   ¹ My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. ² Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. ³ Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart. ⁴ Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman: ⁵ That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.
   ⁶ For at the window of my house I looked through my casement, ⁷ And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding, ⁸ Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house, ⁹ In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night: ¹⁰ And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart. ¹¹ (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: ¹² Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.) ¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him, ¹⁴ I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows. ¹⁵ Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. ¹⁶ I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. ¹⁷ I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. ¹⁸ Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. ¹⁹ For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey: ²⁰ He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed. ²¹ With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him. ²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; ²³ Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.
   ²⁴ Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. ²⁵ Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. ²⁶ For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. ²⁷ Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

Proverbes 8

   ¹ Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice? ² She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths. ³ She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors. ⁴ Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man. ⁵ O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart. ⁶ Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things. ⁷ For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. ⁸ All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them. ⁹ They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge. ¹⁰ Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. ¹¹ For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
   ¹² I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions. ¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. ¹⁴ Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength. ¹⁵ By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. ¹⁶ By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth. ¹⁷ I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me. ¹⁸ Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness. ¹⁹ My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver. ²⁰ I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment: ²¹ That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
   ²² The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. ²³ I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. ²⁴ When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. ²⁵ Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: ²⁶ While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. ²⁷ When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: ²⁸ When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: ²⁹ When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: ³⁰ Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; ³¹ Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
   ³² Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. ³³ Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. ³⁴ Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. ³⁵ For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. ³⁶ But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Proverbes 9

   ¹ Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars: ² She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table. ³ She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city, ⁴ Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, ⁵ Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled. ⁶ Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding. ⁷ He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot. ⁸ Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. ⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. ¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. ¹¹ For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. ¹² If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
   ¹³ A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing. ¹⁴ For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city, ¹⁵ To call passengers who go right on their ways: ¹⁶ Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, ¹⁷ Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. ¹⁸ But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

La femme débauchée

¹ Mon fils, retiens mes paroles
et garde mes commandements avec toi!
² Retiens mes commandements et tu vivras.
Garde mon enseignement comme la prunelle de tes yeux!
³ Attache-les sur tes doigts,
écris-les sur la table de ton cœur!
⁴ Dis à la sagesse: «Tu es ma sœur»
et appelle l'intelligence ton amie
⁵ pour qu'elles te préservent de la femme étrangère,
de l'inconnue au discours flatteur.
⁶ Alors que j'étais à la fenêtre de ma maison
et que je regardais à travers mon treillis,
⁷ j'ai vu parmi ceux qui manquent d'expérience,
j'ai remarqué parmi les jeunes gens, un garçon dépourvu de bon sens.
⁸ Il passait dans la rue, près de l'angle où se tenait une de ces femmes,
et il prenait le chemin de sa maison;
⁹ c'était au crépuscule, en fin de journée,
au moment où viennent la nuit et l'obscurité.
¹⁰ La femme est venue à sa rencontre,
habillée comme une prostituée, la ruse dans le cœur.
¹¹ Elle était bruyante et sans pudeur.
Ses pieds ne tenaient pas en place chez elle:
¹² tantôt dans la rue, tantôt sur les places,
à tous les carrefours elle était aux aguets.
¹³ Elle l'a agrippé et embrassé
et, d'un air effronté, lui a dit:
¹⁴ «Je devais un sacrifice de communion,
aujourd'hui j'ai accompli mes vœux.
¹⁵ Voilà pourquoi je suis sortie à ta rencontre
pour te chercher, et je t'ai trouvé.
¹⁶ J'ai orné mon divan de couvertures,
de tissus en lin d'Egypte.
¹⁷ J'ai parfumé mon lit
de myrrhe, d'aloès et de cinnamome.
¹⁸ Viens, enivrons-nous d'amour jusqu'au matin,
livrons-nous aux jouissances de la passion!
¹⁹ En effet, mon mari n'est pas à la maison,
il est parti pour un voyage lointain;
²⁰ il a pris la bourse avec lui,
il ne reviendra à la maison qu'à la pleine lune.»
²¹ Elle l'a attiré à force de persuasion,
elle l'a séduit par la flatterie de ses lèvres.
²² Il s'est tout à coup mis à la suivre,
pareil au bœuf qui va à la boucherie,
au fou qu'on attache pour le corriger,
²³ jusqu'à ce qu'une flèche lui transperce le foie.
Il était pareil à l'oiseau qui se précipite dans un piège
sans savoir que c'est au prix de sa vie.
²⁴ Et maintenant, mes fils, écoutez-moi
et soyez attentifs aux paroles de ma bouche!
²⁵ Que ton cœur ne se tourne pas vers les voies d'une telle femme!
Ne t'égare pas dans ses sentiers!
²⁶ En effet, elle a fait beaucoup de victimes.
Ils sont nombreux, tous ceux qu'elle a détruits.
²⁷ Sa maison, c'est le chemin du séjour des morts
qui descend vers les chambres de la mort.

Proverbes 8

L'activité de la sagesse

¹ La sagesse ne crie-t-elle pas?
L'intelligence ne parle-t-elle pas tout haut?
² C'est au sommet des hauteurs dominant la route,
c'est à la croisée des chemins qu'elle se place.
³ A côté des portes, à l'entrée de la ville,
à l'intérieur des portes, elle crie:
⁴ «Hommes, c'est vous que j'appelle,
et ma voix s'adresse aux êtres humains.
⁵ Vous qui manquez d'expérience, apprenez le discernement!
Vous qui êtes stupides, apprenez le bon sens!
⁶ Ecoutez, car ce que je dis est capital
et j'ouvre mes lèvres avec droiture.
⁷ Oui, c'est la vérité que ma bouche proclame
et mes lèvres ont horreur de la méchanceté.
⁸ Toutes les paroles de ma bouche sont justes,
elles ne contiennent rien qui soit faux ou perverti.
⁹ Toutes sont exactes pour celui qui est intelligent,
et droites pour ceux qui ont trouvé la connaissance.
¹⁰ Préférez mes instructions à l'argent,
et la connaissance à l'or le plus précieux!
¹¹ En effet, la sagesse vaut mieux que les perles,
elle a plus de valeur que tout ce qu'on pourrait désirer.
¹² »Moi, la sagesse, j'habite le discernement
et je possède l'art de la réflexion.
¹³ Craindre l'Eternel, c'est détester le mal.
L'arrogance, l'orgueil, la voie du mal
et la bouche perverse, voilà ce que je déteste.
¹⁴ »C'est à moi qu'appartiennent le conseil et le succès.
Je suis l'intelligence, la puissance m'appartient.
¹⁵ Par moi les rois règnent
et les dirigeants ordonnent ce qui est juste,
¹⁶ par moi gouvernent les chefs,
les grands, tous les juges de la terre.
¹⁷ »J'aime ceux qui m'aiment,
et ceux qui me cherchent me trouvent.
¹⁸ Avec moi sont la richesse et la gloire,
les valeurs élevées et la justice.
¹⁹ Mon fruit est meilleur que l'or, que l'or pur,
et le profit qu'on tire de moi est préférable à l'argent.
²⁰ Je marche sur le chemin de la justice,
au milieu des sentiers du droit,
²¹ pour donner des biens en héritage à ceux qui m'aiment
et pour remplir leurs trésors.
²² »L'Eternel me possédait au commencement de son activité,
avant ses œuvres les plus anciennes.
²³ J'ai été établie depuis l'éternité,
dès le début, avant même que la terre existe.
²⁴ »J'ai été mise au monde quand il n'y avait pas de mer,
pas de source chargée d'eau.
²⁵ Avant que les montagnes ne soient formées,
avant que les collines n'existent, j'ai été mise au monde.
²⁶ Il n'avait encore fait ni la terre, ni les campagnes,
ni le premier grain de poussière du monde.
²⁷ »Lorsqu'il a disposé le ciel, j'étais là;
lorsqu'il a tracé un cercle à la surface de l'abîme,
²⁸ lorsqu'il a placé les nuages en haut
et que les sources de l'abîme ont jailli avec force,
²⁹ lorsqu'il a fixé une limite à la mer
pour que l'eau n'en franchisse pas les bords,
lorsqu'il a tracé les fondations de la terre,
³⁰ j'étais à l'œuvre à ses côtés.
Je faisais tous les jours son plaisir,
jouant constamment devant lui,
³¹ jouant dans le monde, sur sa terre,
et trouvant mon plaisir parmi les hommes.
³² »Et maintenant, mes fils, écoutez-moi!
Heureux ceux qui persévèrent dans mes voies!
³³ Ecoutez l'instruction pour devenir sages,
ne la négligez pas!
³⁴ Heureux l'homme qui m'écoute,
qui veille chaque jour sur mes portes
et qui garde l'entrée de ma maison!
³⁵ »En effet, celui qui me trouve a trouvé la vie,
il a obtenu la faveur de l'Eternel.
³⁶ En revanche, celui qui pèche contre moi se fait du tort à lui-même.
Tous ceux qui me détestent aiment la mort.»

Proverbes 9

La sagesse et la folie

¹ La sagesse a construit sa maison,
elle a taillé ses sept colonnes.
² Elle a abattu son bétail, mélangé son vin
et dressé sa table.
³ Elle a envoyé ses servantes, elle crie
sur le sommet des hauteurs de la ville:
⁴ «Qui manque d'expérience? Qu'il entre ici!»
Elle dit à ceux qui sont dépourvus de bon sens:
⁵ «Venez manger de mon pain
et boire du vin que j'ai mélangé!
⁶ Abandonnez la naïveté et vous vivrez,
avancez sur la voie de l'intelligence!
⁷ »Celui qui instruit le moqueur récolte le mépris,
et celui qui reprend le méchant s'attire ses insultes.
⁸ Ne reprends pas le moqueur si tu ne veux pas qu'il te déteste,
mais reprends le sage et il t'aimera.
⁹ Donne au sage et il deviendra encore plus sage,
enseigne le juste et il augmentera son savoir.
¹⁰ »Le commencement de la sagesse, c'est la crainte de l'Eternel.
La connaissance du Dieu saint, voilà en quoi consiste l'intelligence.
¹¹ Oui, c'est grâce à moi que tes jours se multiplieront
et que les années de ta vie augmenteront.
¹² Si tu es sage, tu l'es pour toi;
si tu es moqueur, tu en supporteras les conséquences tout seul.»
¹³ La folie est une femme bruyante,
naïve, qui ne sait rien.
¹⁴ Elle s'assied à l'entrée de sa maison,
sur un siège, dans les hauteurs de la ville,
¹⁵ pour interpeller les passants
qui vont droit leur chemin:
¹⁶ «Qui manque d'expérience? Qu'il entre ici!»
Elle dit à celui qui est dépourvu de bon sens:
¹⁷ «L'eau volée est douce
et le pain mangé en cachette est agréable.»
¹⁸ Et il ne sait pas que là se trouvent les défunts,
que ceux qu'elle a invités sont dans les vallées du séjour des morts.
