KJV ¹ And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for to Shechem were all Israel come to make him king.

WLC ¹ וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֖ם שְׁכֶ֑מָה כִּ֥י שְׁכֶ֛ם בָּ֥אוּ כָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְהַמְלִ֥יךְ אֹתֽוֹ׃

DRB ² Et quand Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, qui était en Égypte, où il s'était enfui de devant le roi Salomon, l'apprit, il arriva que Jéroboam revint d'Égypte.

KJV ² And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt, whither he fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

WLC ² וַיְהִ֞י כִּשְׁמֹ֨עַ יָרָבְעָ֤ם בֶּן־ נְבָט֙ וְה֣וּא בְמִצְרַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּרַ֔ח מִפְּנֵ֖י שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיָּ֥שָׁב יָרָבְעָ֖ם מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃

DRB ³ Et on envoya et on l'appela ; et Jéroboam et tout Israël vinrent et parlèrent à Roboam, disant :

KJV ³ And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying,

WLC ³ וַֽיִּשְׁלְחוּ֙ וַיִּקְרְאוּ־ ל֔וֹ וַיָּבֹ֥א יָרָבְעָ֖ם וְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַֽיְדַבְּר֔וּ אֶל־ רְחַבְעָ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃

DRB ⁴ Ton père a rendu notre joug dur ; et maintenant, allège le dur service de ton père et son joug pesant qu'il a mis sur nous, et nous te servirons.

KJV ⁴ Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.

WLC ⁴ אָבִ֖יךָ הִקְשָׁ֣ה אֶת־ עֻלֵּ֑נוּ וְעַתָּ֡ה הָקֵל֩ מֵעֲבֹדַ֨ת אָבִ֜יךָ הַקָּשָׁ֗ה וּמֵעֻלּ֧וֹ הַכָּבֵ֛ד אֲשֶׁר־ נָתַ֥ן עָלֵ֖ינוּ וְנַֽעַבְדֶֽךָּ׃

DRB ⁵ Et il leur dit : Encore trois jours, et revenez vers moi. Et le peuple s'en alla.

KJV ⁵ And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.

WLC ⁵ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֗ם ע֛וֹד שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת יָמִ֖ים וְשׁ֣וּבוּ אֵלָ֑י וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ הָעָֽם׃

DRB ⁶ Et le roi Roboam tint conseil avec les vieillards qui s'étaient tenus devant Salomon, son père, lorsqu'il vivait, disant : Comment conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple ?

KJV ⁶ And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?

WLC ⁶ וַיִּוָּעַ֞ץ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֗ם אֶת־ הַזְּקֵנִים֙ אֲשֶׁר־ הָי֣וּ עֹֽמְדִ֗ים לִפְנֵי֙ שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה אָבִ֔יו בִּֽהְיֹת֥וֹ חַ֖י לֵאמֹ֑ר אֵ֚יךְ אַתֶּ֣ם נֽוֹעָצִ֔ים לְהָשִׁ֥יב לָֽעָם־ הַזֶּ֖ה דָּבָֽר׃

DRB ⁷ Et ils lui parlèrent, disant : Si tu es bon envers ce peuple, et si tu es affable envers eux, et si tu leur dis de bonnes paroles, ils seront tes serviteurs à toujours.

KJV ⁷ And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.

WLC ⁷ וַיְדַבְּר֨וּ אֵלָ֜יו לֵאמֹ֗ר אִם־ תִּֽהְיֶ֨ה לְט֜וֹב לְהָעָ֤ם הַזֶּה֙ וּרְצִיתָ֔ם וְדִבַּרְתָּ֥ אֲלֵהֶ֖ם דְּבָרִ֣ים טוֹבִ֑ים וְהָי֥וּ לְךָ֛ עֲבָדִ֖ים כָּל־ הַיָּמִֽים׃

DRB ⁸ Mais il laissa le conseil des vieillards, qu'ils lui avaient donné, et tint conseil avec les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui, qui se tenaient devant lui ;

KJV ⁸ But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.

WLC ⁸ וַֽיַּעֲזֹ֛ב אֶת־ עֲצַ֥ת הַזְּקֵנִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְעָצֻ֑הוּ וַיִּוָּעַ֗ץ אֶת־ הַיְלָדִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר גָּדְל֣וּ אִתּ֔וֹ הָעֹמְדִ֖ים לְפָנָֽיו׃

DRB ⁹ et il leur dit : Que conseillez-vous que nous répondions à ce peuple, qui m'a parlé, disant : Allège le joug que ton père a mis sur nous ?

KJV ⁹ And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?

WLC ⁹ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֗ם מָ֚ה אַתֶּ֣ם נֽוֹעָצִ֔ים וְנָשִׁ֥יב דָּבָ֖ר אֶת־ הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבְּר֤וּ אֵלַי֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הָקֵל֙ מִן־ הָעֹ֔ל אֲשֶׁר־ נָתַ֥ן אָבִ֖יךָ עָלֵֽינוּ׃

DRB ¹⁰ Et les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui, lui parlèrent, disant : Tu diras ainsi au peuple qui t'a parlé, disant : Ton père a rendu pesant notre joug ; toi, allège-le de dessus nous ; - tu leur diras ainsi : Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père ;

KJV ¹⁰ And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.

WLC ¹⁰ וַיְדַבְּר֣וּ אִתּ֗וֹ הַיְלָדִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר גָּדְל֣וּ אִתּוֹ֮ לֵאמֹר֒ כֹּֽה־ תֹאמַ֡ר לָעָם֩ אֲשֶׁר־ דִּבְּר֨וּ אֵלֶ֜יךָ לֵאמֹ֗ר אָבִ֙יךָ֙ הִכְבִּ֣יד אֶת־ עֻלֵּ֔נוּ וְאַתָּ֖ה הָקֵ֣ל מֵעָלֵ֑ינוּ כֹּ֚ה תֹּאמַ֣ר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם קָֽטָנִּ֥י עָבָ֖ה מִמָּתְנֵ֥י אָבִֽי׃

DRB ¹¹ et maintenant, mon père a chargé sur vous un joug pesant, et moi j'ajouterai à votre joug ; mon père vous a corrigés avec des fouets, et moi [je vous corrigerai] avec des scorpions*.

KJV ¹¹ For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

WLC ¹¹ וְעַתָּ֗ה אָבִי֙ הֶעְמִ֤יס עֲלֵיכֶם֙ עֹ֣ל כָּבֵ֔ד וַאֲנִ֖י אֹסִ֣יף עַֽל־ עֻלְּכֶ֑ם אָבִ֗י יִסַּ֤ר אֶתְכֶם֙ בַּשּׁוֹטִ֔ים וַאֲנִ֖י בָּֽעֲקְרַבִּֽים׃

DRB ¹² Et Jéroboam et tout le peuple vinrent vers Roboam le troisième jour, comme le roi avait dit, en disant : Revenez vers moi le troisième jour.

KJV ¹² So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.

WLC ¹² וַיָּבֹ֨א יָרָבְעָ֧ם וְכָל־ הָעָ֛ם אֶל־ רְחַבְעָ֖ם בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִשִׁ֑י כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֤ר הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר שׁ֥וּבוּ אֵלַ֖י בַּיּ֥וֹם הַשְּׁלִשִֽׁי׃

DRB ¹³ Et le roi leur répondit avec dureté ; et le roi Roboam laissa le conseil des vieillards ;

KJV ¹³ And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,

WLC ¹³ וַיַּעֲנֵ֥ם הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ קָשָׁ֑ה וַֽיַּעֲזֹב֙ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֔ם אֵ֖ת עֲצַ֥ת הַזְּקֵנִֽים׃

DRB ¹⁴ et il leur parla selon le conseil des jeunes gens, disant : Mon père a rendu pesant votre joug, et moi j'y ajouterai ; mon père vous a corrigés avec des fouets, et moi [je vous corrigerai] avec des scorpions*.

KJV ¹⁴ And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

WLC ¹⁴ וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵהֶ֗ם כַּעֲצַ֤ת הַיְלָדִים֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַכְבִּיד֙ אֶֽת־ עֻלְּכֶ֔ם וַאֲנִ֖י אֹסִ֣יף עָלָ֑יו אָבִ֗י יִסַּ֤ר אֶתְכֶם֙ בַּשּׁוֹטִ֔ים וַאֲנִ֖י בָּעֲקְרַבִּֽים׃

DRB ¹⁵ Et le roi n'écouta pas le peuple, car cela était amené par* Dieu, afin que l'Éternel accomplît sa parole, qu'il avait dite par Akhija, le Silonite, à Jéroboam, fils de Nebath.

KJV ¹⁵ So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

WLC ¹⁵ וְלֹֽא־ שָׁמַ֥ע הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־ הָעָ֑ם כִּֽי־ הָיְתָ֤ה נְסִבָּה֙ מֵעִ֣ם הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים לְמַעַן֩ הָקִ֨ים יְהוָ֜ה אֶת־ דְּבָר֗וֹ אֲשֶׁ֤ר דִּבֶּר֙ בְּיַד֙ אֲחִיָּ֣הוּ הַשִּֽׁלוֹנִ֔י אֶל־ יָרָבְעָ֖ם בֶּן־ נְבָֽט׃

DRB ¹⁶ Et tout Israël vit que le roi ne les avait pas écoutés. Et le peuple répondit au roi, disant : Quelle part avons-nous en David ? Et nous n'avons pas d'héritage dans le fils d'Isaï. Chacun à ses tentes, Israël ! Maintenant, David, regarde à ta maison ! Et tout Israël s'en alla à ses tentes.

KJV ¹⁶ And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.

WLC ¹⁶ וְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כִּ֠י לֹא־ שָׁמַ֣ע הַמֶּלֶךְ֮ לָהֶם֒ וַיָּשִׁ֣יבוּ הָעָ֣ם אֶת־ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ ׀ לֵאמֹ֡ר מַה־ לָּנוּ֩ חֵ֨לֶק בְּדָוִ֜יד וְלֹֽא־ נַחֲלָ֣ה בְּבֶן־ יִשַׁ֗י אִ֤ישׁ לְאֹהָלֶ֙יךָ֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עַתָּ֕ה רְאֵ֥ה בֵיתְךָ֖ דָּוִ֑יד וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ כָּל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְאֹהָלָֽיו׃

DRB ¹⁷ Mais, quant aux fils d'Israël qui habitaient dans les villes de Juda, Roboam régna sur eux.

KJV ¹⁷ But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

WLC ¹⁷ וּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַיֹּֽשְׁבִ֖ים בְּעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם רְחַבְעָֽם׃

DRB ¹⁸ Et le roi Roboam envoya Hadoram, qui était préposé sur les levées ; et les fils d'Israël le lapidèrent avec des pierres, et il mourut. Et le roi Roboam se hâta de monter sur un char pour s'enfuir à Jérusalem.

KJV ¹⁸ Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

WLC ¹⁸ וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֗ם אֶת־ הֲדֹרָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־ הַמַּ֔ס וַיִּרְגְּמוּ־ ב֧וֹ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶ֖בֶן וַיָּמֹ֑ת וְהַמֶּ֣לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֗ם הִתְאַמֵּץ֙ לַֽעֲל֣וֹת בַּמֶּרְכָּבָ֔ה לָנ֖וּס יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

DRB ¹⁹ Et Israël se rebella contre* la maison de David, jusqu'à ce jour.

KJV ¹⁹ And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

WLC ¹⁹ וַיִּפְשְׁע֤וּ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בְּבֵ֣ית דָּוִ֔יד עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

DRB ¹ Et Roboam s'en alla à Jérusalem. Et il assembla la maison de Juda, et Benjamin, cent quatre-vingt mille hommes d'élite propres à la guerre, pour faire la guerre à Israël, afin de ramener le royaume à Roboam.

KJV ¹ And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against Israel, that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam.

WLC ¹ וַיָּבֹ֣א רְחַבְעָם֮ יְרוּשָׁלִַם֒ וַיַּקְהֵל֩ אֶת־ בֵּ֨ית יְהוּדָ֜ה וּבִנְיָמִ֗ן מֵאָ֨ה וּשְׁמוֹנִ֥ים אֶ֛לֶף בָּח֖וּר עֹשֵׂ֣ה מִלְחָמָ֑ה לְהִלָּחֵם֙ עִם־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֶת־ הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה לִרְחַבְעָֽם׃

DRB ² Et la parole de l'Éternel vint à Shemahia, homme de Dieu, disant :

KJV ² But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

WLC ² וַיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־ יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־ שְׁמַֽעְיָ֥הוּ אִישׁ־ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים לֵאמֹֽר׃

DRB ³ Parle à Roboam, fils de Salomon, roi de Juda, et à tout Israël en Juda et en Benjamin, disant :

KJV ³ Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying,

WLC ³ אֱמֹ֕ר אֶל־ רְחַבְעָ֥ם בֶּן־ שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה וְאֶל֙ כָּל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בִּיהוּדָ֥ה וּבִנְיָמִ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃

DRB ⁴ Ainsi dit l'Éternel : Ne montez pas et ne faites pas la guerre à vos frères ; retournez chacun à sa maison, car c'est de par moi que cette chose a eu lieu. Et ils écoutèrent les paroles de l'Éternel, et s'en retournèrent et n'allèrent pas contre Jéroboam.

KJV ⁴ Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the LORD, and returned from going against Jeroboam.

WLC ⁴ כֹּ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֡ה לֹא־ תַעֲלוּ֩ וְלֹא־ תִלָּ֨חֲמ֜וּ עִם־ אֲחֵיכֶ֗ם שׁ֚וּבוּ אִ֣ישׁ לְבֵית֔וֹ כִּ֧י מֵֽאִתִּ֛י נִהְיָ֖ה הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַֽיִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ אֶת־ דִּבְרֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ מִלֶּ֥כֶת אֶל־ יָרָבְעָֽם׃

DRB ⁵ Et Roboam demeura à Jérusalem. Et il bâtit des villes en Juda, et en [fit] des forteresses.

KJV ⁵ And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem, and built cities for defence in Judah.

WLC ⁵ וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב רְחַבְעָ֖ם בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וַיִּ֧בֶן עָרִ֛ים לְמָצ֖וֹר בִּיהוּדָֽה׃

DRB ⁶ Et il bâtit Bethléhem, et Étam, et Thekoa,

KJV ⁶ He built even Bethlehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,

WLC ⁶ וַיִּ֧בֶן אֶת־ בֵּֽית־ לֶ֛חֶם וְאֶת־ עֵיטָ֖ם וְאֶת־ תְּקֽוֹעַ׃

DRB ⁷ et Beth-Tsur, et Soco, et Adullam,

KJV ⁷ And Bethzur, and Shoco, and Adullam,

WLC ⁷ וְאֶת־ בֵּֽית־ צ֥וּר וְאֶת־ שׂוֹכ֖וֹ וְאֶת־ עֲדֻלָּֽם׃

DRB ⁸ et Gath, et Marésha, et Ziph,

KJV ⁸ And Gath, and Mareshah, and Ziph,

WLC ⁸ וְאֶת־ גַּ֥ת וְאֶת־ מָרֵשָׁ֖ה וְאֶת־ זִֽיף׃

DRB ⁹ et Adoraïm, et Lakis, et Azéka,

KJV ⁹ And Adoraim, and Lachish, and Azekah,

WLC ⁹ וְאֶת־ אֲדוֹרַ֥יִם וְאֶת־ לָכִ֖ישׁ וְאֶת־ עֲזֵקָֽה׃

DRB ¹⁰ et Tsorha, et Ajalon, et Hébron, qui étaient en Juda et en Benjamin, des villes fortes.

KJV ¹⁰ And Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin fenced cities.

WLC ¹⁰ וְאֶת־ צָרְעָה֙ וְאֶת־ אַיָּל֔וֹן וְאֶת־ חֶבְר֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֥ר בִּיהוּדָ֖ה וּבְבִנְיָמִ֑ן עָרֵ֖י מְצֻרֽוֹת׃

DRB ¹¹ Et il fortifia les places fortes, et y mit des chefs*, et des approvisionnements de vivres, et d'huile, et de vin ;

KJV ¹¹ And he fortified the strong holds, and put captains in them, and store of victual, and of oil and wine.

WLC ¹¹ וַיְחַזֵּ֖ק אֶת־ הַמְּצֻר֑וֹת וַיִּתֵּ֤ן בָּהֶם֙ נְגִידִ֔ים וְאֹצְר֥וֹת מַאֲכָ֖ל וְשֶׁ֥מֶן וָיָֽיִן׃

DRB ¹² et, dans chaque ville, des boucliers et des piques ; et il les fortifia beaucoup. Et Juda et Benjamin étaient à lui.

KJV ¹² And in every several city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong, having Judah and Benjamin on his side.

WLC ¹² וּבְכָל־ עִ֤יר וָעִיר֙ צִנּ֣וֹת וּרְמָחִ֔ים וַֽיְחַזְּקֵ֖ם לְהַרְבֵּ֣ה מְאֹ֑ד וַיְהִי־ ל֖וֹ יְהוּדָ֥ה וּבִנְיָמִֽן׃

DRB ¹³ Et les sacrificateurs et les Lévites qui étaient dans tout Israël, se joignirent à lui de toutes leurs contrées ;

KJV ¹³ And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel resorted to him out of all their coasts.

WLC ¹³ וְהַכֹּהֲנִים֙ וְהַלְוִיִּ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הִֽתְיַצְּב֥וּ עָלָ֖יו מִכָּל־ גְּבוּלָֽם׃

DRB ¹⁴ car les Lévites abandonnèrent leurs banlieues et leurs possessions, et vinrent en Juda et à Jérusalem, parce que Jéroboam et ses fils les avaient repoussés de la sacrificature de l'Éternel ;

KJV ¹⁴ For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priest's office unto the LORD:

WLC ¹⁴ כִּֽי־ עָזְב֣וּ הַלְוִיִּ֗ם אֶת־ מִגְרְשֵׁיהֶם֙ וַאֲחֻזָּתָ֔ם וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ לִיהוּדָ֖ה וְלִֽירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם כִּֽי־ הִזְנִיחָ֤ם יָֽרָבְעָם֙ וּבָנָ֔יו מִכַּהֵ֖ן לַיהוָֽה׃

DRB ¹⁵ et [Jéroboam] s'était établi des sacrificateurs pour les hauts lieux, et pour les boucs* et pour les veaux qu'il avait faits.

KJV ¹⁵ And he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and for the calves which he had made.

WLC ¹⁵ וַיַּֽעֲמֶד־ לוֹ֙ כֹּֽהֲנִ֔ים לַבָּמ֖וֹת וְלַשְּׂעִירִ֑ים וְלָעֲגָלִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָֽׂה׃

DRB ¹⁶ Et à leur suite, ceux de toutes les tribus d'Israël qui avaient mis leur cœur à chercher l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël, vinrent à Jérusalem pour sacrifier à l'Éternel, le Dieu de leurs pères.

KJV ¹⁶ And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel came to Jerusalem, to sacrifice unto the LORD God of their fathers.

DRB ¹⁷ Et ils fortifièrent le royaume de Juda, et affermirent Roboam, fils de Salomon, pendant trois ans ; car ils marchèrent dans le chemin de David et de Salomon pendant trois ans.

KJV ¹⁷ So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years: for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon.

KJV ¹⁸ And Rehoboam took him Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David to wife, and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse;

DRB ²¹ Et Roboam aima Maaca, fille d'Absalom, plus que toutes ses femmes et ses concubines ; car il avait pris dix-huit femmes et soixante concubines, et il engendra vingt-huit fils et soixante filles.

KJV ²¹ And Rehoboam loved Maachah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines: (for he took eighteen wives, and threescore concubines; and begat twenty and eight sons, and threescore daughters.)

DRB ²² Et Roboam établit chef Abija, fils de Maaca, pour être prince parmi ses frères ; car [il voulait] le faire roi.

KJV ²² And Rehoboam made Abijah the son of Maachah the chief, to be ruler among his brethren: for he thought to make him king.

WLC ²² וַיַּֽעֲמֵ֨ד לָרֹ֧אשׁ רְחַבְעָ֛ם אֶת־ אֲבִיָּ֥ה בֶֽן־ מַעֲכָ֖ה לְנָגִ֣יד בְּאֶחָ֑יו כִּ֖י לְהַמְלִיכֽוֹ׃

DRB ²³ Et il agit avec intelligence, et dispersa tous ses fils par toutes les contrées de Juda et de Benjamin, dans toutes les villes fortes, et leur donna des vivres en abondance, et demanda [pour eux] beaucoup de femmes.

KJV ²³ And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countries of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fenced city: and he gave them victual in abundance. And he desired many wives.

DRB ¹ Et il arriva que, quand le royaume de Roboam fut affermi, et qu'il se fut fortifié, il abandonna la loi de l'Éternel, et tout Israël avec lui.

KJV ¹ And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.

KJV ² And it came to pass, that in the fifth year of king Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because they had transgressed against the LORD,

WLC ² וַיְהִ֞י בַּשָּׁנָ֤ה הַֽחֲמִישִׁית֙ לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֔ם עָלָ֛ה שִׁישַׁ֥ק מֶֽלֶךְ־ מִצְרַ֖יִם עַל־ יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם כִּ֥י מָעֲל֖וּ בַּיהוָֽה׃

DRB ³ avec douze cents chars et soixante mille cavaliers ; et le peuple qui vint avec lui d'Égypte, Libyens, Sukkiens, et Éthiopiens, était sans nombre ;

KJV ³ With twelve hundred chariots, and threescore thousand horsemen: and the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt; the Lubims, the Sukkiims, and the Ethiopians.

DRB ⁴ et il prit les villes fortes qui étaient à Juda, et vint jusqu'à Jérusalem. *

KJV ⁴ And he took the fenced cities which pertained to Judah, and came to Jerusalem.

WLC ⁴ וַיִּלְכֹּ֛ד אֶת־ עָרֵ֥י הַמְּצֻר֖וֹת אֲשֶׁ֣ר לִֽיהוּדָ֑ה וַיָּבֹ֖א עַד־ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

DRB ⁵ Et Shemahia, le prophète, vint vers Roboam et vers les chefs de Juda qui s'étaient assemblés à Jérusalem, fuyant* Shishak, et leur dit : Ainsi dit l'Éternel : Vous m'avez abandonné, et moi je vous ai aussi abandonnés aux mains de Shishak.

KJV ⁵ Then came Shemaiah the prophet to Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Ye have forsaken me, and therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak.

DRB ⁶ Et les chefs d'Israël et le roi s'humilièrent, et dirent :

KJV ⁶ Whereupon the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and they said, The LORD is righteous.

WLC ⁶ וַיִּכָּנְע֥וּ שָׂרֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְהַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ צַדִּ֥יק ׀ יְהוָֽה׃

DRB ⁷ L'Éternel est juste. Et quand l'Éternel vit qu'ils s'étaient humiliés, la parole de l'Éternel vint à Shemahia, disant : Ils se sont humiliés, je ne les détruirai pas ; je leur donnerai un peu* de délivrance, et ma fureur ne se déversera par sur Jérusalem par le moyen de Shishak ;

KJV ⁷ And when the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, They have humbled themselves; therefore I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance; and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.

WLC ⁷ וּבִרְא֤וֹת יְהוָה֙ כִּ֣י נִכְנָ֔עוּ הָיָה֩ דְבַר־ יְהוָ֨ה אֶל־ שְׁמַֽעְיָ֧ה ׀ לֵאמֹ֛ר נִכְנְע֖וּ לֹ֣א אַשְׁחִיתֵ֑ם וְנָתַתִּ֨י לָהֶ֤ם כִּמְעַט֙ לִפְלֵיטָ֔ה וְלֹא־ תִתַּ֧ךְ חֲמָתִ֛י בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם בְּיַד־ שִׁישָֽׁק׃

DRB ⁸ mais ils lui seront asservis, et ils connaîtront ce que c'est que mon service, et le service des royaumes des pays.

KJV ⁸ Nevertheless they shall be his servants; that they may know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.

WLC ⁸ כִּ֥י יִהְיוּ־ ל֖וֹ לַעֲבָדִ֑ים וְיֵדְעוּ֙ עֲב֣וֹדָתִ֔י וַעֲבוֹדַ֖ת מַמְלְכ֥וֹת הָאֲרָצֽוֹת׃

DRB ⁹ Et Shishak, roi d'Égypte, monta contre Jérusalem, et prit les trésors de la maison de l'Éternel et les trésors de la maison du roi : il prit tout. Et il prit les boucliers d'or que Salomon avait faits.

KJV ⁹ So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took away the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king's house; he took all: he carried away also the shields of gold which Solomon had made.

DRB ¹⁰ Et le roi Roboam fit à leur place des boucliers d'airain, et les confia aux mains des chefs des coureurs qui gardaient l'entrée de la maison du roi.

KJV ¹⁰ Instead of which king Rehoboam made shields of brass, and committed them to the hands of the chief of the guard, that kept the entrance of the king's house.

WLC ¹⁰ וַיַּ֨עַשׂ הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ רְחַבְעָם֙ תַּחְתֵּיהֶ֔ם מָגִנֵּ֖י נְחֹ֑שֶׁת וְהִפְקִ֗יד עַל־ יַד֙ שָׂרֵ֣י הָרָצִ֔ים הַשֹּׁ֣מְרִ֔ים פֶּ֖תַח בֵּ֥ית הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

DRB ¹¹ Et toutes les fois que le roi entrait dans la maison de l'Éternel, il arrivait que les coureurs venaient et les portaient, puis ils les rapportaient dans la chambre des coureurs.

KJV ¹¹ And when the king entered into the house of the LORD, the guard came and fetched them, and brought them again into the guard chamber.

WLC ¹¹ וַיְהִ֛י מִדֵּי־ ב֥וֹא הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה בָּ֤אוּ הָרָצִים֙ וּנְשָׂא֔וּם וֶהֱשִׁב֖וּם אֶל־ תָּ֥א הָרָצִֽים׃

DRB ¹² Et quand il s'humilia, la colère de l'Éternel se détourna de lui, et il ne le détruisit pas entièrement ; et aussi il y avait en Juda de bonnes choses.

KJV ¹² And when he humbled himself, the wrath of the LORD turned from him, that he would not destroy him altogether: and also in Judah things went well.

WLC ¹² וּבְהִכָּֽנְע֗וֹ שָׁ֤ב מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ אַף־ יְהוָ֔ה וְלֹ֥א לְהַשְׁחִ֖ית לְכָלָ֑ה וְגַם֙ בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה הָיָ֖ה דְּבָרִ֥ים טוֹבִֽים׃

DRB ¹³ Et le roi Roboam se fortifia dans Jérusalem, et régna. Or Roboam était âgé de quarante et un ans lorsqu'il commença de régner ; et il régna dix-sept ans à Jérusalem, la ville que l'Éternel avait choisie d'entre toutes les tribus d'Israël pour y mettre son nom ; et le nom de sa mère était Naama, une Ammonite.

KJV ¹³ So king Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem, and reigned: for Rehoboam was one and forty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother's name was Naamah an Ammonitess.

WLC ¹³ וַיִּתְחַזֵּ֞ק הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֛ם בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם וַיִּמְלֹ֑ךְ כִּ֣י בֶן־ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים וְאַחַ֣ת שָׁנָה֩ רְחַבְעָ֨ם בְּמָלְכ֜וֹ וּֽשֲׁבַ֨ע עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה שָׁנָ֣ה ׀ מָלַ֣ךְ בִּֽירוּשָׁלִַ֗ם הָ֠עִיר אֲשֶׁר־ בָּחַ֨ר יְהוָ֜ה לָשׂ֨וּם אֶת־ שְׁמ֥וֹ שָׁם֙ מִכֹּל֙ שִׁבְטֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְשֵׁ֣ם אִמּ֔וֹ נַעֲמָ֖ה הָֽעַמֹּנִֽית׃

DRB ¹⁴ Mais il fit le mal ; car il n'appliqua pas son cœur à rechercher l'Éternel.

KJV ¹⁴ And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD.

WLC ¹⁴ וַיַּ֖עַשׂ הָרָ֑ע כִּ֣י לֹ֤א הֵכִין֙ לִבּ֔וֹ לִדְר֖וֹשׁ אֶת־ יְהוָֽה׃

DRB ¹⁵ Et les actes de Roboam, les premiers et les derniers, ne sont-ils pas écrits dans les paroles de Shemahia, le prophète, et d'Iddo, le voyant, dans les registres généalogiques ? Et il y eut des guerres continuelles entre Roboam et Jéroboam.

KJV ¹⁵ Now the acts of Rehoboam, first and last, are they not written in the book of Shemaiah the prophet, and of Iddo the seer concerning genealogies? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.

DRB ¹⁶ Et Roboam s'endormit avec ses pères, et il fut enterré dans la ville de David ; et Abija, son fils, régna à sa place. *

KJV ¹⁶ And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David: and Abijah his son reigned in his stead.

WLC ¹⁶ וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב רְחַבְעָם֙ עִם־ אֲבֹתָ֔יו וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר בְּעִ֣יר דָּוִ֑יד וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ אֲבִיָּ֥ה בְנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃
