¹ Éphraïm m'a environné de mensonge, et la maison d'Israël de tromperie ; Juda aussi est sans frein vis-à-vis de Dieu, et vis-à-vis du Saint, qui est fidèle. ² Éphraïm se repaît de vent, et il court après le vent d'orient. Tout le jour il accumule le mensonge et la violence ; ils concluent alliance avec Assur, et l'huile est transportée en Égypte. ³ Yahweh a aussi procès avec Juda ; il va châtier Jacob selon ses voies, il lui rendra selon ses oeuvres. ⁴ Dans le sein de sa mère, Jacob supplanta son frère, et dans sa vigueur il lutta avec Dieu. ⁵ Il lutta avec l'ange et il eut le dessus ; il pleura et lui demanda grâce ; il le trouva ensuite à Béthel, et là Dieu a parlé avec nous. ⁶ Or Yahweh est le Dieu des armées, son nom est Yahweh.

   ¹ Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt. ² The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him. ³ He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God: ⁴ Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spake with us; ⁵ Even the LORD God of hosts; the LORD is his memorial. ⁶ Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment and wait on thy God continually.
