²³ Ce jour-là, des Sadducéens, qui nient la résurrection, vinrent à lui et lui posèrent cette question : ²⁴ "Maître, Moïse a dit : Si quelqu'un meurt sans avoir d'enfants, son frère épousera sa femme et suscitera une postérité à son frère. ²⁵ Or, il y avait parmi nous sept frères. Le premier se maria et mourut, et comme il n'avait pas de postérité, il laissa sa femme à son frère. ²⁶ Pareillement, le second, puis le troisième, jusqu'au septième. ²⁷ Après eux tous, la femme mourut. ²⁸ A la résurrection donc, duquel des sept sera-t-elle femme ? Car tous l'on eue." ²⁹ Jésus leur répondit : "vous êtes dans l'erreur, ne comprenant ni les Écritures, ni la puissance de Dieu. ³⁰ Car, à la résurrection, on n'épouse pas et on n'est pas épousé ; mais on est comme des anges de Dieu dans le ciel. ³¹ Quant à la résurrection des morts, n'avez-vous pas lu ce que Dieu vous a dit, en ces termes : ³² Je suis le Dieu d'Abraham, le Dieu d'Isaac et le Dieu de Jacob ? Dieu n'est pas Dieu des morts, mais des vivants." ³³ Et les foules, en entendant cela, étaient remplies d'admiration pour son enseignement.

   ²³ The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him, ²⁴ Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. ²⁵ Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: ²⁶ Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. ²⁷ And last of all the woman died also. ²⁸ Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her. ²⁹ Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. ³⁰ For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. ³¹ But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, ³² I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. ³³ And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.

   ²³ In illo die accesserunt ad eum sadducæi, qui dicunt non esse resurrectionem : et interrogaverunt eum,
   ²⁴ dicentes : Magister, Moyses dixit : Si quis mortuus fuerit non habens filium, ut ducat frater ejus uxorem illius, et suscitet semen fratri suo.
   ²⁵ Erant autem apud nos septem fratres : et primus, uxore ducta, defunctus est : et non habens semen, reliquit uxorem suam fratri suo.
   ²⁶ Similiter secundus, et tertius usque ad septimum.
   ²⁷ Novissime autem omnium et mulier defuncta est.
   ²⁸ In resurrectione ergo cujus erit de septem uxor ? omnes enim habuerunt eam.

   ³⁰ In resurrectione enim neque nubent, neque nubentur : sed erunt sicut angeli Dei in cælo.

   ³² Ego sum Deus Abraham, et Deus Isaac, et Deus Jacob ? Non est Deus mortuorum, sed viventium.
