   ⁵ And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh. ⁶ And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly. ⁷ And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent. ⁸ And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. ⁹ And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad. ¹⁰ Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you. ¹¹ And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

   ⁵ Et voici, Saül revenait des champs derrière ses boeufs, et il dit: Qu'a donc le peuple pour pleurer ainsi? Et on lui raconta ce qu'avaient dit ceux de Jabès. ⁶ Or, l'Esprit de Dieu saisit Saül, quand il entendit ces paroles, et il entra dans une grande colère; ⁷ Et il prit une couple de boeufs, et les coupa en morceaux, qu'il envoya dans tout le territoire d'Israël, par les messagers, en disant: On traitera de même les boeufs de ceux qui ne sortiront point à la suite de Saül et de Samuel. Et la frayeur de l'Éternel saisit le peuple, et ils sortirent comme un seul homme. ⁸ Et il en fit la revue à Bézek; et il y avait trois cent mille hommes des enfants d'Israël, et trente mille des hommes de Juda. ⁹ Puis, ils dirent aux messagers qui étaient venus: Vous parlerez ainsi aux gens de Jabès de Galaad: Vous serez délivrés demain, quand le soleil sera dans sa force. Alors les messagers revinrent, et rapportèrent cela à ceux de Jabès, qui s'en réjouirent. ¹⁰ Et les gens de Jabès dirent aux Ammonites: Demain nous nous rendrons à vous, et vous nous ferez tout ce qui vous semblera bon. ¹¹ Mais, le lendemain, Saül mit le peuple en trois bandes, et ils pénétrèrent dans le camp sur la veille du matin, et ils battirent les Ammonites jusqu'à la chaleur du jour; et ceux qui restèrent furent tellement dispersés, qu'il n'en demeura pas d'entre eux deux ensemble.

   ⁵ Et ecce Saul veniebat, sequens boves de agro, et ait : Quid habet populus quod plorat ? Et narraverunt ei verba virorum Jabes.
   ⁶ Et insilivit spiritus Domini in Saul cum audisset verba hæc, et iratus est furor ejus nimis.
   ⁷ Et assumens utrumque bovem, concidit in frusta, misitque in omnes terminos Israël per manum nuntiorum, dicens : Quicumque non exierit, et secutus fuerit Saul et Samuel, sic fiet bobus ejus. Invasit ergo timor Domini populum, et egressi sunt quasi vir unus.
   ⁸ Et recensuit eos in Bezech : fueruntque filiorum Israël trecenta millia, virorum autem Juda triginta millia.
   ⁹ Et dixerunt nuntiis qui venerant : Sic dicetis viris qui sunt in Jabes Galaad : Cras erit vobis salus, cum incaluerit sol. Venerunt ergo nuntii, et annuntiaverunt viris Jabes : qui lætati sunt.
   ¹⁰ Et dixerunt : Mane exibimus ad vos : et facietis nobis omne quod placuerit vobis.
   ¹¹ Et factum est, cum dies crastinus venisset, constituit Saul populum in tres partes : et ingressus est media castra in vigilia matutina, et percussit Ammon usque dum incalesceret dies : reliqui autem dispersi sunt, ita ut non relinquerentur in eis duo pariter.
