³ Car les coutumes des nations ne sont que vanité ; l'idole n'est que du bois qu'on coupe dans la forêt ; un ouvrage que la main du sculpteur façonne avec la hache. ⁴ On le décore avec l'argent et l'or ; on le fixe avec des clous à coups de marteau pour qu'il ne branle pas. ⁵ Ces dieux-là sont comme une colonne faite au tour ; il faut qu'on les porte, parce qu'ils ne marchent pas, ne les craignez point : ils ne font pas de mal ; ils ne peuvent pas davantage faire du bien.

³ For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. ⁴ They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. ⁵ They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
