Js 17:14-18 (King James)

   ¹⁴ And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as the LORD hath blessed me hitherto? ¹⁵ And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee. ¹⁶ And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are of Bethshean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel. ¹⁷ And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot only: ¹⁸ But the mountain shall be thine; for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the outgoings of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong.

¹⁴ Les descendants de Joseph dirent à Josué: «Pourquoi nous as-tu donné en héritage un seul lot, une seule part, alors que nous formons un peuple nombreux et que l'Eternel nous a bénis jusqu'à présent?» ¹⁵ Josué leur dit: «Si vous êtes un peuple nombreux, montez à la forêt et défrichez-la pour vous y faire de la place dans le pays des Phéréziens et des Rephaïm, puisque la région montagneuse d'Ephraïm est trop exiguë pour vous.» ¹⁶ Les fils de Joseph dirent: «La montagne ne nous suffira pas et il y a des chars en fer chez tous les Cananéens qui habitent la vallée, aussi bien chez ceux qui sont à Beth-Shean et dans les villes qui en dépendent que chez ceux qui se trouvent dans la vallée de Jizreel.» ¹⁷ Josué dit à la famille de Joseph, à Ephraïm et à Manassé: «Vous êtes un peuple nombreux et doté d'une grande force. Vous n'aurez donc pas un lot unique. ¹⁸ Mais vous aurez une région montagneuse. Certes, c'est une forêt, mais vous la défricherez et elle sera à vous jusque dans ses extrémités car vous chasserez les Cananéens, malgré leurs chars en fer et malgré leur force.»
