j'ai vu que j'étais près du fleuve Oulaï.
³ J'ai levé les yeux et regardé: un bélier se tenait devant le fleuve et il avait des cornes. Ces cornes étaient hautes. L'une était plus haute que l'autre, mais c'était la plus haute qui avait poussé la dernière. ⁴ J'ai vu le bélier frapper avec ses cornes vers l'ouest, le nord et le sud. Aucun animal ne pouvait lui résister et il n'y avait personne pour délivrer ses victimes de son pouvoir. Il faisait ce qu'il voulait et il est devenu grand.
⁵ Pendant que je regardais attentivement, un bouc est arrivé de l'ouest, parcourant toute la surface de la terre sans toucher la terre. Ce bouc avait une corne impressionnante entre les yeux. ⁶ Il est arrivé jusqu'au bélier qui avait des cornes et que j'avais vu se tenir devant le fleuve, et il a foncé sur lui dans toute l'ardeur de sa force. ⁷ Je l'ai vu s'approcher du bélier et manifester son amertume contre lui: il a frappé le bélier et lui a brisé les deux cornes sans que le bélier n'ait la force de lui résister. Il l'a jeté par terre et l'a piétiné, et il n'y a eu personne pour délivrer le bélier de son pouvoir. ⁸ Le bouc est devenu très grand mais, lorsqu'il a été puissant, sa grande corne s'est brisée. Quatre grandes cornes ont poussé à sa place, aux quatre coins du ciel.
⁹ De l'une d'elles est sortie une petite corne. Elle a beaucoup grandi vers le sud, vers l'est et vers le plus beau des pays. ¹⁰ Elle a grandi jusqu'au niveau des corps célestes. Elle a fait tomber par terre une partie de ces corps et des étoiles, et elle les a piétinés. ¹¹ Elle a grandi jusqu'au niveau du chef de l'armée. Elle lui a enlevé le sacrifice perpétuel et a bouleversé les fondations de son sanctuaire. ¹² L'armée lui a été livrée avec le sacrifice perpétuel, à cause de la transgression. La corne a jeté la vérité par terre et réussi dans ses entreprises. ¹³ J'ai entendu un saint parler et un autre saint dire à celui qui parlait: «Jusqu'à quand durera cette vision à propos du sacrifice perpétuel et de la transgression dévastatrice? Jusqu'à quand le sanctuaire et l'armée seront-ils livrés au piétinement?» ¹⁴ Et il m'a dit: «Encore 2300 soirs et matins, puis le sanctuaire sera purifié.»
¹⁵ Tandis que moi, Daniel, j'avais cette vision et que je cherchais à la comprendre, quelqu'un qui avait l'apparence d'un guerrier se tenait en face de moi. ¹⁶ J'ai entendu la voix d'un homme au milieu du fleuve Oulaï; il a crié: «Gabriel, fais comprendre à celui-ci ce qu'il a vu!» ¹⁷ Il est alors venu près de l'endroit où je me trouvais. Terrifié à son approche, je suis tombé le visage contre terre. Il m'a dit: «Sois attentif, fils de l'homme, car la vision concerne le moment de la fin.» ¹⁸ Pendant qu'il me parlait, j'étais plongé dans une profonde torpeur, le visage contre terre. Il m'a touché et m'a fait me tenir debout là où je me trouvais. ¹⁹ Puis il m'a dit: «Je vais te faire connaître ce qui arrivera au terme de la colère, car il y a un moment fixé pour la fin. ²⁰ Le bélier que tu as vu et qui avait des cornes, ce sont les rois des Mèdes et des Perses. ²¹ Le bouc, c'est le roi de Grèce. La grande corne entre ses yeux, c'est le premier roi. ²² Les quatre cornes qui l'ont remplacée, une fois qu'elle a été brisée, ce sont quatre royaumes qui surgiront de cette nation, mais sans avoir autant de force qu'elle. ²³ A la fin de leur règne, quand les pécheurs auront mis le comble à leur révolte, un roi au visage dur et expert en énigmes surgira. ²⁴ Sa puissance grandira, mais non par sa propre force. Il accomplira d'extraordinaires dévastations, il réussira dans ses entreprises, il détruira les puissants et le peuple des saints. ²⁵ Grâce à son habileté, il réussira dans ses manœuvres trompeuses, et il aura le cœur rempli d'arrogance. Il fera mourir beaucoup d'hommes qui vivaient dans la tranquillité et il se dressera contre le prince des princes. Cependant, il sera brisé sans aucune intervention extérieure. ²⁶ Ce que tu as vu à propos des soirs et des matins et qui t'a été dit est vrai. Quant à toi, tiens cette vision cachée, car elle concerne une époque éloignée.»
²⁷ Moi, Daniel, je suis resté affaibli et malade durant plusieurs jours. Puis je me suis levé pour m'occuper des affaires du roi, mais j'étais effaré à cause de la vision et je ne la comprenais pas.

Daniel 9

Les 70 semaines

¹ La première année de règne de Darius, fils d'Assuérus, de la dynastie des Mèdes, sur le royaume des Babyloniens, ² la première année de son règne, moi, Daniel, je me suis aperçu dans les livres que le nombre d'années indiqué par l'Eternel au prophète Jérémie pour la durée de la dévastation de Jérusalem était de 70. ³ Je me suis tourné vers le Seigneur Dieu en le recherchant avec des prières et des supplications, en jeûnant et en me couvrant d'un sac et de cendre. ⁴ J'ai prié l'Eternel, mon Dieu, et je lui ai fait cette confession:
«Seigneur, Dieu grand et redoutable, toi qui gardes ton alliance et qui traites avec bonté ceux qui t'aiment et qui obéissent à tes commandements! ⁵ Nous avons péché, nous avons agi en hommes pervertis, nous avons été méchants et rebelles, nous nous sommes détournés de tes commandements et de tes règles. ⁶ Nous n'avons pas écouté tes serviteurs, les prophètes, lorsqu'ils ont parlé en ton nom à nos rois, à nos chefs, à nos ancêtres et à tout le peuple du pays.
⁷ »Seigneur, tu es juste. Quant à nous, nous ne pouvons que rougir de honte, comme c'est le cas aujourd'hui pour les Judéens, les habitants de Jérusalem et tout Israël, pour ceux qui sont près et ceux qui sont loin, dans tous les pays où tu les as chassés à cause des infidélités dont ils se sont rendus coupables envers toi. ⁸ Eternel, nous ne pouvons que rougir de honte, tout comme nos rois, nos chefs et nos ancêtres, parce que nous avons péché contre toi.
⁹ »Le Seigneur, notre Dieu, est rempli de compassion et de pardon. Pourtant, nous nous sommes révoltés contre lui. ¹⁰ Nous n'avons pas écouté l'Eternel, notre Dieu, pour suivre ses lois alors qu'il les avait placées devant nous par ses serviteurs les prophètes. ¹¹ Tout Israël a transgressé ta loi et s'est détourné pour ne pas t'écouter. Alors se sont déversées sur nous les malédictions et les imprécations qui sont écrites dans la loi de Moïse, serviteur de Dieu, parce que nous avons péché contre Dieu. ¹² Il a accompli les paroles qu'il avait prononcées contre nous et contre les magistrats qui nous ont gouvernés. Il a fait venir sur nous un malheur si grand qu'il ne s'est jamais rien produit, sous tout le ciel, de pareil à ce qui s'est produit à Jérusalem.
¹³ »C'est en conformité avec ce qui est écrit dans la loi de Moïse que tout ce malheur nous a frappés, et nous n'avons pas imploré l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous ne nous sommes pas détournés de nos fautes, nous n'avons pas prêté attention à ta vérité. ¹⁴ L'Eternel a veillé sur ce malheur et l'a fait venir sur nous parce que l'Eternel, notre Dieu, est juste dans tout ce qu'il fait, mais nous n'avons pas écouté sa voix.
¹⁵ »Et maintenant, Seigneur, notre Dieu, toi qui as fait sortir ton peuple d'Egypte par une main puissante et qui t'es ainsi fait la réputation qui est la tienne aujourd'hui, nous avons péché, nous avons agi avec méchanceté. ¹⁶ Seigneur, en conformité avec tes actes de justice, que ta colère et ta fureur s'écartent de ta ville, Jérusalem, de ta montagne sainte! En effet, à cause de nos péchés et des fautes de nos ancêtres, Jérusalem et ton peuple sont un objet d'insulte pour tous ceux qui nous entourent.
¹⁷ »Maintenant donc, notre Dieu, écoute la prière et les supplications de ton serviteur et fais briller ton visage au-dessus de ton sanctuaire dévasté, pour l'amour du Seigneur! ¹⁸ Mon Dieu, tends l'oreille et écoute! Ouvre les yeux et regarde nos ruines, regarde la ville à laquelle ton nom est associé! En effet, ce n'est pas en nous appuyant sur nos actes de justice que nous te présentons nos supplications, mais en nous appuyant sur ta grande compassion. ¹⁹ Seigneur, écoute! Seigneur, pardonne! Seigneur, sois attentif et agis sans tarder par amour pour toi, mon Dieu! En effet, ton nom est associé à ta ville et à ton peuple.»
²⁰ Je parlais encore, je priais, je reconnaissais mon péché et celui de mon peuple, d'Israël, et je présentais ma supplication à l'Eternel, mon Dieu, en faveur de la montagne sainte de mon Dieu, ²¹ je parlais encore dans ma prière quand l'homme, Gabriel, celui que j'avais vu dans ma précédente vision, s'est approché de moi d'un vol rapide, au moment de l'offrande du soir. ²² Il m'a enseigné et a parlé avec moi. Il m'a dit:
«Daniel, je suis venu maintenant pour ouvrir ta compréhension. ²³ Lorsque tu as commencé à prier, une parole est sortie et je viens pour te l'annoncer, car tu es considéré comme précieux. Sois attentif à la parole et comprends la vision! ²⁴ Ce sont 70 semaines qui ont été fixées pour ton peuple et pour ta ville sainte pour faire cesser la révolte et mettre un terme aux péchés, pour expier la faute et amener la justice éternelle, pour marquer d'un sceau la vision et le prophète et pour consacrer par onction le lieu très saint.
²⁵ »Sache-le donc et sois attentif! Depuis le moment où la parole a annoncé que Jérusalem serait restaurée et reconstruite jusqu'au Messie, au conducteur, il y a 7 semaines et 62 semaines. Les places et les fossés seront restaurés et reconstruits, mais ce sera une période de détresse. ²⁶ Après les 62 semaines, le Messie sera exclu et il n'y aura personne pour lui venir en aide. Le peuple d'un prince qui viendra détruira la ville et le sanctuaire, puis sa fin arrivera comme par une inondation. Il est décidé que les dévastations dureront jusqu'au terme de la guerre. ²⁷ Il imposera une alliance d'une semaine à beaucoup, et au milieu de la semaine il fera cesser le sacrifice et l'offrande. Le dévastateur commettra les pires monstruosités jusqu'à ce que l'anéantissement et ce qui a été décidé se déversent sur lui.»

Daniel 10

Une apparition terrifiante

¹ La troisième année de règne de Cyrus, le roi de Perse, une parole fut révélée à Daniel, appelé Beltshatsar. Cette parole est vraie et annonce un grand combat. Daniel fut attentif à cette parole et en eut la compréhension à travers ce qu'il voyait.
² A cette époque-là, moi, Daniel, j'ai été trois semaines dans le deuil. ³ Je n'ai mangé aucune nourriture raffinée, il n'est entré ni viande ni vin dans ma bouche et je ne me suis pas parfumé jusqu'à la fin des trois semaines.
⁴ Le vingt-quatrième jour du premier mois, j'étais au bord du grand fleuve, c'est-à-dire le Tigre. ⁵ J'ai levé les yeux et j'ai vu un homme habillé de lin. Il avait autour de la taille une ceinture en or d'Uphaz. ⁶ Son corps était comme de chrysolithe, son visage brillait comme l'éclair, ses yeux étaient pareils à des flammes de feu, ses bras et ses pieds ressemblaient à du bronze poli et le son de sa voix était pareil au bruit d'une grande foule.
⁷ Moi, Daniel, j'ai été le seul à voir cette apparition: les hommes qui étaient avec moi ne l'ont pas vue, mais une grande frayeur s'est emparée d'eux et ils ont pris la fuite pour se cacher. ⁸ Resté seul, j'ai vu cette grande apparition et me suis retrouvé sans force. Mes traits se sont décomposés et j'ai perdu toute force. ⁹ J'ai entendu le son de ses paroles et en l'entendant je suis tombé, dans une profonde torpeur, le visage contre terre. ¹⁰ Mais une main m'a touché et m'a mis, tout tremblant, sur mes genoux et les paumes de mes mains. ¹¹ Puis l'homme m'a dit: «Daniel, homme considéré comme précieux, sois attentif aux paroles que je vais te dire et tiens-toi debout là où tu es! En effet, j'ai été maintenant envoyé vers toi.» Lorsqu'il m'a dit cela, je me suis tenu debout, tout tremblant.
¹² Il m'a dit: «Daniel, n'aie pas peur, car dès le premier jour où tu as eu à cœur de comprendre et de t'humilier devant ton Dieu, tes paroles ont été entendues, et c'est à cause d'elles que je suis venu. ¹³ Le chef du royaume de Perse m'a résisté 21 jours, mais Michel, l'un des principaux chefs, est venu à mon aide et je suis resté là, près des rois de Perse. ¹⁴ Je viens maintenant pour te faire comprendre ce qui doit arriver à ton peuple dans l'avenir, car la vision concerne encore cette époque-là.»
¹⁵ Pendant qu'il m'adressait ces paroles, je regardais par terre et restais silencieux. ¹⁶ Quelqu'un qui avait une apparence humaine a touché mes lèvres. J'ai ouvert la bouche et me suis mis à parler; j'ai dit à celui qui se tenait en face de moi: «Mon seigneur, j'ai été bouleversé de douleur par cette apparition et j'ai perdu toute force. ¹⁷ Comment pourrais-je, moi ton serviteur, te parler à toi, mon seigneur? Désormais je n'ai plus de force et il ne me reste plus de souffle.» ¹⁸ Alors celui qui avait apparence humaine m'a de nouveau touché et m'a fortifié; ¹⁹ il m'a dit: «N'aie pas peur, homme considéré comme précieux! Que la paix soit avec toi! Fortifie-toi! Fortifie-toi!» Pendant qu'il me parlait, j'ai repris des forces. J'ai alors dit: «Que mon seigneur parle, car tu m'as fortifié.»
²⁰ Il m'a dit: «Sais-tu pourquoi je suis venu vers toi? Maintenant je retourne combattre le chef de la Perse et, quand je partirai, le chef de la Grèce viendra. ²¹ Cependant, je veux t'annoncer ce qui est écrit dans le livre de vérité. Personne ne me soutient contre ceux-là, excepté Michel, votre chef.

Daniel 11

¹ »Quant à moi, la première année de règne de Darius le Mède, je me tenais auprès de lui pour lui donner force et protection.

Profanation du sanctuaire

² Maintenant, je vais t'annoncer la vérité.
»Il y aura encore trois rois qui régneront sur la Perse. Le quatrième amassera plus de richesses que tous les autres et, quand il aura gagné en force grâce à ses richesses, il soulèvera tout le monde contre le royaume de Grèce. ³ Cependant, un roi vaillant se dressera. Il dominera avec une grande puissance et fera ce qu'il voudra. ⁴ Une fois qu'il se sera dressé, son royaume sera brisé et divisé aux quatre coins du ciel. Son royaume n'appartiendra pas à ses descendants et ne sera pas aussi puissant que le sien, car il sera déchiré et passera à d'autres qu'eux.
⁵ »Le roi du sud deviendra fort. Mais un de ses chefs sera plus fort que lui et exercera sa propre domination, une domination puissante. ⁶ Au bout de quelques années ils concluront une alliance et la fille du roi du sud s'unira au roi du nord pour concrétiser leur accord. Mais elle ne tiendra pas le coup et ni lui ni son armée ne pourront résister. Elle sera cédée avec ceux qui l'auront amenée, avec son père et avec celui qui aura été son soutien à cette époque-là.
⁷ »Un rejeton de même racine qu'elle se dressera à sa place. Il viendra attaquer l'armée du roi du nord et pénétrera dans sa forteresse. Il interviendra contre eux et deviendra puissant. ⁸ Il enlèvera même et transportera en Egypte leurs dieux et leurs idoles en métal fondu, ainsi que leurs objets précieux en argent et en or. Puis il restera quelques années à distance du roi du nord. ⁹ Celui-ci marchera contre le royaume du roi du sud, mais il devra revenir dans son territoire.
¹⁰ »Ses fils se mettront en campagne et rassembleront d'immenses troupes. Elles viendront et déferleront comme un torrent, déborderont, puis reviendront et pousseront les hostilités jusqu'à la forteresse du roi du sud. ¹¹ Le roi du sud s'irritera, il sortira et combattra contre le roi du nord; il mobilisera une grande troupe et les troupes du roi du nord seront livrées à son pouvoir. ¹² Cette troupe sera fière et le cœur du roi du sud se remplira d'orgueil. Il fera des dizaines de milliers de victimes, mais il ne triomphera pas. ¹³ En effet, le roi du nord reviendra et mobilisera une grande troupe, plus nombreuse que la première. Au bout de quelque temps, de quelques années, il se mettra en marche avec une grande armée et de grandes richesses.
¹⁴ »A cette époque-là, beaucoup se dresseront contre le roi du sud. Des hommes violents issus de ton peuple se soulèveront pour accomplir la vision, et ils trébucheront. ¹⁵ Le roi du nord viendra. Il construira des remblais et s'emparera des villes fortifiées. Les troupes du sud et l'élite du roi ne résisteront pas, elles n'en auront pas la force. ¹⁶ Celui qui marchera contre lui fera ce qu'il voudra sans que personne ne lui résiste. Il s'arrêtera dans le plus beau des pays, exterminant tout ce qui tombera sous sa main. ¹⁷ Il formera le projet d'arriver avec toutes les forces de son royaume et de conclure un accord avec le roi du sud; il lui donnera sa fille en mariage dans l'intention de détruire sa royauté, mais cela n'arrivera pas et il n'obtiendra pas ce qu'il voulait. ¹⁸ Il s'orientera vers les îles et en prendra beaucoup, mais un chef militaire mettra fin à la honte qu'il voulait lui attirer et la fera retomber sur lui. ¹⁹ Il se dirigera ensuite vers les forteresses de son pays où il trébuchera et tombera, et on ne le trouvera plus.
²⁰ »Celui qui le remplacera fera venir un oppresseur dans la plus belle partie du royaume, mais il sera brisé en quelques jours, et ce ne sera ni par la colère ni par la guerre.
²¹ »Un homme méprisé prendra sa place sans qu'on lui ait donné la dignité royale. Il arrivera dans une période de tranquillité et s'emparera du royaume grâce à des intrigues. ²² Les troupes qui déferleront comme un torrent seront submergées devant lui et brisées, de même que le chef de l'alliance. ²³ Une fois qu'on se sera rallié à lui, il recourra à la tromperie. Il se mettra en marche et aura le dessus avec peu de monde. ²⁴ Il pénétrera en toute tranquillité dans les endroits les plus fertiles de la province; il fera ce que n'avaient pas fait ses prédécesseurs ni ses ancêtres: il distribuera le butin, les biens et les richesses. Il formera des plans contre les forteresses, et cela pendant un certain temps. ²⁵ A la tête d'une grande armée, il déploiera sa force et son courage contre le roi du sud. Ce dernier s'engagera dans la guerre avec une grande et très puissante armée, mais il ne résistera pas, car on formera des plans contre lui: ²⁶ ceux qui mangeront des plats servis à sa table causeront sa perte. Son armée se dissoudra et les morts tomberont en grand nombre. ²⁷ Les deux rois chercheront dans leur cœur à faire du mal, et à la même table ils parleront avec fausseté. Mais cela ne réussira pas, car la fin n'arrivera qu'au moment fixé.

Découragé, il rebroussera chemin, puis dans sa rage il agira contre l'alliance sainte. Il reviendra et traitera avec bienveillance ceux qui auront abandonné l'alliance sainte. ³¹ Des troupes se présenteront sur son ordre et elles souilleront le sanctuaire, la forteresse. Elles feront cesser le sacrifice perpétuel et dresseront l'abominable dévastation. ³² Il corrompra par des flatteries ceux qui violent l'alliance, mais les membres du peuple qui connaîtront leur Dieu agiront avec fermeté, ³³ et les plus perspicaces donneront instruction à beaucoup. Ils se heurteront pour un temps à l'épée et à la flamme, à la déportation et au pillage. ³⁴ Durant cette période ils recevront un peu d'aide et beaucoup se rallieront à eux de façon hypocrite. ³⁵ Quelques-uns des hommes perspicaces trébucheront afin d'être affinés, purifiés et épurés jusqu'au moment de la fin, car elle n'arrivera qu'au moment fixé.
³⁶ »Le roi fera ce qu'il voudra. Il sera plein d'arrogance, se grandira au-dessus de tous les dieux et prononcera des paroles extraordinaires contre le Dieu des dieux. Il prospérera jusqu'à ce que la colère soit à son comble, car ce qui est décidé s'accomplira. ³⁷ Il ne prêtera attention ni aux dieux de ses ancêtres, ni à celui que désirent les femmes. Il ne prêtera attention à aucun dieu, car il se grandira au-dessus de tous. ³⁸ C'est le dieu des forteresses qu'il honorera sur son piédestal. A ce dieu que ne connaissaient pas ses ancêtres, il rendra hommage avec de l'or et de l'argent, avec des pierres précieuses et des objets de valeur. ³⁹ C'est avec ce dieu étranger qu'il agira contre les endroits fortifiés, et il comblera d'honneurs ceux qui le reconnaîtront: il leur donnera la domination sur beaucoup et leur distribuera des terres en guise de récompense.
⁴⁰ »Au moment de la fin, le roi du sud l'affrontera, et le roi du nord fondra sur lui comme une tempête, avec des chars et des cavaliers, ainsi que de nombreux bateaux. Il pénétrera dans tous les pays, déferlera comme un torrent et débordera. ⁴¹ Il pénétrera dans le plus beau des pays et beaucoup trébucheront, mais voici ceux qui seront délivrés de son pouvoir: Edom, Moab et les principaux des Ammonites. ⁴² Il étendra son pouvoir sur divers pays et l'Egypte n'y échappera pas: ⁴³ il se rendra maître des trésors d'or et d'argent et de tous les biens précieux de l'Egypte. Les Libyens et les Ethiopiens marcheront à sa suite. ⁴⁴ Des nouvelles de l'est et du nord le troubleront et il partira, dans une grande colère, détruire et exterminer beaucoup d'hommes. ⁴⁵ Il dressera les tentes de son palais entre les mers, vers la glorieuse et sainte montagne. Puis il arrivera à sa fin sans que personne ne l'aide.

Appel à la persévérance

¹ »A cette époque-là se dressera Michel, le grand chef, celui qui veille sur les enfants de ton peuple. *Ce sera une période de détresse telle qu'il n'y en aura pas eu de pareille depuis qu'une nation existe jusqu'à cette époque-là. A ce moment-là, ceux de ton peuple qu'on trouvera inscrits dans le livre seront sauvés. ² Beaucoup de ceux qui dorment dans la poussière de la terre se réveilleront, les uns pour la vie éternelle, les autres pour la honte, pour l'horreur éternelle. ³ Ceux qui auront été perspicaces brilleront comme la splendeur du ciel, et ceux qui auront enseigné la justice à beaucoup brilleront comme les étoiles, pour toujours et à perpétuité. ⁴ Quant à toi, Daniel, tiens ces paroles cachées et marque le livre du sceau du secret jusqu'au moment de la fin! Beaucoup seront perplexes, mais la connaissance augmentera.»
⁵ Moi, Daniel, je regardais et j'ai vu deux autres hommes se tenir debout, l'un sur une rive du fleuve, l'autre sur l'autre rive. ⁶ L'un d'eux a dit à l'homme habillé de lin, qui se tenait au-dessus de l'eau du fleuve: «Quand viendra la fin de ces événements extraordinaires?» ⁷ Et j'ai entendu l'homme habillé de lin, celui qui se tenait au-dessus de l'eau du fleuve: il a levé sa main droite et sa main gauche vers le ciel et il a juré par celui qui vit éternellement que ce serait dans un temps, deux temps et la moitié d'un temps, et que tout cela prendrait fin quand la force du peuple saint serait entièrement épuisée.
⁸ J'ai entendu, mais sans comprendre, et j'ai dit: «Mon seigneur, quelle sera l'issue de tout cela?» ⁹ Il a répondu: «Vas-y, Daniel, car ces paroles seront tenues cachées et marquées du sceau du secret jusqu'au moment de la fin. ¹⁰ Beaucoup seront purifiés, épurés et affinés. Les méchants feront le mal et aucun d'eux ne comprendra, tandis que ceux qui seront perspicaces comprendront. ¹¹ Depuis le moment où le sacrifice perpétuel sera supprimé et où l'abominable dévastation sera dressée, il y aura 1290 jours. ¹² Heureux celui qui attendra et qui arrivera jusqu'à 1335 jours! ¹³ Quant à toi, marche vers ta fin!    ⁴ Et cum steterit, conteretur regnum ejus, et dividetur in quatuor ventos cæli : sed non in posteros ejus, neque secundum potentiam illius, qua dominatus est : lacerabitur enim regnum ejus etiam in externos, exceptis his.
   ⁵ Et confortabitur rex austri : et de principibus ejus prævalebit super eum, et dominabitur ditione : multa enim dominatio ejus.
   ⁶ Et post finem annorum fœderabuntur : filiaque regis austri veniet ad regem aquilonis facere amicitiam, et non obtinebit fortitudinem brachii, nec stabit semen ejus : et tradetur ipsa, et qui adduxerunt eam adolescentes ejus, et qui confortabant eam in temporibus.
   ⁷ Et stabit de germine radicum ejus plantatio : et veniet cum exercitu, et ingredietur provinciam regis aquilonis : et abutetur eis, et obtinebit.
   ⁸ Insuper et deos eorum, et sculptilia, vasa quoque pretiosa argenti et auri, captiva ducet in Ægyptum : ipse prævalebit adversus regem aquilonis.
   ⁹ Et intrabit in regnum rex austri, et revertetur ad terram suam.
   ¹⁰ Filii autem ejus provocabuntur, et congregabunt multitudinem exercituum plurimorum : et veniet properans, et inundans : et revertetur, et concitabitur, et congredietur cum robore ejus.
   ¹¹ Et provocatus rex austri egredietur, et pugnabit adversus regem aquilonis, et præparabit multitudinem nimiam, et dabitur multitudo in manu ejus.
   ¹² Et capiet multitudinem, et exaltabitur cor ejus, et dejiciet multa millia, sed non prævalebit.
   ¹³ Convertetur enim rex aquilonis, et præparabit multitudinem multo majorem quam prius : et in fine temporum annorumque veniet properans cum exercitu magno, et opibus nimiis.
   ¹⁴ Et in temporibus illis multi consurgent adversus regem austri : filii quoque prævaricatorum populi tui extollentur ut impleant visionem, et corruent.
   ¹⁵ Et veniet rex aquilonis, et comportabit aggerem, et capiet urbes munitissimas : et brachia austri non sustinebunt, et consurgent electi ejus ad resistendum, et non erit fortitudo.
   ¹⁶ Et faciet veniens super eum juxta placitum suum, et non erit qui stet contra faciem ejus : et stabit in terra inclyta, et consumetur in manu ejus.
   ¹⁷ Et ponet faciem suam ut veniat ad tenendum universum regnum ejus, et recta faciet cum eo : et filiam feminarum dabit ei, ut evertat illud : et non stabit, nec illius erit.
   ¹⁸ Et convertet faciem suam ad insulas, et capiet multas : et cessare faciet principem opprobrii sui, et opprobrium ejus convertetur in eum.
   ¹⁹ Et convertet faciem suam ad imperium terræ suæ, et impinget, et corruet, et non invenietur.
   ²⁰ Et stabit in loco ejus vilissimus, et indignus decore regio : et in paucis diebus conteretur, non in furore, nec in prælio.
   ²¹ Et stabit in loco ejus despectus, et non tribuetur ei honor regius : et veniet clam, et obtinebit regnum in fraudulentia.
   ²² Et brachia pugnantis expugnabuntur a facie ejus, et conterentur : insuper et dux fœderis.
   ²³ Et post amicitias, cum eo faciet dolum : et ascendet, et superabit in modico populo.
   ²⁴ Et abundantes, et uberes urbes ingredietur : et faciet quæ non fecerunt patres ejus, et patres patrum ejus : rapinas, et prædam, et divitias eorum dissipabit, et contra firmissimas cogitationes inibit : et hoc usque ad tempus.
   ²⁵ Et concitabitur fortitudo ejus, et cor ejus adversum regem austri in exercitu magno : et rex austri provocabitur ad bellum multis auxiliis, et fortibus nimis : et non stabunt, quia inibunt adversus eum consilia.
   ²⁶ Et comedentes panem cum eo, conterent illum, exercitusque ejus opprimetur : et cadent interfecti plurimi.
   ²⁷ Duorum quoque regum cor erit ut malefaciant, et ad mensam unam mendacium loquentur : et non proficient, quia adhuc finis in aliud tempus.
   ²⁸ Et revertetur in terram suam cum opibus multis : et cor ejus adversum testamentum sanctum, et faciet, et revertetur in terram suam.
   ²⁹ Statuto tempore revertetur, et veniet ad austrum : et non erit priori simile novissimum.
   ³⁰ Et venient super eum trieres, et Romani : et percutietur, et revertetur, et indignabitur contra testamentum sanctuarii, et faciet : reverteturque, et cogitabit adversum eos qui dereliquerunt testamentum sanctuarii.
   ³¹ Et brachia ex eo stabunt, et polluent sanctuarium fortitudinis, et auferent juge sacrificium : et dabunt abominationem in desolationem.
   ³² Et impii in testamentum simulabunt fraudulenter : populus autem sciens Deum suum, obtinebit, et faciet.
   ³³ Et docti in populo docebunt plurimos : et ruent in gladio, et in flamma, et in captivitate, et in rapina dierum.
   ³⁴ Cumque corruerint, sublevabuntur auxilio parvulo : et applicabuntur eis plurimi fraudulenter.
   ³⁵ Et de eruditis ruent, ut conflentur, et eligantur, et dealbentur usque ad tempus præfinitum : quia adhuc aliud tempus erit.
   ³⁶ Et faciet juxta voluntatem suam rex, et elevabitur, et magnificabitur adversus omnem deum : et adversus Deum deorum loquetur magnifica, et dirigetur, donec compleatur iracundia : perpetrata quippe est definitio.
   ³⁷ Et Deum patrum suorum non reputabit : et erit in concupiscentiis feminarum, nec quemquam deorum curabit, quia adversum universa consurget.
   ³⁸ Deum autem Maozim in loco suo venerabitur : et deum, quem ignoraverunt patres ejus, colet auro, et argento, et lapide pretioso, rebusque pretiosis.
   ³⁹ Et faciet ut muniat Maozim cum deo alieno, quem cognovit, et multiplicabit gloriam, et dabit eis potestatem in multis, et terram dividet gratuito.
   ⁴⁰ Et in tempore præfinito præliabitur adversus eum rex austri, et quasi tempestas veniet contra illum rex aquilonis in curribus, et in equitibus, et in classe magna, et ingredietur terras, et conteret, et pertransiet.
   ⁴¹ Et introibit in terram gloriosam, et multæ corruent : hæ autem solæ salvabuntur de manu ejus, Edom, et Moab, et principium filiorum Ammon.
   ⁴² Et mittet manum suam in terras : et terra Ægypti non effugiet.
   ⁴³ Et dominabitur thesaurorum auri, et argenti, et in omnibus pretiosis Ægypti : per Libyam quoque, et Æthiopiam transibit.
   ⁴⁴ Et fama turbabit eum ab oriente et ab aquilone : et veniet in multitudine magna ut conterat et interficiat plurimos.
   ⁴⁵ Et figet tabernaculum suum Apadno inter maria, super montem inclytum et sanctum : et veniet usque ad summitatem ejus, et nemo auxiliabitur ei.

Daniel 12

   ¹ In tempore autem illo consurget Michaël princeps magnus, qui stat pro filiis populi tui : et veniet tempus quale non fuit ab eo ex quo gentes esse cœperunt usque ad tempus illud. Et in tempore illo salvabitur populus tuus, omnis qui inventus fuerit scriptus in libro.
   ² Et multi de his qui dormiunt in terræ pulvere evigilabunt, alii in vitam æternam, et alii in opprobrium ut videant semper.
   ³ Qui autem docti fuerint, fulgebunt quasi splendor firmamenti : et qui ad justitiam erudiunt multos, quasi stellæ in perpetuas æternitates.
   ⁴ Tu autem Daniel, claude sermones, et signa librum usque ad tempus statutum : plurimi pertransibunt, et multiplex erit scientia.
   ⁵ Et vidi ego Daniel, et ecce quasi duo alii stabant : unus hinc super ripam fluminis, et alius inde ex altera ripa fluminis.
   ⁶ Et dixi viro qui erat indutus lineis, qui stabat super aquas fluminis : Usquequo finis horum mirabilium ?
   ⁷ Et audivi virum qui indutus erat lineis, qui stabat super aquas fluminis, cum elevasset dexteram et sinistram suam in cælum, et jurasset per viventem in æternum, quia in tempus, et tempora, et dimidium temporis. Et cum completa fuerit dispersio manus populi sancti, complebuntur universa hæc.
   ⁸ Et ego audivi, et non intellexi. Et dixi : Domine mi, quid erit post hæc ?
   ⁹ Et ait : Vade, Daniel, quia clausi sunt signatique sermones usque ad præfinitum tempus.
   ¹⁰ Eligentur, et dealbabuntur, et quasi ignis probabuntur multi : et impie agent impii, neque intelligent omnes impii : porro docti intelligent.
   ¹¹ Et a tempore cum ablatum fuerit juge sacrificium, et posita fuerit abominatio in desolationem, dies mille ducenti nonaginta.
   ¹² Beatus qui exspectat, et pervenit usque ad dies mille trecentos triginta quinque.
   ¹³ Tu autem vade ad præfinitum : et requiesces, et stabis in sorte tua in finem dierum.
