2R 17-20 (King James)

   ¹ In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah began Hoshea the son of Elah to reign in Samaria over Israel nine years. ² And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, but not as the kings of Israel that were before him. ³ Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and gave him presents. ⁴ And the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no present to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison. ⁵ Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years. ⁶ In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.
   ⁷ For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods, ⁸ And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made. ⁹ And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the LORD their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city. ¹⁰ And they set them up images and groves in every high hill, and under every green tree: ¹¹ And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them; and wrought wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger: ¹² For they served idols, whereof the LORD had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing. ¹³ Yet the LORD testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets. ¹⁴ Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God. ¹⁵ And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them. ¹⁶ And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. ¹⁷ And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. ¹⁸ Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only. ¹⁹ Also Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made. ²⁰ And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight. ²¹ For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam drave Israel from following the LORD, and made them sin a great sin. ²² For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them; ²³ Until the LORD removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.
   ²⁴ And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof. ²⁵ And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not the LORD: therefore the LORD sent lions among them, which slew some of them. ²⁶ Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land. ²⁷ Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land. ²⁸ Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the LORD. ²⁹ Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt. ³⁰ And the men of Babylon made Succothbenoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima, ³¹ And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. ³² So they feared the LORD, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places. ³³ They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence. ³⁴ Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel; ³⁵ With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them, saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them: ³⁶ But the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice. ³⁷ And the statutes, and the ordinances, and the law, and the commandment, which he wrote for you, ye shall observe to do for evermore; and ye shall not fear other gods. ³⁸ And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear other gods. ³⁹ But the LORD your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies. ⁴⁰ Howbeit they did not hearken, but they did after their former manner. ⁴¹ So these nations feared the LORD, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children's children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.

   ¹ Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign. ² Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah. ³ And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did. ⁴ He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan. ⁵ He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. ⁶ For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses. ⁷ And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not. ⁸ He smote the Philistines, even unto Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.
   ⁹ And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it. ¹⁰ And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is in the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. ¹¹ And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes: ¹² Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them. ¹³ Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them. ¹⁴ And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. ¹⁵ And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king's house. ¹⁶ At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.
   ¹⁷ And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller's field. ¹⁸ And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder. ¹⁹ And Rabshakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? ²⁰ Thou sayest, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me? ²¹ Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him. ²² But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem? ²³ Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them. ²⁴ How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? ²⁵ Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it. ²⁶ Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews' language in the ears of the people that are on the wall. ²⁷ But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you? ²⁸ Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria: ²⁹ Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand: ³⁰ Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. ³¹ Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern: ³² Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. ³³ Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? ³⁴ Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand? ³⁵ Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand? ³⁶ But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not. ³⁷ Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

   ¹ And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD. ² And he sent Eliakim, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. ³ And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and blasphemy; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth. ⁴ It may be the LORD thy God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that are left. ⁵ So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah. ⁶ And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. ⁷ Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
   ⁸ So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish. ⁹ And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against thee: he sent messengers again unto Hezekiah, saying, ¹⁰ Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. ¹¹ Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shalt thou be delivered? ¹² Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed; as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Thelasar? ¹³ Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivah? ¹⁴ And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. ¹⁵ And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth. ¹⁶ LORD, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, LORD, thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God. ¹⁷ Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands, ¹⁸ And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them. ¹⁹ Now therefore, O LORD our God, I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD God, even thou only.
   ²⁰ Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard. ²¹ This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin the daughter of Zion hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee. ²² Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel. ²³ By thy messengers thou hast reproached the LORD, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down the tall cedar trees thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his Carmel. ²⁴ I have digged and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of besieged places. ²⁵ Hast thou not heard long ago how I have done it, and of ancient times that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste fenced cities into ruinous heaps. ²⁶ Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the house tops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up. ²⁷ But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me. ²⁸ Because thy rage against me and thy tumult is come up into mine ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest. ²⁹ And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof. ³⁰ And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. ³¹ For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this. ³² Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it. ³³ By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD. ³⁴ For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
   ³⁵ And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. ³⁶ So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. ³⁷ And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

   ¹ In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live. ² Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, saying, ³ I beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. ⁴ And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the LORD came to him, saying, ⁵ Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD. ⁶ And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake. ⁷ And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered. ⁸ And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the LORD will heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the LORD the third day? ⁹ And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees? ¹⁰ And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees: nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees. ¹¹ And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the LORD: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz.
   ¹² At that time Berodachbaladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present unto Hezekiah: for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick. ¹³ And Hezekiah hearkened unto them, and shewed them all the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not. ¹⁴ Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country, even from Babylon. ¹⁵ And he said, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All the things that are in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them. ¹⁶ And Isaiah said unto Hezekiah, Hear the word of the LORD. ¹⁷ Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD. ¹⁸ And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon. ¹⁹ Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. And he said, Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days? ²⁰ And the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and all his might, and how he made a pool, and a conduit, and brought water into the city, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? ²¹ And Hezekiah slept with his fathers: and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.

¹ La douzième année du règne d'Achaz sur Juda, Osée, le fils d'Ela, devint roi d'Israël à Samarie. Il régna 9 ans.
² Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Eternel, mais pas autant que les rois d'Israël qui l'avaient précédé. ³ Salmanasar, le roi d'Assyrie, monta contre Osée, qui lui fut asservi et lui paya un tribut. ⁴ Cependant, le roi d'Assyrie découvrit qu'Osée avait conspiré contre lui en envoyant des messagers à So, le roi d'Egypte, et qu'il ne lui payait plus le tribut annuel. Il le fit alors enfermer et enchaîner dans une prison. ⁵ En outre, le roi d'Assyrie envahit tout le pays et attaqua Samarie. Il en fit le siège pendant 3 ans. ⁶ La neuvième année du règne d'Osée, le roi d'Assyrie prit Samarie et exila les Israélites en Assyrie. Il les fit habiter à Chalach ainsi que sur les rives du Chabor, le fleuve de Gozan, et dans les villes des Mèdes.
⁷ Tout cela est arrivé parce que les Israélites ont péché contre l'Eternel, leur Dieu, celui qui les avait fait sortir d'Egypte en les délivrant de l'oppression du pharaon, du roi d'Egypte, et parce qu'ils ont craint d'autres dieux. ⁸ Ils ont suivi les coutumes des nations que l'Eternel avait dépossédées devant eux et celles que les rois d'Israël avaient établies. ⁹ Les Israélites ont commis en secret des actes inadmissibles contre l'Eternel, leur Dieu. Ils se sont construit des hauts lieux dans toutes leurs villes, qu'il s'agisse de simples tours de garde ou de villes fortifiées. ¹⁰ Ils se sont dressé des statues et des poteaux sacrés sur toute colline élevée et sous tout arbre vert. ¹¹ Là, sur tous les hauts lieux, ils ont brûlé des parfums, comme les nations que l'Eternel avait exilées devant eux, et ils ont eu des activités mauvaises, par lesquelles ils ont irrité l'Eternel. ¹² Ils ont servi les idoles alors que l'Eternel leur avait dit: «Vous ne ferez pas cela.» 
¹³ L'Eternel avait averti Israël et Juda par l'intermédiaire de tous ses prophètes, de tous les voyants. Il leur avait dit: «Renoncez à votre mauvaise conduite et respectez mes commandements et mes prescriptions, en suivant entièrement la loi que j'ai donnée à vos ancêtres et que je vous ai envoyée par l'intermédiaire de mes serviteurs les prophètes.» ¹⁴ Mais ils n'ont pas écouté, ils se sont montrés réfractaires comme leurs ancêtres, qui n'avaient pas cru en l'Eternel, leur Dieu. ¹⁵ Ils ont rejeté ses prescriptions, l'alliance qu'il avait conclue avec leurs ancêtres et les avertissements qu'il leur avait adressés. Ils ont suivi des idoles sans consistance au point de perdre eux-mêmes toute consistance, ils ont suivi les nations qui les entouraient et que l'Eternel leur avait défendu d'imiter. ¹⁶ Ils ont abandonné tous les commandements de l'Eternel, leur Dieu. Ils se sont fait deux veaux en métal fondu, ils ont fabriqué des poteaux d'Astarté, ils se sont prosternés devant tous les corps célestes et ils ont servi Baal. ¹⁷ Ils ont fait passer leurs fils et leurs filles par le feu, ils ont pratiqué la divination et la magie, ils se sont eux-mêmes vendus pour faire ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Eternel, au point d'exciter sa colère. ¹⁸ Aussi, l'Eternel s'est fortement irrité contre les Israélites et il les a éloignés de lui. Il n'est resté que la seule tribu de Juda. ¹⁹ Les Judéens eux-mêmes n'ont pas gardé les commandements de l'Eternel, leur Dieu, et ils ont suivi les coutumes établies par Israël. ²⁰ L'Eternel a rejeté le peuple d'Israël dans son entier. Il les a humiliés, il les a livrés entre les mains des pillards et il a fini par les chasser loin de lui. ²¹ En effet, les Israélites s'étaient détachés de la famille de David et avaient proclamé roi Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, qui les avait détournés de l'Eternel et avait fait commettre à Israël un grand péché. ²² Les Israélites s'étaient livrés à tous les péchés que Jéroboam avait commis, ils ne s'en étaient pas détournés, ²³ jusqu'à ce que l'Eternel chasse Israël loin de lui, comme il l'avait annoncé par l'intermédiaire de tous ses serviteurs les prophètes. C'est ainsi qu'Israël a été exilé loin de son pays, en Assyrie, où il est resté jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
²⁴ Le roi d'Assyrie fit venir des gens de Babylone, de Cutha, d'Avva, de Hamath et de Sepharvaïm, et il les installa dans les villes de la Samarie à la place des Israélites. Ils prirent donc possession de la Samarie et habitèrent dans ses villes. ²⁵ Au début de leur installation, ils ne craignaient pas l'Eternel, et l'Eternel envoya contre eux des lions qui tuèrent plusieurs d'entre eux. ²⁶ On dit au roi d'Assyrie: «Les nations que tu as exilées et installées dans les villes de la Samarie ne connaissent pas la manière d'adorer le dieu du pays, et il a envoyé contre elles des lions qui les font mourir parce qu'elles ne connaissent pas la manière d'adorer le dieu du pays.» ²⁷ Le roi d'Assyrie donna cet ordre: «Envoyez-y l'un des prêtres que vous avez exilés de là-bas. Qu'il aille s'y installer et qu'il leur enseigne la manière d'adorer le dieu du pays.»
²⁸ Un des prêtres qui avaient été exilés de Samarie vint s'installer à Béthel et leur enseigna comment ils devaient craindre l'Eternel. ²⁹ Cependant, ces nations fabriquèrent chacune leurs dieux dans les villes qu'elles habitaient, et elles les placèrent dans les centres de hauts lieux construits par les Samaritains. ³⁰ Les gens de Babylone firent Succoth-Benoth, ceux de Cuth firent Nergal, ceux de Hamath firent Ashima, ³¹ ceux d'Avva firent Nibchaz et Tharthak. Ceux de Sepharvaïm brûlaient leurs enfants par le feu en l'honneur d'Adrammélec et d'Anammélec, les dieux de Sepharvaïm. ³² Ils craignaient aussi l'Eternel et ils se firent des prêtres de hauts lieux, pris parmi eux, qui offraient pour eux des sacrifices dans les centres de hauts lieux. ³³ Ainsi, ils craignaient l'Eternel tout en servant leurs dieux d'après la coutume des nations d'où on les avait exilés.
³⁴ Aujourd'hui encore, ils suivent leurs premières coutumes: ils ne craignent pas l'Eternel et ils ne se conforment ni à leurs propres prescriptions et règles, ni à la loi et aux commandements donnés par l'Eternel aux descendants de Jacob, celui qu'il a appelé Israël. ³⁵ L'Eternel avait fait alliance avec eux, il leur avait donné cet ordre: «Vous ne craindrez pas d'autres dieux, vous ne les adorerez pas, vous ne les servirez pas et vous ne leur offrirez pas de sacrifices. ³⁶ Mais l'Eternel qui vous a fait sortir d'Egypte avec une grande puissance et avec force, c'est lui que vous craindrez, c'est lui que vous adorerez, c'est à lui que vous offrirez des sacrifices. ³⁷ Vous respecterez et mettrez toujours en pratique les prescriptions, les règles, la loi et les commandements qu'il a écrits pour vous, et vous ne craindrez pas d'autres dieux. ³⁸ Vous n'oublierez pas l'alliance que j'ai faite avec vous et vous ne craindrez pas d'autres dieux. ³⁹ Mais c'est l'Eternel, votre Dieu, que vous craindrez, et lui, il vous délivrera de tous vos ennemis.» ⁴⁰ Ils n'ont pas écouté, ils ont suivi leurs premières coutumes. ⁴¹ Ces nations craignaient l'Eternel tout en servant leurs idoles, et leurs enfants et petits-enfants agissent jusqu'à aujourd'hui exactement comme leurs ancêtres.

Jusqu'à la chute du royaume de Juda (18.1–25.30)

Tentative d'invasion assyrienne

¹ La troisième année du règne d'Osée, fils d'Ela, sur Israël, Ezéchias, fils d'Achaz, le roi de Juda, devint roi. ² Il avait 25 ans lorsqu'il devint roi et il régna 29 ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s'appelait Abi et c'était la fille de Zacharie.
³ Il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l'Eternel, entièrement comme l'avait fait son ancêtre David. ⁴ Il fit disparaître les hauts lieux, brisa les statues, abattit les idoles et mit en pièces le serpent de bronze que Moïse avait fabriqué, car les Israélites avaient jusqu'alors brûlé des parfums devant lui; on l'appelait Nehushtan. ⁵ Il mit sa confiance dans l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël. De tous les rois de Juda qui lui succédèrent ou qui le précédèrent, aucun ne fut pareil à lui. ⁶ Il s'attacha à l'Eternel sans se détourner de lui et il se conforma aux commandements qu'il avait prescrits à Moïse. ⁷ L'Eternel fut avec Ezéchias qui réussit dans toutes ses entreprises. Il se révolta contre le roi d'Assyrie et ne lui fut plus asservi. ⁸ Il porta des coups aux Philistins jusqu'à Gaza et dévasta leur territoire, aussi bien les simples tours de garde que les villes fortifiées.
⁹ La quatrième année du règne d'Ezéchias, qui était la septième année du règne d'Osée, fils d'Ela, sur Israël, Salmanasar, le roi d'Assyrie, monta contre Samarie et l'assiégea. ¹⁰ Il la prit au bout de 3 ans, la sixième année du règne d'Ezéchias, qui était la neuvième année du règne d'Osée sur Israël. C'est à ce moment-là que Samarie fut prise. ¹¹ Le roi d'Assyrie exila les Israélites en Assyrie et il les conduisit à Chalach ainsi que sur les rives du Chabor, le fleuve de Gozan, et dans les villes des Mèdes. ¹² Cela arriva parce qu'ils n'avaient pas écouté l'Eternel, leur Dieu, et qu'ils avaient violé son alliance, parce qu'ils n'avaient pas écouté ni mis en pratique tout ce qu'avait ordonné Moïse, le serviteur de l'Eternel.
¹³ La quatorzième année du règne d'Ezéchias, Sanchérib, le roi d'Assyrie, monta contre toutes les villes fortifiées de Juda et s'empara d'elles. ¹⁴ Ezéchias, le roi de Juda, envoya dire au roi d'Assyrie à Lakis: «J'ai commis une faute! Eloigne-toi de moi. Ce que tu m'imposeras, je le supporterai.» Le roi d'Assyrie imposa à Ezéchias, le roi de Juda, un tribut de 9 tonnes d'argent et 900 kilos d'or. ¹⁵ Ezéchias donna tout l'argent qui se trouvait dans la maison de l'Eternel et dans les trésors du palais royal. ¹⁶ Ce fut alors qu'Ezéchias, le roi de Juda, enleva les lames d'or dont il avait couvert les portes et les linteaux du temple de l'Eternel pour les donner au roi d'Assyrie.
¹⁷ Toutefois, le roi d'Assyrie envoya de Lakis à Jérusalem, vers le roi Ezéchias, Tharthan, Rab-Saris et Rabshaké avec une puissante armée. Ils montèrent et arrivèrent à Jérusalem. Une fois montés et arrivés, ils s'arrêtèrent à l'aqueduc du réservoir supérieur, sur le chemin du champ du teinturier. ¹⁸ Ils appelèrent le roi. Le chef du palais royal, Eliakim, le fils de Hilkija, se rendit vers eux avec Shebna, le secrétaire, et l'archiviste Joach, fils d'Asaph.
¹⁹ Rabshaké leur annonça: «Transmettez à Ezéchias: ‘Voici ce que dit le grand roi, le roi d'Assyrie: Sur quoi repose donc ta confiance? ²⁰ Tu as dit qu'il fallait pour la guerre de la prudence et de la force, mais ce ne sont que des paroles en l'air. En qui donc as-tu placé ta confiance pour oser te révolter contre moi? ²¹ Tu l'as placée dans l'Egypte, tu as pris pour soutien ce roseau cassé qui pénètre et transperce la main de celui qui s'appuie dessus! Voilà ce qu'est le pharaon, le roi d'Egypte, pour tous ceux qui se confient en lui.' ²² Peut-être me direz-vous: ‘C'est en l'Eternel, notre Dieu, que nous plaçons notre confiance.' Mais n'est-ce pas lui dont Ezéchias a fait disparaître les hauts lieux et les autels en disant à Juda et à Jérusalem: ‘Vous vous prosternerez devant cet autel à Jérusalem'? ²³ Maintenant, passe un accord avec mon seigneur, le roi d'Assyrie, et je te donnerai 2000 chevaux, si tu peux fournir des cavaliers pour les monter. ²⁴ Comment pourrais-tu repousser un seul chef, même parmi les serviteurs les moins importants, de mon seigneur? Comment peux-tu mettre ta confiance dans l'Egypte pour les chars et pour les cavaliers? ²⁵ D'ailleurs, est-ce sans l'accord de l'Eternel que je suis monté contre cet endroit pour le détruire? L'Eternel m'a dit: ‘Monte contre ce pays et détruis-le!'»
²⁶ Eliakim, fils de Hilkija, Shebna et Joach dirent à Rabshaké: «Parle à tes serviteurs en araméen, car nous comprenons cette langue, et ne nous parle pas en hébreu. En effet, le peuple qui se trouve sur la muraille entend tout.» ²⁷ Rabshaké leur répondit: «Est-ce à ton seigneur et à toi que mon seigneur m'a envoyé dire ces paroles? N'est-ce pas à ces hommes assis sur la muraille pour manger leurs excréments et boire leur urine avec vous?»
²⁸ Alors Rabshaké prit position et cria à pleine voix en hébreu: «Ecoutez la parole du grand roi, du roi d'Assyrie! ²⁹ Voici ce que dit le roi: ‘Qu'Ezéchias ne vous trompe pas! En effet, il ne pourra pas vous délivrer de ma domination.' ³⁰ Qu'Ezéchias ne vous amène pas à vous confier en l'Eternel en disant: ‘L'Eternel nous délivrera et cette ville ne sera pas livrée entre les mains du roi d'Assyrie.' ³¹ N'écoutez pas Ezéchias, car voici ce que dit le roi d'Assyrie: ‘Faites la paix avec moi, sortez de la ville vers moi, et chacun de vous mangera des fruits de sa vigne et de son figuier, chacun boira de l'eau de sa citerne. ³² Ensuite, je viendrai vous emmener dans un pays pareil au vôtre, dans un pays de blé et de vin, un pays de pain et de vignes, un pays d'oliviers à huile et de miel, et vous vivrez, vous ne mourrez pas. N'écoutez donc pas Ezéchias, car il pourrait vous pousser dans une mauvaise direction en affirmant: L'Eternel nous délivrera. ³³ Les dieux des autres nations ont-ils délivré chacun son pays de la domination du roi d'Assyrie? ³⁴ Où sont les dieux de Hamath et d'Arpad? Où sont les dieux de Sepharvaïm, d'Héna et d'Ivva? Ont-ils délivré Samarie de ma domination? ³⁵ Parmi tous les dieux de ces pays, quels sont ceux qui ont délivré leur pays de ma domination, pour que l'Eternel puisse en délivrer Jérusalem?'»
³⁶ Le peuple garda le silence, il ne lui répondit pas un mot, car le roi avait donné cet ordre: «Vous ne lui répondrez pas.» ³⁷ Le chef du palais royal, Eliakim, fils de Hilkija, Shebna, le secrétaire, et l'archiviste Joach, fils d'Asaph, vinrent trouver Ezéchias, les habits déchirés, et lui rapportèrent les paroles de Rabshaké.

Délivrance de Jérusalem

¹ A l'écoute de ce rapport, le roi Ezéchias déchira ses habits, se couvrit d'un sac et alla dans la maison de l'Eternel. ² Il envoya Eliakim, le chef du palais royal, Shebna, le secrétaire, et les plus anciens des prêtres, tous couverts de sacs, vers le prophète Esaïe, fils d'Amots. ³ Ils lui dirent: «Voici ce que dit Ezéchias: Ce jour est un jour d'angoisse, de punition et de honte, car les enfants sont près de sortir du ventre maternel et il n'y a pas de force pour l'accouchement. ⁴ Peut-être l'Eternel, ton Dieu, a-t-il entendu toutes les paroles de Rabshaké, l'homme que le roi d'Assyrie, son seigneur, a envoyé pour insulter le Dieu vivant, et peut-être l'Eternel, ton Dieu, punira-t-il les paroles qu'il a entendues. Fais donc monter une prière pour le reste qui subsiste encore!»
⁵ Les serviteurs du roi Ezéchias allèrent donc trouver Esaïe, ⁶ et celui-ci leur dit: «Vous transmettrez le message suivant à votre maître: ‘Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: Ne te laisse pas effrayer par les paroles que tu as entendues et par lesquelles les serviteurs du roi d'Assyrie m'ont insulté. ⁷ Je vais mettre en lui un état d'esprit tel que, sur une nouvelle qu'il recevra, il retournera dans son pays, et là-bas je le ferai tomber par l'épée.'»
⁸ Rabshaké se retira et alla rejoindre le roi d'Assyrie au beau milieu de son combat contre Libna, car il avait appris son départ de Lakis. ⁹ C'est alors que le roi d'Assyrie reçut une nouvelle en rapport avec Tirhaka, le roi d'Ethiopie. On lui dit: «Voici qu'il s'est mis en marche pour te faire la guerre.» Le roi d'Assyrie envoya de nouveau des messagers à Ezéchias ¹⁰ avec l'ordre de dire à Ezéchias, le roi de Juda: «Que ton Dieu, celui dans lequel tu places ta confiance, ne te trompe pas en prétendant que Jérusalem ne sera pas livrée entre les mains du roi d'Assyrie. ¹¹ Tu as bien appris ce que les rois d'Assyrie ont fait à tous les pays, la manière dont ils les ont voués à la destruction. Et toi, tu serais délivré? ¹² Les dieux des nations que mes prédécesseurs ont détruites les ont-ils délivrées? Considère ce qui est arrivé à Gozan, Charan, Retseph et aux Edénites qui se trouvent à Telassar! ¹³ Où sont les rois de Hamath, d'Arpad, de la ville de Sepharvaïm, d'Héna et d'Ivva?»
¹⁴ Ezéchias prit la lettre de la main des messagers et la lut. Puis il monta à la maison de l'Eternel et la déroula devant l'Eternel. ¹⁵ Il lui adressa cette prière: «Eternel, Dieu d'Israël, toi qui sièges entre les chérubins, c'est toi qui es le seul Dieu de tous les royaumes de la terre, c'est toi qui as fait le ciel et la terre. ¹⁶ Eternel, tends l'oreille et écoute! Eternel, ouvre tes yeux et regarde! Ecoute les paroles de Sanchérib, lui qui a envoyé Rabshaké pour insulter le Dieu vivant! ¹⁷ Il est vrai, Eternel, que les rois d'Assyrie ont dévasté les nations et leur territoire ¹⁸ et qu'ils ont jeté leurs dieux dans le feu, mais ce n'étaient pas des dieux: ils avaient été fabriqués par la main des hommes, c'était du bois et de la pierre. Voilà pourquoi ils ont pu les faire disparaître. ¹⁹ Maintenant, Eternel, notre Dieu, délivre-nous de Sanchérib et que tous les royaumes de la terre reconnaissent que c'est toi seul, Eternel, qui es Dieu!»
²⁰ Alors Esaïe, fils d'Amots, fit dire à Ezéchias: «Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël: J'ai entendu la prière que tu m'as adressée au sujet de Sanchérib, le roi d'Assyrie. ²¹ Voici la parole que l'Eternel a prononcée contre lui:
»Elle te méprise, elle se moque de toi,
la vierge, la fille de Sion.
Elle hoche la tête sur toi,
la fille de Jérusalem.
²² Qui as-tu défié et insulté?
A qui t'es-tu attaqué par tes paroles?
Tu as lancé un regard insolent
sur le Saint d'Israël!
²³ Par l'intermédiaire de tes messagers
tu as défié le Seigneur, tu as dit:
‘C'est grâce à mes nombreux chars
que j'ai gravi le sommet des montagnes,
les pentes du Liban.
Je couperai les plus grands de ses cèdres,
les plus beaux de ses cyprès,
et j'atteindrai sa dernière cime,
sa forêt pareille à un verger.
²⁴ J'ai creusé des puits et j'ai bu de l'eau étrangère.
Je mettrai à sec, avec la plante de mes pieds,
tous les fleuves de l'Egypte.'
²⁵ »N'as-tu pas appris
que j'ai préparé ces événements depuis longtemps,
que je les ai prévus dans un lointain passé?
Maintenant j'ai permis qu'ils s'accomplissent
et que tu transformes des villes fortifiées en tas de ruines.
²⁶ Leurs habitants sont impuissants,
épouvantés et pleins de honte,
ils sont comme l'herbe des champs et la tendre verdure,
comme le gazon des toits
et le blé qui sèche avant d'être mûr.
²⁷ »Mais je sais quand tu t'assieds,
quand tu sors et quand tu entres,
et quand tu es furieux contre moi.
²⁸ Oui, tu es furieux contre moi
et ton arrogance est montée à mes oreilles.
C'est pourquoi je vais mettre mon anneau à tes narines
et mon mors entre tes lèvres,
et je vais te faire repartir
par le chemin que tu as pris à l'aller.
²⁹ »Voici ce qui te servira de signe: on mangera cette année ce que produit le grain tombé en terre, et une deuxième année ce qui pousse tout seul, mais la troisième année semez, moissonnez, plantez des vignes et mangez-en le fruit! ³⁰ Les rescapés de la communauté de Juda, ceux qui seront restés, plongeront de nouvelles racines vers le bas et porteront du fruit vers le haut. ³¹ En effet, un reste sortira de Jérusalem, et du mont Sion des rescapés. Voilà ce que fera le zèle de l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers.
³² »C'est pourquoi, voici ce que dit l'Eternel à l'intention du roi d'Assyrie:
Il n'entrera pas dans cette ville,
il n'y tirera pas de flèches,
il ne lui opposera pas de boucliers
et ne construira pas de retranchements contre elle.
³³ Il repartira par le chemin qu'il a pris à l'aller
et il n'entrera pas dans cette ville, déclare l'Eternel.
³⁴ Je protégerai cette ville pour la sauver
à cause de moi-même et à cause de mon serviteur David.»
³⁵ Cette nuit-là, l'ange de l'Eternel sortit et frappa 185'000 hommes dans le camp des Assyriens. Quand on se leva le matin, ce n'étaient plus que des cadavres.
³⁶ Alors Sanchérib, le roi d'Assyrie, leva le camp et repartit, et il resta à Ninive. ³⁷ Un jour où il était prosterné dans le temple de son dieu Nisroc, ses fils Adrammélec et Sharetser le frappèrent de l'épée avant de se réfugier au pays d'Ararat. Son fils Esar-Haddon devint roi à sa place.

Erreur d'Ezéchias

¹ A cette époque-là, Ezéchias fut atteint d'une maladie mortelle. Le prophète Esaïe, fils d'Amots, vint le trouver et lui annonça: «Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: Donne tes ordres à ta famille car tu vas mourir, tu ne vivras plus.»
² Ezéchias tourna le visage contre le mur et fit cette prière à l'Eternel: ³ «Eternel, souviens-toi que j'ai marché devant toi dans la vérité, avec un cœur intègre, et que j'ai fait ce qui est bien à tes yeux!» Puis il pleura abondamment.
⁴ Esaïe était sorti, mais il n'avait pas encore atteint la cour du milieu que la parole de l'Eternel lui fut adressée: ⁵ «Retourne annoncer à Ezéchias, le chef de mon peuple: ‘Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu de ton ancêtre David: J'ai entendu ta prière, j'ai vu tes larmes. Je vais te guérir et dès après-demain tu pourras monter à la maison de l'Eternel. ⁶ J'ajouterai 15 années à ta vie. Je te délivrerai, de même que cette ville, du roi d'Assyrie. Je protégerai cette ville à cause de moi-même et à cause de mon serviteur David.'»
⁷ Esaïe dit: «Prenez un gâteau aux figues.» On le prit et on l'appliqua sur l'ulcère, et Ezéchias guérit. ⁸ Ezéchias avait demandé à Esaïe: «Quel est le signe que l'Eternel me guérira et que je pourrai monter dès après-demain à la maison de l'Eternel?» ⁹ Esaïe dit: «Voici pour toi, de la part de l'Eternel, le signe qu'il accomplira la parole qu'il a prononcée: l'ombre doit-elle avancer ou reculer de 10 marches?» ¹⁰ Ezéchias répondit: «C'est facile pour l'ombre d'avancer de 10 marches. Qu'elle recule plutôt de 10 marches!» ¹¹ Alors le prophète Esaïe fit appel à l'Eternel et celui-ci fit reculer l'ombre de 10 marches sur l'escalier d'Achaz, où elle était déjà descendue.
¹² A la même époque, le roi de Babylone Berodac-Baladan, fils de Baladan, envoya une lettre et un cadeau à Ezéchias, car il avait appris sa maladie. ¹³ Ezéchias donna audience aux envoyés et leur montra l'endroit où étaient ses objets de valeur, l'argent et l'or, les aromates et l'huile précieuse, son arsenal et tout ce qui se trouvait dans ses trésors. Ezéchias leur montra absolument tout dans son palais et sur tout son territoire.
¹⁴ Le prophète Esaïe vint ensuite trouver le roi Ezéchias et lui demanda: «Qu'ont dit ces gens-là et d'où sont-ils venus pour te voir?» Ezéchias répondit: «Ils sont venus d'un pays éloigné, de Babylone.» ¹⁵ Esaïe ajouta: «Qu'ont-ils vu dans ton palais?» Ezéchias répondit: «Ils ont vu tout ce qu'il y a chez moi, je leur ai montré absolument tout dans mes trésors.» ¹⁶ Alors Esaïe dit à Ezéchias: «Ecoute la parole de l'Eternel! ¹⁷ Les jours viendront où l'on emportera à Babylone tout ce qu'il y a chez toi et que tes ancêtres ont accumulé jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Il n'en restera rien, dit l'Eternel. ¹⁸ De plus, on prendra plusieurs de tes fils, de ceux qui sont issus de toi et dont tu es le père, pour faire d'eux des eunuques dans le palais du roi de Babylone.» ¹⁹ Ezéchias répondit à Esaïe: «La parole de l'Eternel, que tu viens de dire, est bonne.» Il ajouta: «N'y aura-t-il pas paix et sécurité pendant ma vie?»
²⁰ Le reste des actes d'Ezéchias, tous ses exploits, la manière dont il a fait le réservoir et l'aqueduc pour amener l'eau dans la ville, cela est décrit dans les annales des rois de Juda.
²¹ Ezéchias se coucha avec ses ancêtres. Son fils Manassé devint roi à sa place.
