Js 9-11 (King James)

   ¹ And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof; ² That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
   ³ And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai, ⁴ They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; ⁵ And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. ⁶ And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us. ⁷ And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you? ⁸ And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye? ⁹ And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, ¹⁰ And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth. ¹¹ Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us. ¹² This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy: ¹³ And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey. ¹⁴ And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.
   ¹⁵ And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them. ¹⁶ And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them. ¹⁷ And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim. ¹⁸ And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes. ¹⁹ But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them. ²⁰ This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them. ²¹ And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.
   ²² And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us? ²³ Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God. ²⁴ And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing. ²⁵ And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do. ²⁶ And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not. ²⁷ And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

   ¹ Now it came to pass, when Adonizedec king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them; ² That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty. ³ Wherefore Adonizedec king of Jerusalem, sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying, ⁴ Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel. ⁵ Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it. ⁶ And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.
   ⁷ So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour. ⁸ And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee. ⁹ Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night. ¹⁰ And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah. ¹¹ And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword. ¹² Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. ¹³ And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. ¹⁴ And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.
   ¹⁵ And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal. ¹⁶ But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah. ¹⁷ And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah. ¹⁸ And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them: ¹⁹ And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the LORD your God hath delivered them into your hand. ²⁰ And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities. ²¹ And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel. ²² Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave. ²³ And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. ²⁴ And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them. ²⁵ And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight. ²⁶ And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening. ²⁷ And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave's mouth, which remain until this very day.
   ²⁸ And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho. ²⁹ Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah: ³⁰ And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho. ³¹ And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it: ³² And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah. ³³ Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining. ³⁴ And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it: ³⁵ And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish. ³⁶ And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it: ³⁷ And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein. ³⁸ And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it: ³⁹ And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king. ⁴⁰ So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded. ⁴¹ And Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon. ⁴² And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel. ⁴³ And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

   ¹ And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, ² And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west, ³ And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh. ⁴ And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many. ⁵ And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel. ⁶ And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire. ⁷ So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them. ⁸ And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephothmaim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining. ⁹ And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him: he houghed their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.
   ¹⁰ And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms. ¹¹ And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire. ¹² And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded. ¹³ But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn. ¹⁴ And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.
   ¹⁵ As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses. ¹⁶ So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same; ¹⁷ Even from the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and slew them. ¹⁸ Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. ¹⁹ There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle. ²⁰ For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses. ²¹ And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities. ²² There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained. ²³ So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.

Ruse des Gabaonites

¹ A la nouvelle de ces événements, tous les rois qui se trouvaient à l'ouest du Jourdain, dans la montagne et dans la vallée et sur toute la côte de la mer Méditerranée jusque près du Liban, les Hittites, les Amoréens, les Cananéens, les Phéréziens, les Héviens et les Jébusiens ² s'unirent d'un commun accord pour combattre ensemble contre Josué et contre Israël.
³ Les habitants de Gabaon, de leur côté, lorsqu'ils apprirent de quelle manière Josué avait traité Jéricho et Aï, ⁴ eurent recours à la ruse. Ils se mirent en route avec des provisions de voyage. Ils prirent de vieux sacs pour leurs ânes, ainsi que de vieilles outres à vin déchirées et recousues. ⁵ Ils portaient à leurs pieds de vieilles sandales raccommodées, et sur eux de vieux vêtements. Et tout le pain qu'ils avaient pour nourriture était sec et en miettes. ⁶ Ils allèrent trouver Josué au camp de Guilgal et lui dirent, ainsi qu'à tous ceux d'Israël: «Nous venons d'un pays éloigné. Faites maintenant alliance avec nous.»
⁷ Les hommes d'Israël répondirent à ces Héviens: «Peut-être habitez-vous sur notre territoire. Comment ferions-nous alors alliance avec vous?» ⁸ Ils dirent à Josué: «Nous sommes tes serviteurs.»
Josué leur demanda: «Qui êtes-vous et d'où venez-vous?» ⁹ Ils lui répondirent: «Tes serviteurs viennent d'un pays très éloigné, à cause de la renommée de l'Eternel, ton Dieu. En effet, nous avons entendu parler de lui, de tout ce qu'il a fait en Egypte ¹⁰ et de la manière dont il a traité les deux rois des Amoréens de l'autre côté du Jourdain: Sihon, roi de Hesbon, et Og, roi du Basan, qui vivait à Ashtaroth. ¹¹ Nos anciens et tous les habitants de notre pays nous ont dit: ‘Prenez avec vous des provisions pour le voyage, allez à leur rencontre et dites-leur: Nous sommes vos serviteurs. Faites maintenant alliance avec nous.' ¹² Voici notre pain: il était encore chaud quand nous en avons fait provision dans nos maisons, le jour où nous sommes partis pour venir vers vous, et maintenant il est tout sec et en miettes. ¹³ Ces outres à vin, que nous avons remplies toutes neuves, les voilà déchirées. Nos vêtements et nos sandales se sont usés à cause de la très grande longueur du trajet.»
¹⁴ Les hommes d'Israël acceptèrent les provisions des Gabaonites et ne consultèrent pas l'Eternel. ¹⁵ Josué fit la paix avec eux et conclut une alliance par laquelle il devait leur laisser la vie, et les chefs de l'assemblée leur en firent le serment.
¹⁶ Trois jours après la conclusion de cette alliance, ils apprirent que ces hommes étaient leurs voisins et habitaient sur leur territoire. ¹⁷ En effet, les Israélites partirent de leur camp et parvinrent vers leurs villes le troisième jour; il s'agissait de Gabaon, Kephira, Beéroth et Kirjath-Jearim.
¹⁸ Ils ne tuèrent pas les Gabaonites parce que les chefs de l'assemblée leur avaient juré par l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, de leur laisser la vie, mais toute l'assemblée murmura contre les chefs. ¹⁹ Tous les chefs dirent à toute l'assemblée: «Nous leur avons prêté serment au nom de l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, et maintenant nous ne pouvons pas les toucher. ²⁰ Voici comment nous les traiterons: nous leur laisserons la vie, afin de ne pas attirer sur nous la colère de l'Eternel à cause du serment que nous leur avons fait.» ²¹ «Ils vivront», leur dirent les chefs, mais ils furent employés à couper le bois et à puiser l'eau pour toute l'assemblée, comme les chefs le leur avaient dit.
²² Josué fit appeler les Gabaonites et leur dit: «Pourquoi nous avez-vous trompés en disant: ‘Nous sommes très éloignés de vous' alors que vous habitez sur notre territoire? ²³ Maintenant vous êtes maudits et vous ne cesserez pas d'être dans l'esclavage, de couper du bois et de puiser de l'eau pour la maison de mon Dieu.» ²⁴ Ils répondirent à Josué: «On avait rapporté à tes serviteurs les ordres de l'Eternel, ton Dieu, à Moïse, son serviteur. Il y était question de vous livrer tout le pays et de détruire devant vous tous ses habitants, et votre présence nous a inspiré une grande peur pour notre vie. Voilà pourquoi nous avons agi de cette façon. ²⁵ Et maintenant, nous voici entre tes mains. Traite-nous comme tu trouveras bon et juste de le faire.»
²⁶ Josué agit envers eux comme il avait été décidé: il les délivra des Israélites, qui ne les firent pas mourir, ²⁷ mais il les destina dès ce jour à couper du bois et à puiser de l'eau pour l'assemblée et pour l'autel de l'Eternel à l'endroit que l'Eternel choisirait. C'est ce qu'ils font encore aujourd'hui.

Josué 10

Conquêtes dans le centre et au sud

¹ Adoni-Tsédek, le roi de Jérusalem, apprit que Josué s'était emparé d'Aï et l'avait vouée à la destruction, qu'il avait traité Aï et son roi comme il avait traité Jéricho et son roi et que les habitants de Gabaon avaient fait la paix avec Israël et vivaient au milieu d'eux. ² Il éprouva alors une forte peur, car Gabaon était une grande ville, comme une des villes royales, plus grande même qu'Aï, et tous ses hommes étaient vaillants. ³ Adoni-Tsédek, roi de Jérusalem, fit dire à Hoham, roi d'Hébron, à Piream, roi de Jarmuth, à Japhia, roi de Lakis, et à Debir, roi d'Eglon: ⁴ «Montez vers moi et aidez-moi à détruire Gabaon, car elle a fait la paix avec Josué et avec les Israélites.» ⁵ Cinq rois amoréens – les rois de Jérusalem, d'Hébron, de Jarmuth, de Lakis et d'Eglon – s'allièrent ainsi et montèrent avec toutes leurs troupes. Ils vinrent installer leur camp près de Gabaon et l'attaquèrent.
⁶ Les habitants de Gabaon envoyèrent dire à Josué, au camp de Guilgal: «N'abandonne pas tes serviteurs, monte vite vers nous pour nous sauver et nous secourir, car tous les rois des Amoréens qui habitent la montagne se sont ligués contre nous.»
⁷ Josué monta de Guilgal avec tous les hommes de guerre et tous les vaillants hommes. ⁸ L'Eternel dit à Josué: «N'aie pas peur de ces rois, car je les livre entre tes mains et aucun d'eux ne te résistera.» ⁹ Josué arriva sur eux par surprise après avoir marché toute la nuit depuis Guilgal. ¹⁰ L'Eternel les mit en déroute devant Israël et Israël leur infligea une grande défaite près de Gabaon, les poursuivit sur le chemin qui monte à Beth-Horon et leur porta des coups jusqu'à Azéka et Makkéda. ¹¹ Alors que les Amoréens fuyaient devant Israël et qu'ils se trouvaient sur la descente de Beth-Horon, l'Eternel fit tomber du ciel sur eux d'énormes grêlons jusqu'à Azéka et ils moururent. Ceux qui furent tués par ces grêlons furent plus nombreux que ceux qui moururent sous les coups d'épée des Israélites.
¹² Alors Josué parla à l'Eternel, le jour où l'Eternel livra les Amoréens aux Israélites, et il dit devant Israël: «Soleil, arrête-toi sur Gabaon et toi, lune, sur la vallée d'Ajalon!» ¹³ Le soleil s'arrêta et la lune suspendit sa course jusqu'à ce que la nation se soit vengée de ses ennemis. Cela n'est-il pas écrit dans le livre du Juste? «Le soleil s'arrêta au milieu du ciel et ne s'empressa pas de se coucher, durant presque tout un jour.»
¹⁴ Il n'y a pas eu de jour comme celui-là, ni avant ni après, où l'Eternel ait écouté la voix d'un homme, car l'Eternel combattait pour Israël. ¹⁵ Josué, et tout Israël avec lui, retourna au camp à Guilgal.
¹⁶ Les cinq rois s'enfuirent et se cachèrent dans une grotte à Makkéda. ¹⁷ On annonça à Josué: «Les cinq rois se trouvent cachés dans une grotte à Makkéda.» ¹⁸ Josué dit: «Roulez de grosses pierres à l'entrée de la grotte et mettez-y des hommes pour les garder. ¹⁹ Quant à vous, ne vous arrêtez pas, poursuivez vos ennemis et attaquez-les par-derrière. Ne les laissez pas entrer dans leurs villes, car l'Eternel, votre Dieu, les a livrés entre vos mains.»
²⁰ Après que Josué et les Israélites leur eurent infligé une très grande défaite et les eurent complètement battus, ceux qui purent leur échapper se sauvèrent dans les villes fortifiées. ²¹ Tout le peuple revint tranquillement au camp vers Josué à Makkéda, sans que personne n'ose dire quoi que ce soit contre les Israélites.
²² Josué dit alors: «Ouvrez l'entrée de la grotte, faites-en sortir ces cinq rois et amenez-les-moi.» ²³ C'est ce qu'on fit, et on lui amena les cinq rois qu'on avait fait sortir de la grotte; c'étaient les rois de Jérusalem, d'Hébron, de Jarmuth, de Lakis et d'Eglon. ²⁴ Lorsqu'on eut amené ces rois devant lui, Josué appela tous les hommes d'Israël et dit aux chefs des hommes de guerre qui avaient marché avec lui: «Approchez-vous, mettez votre pied sur le cou de ces rois.» Ils s'approchèrent et mirent le pied sur leur cou. ²⁵ Josué leur dit: «N'ayez pas peur et ne vous laissez pas effrayer, fortifiez-vous et ayez du courage, car c'est ainsi que l'Eternel traitera tous vos ennemis contre lesquels vous combattez.» ²⁶ Après cela, Josué les frappa à mort. Il les pendit à cinq arbres et ils y restèrent pendus jusqu'au soir. ²⁷ Vers le coucher du soleil, Josué ordonna qu'on les descende des arbres. On les jeta dans la grotte où ils s'étaient cachés et l'on en boucha l'entrée avec de grosses pierres qui y sont restées jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
²⁸ Josué s'empara de Makkéda le même jour et la frappa du tranchant de l'épée. Il voua à la destruction le roi, la ville et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Il ne laissa aucun survivant et il traita le roi de Makkéda comme il avait traité le roi de Jéricho.
²⁹ Josué passa avec tout Israël de Makkéda à Libna et attaqua Libna. ³⁰ L'Eternel la livra aussi, avec son roi, entre les mains d'Israël, et il la frappa du tranchant de l'épée, elle et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Il ne laissa aucun survivant et il traita son roi comme il avait traité le roi de Jéricho.
³¹ Josué passa avec tout Israël de Libna à Lakis. Il installa son camp devant elle et l'attaqua. ³² L'Eternel livra Lakis entre les mains d'Israël, qui la prit le deuxième jour et la frappa du tranchant de l'épée, elle et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient, comme il avait traité Libna.
³³ Alors Horam, le roi de Guézer, monta pour secourir Lakis. Josué les battit, lui et son peuple, sans laisser un seul survivant.
³⁴ Josué passa avec tout Israël de Lakis à Eglon. Ils installèrent leur camp devant elle et l'attaquèrent. ³⁵ Ils s'en emparèrent le même jour et la frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, elle et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Josué la voua à la destruction le jour même, comme il avait traité Lakis.
³⁶ Josué monta avec tout Israël d'Eglon à Hébron et ils l'attaquèrent. ³⁷ Ils s'en emparèrent et la frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée, elle, son roi, toutes les villes qui en dépendaient et tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Josué ne laissa aucun survivant, comme il l'avait fait à Eglon, et il la voua à la destruction avec tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient.
³⁸ Josué se dirigea avec tout Israël sur Debir et l'attaqua. ³⁹ Il s'empara d'elle, de son roi et de toutes les villes qui en dépendaient. Ils les frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée et vouèrent à la destruction tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient, sans laisser un seul survivant. Josué traita Debir et son roi comme il avait traité Hébron et comme il avait traité Libna et son roi.
⁴⁰ Josué conquit tout le pays, la montagne, le Néguev, la vallée et les coteaux, et il en battit tous les rois. Il ne laissa aucun survivant et il extermina tout ce qui respirait, comme l'avait ordonné l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël. ⁴¹ Josué les battit de Kadès-Barnéa à Gaza, il conquit toute la région de Gosen jusqu'à Gabaon. ⁴² Josué s'empara en même temps de tous ces rois et de leur pays, car l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, combattait pour Israël. ⁴³ Puis Josué retourna avec tout Israël au camp à Guilgal.

Josué 11

Conquêtes dans le nord

¹ A la nouvelle de ces événements, Jabin, le roi de Hatsor, envoya des messagers à Jobab, le roi de Madon, au roi de Shimron, au roi d'Acshaph, ² aux rois qui se trouvaient au nord dans la montagne, dans la plaine au sud de Génésareth, dans la vallée et sur les hauteurs de Dor à l'ouest. ³ Il en envoya aussi aux Cananéens de l'est et de l'ouest, aux Amoréens, aux Hittites, aux Phéréziens, aux Jébusiens dans la montagne et aux Héviens au pied de l'Hermon dans le pays de Mitspa. ⁴ Ils sortirent avec toutes leurs troupes. Ils formaient un peuple innombrable, comme le sable qui est au bord de la mer, et avaient des chevaux et des chars en très grande quantité. ⁵ Tous ces rois fixèrent un rendez-vous et vinrent ensemble installer leur camp près des eaux de Mérom, pour combattre contre Israël.
⁶ L'Eternel dit à Josué: «N'aie pas peur d'eux, car demain, à ce moment-ci, je les livrerai tous, blessés à mort, à Israël. Tu mutileras les jarrets de leurs chevaux et tu brûleras leurs chars.» ⁷ Josué arriva par surprise sur eux avec tous ses hommes de guerre près des eaux de Mérom, et ils se précipitèrent au milieu d'eux. ⁸ L'Eternel les livra entre les mains d'Israël. Ils les battirent et les poursuivirent jusqu'à Sidon la grande, jusqu'à Misrephoth-Maïm et jusqu'à la vallée de Mitspa vers l'est. Ils les battirent sans laisser un seul survivant. ⁹ Josué les traita comme l'Eternel le lui avait dit: il mutila les jarrets de leurs chevaux et brûla leurs chars.
¹⁰ A la même époque, sur le chemin du retour, Josué s'empara de Hatsor et frappa son roi avec l'épée. Hatsor était autrefois la principale ville de tous ces royaumes. ¹¹ On frappa du tranchant de l'épée et l'on extermina tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Il ne resta rien de ce qui respirait et l'on mit le feu à Hatsor.
¹² Josué s'empara aussi de toutes les villes de ces rois et de tous leurs rois. Il les frappa du tranchant de l'épée et les voua à la destruction, comme l'avait ordonné Moïse, le serviteur de l'Eternel. ¹³ Toutefois, Israël ne brûla aucune des villes situées sur des collines, à l'exception seulement de Hatsor, qui fut brûlée par Josué. ¹⁴ Les Israélites gardèrent pour eux tout le butin de ces villes et le bétail, mais ils frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée tous les hommes jusqu'à leur complète extermination, sans rien laisser de ce qui respirait. ¹⁵ Josué se conforma aux ordres donnés par l'Eternel à son serviteur Moïse et par ce dernier à lui-même. Il ne négligea rien de tout ce que l'Eternel avait ordonné à Moïse.
¹⁶ C'est ainsi que Josué s'empara de tout ce pays, de la montagne, de tout le Néguev, de toute la région de Gosen, de la vallée, de la plaine, de la montagne d'Israël et de ses vallées, ¹⁷ depuis la montagne pelée qui s'élève vers Séir jusqu'à Baal-Gad, dans la vallée du Liban, au pied du mont Hermon. Il s'empara de tous leurs rois, les frappa et les fit mourir. ¹⁸ La guerre que Josué mena contre tous ces rois fut de longue durée. ¹⁹ Aucune ville ne fit la paix avec les Israélites, à l'exception de Gabaon, qui était habitée par les Héviens. Ils les prirent toutes en combattant. ²⁰ En effet, l'Eternel permit que ces peuples s'obstinent à faire la guerre contre Israël afin qu'Israël les extermine sans leur faire grâce et qu'il les détruise comme il l'avait lui-même ordonné à Moïse.
²¹ A la même époque, Josué alla exterminer les Anakim des montagnes d'Hébron, de Debir, d'Anab, de toutes les régions montagneuses de Juda et d'Israël. Josué les voua à la destruction, avec leurs villes. ²² Il ne resta pas d'Anakim dans le pays des Israélites. Il n'en resta qu'à Gaza, à Gath et à Asdod.
²³ Josué s'empara donc de tout le pays, conformément à tout ce que l'Eternel avait dit à Moïse, et le donna en héritage à Israël, à chacun sa portion, d'après leurs tribus. Puis le pays fut en paix, sans guerre.
