¹¹ L'arche de Dieu fut prise, et les deux fils d'Héli, Ophni et Phinées, périrent. ¹² Un homme de Benjamin accourut du champ de bataille, et vint à Silo le même jour, les vêtements déchirés et la tête couverte de poussière. ¹³ Lorsqu'il arriva, Héli était assi sur un siège près du chemin, dans l'attente, car son coeur tremblait à cause de l'arche de Dieu. Cet homme étant entré dans la ville pour porter ces nouvelles, toute la ville poussa une clameur. ¹⁴ En entendant le bruit de cette clameur, Héli dit : « Quel est ce bruit de tumulte ? » Et aussitôt l'homme vint apporter la nouvelle à Héli. ¹⁵ Or Héli était âgé de quatre-vingt-dix-huit ans ; il avait les yeux fixes et ne pouvait plus voir. ¹⁶ L'homme dit à Héli : « J'arrive du champ de bataille, et c'est du champ de bataille que je me suis enfui aujourd'hui. » Héli dit : « Que s'est-il passé mon fils ? » ¹⁷ Le messager répondit : « Israël a fui devant les Philistins, et il y a eu un grand massacre parmi le peuple ; et même tes deux fils, Ophni et Phinées, sont morts, et l'arche de Dieu a été prise. » ¹⁸ A peine eut-il nommé l'arche de Dieu, qu'Héli tomba de son siège à la renverse, à côté de la porte ; il se rompit la nuque et mourut ; car c'était un homme vieux et pesant. Il avait jugé Israël pendant quarante ans.

¹¹ And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
   ¹² And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head. ¹³ And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out. ¹⁴ And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli. ¹⁵ Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see. ¹⁶ And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son? ¹⁷ And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken. ¹⁸ And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

   ¹² Currens autem vir de Benjamin ex acie, venit in Silo in die illa, scissa veste, et conspersus pulvere caput.
   ¹³ Cumque ille venisset, Heli sedebat super sellam contra viam spectans. Erat enim cor ejus pavens pro arca Dei. Vir autem ille postquam ingressus est, nuntiavit urbi : et ululavit omnis civitas.
   ¹⁴ Et audivit Heli sonitum clamoris, dixitque : Quis est hic sonitus tumultus hujus ? At ille festinavit, et venit, et nuntiavit Heli.
   ¹⁵ Heli autem erat nonaginta et octo annorum, et oculi ejus caligaverant, et videre non poterat.
   ¹⁶ Et dixit ad Heli : Ego sum qui veni de prælio, et ego qui de acie fugi hodie. Cui ille ait : Quid actum est, fili mi ?
   ¹⁷ Respondens autem ille qui nuntiabat : Fugit, inquit, Israël coram Philisthiim, et ruina magna facta est in populo : insuper et duo filii tui mortui sunt, Ophni et Phinees, et arca Dei capta est.
   ¹⁸ Cumque ille nominasset arcam Dei, cecidit de sella retrorsum juxta ostium, et fractis cervicibus mortuus est. Senex enim erat vir et grandævus : et ipse judicavit Israël quadraginta annis.
