¹ Pendant qu'Esdras, pleurant et prosterné devant la maison de Dieu, faisait cette prière et cette confession, il s'était réuni auprès de lui une assemblée très nombreuse d'Israélites, hommes, femmes et enfants ; car le peuple versait beaucoup de larmes. ² Alors Séchénias, fils de Jéhiel, d'entre les fils d'Élam, prit la parole et dit à Esdras : "Nous avons péché contre notre Dieu en établissant chez nous des femmes étrangères, appartenant à la population du pays. Et maintenant, il reste à cet égard à Israël une espérance. ³ Concluons maintenant une alliance avec notre Dieu, en vue de renvoyer toutes les femmes et les enfants issus d'elles, selon le conseil de mon seigneur et de ceux qui craignent devant les commandements de notre Dieu. Et qu'il soit fait selon la Loi. ⁴ Lève-toi, car c'est à toi de prendre en main cette affaire. Nous serons avec toi. Courage, et à l'oeuvre !" ⁵ Esdras se leva, et il fit jurer aux chefs des prêtres, des lévites et de tout Israël, de faire comme il venait d'être dit ; et ils le jurèrent.

   ¹ Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore. ² And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing. ³ Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law. ⁴ Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it. ⁵ Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this word. And they sware.
