¹ David monta de là et s'établit dans les lieux forts d'Engaddi. ² Lorsque Saül fut revenu de la poursuite des Philistins, on vint lui dire : « Voici que David est au désert d'Engaddi. » ³ Saül prit trois mille hommes d'élite d'entre tout Israël, et il alla à la recherche de David et de ses gens jusque sur les rochers des boucs sauvages. ⁴ Il arriva aux parcs des brebis qui étaient près du chemin ; il y avait là une caverne, où Saül entra pour se couvrir les pieds ; et David et ses gens étaient assis au fond de la caverne. ⁵ Les hommes de David lui dirent : « Voici le jour dont Yahweh t'a dit : Voici que je livre ton ennemi entre tes mains ; traite-le comme il te plaira. » David se leva et coupa à la dérobée le pan du manteau de Saül. ⁶ Après cela, le coeur de David lui battit, de ce qu'il avait coupé le pan du manteau de Saül. ⁷ Et il dit à ses hommes : « Que Yahweh me préserve de faire contre mon seigneur, l'oint de Yahweh, une chose telle que de porter ma main sur lui, car il est l'oint de Yahweh ! » ⁸ Par ses paroles, David réprima ses hommes et ne leur permit pas de se jeter sur Saül. Saül s'étant levé pour sortir de la caverne continua sa route.

   ¹ And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi. ² Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats. ³ And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave. ⁴ And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily. ⁵ And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt. ⁶ And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD's anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD. ⁷ So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way. ⁸ David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.

   ¹ Ascendit ergo David inde : et habitavit in locis tutissimis Engaddi.
   ² Cumque reversus esset Saul, postquam persecutus est Philisthæos, nuntiaverunt ei, dicentes : Ecce David in deserto est Engaddi.
   ³ Assumens ergo Saul tria millia electorum virorum ex omni Israël, perrexit ad investigandum David et viros ejus, etiam super abruptissimas petras, quæ solis ibicibus perviæ sunt.
   ⁴ Et venit ad caulas ovium, quæ se offerebant vianti : eratque ibi spelunca, quam ingressus est Saul ut purgaret ventrem : porro David et viri ejus in interiore parte speluncæ latebant.
   ⁵ Et dixerunt servi David ad eum : Ecce dies de qua locutus est Dominus ad te : Ego tradam tibi inimicum tuum, ut facias ei sicut placuerit in oculis tuis. Surrexit ergo David, et præcidit oram chlamydis Saul silenter.
   ⁶ Post hæc percussit cor suum David, eo quod abscidisset oram chlamydis Saul.
   ⁷ Dixitque ad viros suos : Propitius sit mihi Dominus, ne faciam hanc rem domino meo, christo Domini, ut mittam manum meam in eum : quia christus Domini est.
   ⁸ Et confregit David viros suos sermonibus, et non permisit eos ut consurgerent in Saul : porro Saul exsurgens de spelunca, pergebat cœpto itinere.
