¹⁴ I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. ¹⁵ As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. ¹⁶ And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. ¹⁷ Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. ¹⁸ No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
   ¹⁹ There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings. ²⁰ And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him? ²¹ Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?
   ²² And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter. ²³ And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch. ²⁴ Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. ²⁵ Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. ²⁶ But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. ²⁷ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: ²⁸ And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. ²⁹ My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. ³⁰ I and my Father are one. ³¹ Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. ³² Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? ³³ The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. ³⁴ Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? ³⁵ If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; ³⁶ Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? ³⁷ If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. ³⁸ But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.
   ³⁹ Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand, ⁴⁰ And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode. ⁴¹ And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true. ⁴² And many believed on him there.

   ¹ Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. ² (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) ³ Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. ⁴ When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. ⁵ Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. ⁶ When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. ⁷ Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. ⁸ His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? ⁹ Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. ¹⁰ But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. ¹¹ These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. ¹² Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. ¹³ Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. ¹⁴ Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. ¹⁵ And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. ¹⁶ Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
   ¹⁷ Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. ¹⁸ Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: ¹⁹ And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. ²⁰ Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. ²¹ Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. ²² But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. ²³ Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. ²⁴ Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. ²⁵ Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: ²⁶ And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? ²⁷ She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. ²⁸ And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. ²⁹ As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. ³⁰ Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. ³¹ The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. ³² Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
   ³³ When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled. ³⁴ And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. ³⁵ Jesus wept. ³⁶ Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! ³⁷ And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? ³⁸ Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. ³⁹ Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. ⁴⁰ Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? ⁴¹ Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. ⁴² And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. ⁴³ And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. ⁴⁴ And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
   ⁴⁵ Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. ⁴⁶ But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. ⁴⁷ Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. ⁴⁸ If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. ⁴⁹ And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, ⁵⁰ Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. ⁵¹ And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; ⁵² And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. ⁵³ Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. ⁵⁴ Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples. ⁵⁵ And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. ⁵⁶ Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? ⁵⁷ Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him.

   ¹ Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. ² There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. ³ Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. ⁴ Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, ⁵ Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? ⁶ This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. ⁷ Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. ⁸ For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always. ⁹ Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. ¹⁰ But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; ¹¹ Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.
   ¹² On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, ¹³ Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. ¹⁴ And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, ¹⁵ Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt. ¹⁶ These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him. ¹⁷ The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. ¹⁸ For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle. ¹⁹ The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.
   ²⁰ And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast: ²¹ The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. ²² Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus. ²³ And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. ²⁴ Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. ²⁵ He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. ²⁶ If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.
   ²⁷ Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. ²⁸ Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. ²⁹ The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him. ³⁰ Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. ³¹ Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. ³² And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. ³³ This he said, signifying what death he should die. ³⁴ The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? ³⁵ Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. ³⁶ While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
   ³⁷ But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: ³⁸ That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? ³⁹ Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, ⁴⁰ He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. ⁴¹ These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
   ⁴² Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: ⁴³ For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
   ⁴⁴ Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. ⁴⁵ And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. ⁴⁶ I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. ⁴⁷ And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. ⁴⁸ He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. ⁴⁹ For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. ⁵⁰ And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

   ¹ Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. ² And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; ³ Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; ⁴ He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. ⁵ After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. ⁶ Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? ⁷ Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. ⁸ Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. ⁹ Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. ¹⁰ Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. ¹¹ For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. ¹² So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? ¹³ Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. ¹⁴ If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. ¹⁵ For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. ¹⁶ Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. ¹⁷ If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
   ¹⁸ I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. ¹⁹ Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. ²⁰ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. ²¹ When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. ²² Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. ²³ Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. ²⁴ Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake. ²⁵ He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? ²⁶ Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. ²⁷ And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. ²⁸ Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. ²⁹ For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. ³⁰ He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
   ³¹ Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. ³² If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him. ³³ Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. ³⁴ A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. ³⁵ By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
   ³⁶ Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards. ³⁷ Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake. ³⁸ Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

   ¹ Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. ² In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. ³ And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

   ¹² Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. ¹³ And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. ¹⁴ If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
   ¹⁵ If ye love me, keep my commandments. ¹⁶ And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; ¹⁷ Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
   ¹⁸ I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. ¹⁹ Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. ²⁰ At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. ²¹ He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. ²² Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? ²³ Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. ²⁴ He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.
   ²⁵ These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. ²⁶ But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

¹⁴ Moi, je suis le bon berger. Je connais mes brebis et elles me connaissent, ¹⁵ tout comme le Père me connaît et comme je connais le Père. Je donne ma vie pour mes brebis. ¹⁶ J'ai encore d'autres brebis, qui ne sont pas de cet enclos; celles-là aussi, il faut que je les amène; elles écouteront ma voix et il y aura un seul troupeau, un seul berger. ¹⁷ Le Père m'aime, parce que je donne ma vie pour la reprendre ensuite. ¹⁸ Personne ne me l'enlève, mais je la donne de moi-même. J'ai le pouvoir de la donner et j'ai le pouvoir de la reprendre. Tel est l'ordre que j'ai reçu de mon Père.»
¹⁹ Ces paroles provoquèrent de nouveau une division parmi les Juifs. ²⁰ Beaucoup d'entre eux disaient: «Il a un démon, il est fou. Pourquoi l'écoutez-vous?» ²¹ D'autres disaient: «Ce ne sont pas les paroles d'un démoniaque. Un démon peut-il ouvrir les yeux des aveugles?»
²² On célébrait alors à Jérusalem la fête de la dédicace. C'était l'hiver. ²³ Jésus marchait dans le temple, sous le portique de Salomon. ²⁴ Les Juifs l'entourèrent et lui dirent: «Jusqu'à quand nous laisseras-tu dans l'incertitude? Si tu es le Messie, dis-le-nous franchement.»
²⁵ Jésus leur répondit: «Je vous l'ai dit et vous ne croyez pas. Les œuvres que je fais au nom de mon Père témoignent en ma faveur, ²⁶ mais vous ne croyez pas parce que vous ne faites pas partie de mes brebis, [comme je vous l'ai dit]. ²⁷ Mes brebis écoutent ma voix, je les connais et elles me suivent. ²⁸ Je leur donne la vie éternelle. Elles ne périront jamais et personne ne pourra les arracher à ma main. ²⁹ Mon Père, qui me les a données, est plus grand que tous et personne ne peut les arracher à la main de mon Père. ³⁰ Le Père et moi, nous sommes un.»
³¹ Alors les Juifs prirent de nouveau des pierres pour le lapider.
³² Jésus leur dit: «Je vous ai fait voir beaucoup de belles œuvres qui viennent de mon Père. A cause de laquelle me lapidez-vous?»
³³ Les Juifs lui répondirent: «Ce n'est pas pour une belle œuvre que nous te lapidons, mais pour un blasphème, parce que toi, qui es un être humain, tu te fais Dieu.»
³⁴ Jésus leur répondit: «N'est-il pas écrit dans votre loi: J'ai dit: ‘Vous êtes des dieux' ? ³⁵ S'il est vrai qu'elle a appelé dieux ceux à qui la parole de Dieu a été adressée et si l'Ecriture ne peut pas être annulée, ³⁶ comment pouvez-vous dire à celui que le Père a consacré et envoyé dans le monde: ‘Tu blasphèmes', et cela parce que j'ai affirmé: ‘Je suis le Fils de Dieu'? ³⁷ Si je ne fais pas les œuvres de mon Père, ne me croyez pas! ³⁸ Mais si je les fais, même si vous ne me croyez pas, croyez à ces œuvres afin de savoir et de reconnaître que le Père est en moi et que je suis en lui.»
³⁹ Voilà pourquoi ils cherchaient encore à l'arrêter, mais il leur échappa.
⁴⁰ Jésus retourna de l'autre côté du Jourdain, à l'endroit où Jean avait d'abord baptisé, et il y resta. ⁴¹ Beaucoup de gens vinrent vers lui; ils disaient: «Jean n'a fait aucun signe miraculeux, mais tout ce qu'il a dit à propos de cet homme était vrai.» ⁴² Et là, beaucoup crurent en lui.

Résurrection de Lazare

¹ Il y avait un homme malade; c'était Lazare de Béthanie, le village de Marie et de sa sœur Marthe. ² - Marie était celle qui versa du parfum sur les pieds du Seigneur et qui les essuya avec ses cheveux; c'était son frère Lazare qui était malade. - ³ Les sœurs envoyèrent dire à Jésus: «Seigneur, celui que tu aimes est malade.»
⁴ A cette nouvelle, Jésus dit: «Cette maladie n'aboutira pas à la mort, mais elle servira à la gloire de Dieu, afin qu'à travers elle la gloire du Fils de Dieu soit révélée.»
⁵ Or, Jésus aimait Marthe, sa sœur et Lazare. ⁶ Quand il eut appris que Lazare était malade, il resta encore deux jours à l'endroit où il était. ⁷ Puis il dit aux disciples: «Retournons en Judée.»
⁸ Les disciples lui dirent: «Maître, tout récemment les Juifs cherchaient à te lapider et tu retournes là-bas?»
⁹ Jésus répondit: «N'y a-t-il pas douze heures de jour? Si quelqu'un marche pendant le jour, il ne trébuche pas, parce qu'il voit la lumière de ce monde; ¹⁰ mais si quelqu'un marche pendant la nuit, il trébuche, parce que la lumière n'est pas en lui.» ¹¹ Après ces paroles, il leur dit: «Notre ami Lazare s'est endormi, mais je vais aller le réveiller.»
¹² Les disciples lui dirent: «Seigneur, s'il s'est endormi, il sera guéri.»
¹³ En fait, Jésus avait parlé de la mort de Lazare, mais ils crurent qu'il parlait de l'assoupissement du sommeil. ¹⁴ Jésus leur dit alors ouvertement: «Lazare est mort. ¹⁵ Et à cause de vous, afin que vous croyiez, je me réjouis de ce que je n'étais pas là. Mais allons vers lui.»
¹⁶ Là-dessus Thomas, appelé Didyme, dit aux autres disciples: «Allons-y, nous aussi, afin de mourir avec lui.»
¹⁷ A son arrivée, Jésus trouva que Lazare était depuis quatre jours déjà dans le tombeau. ¹⁸ Béthanie était près de Jérusalem, à moins de trois kilomètres, ¹⁹ et beaucoup de Juifs étaient venus chez Marthe et Marie pour les consoler de la mort de leur frère.
²⁰ Lorsque Marthe apprit que Jésus arrivait, elle alla à sa rencontre, tandis que Marie restait assise à la maison. ²¹ Marthe dit à Jésus: «Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort. ²² [Cependant,] même maintenant, je sais que tout ce que tu demanderas à Dieu, Dieu te l'accordera.»
²³ Jésus lui dit: «Ton frère ressuscitera.»
²⁴ «Je sais, lui répondit Marthe, qu'il ressuscitera lors de la résurrection, le dernier jour.»
²⁵ Jésus lui dit: «C'est moi qui suis la résurrection et la vie. Celui qui croit en moi vivra, même s'il meurt; ²⁶ et toute personne qui vit et croit en moi ne mourra jamais. Crois-tu cela?»
²⁷ Elle lui dit: «Oui, Seigneur, je crois que tu es le Messie, le Fils de Dieu, qui devait venir dans le monde.»
²⁸ Après avoir dit cela, elle alla appeler secrètement sa sœur Marie en lui disant: «Le maître est ici et te demande.» ²⁹ A ces mots, Marie se leva sans attendre et alla vers lui. ³⁰ Jésus n'était pas encore entré dans le village, mais il était à l'endroit où Marthe l'avait rencontré. ³¹ Les Juifs qui étaient avec Marie dans la maison et qui la consolaient la virent se lever soudain et sortir; ils la suivirent en disant: «Elle va au tombeau pour y pleurer.»
³² Marie arriva à l'endroit où était Jésus. Quand elle le vit, elle tomba à ses pieds et lui dit: «Seigneur, si tu avais été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort.»
³³ En la voyant pleurer, elle et les Juifs venus avec elle, Jésus fut profondément indigné et bouleversé. ³⁴ Il dit: «Où l'avez-vous mis?»
«Seigneur, lui répondit-on, viens et tu verras.»
³⁵ Jésus pleura. ³⁶ Les Juifs dirent alors: «Voyez comme il l'aimait!» ³⁷ Et quelques-uns d'entre eux dirent: «Lui qui a ouvert les yeux de l'aveugle, ne pouvait-il pas aussi faire en sorte que cet homme ne meure pas?»
³⁸ Jésus, de nouveau profondément indigné, se rendit au tombeau. C'était une grotte; une pierre fermait l'entrée. ³⁹ Jésus dit: «Enlevez la pierre.»
Marthe, la sœur du mort, lui dit: «Seigneur, il sent déjà, car il y a quatre jours qu'il est là.»
⁴⁰ Jésus lui dit: «Ne t'ai-je pas dit que si tu crois, tu verras la gloire de Dieu?»
⁴¹ Ils enlevèrent donc la pierre [de l'endroit où le mort avait été déposé]. Jésus leva alors les yeux et dit: «Père, je te remercie de ce que tu m'as écouté. ⁴² Pour ma part, je savais que tu m'écoutes toujours, mais j'ai parlé à cause de la foule qui m'entoure, afin qu'ils croient que c'est toi qui m'as envoyé.» ⁴³ Après avoir dit cela, il cria d'une voix forte: «Lazare, sors!»
⁴⁴ Et le mort sortit, les pieds et les mains attachés par des bandelettes et le visage enveloppé d'un linge. Jésus leur dit: «Détachez-le et laissez-le s'en aller.»
⁴⁵ Beaucoup de Juifs qui étaient venus auprès de Marie et qui virent ce que Jésus avait fait crurent en lui. ⁴⁶ Mais quelques-uns d'entre eux allèrent trouver les pharisiens et leur racontèrent ce que Jésus avait fait.
⁴⁷ Alors les chefs des prêtres et les pharisiens rassemblèrent le sanhédrin et dirent: «Qu'allons-nous faire? En effet, cet homme fait beaucoup de signes miraculeux. ⁴⁸ Si nous le laissons faire, tous croiront en lui et les Romains viendront détruire et notre ville et notre nation.»
⁴⁹ L'un d'eux, Caïphe, qui était grand-prêtre cette année-là, leur dit: «Vous n'y comprenez rien; ⁵⁰ vous ne réfléchissez pas qu'il est dans notre intérêt qu'un seul homme meure pour le peuple et que la nation tout entière ne disparaisse pas.» ⁵¹ Or il ne dit pas cela de lui-même, mais comme il était grand-prêtre cette année-là, il prophétisa que Jésus devait mourir pour la nation. ⁵² Et ce n'était pas pour la nation seulement, c'était aussi afin de réunir en un seul corps les enfants de Dieu dispersés.
⁵³ Dès ce jour, ils tinrent conseil pour le faire mourir. ⁵⁴ C'est pourquoi Jésus ne se montra plus ouvertement parmi les Juifs, mais il se retira dans la région voisine du désert, dans une ville appelée Ephraïm, où il resta avec ses disciples.
⁵⁵ La Pâque des Juifs était proche et beaucoup de gens montèrent de la campagne à Jérusalem avant la Pâque pour se purifier. ⁵⁶ Ils cherchaient Jésus et se disaient les uns aux autres dans le temple: «Qu'en pensez-vous? Ne viendra-t-il pas à la fête?» ⁵⁷ Or les chefs des prêtres et les pharisiens avaient donné l'ordre que, si quelqu'un savait où était Jésus, il le dénonce, afin qu'on l'arrête.

Entrée triomphale de Jésus à Jérusalem

¹ Six jours avant la Pâque, Jésus arriva à Béthanie où était Lazare qu'il avait ressuscité. ² Là, on lui offrit un repas; Marthe servait et Lazare était parmi ceux qui se trouvaient à table avec lui. ³ Marie prit un demi-litre d'un parfum de nard pur très cher, en versa sur les pieds de Jésus et lui essuya les pieds avec ses cheveux; la maison fut remplie de l'odeur du parfum.
⁴ Un de ses disciples, Judas l'Iscariot, [fils de Simon,] celui qui allait le trahir, dit: ⁵ «Pourquoi n'a-t-on pas vendu ce parfum 300 pièces d'argent pour les donner aux pauvres?» ⁶ Il disait cela non parce qu'il se souciait des pauvres, mais parce que c'était un voleur et, comme il tenait la bourse, il prenait ce qu'on y mettait.
⁷ Jésus dit alors: «Laisse-la! Elle a gardé ce parfum pour le jour de mon ensevelissement. ⁸ En effet, vous avez toujours les pauvres avec vous, tandis que moi, vous ne m'aurez pas toujours.»
⁹ Une foule de Juifs apprirent que Jésus était à Béthanie; ils y vinrent, non seulement à cause de lui, mais aussi pour voir Lazare qu'il avait ressuscité. ¹⁰ Les chefs des prêtres décidèrent de faire mourir aussi Lazare ¹¹ parce que beaucoup de Juifs les quittaient et croyaient en Jésus à cause de lui.
¹² Le lendemain, une foule nombreuse de personnes venues à la fête apprirent que Jésus se rendait à Jérusalem. ¹³ Elles prirent des branches de palmiers et allèrent à sa rencontre en criant: «Hosanna! Béni soit celui qui vient au nom du Seigneur, le roi d'Israël!»
¹⁴ Jésus trouva un ânon et s'assit dessus, conformément à ce qui est écrit: ¹⁵ N'aie pas peur, fille de Sion! Voici ton roi qui vient, assis sur le petit d'une ânesse.
¹⁶ Sur le moment, ses disciples ne comprirent pas ce qui se passait, mais, lorsque Jésus fut dans sa gloire, ils se souvinrent que ces choses étaient écrites à son sujet et qu'on les avait faites pour lui.
¹⁷ Tous ceux qui étaient avec Jésus quand il avait appelé Lazare à sortir du tombeau et l'avait ressuscité lui rendaient témoignage. ¹⁸ C'est aussi la raison pour laquelle la foule vint à sa rencontre: parce qu'elle avait appris qu'il avait fait ce signe miraculeux. ¹⁹ Les pharisiens se dirent donc les uns aux autres: «Vous voyez que vous ne gagnez rien; voici que tout le monde se met à le suivre.»
²⁰ Il y avait des non-Juifs parmi ceux qui étaient montés pour adorer pendant la fête. ²¹ Ils s'adressèrent à Philippe, qui était de Bethsaïda en Galilée, et lui demandèrent: «Seigneur, nous voudrions voir Jésus.» ²² Philippe alla le dire à André, puis André et Philippe le dirent à Jésus.
²³ Jésus leur répondit: «L'heure où le Fils de l'homme va être élevé dans sa gloire est venue. ²⁴ En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, si le grain de blé tombé en terre ne meurt pas, il reste seul; mais s'il meurt, il porte beaucoup de fruit. ²⁵ Celui qui aime sa vie la perdra et celui qui déteste sa vie dans ce monde la conservera pour la vie éternelle. ²⁶ Si quelqu'un me sert, qu'il me suive, et là où je suis, là aussi sera mon serviteur. Si quelqu'un me sert, le Père l'honorera. ²⁷ Maintenant mon âme est troublée. Et que dirai-je? Père, délivre-moi de cette heure? Mais c'est pour cela que je suis venu jusqu'à cette heure. ²⁸ Père, révèle la gloire de ton nom!»
Une voix vint alors du ciel: «J'ai révélé sa gloire et je la révélerai encore.»
²⁹ La foule qui était là, et qui avait entendu, disait que c'était le tonnerre. D'autres disaient: «Un ange lui a parlé.»
³⁰ Jésus reprit la parole: «Ce n'est pas à cause de moi que cette voix s'est fait entendre, c'est à cause de vous. ³¹ C'est maintenant qu'a lieu le jugement de ce monde; c'est maintenant que le prince de ce monde va être jeté dehors. ³² Et moi, quand j'aurai été élevé de la terre, j'attirerai tous les hommes à moi.» ³³ - Par ces paroles, il indiquait de quelle mort il allait mourir. -
³⁴ La foule lui répondit: «Nous avons appris par la loi que le Messie vivra éternellement. Comment donc peux-tu dire: ‘Il faut que le Fils de l'homme soit élevé'? Qui est ce Fils de l'homme?»
³⁵ Jésus leur dit: «La lumière est encore pour un peu de temps parmi vous. Marchez pendant que vous avez la lumière afin que les ténèbres ne vous surprennent pas, car celui qui marche dans les ténèbres ne sait pas où il va. ³⁶ Pendant que vous avez la lumière, croyez en elle afin de devenir des enfants de lumière.»
Après avoir dit cela, Jésus s'en alla et se cacha loin d'eux.
³⁷ Malgré tous les signes miraculeux qu'il avait faits devant eux, ils ne croyaient pas en lui. ³⁸ Ainsi s'accomplit la parole annoncée par le prophète Esaïe: Seigneur, qui a cru à notre prédication? Et à qui le bras du Seigneur a-t-il été révélé?  ³⁹ Esaïe a dit encore pourquoi ils ne pouvaient pas croire: ⁴⁰ Il a aveuglé leurs yeux et il a endurci leur cœur pour qu'ils ne voient pas de leurs yeux, qu'ils ne comprennent pas dans leur cœur, qu'ils ne se convertissent pas et que je ne les guérisse pas.  ⁴¹ Esaïe dit cela lorsqu'il vit sa gloire et qu'il parla de lui.
⁴² Cependant, même parmi les chefs, beaucoup crurent en lui; mais, à cause des pharisiens, ils ne le déclaraient pas, de crainte d'être exclus de la synagogue. ⁴³ En effet, ils aimèrent la gloire des hommes plus que la gloire de Dieu.
⁴⁴ Quant à Jésus, il s'écria: «Celui qui croit en moi ne croit pas seulement en moi, mais en celui qui m'a envoyé, ⁴⁵ et celui qui me voit voit celui qui m'a envoyé. ⁴⁶ Moi, la lumière, je suis venu dans le monde afin que quiconque croit en moi ne reste pas dans les ténèbres. ⁴⁷ Si quelqu'un entend mes paroles mais n'y croit pas, ce n'est pas moi qui le juge, car je suis venu non pour juger le monde, mais pour le sauver. ⁴⁸ Celui qui me rejette et qui n'accepte pas mes paroles a son juge: la parole que j'ai annoncée, c'est elle qui le jugera, le dernier jour. ⁴⁹ En effet, je n'ai pas parlé de ma propre initiative, mais le Père, qui m'a envoyé, m'a prescrit lui-même ce que je dois dire et annoncer, ⁵⁰ et je sais que son commandement est la vie éternelle.C'est pourquoi ce que j'annonce, je l'annonce comme le Père me l'a dit.»

¹ Avant la fête de la Pâque, Jésus, sachant que son heure était venue de passer de ce monde au Père et ayant aimé ceux qui lui appartenaient dans le monde, les aima jusqu'à l'extrême. ² C'était pendant le souper. Le diable avait déjà mis dans le cœur de Judas l'Iscariot, fils de Simon, l'intention de le trahir. ³ Jésus savait que le Père avait tout remis entre ses mains, qu'il était venu de Dieu et qu'il retournait vers Dieu. ⁴ Il se leva de table, quitta ses vêtements et prit un linge qu'il mit autour de sa taille. ⁵ Ensuite il versa de l'eau dans un bassin et il commença à laver les pieds des disciples et à les essuyer avec le linge qu'il avait autour de la taille.
⁶ Il arriva donc vers Simon Pierre qui lui dit: «Toi, Seigneur, tu me laves les pieds!»
⁷ Jésus lui répondit: «Ce que je fais, tu ne le sais pas maintenant, mais tu le comprendras par la suite.»
⁸ Pierre lui dit: «Non, jamais tu ne me laveras les pieds.»
Jésus lui répondit: «Si je ne te lave pas, tu n'auras pas de part avec moi.»
⁹ Simon Pierre lui dit: «Seigneur, non seulement les pieds, mais encore les mains et la tête!»
¹⁰ Jésus lui dit: «Celui qui s'est baigné n'a besoin que de se laver les pieds pour être entièrement pur, et vous êtes purs, mais pas tous.» ¹¹ En effet, il connaissait celui qui était prêt à le trahir; voilà pourquoi il dit: «Vous n'êtes pas tous purs.»
¹² Après leur avoir lavé les pieds, il reprit ses vêtements, se remit à table et leur dit: «Comprenez-vous ce que je vous ai fait? ¹³ Vous m'appelez Maître et Seigneur, et vous avez raison, car je le suis. ¹⁴ Si donc je vous ai lavé les pieds, moi, le Seigneur et le Maître, vous devez aussi vous laver les pieds les uns aux autres, ¹⁵ car je vous ai donné un exemple afin que vous fassiez comme je vous ai fait. ¹⁶ En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, le serviteur n'est pas plus grand que son seigneur, ni l'apôtre plus grand que celui qui l'a envoyé. ¹⁷ Si vous savez cela, vous êtes heureux, pourvu que vous le mettiez en pratique.
¹⁸ »Je ne parle pas de vous tous: je connais ceux que j'ai choisis. Mais il faut que l'Ecriture s'accomplisse: Celui qui mange le pain avec moi a levé son talon contre moi.  ¹⁹ Je vous le dis déjà maintenant, avant que cela n'arrive, afin que, lorsque cela arrivera, vous croyiez que moi, je suis. ²⁰ En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, qui reçoit celui que j'aurai envoyé me reçoit, moi, et qui me reçoit reçoit celui qui m'a envoyé.»
²¹ Après avoir dit ces paroles, Jésus fut profondément troublé, et il déclara solennellement: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, l'un de vous me trahira.»
²² Les disciples se regardaient les uns les autres, sans savoir de qui il parlait. ²³ Un des disciples, celui que Jésus aimait, était à table à côté de Jésus. ²⁴ Simon Pierre lui fit donc signe de demander qui était celui dont parlait Jésus. ²⁵ Ce disciple se pencha vers Jésus et lui dit: «Seigneur, qui est-ce?»
²⁶ Jésus répondit: «C'est celui à qui je donnerai le morceau que je vais tremper.»
Puis il trempa le morceau et le donna à Judas, fils de Simon, l'Iscariot. ²⁷ Dès que Judas eut pris le morceau, Satan entra en lui.
Jésus lui dit: «Ce que tu fais, fais-le rapidement.» ²⁸ Aucun de ceux qui étaient à table ne comprit pourquoi il lui disait cela. ²⁹ Comme Judas tenait la bourse, quelques-uns pensaient que Jésus lui disait: «Achète ce dont nous avons besoin pour la fête» ou qu'il lui demandait de donner quelque chose aux pauvres.
³⁰ Après avoir pris le morceau, Judas sortit aussitôt. Il faisait nuit.
³¹ Lorsque Judas fut sorti, Jésus dit: «Maintenant, la gloire du Fils de l'homme a été révélée et la gloire de Dieu a été révélée en lui. ³² [Si la gloire de Dieu a été révélée en lui,] Dieu aussi révélera sa gloire en lui-même, et il la révélera très bientôt. ³³ Mes petits enfants, je suis encore avec vous pour un peu de temps. Vous me chercherez, et ce que j'ai dit aux Juifs: ‘Vous ne pouvez pas venir où je vais', je vous le dis à vous aussi maintenant.
³⁴ »Je vous donne un commandement nouveau: Aimez-vous les uns les autres. Comme je vous ai aimés, vous aussi, aimez-vous les uns les autres. ³⁵ C'est à cela que tous reconnaîtront que vous êtes mes disciples: si vous avez de l'amour les uns pour les autres.»
³⁶ Simon Pierre lui dit: «Seigneur, où vas-tu?»
Jésus répondit: «Tu ne peux pas me suivre maintenant là où je vais, mais tu m'y suivras plus tard.»
³⁷ «Seigneur, lui dit Pierre, pourquoi ne puis-je pas te suivre maintenant? Je donnerai ma vie pour toi.»
³⁸ Jésus répondit: «Tu donneras ta vie pour moi? En vérité, en vérité, je te le dis, le coq ne chantera pas avant que tu ne m'aies renié trois fois.

Jean 14

Promesse de l'envoi du Saint-Esprit

¹ »Que votre cœur ne se trouble pas! Croyez en Dieu, croyez aussi en moi. ² Il y a beaucoup de demeures dans la maison de mon Père. Si ce n'était pas le cas, je vous l'aurais dit. Je vais vous préparer une place. ³ Et puisque je vais vous préparer une place, je reviendrai et je vous prendrai avec moi afin que, là où je suis, vous y soyez aussi. ⁴ Vous savez où je vais et vous en savez le chemin.»
⁵ Thomas lui dit: «Seigneur, nous ne savons pas où tu vas. Comment pouvons-nous en savoir le chemin?»
⁶ Jésus lui dit: «C'est moi qui suis le chemin, la vérité et la vie. On ne vient au Père qu'en passant par moi. ⁷ Si vous me connaissiez, vous connaîtriez aussi mon Père. Et dès maintenant vous le connaissez et vous l'avez vu.»
⁸ Philippe lui dit: «Seigneur, montre-nous le Père, et cela nous suffit.»
⁹ Jésus lui dit: «Il y a si longtemps que je suis avec vous et tu ne me connais pas, Philippe! Celui qui m'a vu a vu le Père. Comment peux-tu dire: ‘Montre-nous le Père'? ¹⁰ Ne crois-tu pas que je suis dans le Père et que le Père est en moi? Les paroles que je vous dis, je ne les dis pas de moi-même; c'est le Père qui vit en moi qui fait lui-même ces œuvres. ¹¹ Croyez-moi: je suis dans le Père et le Père est en moi. Sinon, croyez[-moi] au moins à cause de ces œuvres!
¹² »En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, celui qui croit en moi fera aussi les œuvres que je fais, et il en fera même de plus grandes, parce que je vais vers mon Père. ¹³ Tout ce que vous demanderez en mon nom, je le ferai afin que la gloire du Père soit révélée dans le Fils. ¹⁴ Si vous [me] demandez quelque chose en mon nom, je le ferai.
¹⁵ »Si vous m'aimez, respectez mes commandements. ¹⁶ Quant à moi, je prierai le Père et il vous donnera un autre défenseur afin qu'il reste éternellement avec vous: ¹⁷ l'Esprit de la vérité, que le monde ne peut pas accepter parce qu'il ne le voit pas et ne le connaît pas. [Mais] vous, vous le connaissez, car il reste avec vous et il sera en vous. ¹⁸ Je ne vous laisserai pas orphelins, je reviens vers vous. ¹⁹ Encore un peu de temps et le monde ne me verra plus; mais vous, vous me verrez parce que je vis et que vous vivrez aussi. ²⁰ Ce jour-là, vous saurez que je suis en mon Père, que vous êtes en moi et moi en vous. ²¹ Celui qui a mes commandements et qui les garde, c'est celui qui m'aime; celui qui m'aime sera aimé de mon Père et moi aussi, je l'aimerai et je me ferai connaître à lui.»
²² Jude – à distinguer de l'Iscariot – lui dit: «Seigneur, comment se fait-il que tu te feras connaître à nous et non au monde?»
²³ Jésus lui répondit: «Si quelqu'un m'aime, il gardera ma parole et mon Père l'aimera; nous viendrons vers lui et nous établirons domicile chez lui. ²⁴ Celui qui ne m'aime pas ne garde pas mes paroles, et la parole que vous entendez ne vient pas de moi, mais du Père qui m'a envoyé.
²⁵ »Je vous ai dit cela pendant que je suis encore avec vous, ²⁶ mais le défenseur, l'Esprit saint que le Père enverra en mon nom, vous enseignera toutes choses et vous rappellera tout ce que je vous ai dit.

   ¹ ἦν δέ τις ἀσθενῶν λάζαρος ἀπὸ βηθανίας ἐκ τῆς κώμης μαρίας καὶ μάρθας τῆς ἀδελφῆς αὐτῆς ² ἦν δὲ μαρία ἡ ἀλείψασα τὸν κύριον μύρῳ καὶ ἐκμάξασα τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ ταῖς θριξὶν αὐτῆς ἡς ὁ ἀδελφὸς τοῦτο δὲ ἀφ᾽ ἑαυτοῦ οὐκ εἶπεν ἀλλὰ ἀρχιερεὺς ὢν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου προεφήτευσεν ὅτι ἔμελλεν ὁ ἰησοῦς ἀποθνῄσκειν ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἔθνους ⁵² καὶ οὐχ ὑπὲρ τοῦ ἔθνους μόνον ἀλλ᾽ ἵνα καὶ τὰ τέκνα τοῦ θεοῦ τὰ ἐκάθισεν ἐπ᾽ αὐτό καθώς ἐστιν γεγραμμένον ¹⁵ μὴ φοβοῦ θύγατερ σιών ἰδού, ὁ βασιλεύς σου ἔρχεται καθήμενος ἐπὶ πῶλον ὄνου ¹⁶ ταῦτα δὲ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ τὸ πρῶτον ἀλλ᾽ ὅτε ἐδοξάσθη ὁ ἰησοῦς τότε ἐμνήσθησαν ὅτι ταῦτα ἦν ἐπ᾽ αὐτῷ γεγραμμένα καὶ ταῦτα ἐποίησαν αὐτῷ ¹⁷ ἐμαρτύρει οὖν ὁ ὄχλος ὁ ὢν μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ ὅτε τὸν λάζαρον ἐφώνησεν ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου καὶ ἤγειρεν αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν ¹⁸ διὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ ὁ ὄχλος ὅτι ἤκουσεν τοῦτο αὐτὸν πεποιηκέναι τὸ σημεῖον ¹⁹ οἱ οὖν φαρισαῖοι εἶπον πρὸς ἑαυτούς θεωρεῖτε ὅτι οὐκ ὠφελεῖτε οὐδέν ἴδε ὁ κόσμος ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ ἀπῆλθεν ²⁰ ἦσαν δὲ τινες ἕλληνές ἐκ τῶν ἀναβαινόντων ἵνα προσκυνήσωσιν ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ ²¹ οὗτοι οὖν προσῆλθον φιλίππῳ τῷ ἀπὸ βηθσαϊδὰ τῆς γαλιλαίας καὶ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν λέγοντες κύριε θέλομεν τὸν ἰησοῦν ἰδεῖν ²² ἔρχεται φίλιππος καὶ λέγει τῷ ἀνδρέᾳ καὶ πάλιν ἀνδρέας καὶ φίλιππος λέγουσιν τῷ ἰησοῦ ²³ ὁ δὲ ἰησοῦς ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτοῖς λέγων, ἐλήλυθεν ἡ ὥρα ἵνα δοξασθῇ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ²⁴ ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐὰν μὴ ὁ κόκκος τοῦ σίτου πεσὼν εἰς τὴν γῆν ἀποθάνῃ αὐτὸς μόνος μένει ἐὰν δὲ ἀποθάνῃ πολὺν καρπὸν φέρει ²⁵ ὁ φιλῶν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἀπολέσει αὐτήν καὶ ὁ μισῶν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ τούτῳ εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον φυλάξει αὐτήν ²⁶ ἐὰν ἐμοί διακονῇ τις ἐμοὶ ἀκολουθείτω καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ἐκεῖ καὶ ὁ διάκονος ὁ ἐμὸς ἔσται καὶ ἐάν τις ἐμοὶ διακονῇ τιμήσει αὐτὸν ὁ πατήρ ²⁷ νῦν ἡ ψυχή μου τετάρακται καὶ τί εἴπω πάτερ σῶσόν με ἐκ τῆς ὥρας ταύτης ἀλλὰ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον εἰς τὴν ὥραν ταύτην ²⁸ πάτερ δόξασόν σου τὸ ὄνομα ἦλθεν οὖν φωνὴ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἐδόξασα καὶ πάλιν δοξάσω ²⁹ ὁ οὖν ὄχλος ὁ ἑστὼς καὶ ἀκούσας ἔλεγεν βροντὴν γεγονέναι ἄλλοι ἔλεγον ἄγγελος αὐτῷ λελάληκεν ³⁰ ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν οὐ δι᾽ ἐμὲ αὕτη ἡ φωνὴ γέγονεν ἀλλὰ δι᾽ ὑμᾶς ³¹ νῦν κρίσις ἐστὶν τοῦ κόσμου τούτου νῦν ὁ ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἐκβληθήσεται ἔξω ³² κἀγὼ ἐὰν ὑψωθῶ ἐκ τῆς γῆς πάντας ἑλκύσω πρὸς ἐμαυτόν ³³ τοῦτο δὲ ἔλεγεν σημαίνων ποίῳ θανάτῳ ἤμελλεν ἀποθνῄσκειν ³⁴ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ ὁ ὄχλος ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν ἐκ τοῦ νόμου ὅτι ὁ χριστὸς μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ πῶς σὺ λέγεις ὅτι δεῖ ὑψωθῆναι τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ³⁵ εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς ὁ ἰησοῦς ἔτι μικρὸν χρόνον τὸ φῶς μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν ἐστιν περιπατεῖτε ἕως τὸ φῶς ἔχετε ἵνα μὴ σκοτία ὑμᾶς καταλάβῃ καὶ ὁ περιπατῶν ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ οὐκ οἶδεν ποῦ ὑπάγει ³⁶ ἕως τὸ φῶς ἔχετε πιστεύετε εἰς τὸ φῶς ἵνα υἱοὶ φωτὸς γένησθε ταῦτα ἐλάλησεν ὁ ἰησοῦς καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἐκρύβη ἀπ᾽ αὐτῶν ³⁷ τοσαῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ σημεῖα πεποιηκότος ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν οὐκ ἐπίστευον εἰς αὐτόν ³⁸ ἵνα ὁ λόγος ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου πληρωθῇ ὃν εἶπεν κύριε τίς ἐπίστευσεν τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν καὶ ὁ βραχίων κυρίου τίνι ἀπεκαλύφθη ³⁹ διὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἠδύναντο πιστεύειν ὅτι πάλιν εἶπεν ἠσαΐας ⁴⁰ τετύφλωκεν αὐτῶν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς καὶ πεπώρωκεν αὐτῶν τὴν καρδίαν ἵνα μὴ ἴδωσιν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς καὶ νοήσωσιν τῇ καρδίᾳ καὶ ἐπιστραφῶσιν καὶ ἰάσωμαι    ¹ μὴ ταρασσέσθω ὑμῶν ἡ καρδία πιστεύετε εἰς τὸν θεόν καὶ εἰς ἐμὲ πιστεύετε ² ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ τοῦ πατρός μου μοναὶ πολλαί εἰσιν εἰ δὲ μή εἶπον ἂν ὑμῖν πορεύομαι ἑτοιμάσαι τόπον ὑμῖν ³ καὶ ἐὰν πορευθῶ καὶ ἑτοιμάσω ὑμῖν τόπον πάλιν ἔρχομαι καὶ παραλήψομαι ὑμᾶς πρὸς ἐμαυτόν ἵνα ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ καὶ ὑμεῖς ἦτε ⁴ καὶ ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω οἴδατε καὶ τὴν ὁδόν οἴδατε, ⁵ λέγει αὐτῷ θωμᾶς κύριε οὐκ οἴδαμεν ποῦ ὑπάγεις καὶ πῶς δυνάμεθα τὴν ὁδὸν εἰδέναι ⁶ λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ ἰησοῦς ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ὁδὸς καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια καὶ ἡ ζωή οὐδεὶς ἔρχεται πρὸς τὸν πατέρα εἰ μὴ δι᾽ ἐμοῦ ⁷ εἰ ἐγνώκειτέ με καὶ τὸν πατέρα μου ἐγνώκειτε ἂν καὶ ἀπ᾽ ἄρτι γινώσκετε αὐτὸν καὶ ἑωράκατε αὐτόν ⁸ λέγει αὐτῷ φίλιππος κύριε δεῖξον ἡμῖν τὸν πατέρα καὶ ἀρκεῖ ἡμῖν ⁹ λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ ἰησοῦς τοσοῦτον χρόνον μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν εἰμι καὶ οὐκ ἔγνωκάς με φίλιππε ὁ ἑωρακὼς ἐμὲ ἑώρακεν τὸν πατέρα καὶ πῶς σὺ λέγεις δεῖξον ἡμῖν τὸν πατέρα ¹⁰ οὐ πιστεύεις ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ πατρὶ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἐν ἐμοί ἐστιν τὰ ῥήματα ἃ ἐγὼ λαλῶ ὑμῖν ἀπ᾽ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐ λαλῶ, ὁ δὲ πατὴρ ὁ ἐν ἐμοὶ μένων αὐτὸς ποιεῖ τὰ ἔργα ¹¹ πιστεύετέ μοι ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ πατρὶ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἐν ἐμοί εἰ δὲ μή διὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτὰ πιστεύετε μοι ¹² ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ τὰ ἔργα ἃ ἐγὼ ποιῶ κἀκεῖνος ποιήσει καὶ μείζονα τούτων ποιήσει ὅτι ἐγὼ πρὸς τὸν πατέρα μου πορεύομαι ¹³ καὶ ὅ τι ἂν αἰτήσητε ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου τοῦτο ποιήσω ἵνα δοξασθῇ ὁ πατὴρ ἐν τῷ υἱῷ ¹⁴ ἐάν τι αἰτήσητέ ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου ἐγὼ ποιήσω ¹⁵ ἐὰν ἀγαπᾶτέ με τὰς ἐντολὰς τὰς ἐμὰς τηρήσατε ¹⁶ καὶ ἐγὼ ἐρωτήσω τὸν πατέρα καὶ ἄλλον παράκλητον δώσει ὑμῖν ἵνα μένῃ μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ¹⁷ τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας ὃ ὁ κόσμος οὐ δύναται λαβεῖν ὅτι οὐ θεωρεῖ αὐτὸ οὐδὲ γινώσκει αὐτό ὑμεῖς δὲ γινώσκετε αὐτὸ, ὅτι παρ᾽ ὑμῖν μένει καὶ ἐν ὑμῖν ἔσται ¹⁸ οὐκ ἀφήσω ὑμᾶς ὀρφανούς ἔρχομαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς ¹⁹ ἔτι μικρὸν καὶ ὁ κόσμος με οὐκ ἔτι θεωρεῖ ὑμεῖς δὲ θεωρεῖτέ με ὅτι ἐγὼ ζῶ καὶ ὑμεῖς ζήσεσθε ²⁰ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ γνώσεσθε ὑμεῖς ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ πατρί μου καὶ ὑμεῖς ἐν ἐμοὶ κἀγὼ ἐν ὑμῖν ²¹ ὁ ἔχων τὰς ἐντολάς μου καὶ τηρῶν αὐτὰς ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν ὁ ἀγαπῶν με ὁ δὲ ἀγαπῶν με ἀγαπηθήσεται ὑπὸ τοῦ πατρός μου καὶ ἐγὼ ἀγαπήσω αὐτὸν καὶ ἐμφανίσω αὐτῷ ἐμαυτόν ²² λέγει αὐτῷ ἰούδας οὐχ ὁ ἰσκαριώτης κύριε τί γέγονεν ὅτι ἡμῖν μέλλεις ἐμφανίζειν σεαυτὸν καὶ οὐχὶ τῷ κόσμῳ ²³ ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἐάν τις ἀγαπᾷ με τὸν λόγον μου τηρήσει καὶ ὁ πατήρ μου ἀγαπήσει αὐτόν καὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐλευσόμεθα καὶ μονὴν παρ᾽ αὐτῷ ποιησόμεν ²⁴ ὁ μὴ ἀγαπῶν με τοὺς λόγους μου οὐ τηρεῖ καὶ ὁ λόγος ὃν ἀκούετε οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὸς ἀλλὰ τοῦ πέμψαντός με πατρός ²⁵ ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν παρ᾽ ὑμῖν μένων ²⁶ ὁ δὲ παράκλητος τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ὃ πέμψει ὁ πατὴρ ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου ἐκεῖνος ὑμᾶς διδάξει πάντα καὶ ὑπομνήσει ὑμᾶς πάντα ἃ εἶπον ὑμῖν
