   ¹ Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag; ² It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance. ³ And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped. ⁴ And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also. ⁵ And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead? ⁶ And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him. ⁷ And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I. ⁸ And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite. ⁹ He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me. ¹⁰ So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

   ¹ Or il arriva qu'après que Saül fut mort, David étant revenu de la défaite des Hamalécites, demeura à Tsiklag deux jours. ² Et au troisième jour, voici un homme qui revenait du camp de Saül, ayant ses vêtements déchirés, et de la terre sur sa tête, lequel étant venu à David, se jeta en terre, et se prosterna. ³ Et David lui dit : D'où viens-tu ? et il lui répondit : Je me suis échappé du camp d'Israël. ⁴ David lui dit : Qu'est-il arrivé ? Je te prie, raconte-le moi. Il répondit : Le peuple s'est enfui de la bataille, et il y en a eu beaucoup du peuple qui sont tombés morts ; Saül aussi et Jonathan son fils sont morts. ⁵ Et David dit à ce jeune garçon qui lui disait ces nouvelles : Comment sais-tu que Saül et Jonathan son fils soient morts ? ⁶ Et le jeune garçon qui lui disait ces nouvelles, lui répondit : Je me trouvai par hasard en la montagne de Guilboah, et voici Saül se tenait penché sur sa hallebarde, car voici, un chariot et quelques Chefs de gens de cheval le poursuivaient. ⁷ Et regardant derrière soi, il me vit, et m'appela ; et je lui répondis : Me voici. ⁸ Et il me dit : Qui es-tu ? et je lui répondis : Je suis Hamalécite. ⁹ Et il me dit : Tiens-toi ferme sur moi, je te prie, et me tue ; car je suis dans une grande angoisse, et ma vie est encore toute en moi. ¹⁰ Je me suis donc tenu ferme sur lui, et je l'ai fait mourir ; car je savais bien qu'il ne vivrait pas après s'être ainsi jeté sur sa hallebarde ; et j'ai pris la couronne qu'il avait sur sa tête, et le bracelet qu'il avait en son bras, et je les ai apportés ici à mon Seigneur.

¹ Factum est autem, postquam mortuus est Saul, ut David reverteretur a cæde Amalec, et maneret in Siceleg duos dies. ² In die autem tertia apparuit homo veniens de castris Saul veste conscissa, et pulvere conspersus caput : et ut venit ad David, cecidit super faciem suam, et adoravit. ³ Dixitque ad eum David : Unde venis ? Qui ait ad eum : De castris Israël fugi. ⁴ Et dixit ad eum David : Quod est verbum quod factum est ? indica mihi. Qui ait : Fugit populus ex prælio, et multi corruentes e populo mortui sunt : sed et Saul et Jonathas filius ejus interierunt. ⁵ Dixitque David ad adolescentem qui nuntiabat ei : Unde scis quia mortuus est Saul, et Jonathas filius ejus ? ⁶ Et ait adolescens qui nuntiabat ei : Casu veni in montem Gelboë, et Saul incumbebat super hastam suam : porro currus et equites appropinquabant ei, ⁷ et conversus post tergum suum, vidensque me, vocavit.
