BCC ¹ Après cela, le roi des fils d'Ammon mourut, et Hanon, son fils, régna à sa place.

KJV ¹ And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.

BCC ² David dit : "Je montrerai de la bienveillance à Hanon, fils de Naas, comme son père m'a montré de la bienveillance." Et David l'envoya consoler au sujet de son père, par l'intermédiaire de ses serviteurs. Lorsque les serviteurs de David furent arrivés dans le pays des fils d'Ammon,

KJV ² Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

WLC ² וַיֹּ֨אמֶר דָּוִ֜ד אֶעֱשֶׂה־ חֶ֣סֶד ׀ עִם־ חָנ֣וּן בֶּן־ נָחָ֗שׁ כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ עָשָׂ֨ה אָבִ֤יו עִמָּדִי֙ חֶ֔סֶד וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח דָּוִ֧ד לְנַחֲמ֛וֹ בְּיַד־ עֲבָדָ֖יו אֶל־ אָבִ֑יו וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ עַבְדֵ֣י דָוִ֔ד אֶ֖רֶץ בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃

BCC ³ les princes des fils d'Ammon dirent à Hanon, leur maître : "Penses-tu que ce soit pour honorer ton père que David t'envoie des consolateurs ? N'est-ce pas pour reconnaître et explorer la ville, afin de la détruire, que David a envoyé ses serviteurs vers toi ?"

KJV ³ And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?

WLC ³ וַיֹּאמְרוּ֩ שָׂרֵ֨י בְנֵֽי־ עַמּ֜וֹן אֶל־ חָנ֣וּן אֲדֹֽנֵיהֶ֗ם הַֽמְכַבֵּ֨ד דָּוִ֤ד אֶת־ אָבִ֙יךָ֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ כִּֽי־ שָׁלַ֥ח לְךָ֖ מְנַֽחֲמִ֑ים הֲ֠לוֹא בַּעֲב֞וּר חֲק֤וֹר אֶת־ הָעִיר֙ וּלְרַגְּלָ֣הּ וּלְהָפְכָ֔הּ שָׁלַ֥ח דָּוִ֛ד אֶת־ עֲבָדָ֖יו אֵלֶֽיךָ׃

BCC ⁴ Alors Hanon, ayant saisi les serviteurs de David, leur rasa la moitié de la barbe et coupa leurs habits à mi-hauteur, jusqu'aux fesses, et il les renvoya.

KJV ⁴ Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

WLC ⁴ וַיִּקַּ֨ח חָנ֜וּן אֶת־ עַבְדֵ֣י דָוִ֗ד וַיְגַלַּח֙ אֶת־ חֲצִ֣י זְקָנָ֔ם וַיִּכְרֹ֧ת אֶת־ מַדְוֵיהֶ֛ם בַּחֵ֖צִי עַ֣ד שְׁתֽוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵֽם׃

BCC ⁵ On informa David, et il envoya des gens à leur rencontre, car ces hommes étaient dans une grande confusion ; et le roi leur fit dire : "Restez à Jéricho jusqu'à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé, et vous reviendrez ensuite."

KJV ⁵ When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

WLC ⁵ וַיַּגִּ֤דוּ לְדָוִד֙ וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח לִקְרָאתָ֔ם כִּֽי־ הָי֥וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים נִכְלָמִ֣ים מְאֹ֑ד וַיֹּ֤אמֶר הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ שְׁב֣וּ בִֽירֵח֔וֹ עַד־ יְצַמַּ֥ח זְקַנְכֶ֖ם וְשַׁבְתֶּֽם׃

BCC ⁶ Les fils d'Ammon virent qu'ils s'étaient rendus odieux à David ; et les fils d'Ammon envoyèrent prendre à leur solde les Syriens de Beth-Rohob et les Syriens de Soba, soit vingt mille hommes de pied, puis le roi de Maacha, soit mille hommes, et les gens de Tob, soit douze mille hommes.

KJV ⁶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men.

WLC ⁶ וַיִּרְאוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן כִּ֥י נִבְאֲשׁ֖וּ בְּדָוִ֑ד וַיִּשְׁלְח֣וּ בְנֵֽי־ עַמּ֡וֹן וַיִּשְׂכְּרוּ֩ אֶת־ אֲרַ֨ם בֵּית־ רְח֜וֹב וְאֶת־ אֲרַ֣ם צוֹבָ֗א עֶשְׂרִ֥ים אֶ֙לֶף֙ רַגְלִ֔י וְאֶת־ מֶ֤לֶךְ מַֽעֲכָה֙ אֶ֣לֶף אִ֔ישׁ וְאִ֣ישׁ ט֔וֹב שְׁנֵים־ עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֖לֶף אִֽישׁ׃

BCC ⁷ David l'apprit et il fit partir contre eux Joab et toute l'armée, les hommes vaillants.

KJV ⁷ And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

WLC ⁷ וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע דָּוִ֑ד וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ אֶת־ יוֹאָ֔ב וְאֵ֥ת כָּל־ הַצָּבָ֖א הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃

BCC ⁸ Les fils d'Ammon sortirent et se rangèrent en bataille à l'entrée de la porte ; les Syriens de Soba et de Rohob, ainsi que les hommes de Tob et de Maacha, étaient à part dans la campagne.

KJV ⁸ And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ishtob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

WLC ⁸ וַיֵּֽצְאוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן וַיַּעַרְכ֥וּ מִלְחָמָ֖ה פֶּ֣תַח הַשָּׁ֑עַר וַאֲרַ֨ם צוֹבָ֤א וּרְחוֹב֙ וְאִֽישׁ־ ט֣וֹב וּמַֽעֲכָ֔ה לְבַדָּ֖ם בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃

BCC ⁹ Lorsque Joab vit qu'il y avait un front de bataille devant et derrière lui, il choisit parmi toute l'élite d'Israël un corps qu'il rangea en face des Syriens ;

KJV ⁹ When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:

WLC ⁹ וַיַּ֣רְא יוֹאָ֗ב כִּֽי־ הָיְתָ֤ה אֵלָיו֙ פְּנֵ֣י הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה מִפָּנִ֖ים וּמֵֽאָח֑וֹר וַיִּבְחַ֗ר מִכֹּל֙ בְּחוּרֵ֣י וַֽיַּעֲרֹ֖ךְ לִקְרַ֥את אֲרָֽם׃

BCC ¹⁰ et il mit le reste du peuple sous le commandement de son frère Abisaï, qui les rangea en face des fils d'Ammon.

KJV ¹⁰ And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.

WLC ¹⁰ וְאֵת֙ יֶ֣תֶר הָעָ֔ם נָתַ֕ן בְּיַ֖ד אַבְשַׁ֣י אָחִ֑יו וַֽיַּעֲרֹ֕ךְ לִקְרַ֖את בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃

BCC ¹¹ Il dit : "Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras à mon secours ; et si les fils d'Ammon sont plus forts que toi, j'irai te secourir.

KJV ¹¹ And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.

WLC ¹¹ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אִם־ תֶּחֱזַ֤ק אֲרָם֙ מִמֶּ֔נִּי וְהָיִ֥תָה לִּ֖י לִֽישׁוּעָ֑ה וְאִם־ בְּנֵ֤י עַמּוֹן֙ יֶחֱזְק֣וּ מִמְּךָ֔ וְהָלַכְתִּ֖י לְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַֽ לָֽךְ׃

BCC ¹² Sois ferme et combattons vaillamment pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu, et que Yahweh fasse ce qui semblera bon à ses yeux !"

KJV ¹² Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.

WLC ¹² חֲזַ֤ק וְנִתְחַזַּק֙ בְּעַד־ עַמֵּ֔נוּ וּבְעַ֖ד עָרֵ֣י אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ וַֽיהוָ֔ה יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה הַטּ֖וֹב בְּעֵינָֽיו׃

BCC ¹³ Joab s'avança donc, ainsi que le peuple qui était avec lui, pour attaquer les Syriens, et ceux-ci s'enfuirent devant lui.

KJV ¹³ And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.

WLC ¹³ וַיִּגַּ֣שׁ יוֹאָ֗ב וְהָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עִמּ֔וֹ לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה בַּֽאֲרָ֑ם וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ מִפָּנָֽיו׃

BCC ¹⁴ Les fils d'Ammon, voyant que les Syriens avaient pris la fuite, s'enfuirent aussi devant Abisaï, et rentrèrent dans la ville. Et Joab s'en retourna de la guerre contre les fils d'Ammon et rentra dans Jérusalem.

KJV ¹⁴ And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

WLC ¹⁴ וּבְנֵ֨י עַמּ֤וֹן רָאוּ֙ כִּי־ נָ֣ס אֲרָ֔ם וַיָּנֻ֙סוּ֙ מִפְּנֵ֣י אֲבִישַׁ֔י וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ הָעִ֑יר וַיָּ֣שָׁב יוֹאָ֗ב מֵעַל֙ בְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן וַיָּבֹ֖א יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

BCC ¹⁵ Les Syriens, voyant qu'ils avaient été battus devant Israël, se réunirent ensemble.

KJV ¹⁵ And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.

WLC ¹⁵ וַיַּ֣רְא אֲרָ֔ם כִּ֥י נִגַּ֖ף לִפְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֵּאָסְפ֖וּ יָֽחַד׃

BCC ¹⁶ Hadadézer envoya des messagers pour faire venir les Syriens qui étaient de l'autre côté du fleuve, et ils vinrent à Hélam, et Sobach, chef de l'armée d'Hadadézer, marchait devant eux.

KJV ¹⁶ And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

WLC ¹⁶ וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח הֲדַדְעֶ֗זֶר וַיֹּצֵ֤א אֶת־ אֲרָם֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ מֵעֵ֣בֶר הַנָּהָ֔ר וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ חֵילָ֑ם וְשׁוֹבַ֛ךְ שַׂר־ צְבָ֥א הֲדַדְעֶ֖זֶר לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃

BCC ¹⁷ David en reçut la nouvelle et, ayant assemblé tout Israël, il passa le Jourdain et vint à Hélam. Les Syriens se rangèrent en bataille contre David, et engagèrent le combat contre lui.

KJV ¹⁷ And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.

WLC ¹⁷ וַיֻּגַּ֣ד לְדָוִ֗ד וַיֶּאֱסֹ֤ף אֶת־ כָּל־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיַּעֲבֹ֣ר אֶת־ הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן וַיָּבֹ֖א חֵלָ֑אמָה וַיַּעַרְכ֤וּ אֲרָם֙ לִקְרַ֣את דָּוִ֔ד וַיִּלָּחֲמ֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ׃

BCC ¹⁸ Mais les Syriens s'enfuirent devant Israël, et David tua aux Syriens les chevaux de sept cents chars et quarante mille cavaliers ; il frappa aussi le chef de leur armée, Sobach, qui mourut là.

KJV ¹⁸ And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.

WLC ¹⁸ וַיָּ֣נָס אֲרָם֮ מִפְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַיַּהֲרֹ֨ג דָּוִ֜ד מֵאֲרָ֗ם שְׁבַ֤ע מֵאוֹת֙ רֶ֔כֶב וְאַרְבָּעִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף פָּרָשִׁ֑ים וְאֵ֨ת שׁוֹבַ֧ךְ שַׂר־ צְבָא֛וֹ הִכָּ֖ה וַיָּ֥מָת שָֽׁם׃

BCC ¹⁹ Tous les rois vassaux de Hadadézer, se voyant battus devant Israël, firent la paix avec Israël et lui furent assujettis ; et les Syriens craignirent de porter encore secours aux fils d'Ammon.

KJV ¹⁹ And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

WLC ¹⁹ וַיִּרְא֨וּ כָֽל־ הַמְּלָכִ֜ים עַבְדֵ֣י הֲדַדְעֶ֗זֶר כִּ֤י נִגְּפוּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיַּשְׁלִ֥מוּ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיַּֽעַבְד֑וּם וַיִּֽרְא֣וּ אֲרָ֔ם לְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַ ע֖וֹד אֶת־ בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃
