   ¹³ Et on vint l'annoncer à David, en disant : Le coeur des hommes d'Israël s'est tourné vers Absalom. ¹⁴ Et David dit à tous ses serviteurs qui étaient avec lui à Jérusalem : Levez-vous, fuyons, car il n'y a pas moyen pour nous d'échapper à Absalom. Hâtez-vous de partir, de peur qu'il ne nous surprenne et qu'il ne nous accable de maux et ne fasse passer les habitants de la ville au fil de l'épée. ¹⁵ Et les serviteurs du roi dirent au roi : Quelque parti que prenne mon seigneur le roi, voici tes serviteurs ! ¹⁶ Et le roi partit et toute sa maison le suivit ; et le roi laissa dix concubines pour veiller sur la maison. ¹⁷ Et le roi partit et tout le peuple le suivait, et ils s'arrêtèrent à la dernière maison. ¹⁸ Et tous ses serviteurs marchaient à côté de lui, ainsi que tous les Kéréthiens et tous les Péléthiens ; tandis que tous les Guitthiens, au nombre de six cents hommes, qui l'avaient suivi depuis Gath, marchaient devant le roi. ¹⁹ Et le roi dit à Itthaï le Guitthien : Pourquoi viendrais-tu, toi aussi, avec nous ? Retourne et reste avec le roi, car tu es un étranger et même sans domicile. ²⁰ Tu es arrivé d'hier, et aujourd'hui je te ferais errer avec nous au hasard ? Moi-même je vais je ne sais où. Retourne, et emmène tes frères avec toi ! Grâce et fidélité [sur toi] ! ²¹ Et Itthaï répondit au roi et dit : L'Eternel est vivant et mon seigneur le roi est vivant ! là où sera mon seigneur le roi, soit pour mourir, soit pour vivre là aussi sera ton serviteur. ²² Et David dit à Itthaï : Va et passe ! Et Itthaï le Guitthien passa avec tous ses hommes et tous les petits enfants qui étaient avec lui. ²³ Et tout le pays pleurait à haute voix à mesure que la troupe passait, et le roi passa le torrent du Cédron avec toute la troupe, prenant le chemin du désert.
   ²⁴ Et voici Tsadok aussi était là, et avec lui tous les lévites portant l'arche de l'alliance de Dieu ; et ils déposèrent l'arche de Dieu tandis qu'Abiathar montait, et jusqu'à ce que tout le peuple eut achevé de sortir de la ville. ²⁵ Et le roi dit à Tsadok : Reporte l'arche de Dieu dans la ville. Si je trouve grâce aux yeux de l'Eternel, il me ramènera et me fera revoir l'arche et sa demeure. ²⁶ Et s'il me dit : Je ne prends point plaisir en toi, me voici ; qu'il me fasse selon qu'il le trouvera bon ! ²⁷ Et le roi dit à Tsadok le sacrificateur : Vois-tu, toi ? Retourne en paix dans la ville, et ton fils Ahimaats et Jonathan, fils d'Abiathar, vos deux fils, avec vous. ²⁸ Voyez ; moi j'attendrai aux gués du désert jusqu'à ce qu'il m'arrive un avis de votre part. ²⁹ Et Tsadok et Abiathar reportèrent l'arche de Dieu à Jérusalem et y restèrent. ³⁰ Et David gravissait la montée des Oliviers, montant et pleurant, la tête voilée, et il marchait nu-pieds ; et tout le peuple qui était avec lui avait la tête couverte et ils montaient en pleurant
   ³¹ Et on vint dire à David : Ahithophel est parmi les conjurés avec Absalom. Et David dit : Eternel ! rends vains les conseils d'Ahithophel ! ³² Et lorsque David fut arrivé au sommet où on adore Dieu, voici Chusaï l'Archite vint au-devant de lui, la tunique déchirée et la tête couverte de poussière. ³³ Et David lui dit : Si tu passes avec moi, tu me seras à charge. ³⁴ Mais si tu retournes à la ville et que tu dises à Absalom : Je veux être ton serviteur, ô roi ! J'ai été jusqu'ici le serviteur de ton père, et maintenant je veux être le tien ; tu déjoueras en ma faveur les conseils d'Ahithophel. ³⁵ Et les sacrificateurs Tsadok et Abiathar ne seront-ils pas là avec toi ? Tout ce que tu apprendras de la maison du roi, tu le feras savoir aux sacrificateurs Tsadok et Abiathar. ³⁶ Voici, il y a là avec eux leurs deux fils, Ahimaats, fils de Tsadok, et Jonathan, fils d'Abiathar ; vous me transmettrez par eux tout ce que vous aurez appris. ³⁷ Et Chusaï, l'ami de David, vint dans la ville ; et Absalom vint à Jérusalem.

2 Samuel 16

   ¹ Et quand David eut un peu dépassé le sommet, voici Tsiba, serviteur de Méphiboseth, vint au-devant de lui avec deux ânes bâtés et chargés de deux cents pains, de cent gâteaux de raisins secs, de cent gâteaux de fruits d'été et d'une outre de vin. ² Et le roi dit à Tsiba : Que veux-tu faire de cela ? Et Tsiba dit : Les ânes sont pour la maison du roi, pour les monter ; le pain et les fruits sont pour que les jeunes gens aient à manger, et le vin pour que ceux qui seront fatigués dans le désert aient à boire. ³ Et le roi dit : Et où est le fils de ton maître ? Et Tsiba dit au roi : Voilà, il reste à Jérusalem ; car il a dit : Aujourd'hui la maison d'Israël me rendra le royaume de mon père. ⁴ Et le roi dit à Tsiba : Voici, tout ce qu'a Méphiboseth est à toi. Et Tsiba dit : Je me prosterne ! Que je trouve grâce à tes yeux, mon seigneur le roi !
   ⁵ Et le roi David étant arrivé à Bahurim, voici, il sortit de là un homme parent de la maison de Saül, nommé Siméi, fils de Guéra ; il s'avançait en prononçant des malédictions ; ⁶ et il jetait des pierres à David et à tous les serviteurs du roi David, et toute la troupe et tous les hommes vaillants étaient à sa droite et à sa gauche. ⁷ Et Siméi parlait ainsi en le maudissant : Va-t'en, va-t'en, homme de sang, scélérat ! ⁸ L'Eternel fait retomber sur toi tout le sang de la maison de Saül, à la place duquel tu t'es fait roi, et l'Eternel a livré le royaume entre les mains d'Absalom ton fils, et te voilà dans le malheur parce que tu es un homme de sang. ⁹ Et Abisaï, fils de Tséruja, dit au roi : Pourquoi ce chien mort maudit-il le roi mon seigneur ? Laisse-moi aller lui ôter la tête ! ¹⁰ Et le roi dit : Qu'ai-je à faire avec vous, fils de Tséruja ? Qu'il maudisse ! car si l'Eternel lui a dit : Maudis David, qui lui dira : Pourquoi agis-tu ainsi ? ¹¹ Et David dit à Abisaï et à tous ses gens : Voici, mon fils qui est sorti de mes entrailles, cherche ma vie ! combien plus maintenant ce Benjamite ! Laissez-le, et qu'il maudisse, car l'Eternel le lui a dit. ¹² Peut-être l'Eternel regardera-t-il mon affliction et me rendra-t-il du bien au lieu de la malédiction d'aujourd'hui. ¹³ Et David et ses gens continuèrent leur chemin, et Siméi marchait sur le flanc de la montagne, près de David, et en marchant il maudissait, et il lui jetait des pierres et faisait voler de la poussière. ¹⁴ Et le roi et tout le peuple qui était avec lui arrivèrent à Aïéphim, et là ils reprirent haleine.
   ¹⁵ Et Absalom et tout le peuple, les hommes d'Israël, étaient arrivés à Jérusalem, et Ahithophel était avec lui. ¹⁶ Et lorsque Chusaï l'Archite, l'ami de David, arriva vers Absalom, Chusaï dit à Absalom : Vive le roi ! Vive le roi ! ¹⁷ Et Absalom dit à Chusaï : C'est donc là l'attachement que tu as pour ton ami ! Pourquoi n'es-tu pas allé avec ton ami ? ¹⁸ Et Chusaï dit à Absalom : Non ; mais celui qu'ont choisi l'Eternel et ce peuple et tous les hommes d'Israël, ne serais-je pas à lui, et ne resterais-je pas avec lui ? ¹⁹ Et en second lieu, qui est celui que je vais servir ? N'est-ce pas son fils ? Comme j'ai été le serviteur de ton père, ainsi je serai le tien. ²⁰ Et Absalom dit à Ahithophel : Donnez votre avis sur ce que nous avons à faire ! ²¹ Et Ahithopbel dit à Absalom : Va vers les concubines de ton père, qu'il a laissées pour veiller sur la maison ; et tout Israël apprendra que tu t'es rendu odieux à ton père, et les mains de tous ceux qui sont avec toi seront fortifiées. ²² Et on dressa pour Absalom une tente sur le toit, et Absalom vint vers les concubines de son père, aux yeux de tout Israël. ²³ Et un conseil donné par Ahithophel en ces jours-là était regardé comme une parole de Dieu ; il en était ainsi de tous les conseils d'Ahithophel, soit pour David, soit pour Absalom.

2 Samuel 17

   ¹ Et Ahithophel dit à Absalom : Laisse-moi choisir douze mille hommes ! et je me lèverai et je poursuivrai David cette nuit, ² et j'arriverai sur lui tandis qu'il est fatigué et que ses mains sont affaiblies ; et je l'épouvanterai, et tout le peuple qui est avec lui s'enfuira ; je frapperai le roi seul ; ³ et je ramènerai à toi tout le peuple ; l'homme que tu cherches vaut le retour de tous ; tout le peuple sera en paix. ⁴ Et cette parole plut à Absalom et à tous les Anciens d'Israël. ⁵ Et Absalom dit : Appelle encore Chusaï l'Archite, et nous entendrons aussi ce qu'il a à dire. ⁶ Et Chusaï vint vers Absalom et Absalom lui dit : Voici comment a parlé Abithophel. Ferons-nous ce qu'il a dit ? sinon, parle, toi ! ⁷ Et Chusaï dit à Absalom : Pour cette fois le conseil qu'a donné Ahithophel n'est pas bon. ⁸ Et Chusaï dit : Tu connais ton père et ses hommes comme des braves, et ils sont exaspérés comme est une ourse privée de ses petits dans la campagne. Et ton père est un homme de guerre, et il ne passera pas la nuit avec le peuple. ⁹ Voici, il est maintenant caché dans quelque fosse où dans quelque autre lieu ; et il arrivera que si dès le commencement il en tombe quelques-uns, le bruit s'en répandra et l'on dira : Il y a une déroute dans le peuple qui suit Absalom. ¹⁰ Alors, même le plus brave, au coeur de lion, perdra tout courage ; car tout Israël sait que ton père est un homme vaillant et que des braves l'accompagnent. ¹¹ C'est pourquoi je conseille que tout Israël se rassemble vers toi, depuis Dan jusqu'à Béerséba, nombreux comme le sable qui est au bord de la mer ; et tu marcheras en personne au combat. ¹² Et nous l'atteindrons dans quelque lieu qu'il se trouve, et nous tomberons sur lui comme la rosée tombe sur le sol ; et de lui et de tous les hommes qui sont avec lui il n'en restera pas un seul. ¹³ Et s'il se retire dans une ville, tout Israël apportera des cordes vers cette ville, et nous la traînerons jusqu'au torrent, de telle sorte qu'on n'y trouve plus même une pierre. ¹⁴ Et Absalom et tous les hommes d'Israël dirent : Le conseil de Chusaï l'Archite est meilleur que le conseil d'Ahithophel. Et l'Eternel avait décidé de faire rejeter le bon conseil d'Ahithophel afin de faire venir le mal sur Absalom.

   ¹³ And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom. ¹⁴ And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword. ¹⁵ And the king's servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint. ¹⁶ And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness. ³² And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head: ³³ Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me: ³⁴ But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father's servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel. ³⁵ And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king's house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. ³⁶ Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok's son, and Jonathan Abiathar's son; and by them ye shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear. ³⁷ So Hushai David's friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

   ¹ And when David was a little past the top of the hill, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and an hundred bunches of raisins, and an hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine. ² And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The asses be for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as be faint in the wilderness may drink. ³ And the king said, And where is thy master's son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem: for he said, To day shall the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father. ⁴ Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine are all that pertained unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I humbly beseech thee that I may find grace in thy sight, my lord, O king.
   ⁵ And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, thence came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera: he came forth, and cursed still as he came. ⁶ And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. ⁷ And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come out, come out, thou bloody man, and thou man of Belial: ⁸ The LORD hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and the LORD hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son: and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art a bloody man. ⁹ Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head. ¹⁰ And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him curse, because the LORD hath said unto him, Curse David. 2 Samuel 17

   ¹ Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night: ² And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only: ³ And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace. ⁴ And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel. ⁵ Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith. ⁶ And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not; speak thou. ⁷ And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given is not good at this time. ⁸ For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people. ⁹ Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom. ¹⁰ And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men. ¹¹ Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person. ¹² So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one. ¹³ Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there. ¹⁴ And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.

2 Samuel 16

   ¹ Cumque David transisset paululum montis verticem, apparuit Siba puer Miphiboseth in occursum ejus, cum duobus asinis, qui onerati erant ducentis panibus, et centum alligaturis uvæ passæ, et centum massis palatharum, et utre vini.
   ² Et dixit rex Sibæ : Quid sibi volunt hæc ? Responditque Siba : Asini, domesticis regis ut sedeant : panes et palathæ ad vescendum pueris tuis : vinum autem ut bibat si quis defecerit in deserto.
   ³ Et ait rex : Ubi est filius domini tui ? Responditque Siba regi : Remansit in Jerusalem, dicens : Hodie restituet mihi domus Israël regnum patris mei.
   ⁴ Et ait rex Sibæ : Tua sint omnia quæ fuerunt Miphiboseth. Dixitque Siba : Oro ut inveniam gratiam coram te, domine mi rex.
   ⁵ Venit ergo rex David usque Bahurim : et ecce egrediebatur inde vir de cognatione domus Saul, nomine Semei, filius Gera : procedebatque egrediens, et maledicebat,
   ⁶ mittebatque lapides contra David et contra universos servos regis David : omnis autem populus, et universi bellatores, a dextro et a sinistro latere regis incedebant.
   ⁷ Ita autem loquebatur Semei cum malediceret regi : Egredere, egredere, vir sanguinum, et vir Belial.
   ⁸ Reddidit tibi Dominus universum sanguinem domus Saul : quoniam invasisti regnum pro eo, et dedit Dominus regnum in manu Absalom filii tui : et ecce premunt te mala tua, quoniam vir sanguinum es.
   ⁹ Dixit autem Abisai filius Sarviæ regi : Quare maledicit canis hic mortuus domino meo regi ? vadam, et amputabo caput ejus.
   ¹⁰ Et ait rex : Quid mihi et vobis est, filii Sarviæ ? dimittite eum, ut maledicat : Dominus enim præcepit ei ut malediceret David : et quis est qui audeat dicere quare sic fecerit ?
   ¹¹ Et ait rex Abisai, et universis servis suis : Ecce filius meus qui egressus est de utero meo, quærit animam meam : quanto magis nunc filius Jemini ? Dimittite eum ut maledicat juxta præceptum Domini :
   ¹² si forte respiciat Dominus afflictionem meam, et reddat mihi Dominus bonum pro maledictione hac hodierna.
   ¹³ Ambulabat itaque David et socii ejus per viam cum eo. Semei autem per jugum montis ex latere contra illum gradiebatur, maledicens, et mittens lapides adversum eum, terramque spargens.
   ¹⁴ Venit itaque rex, et universus populus cum eo lassus, et refocillati sunt ibi.
   ¹⁵ Absalom autem et omnis populus ejus ingressi sunt Jerusalem, sed et Achitophel cum eo.
   ¹⁶ Cum autem venisset Chusai Arachites amicus David ad Absalom, locutus est ad eum : Salve rex, salve rex.
   ¹⁷ Ad quem Absalom : Hæc est, inquit, gratia tua ad amicum tuum ? quare non ivisti cum amico tuo ?
   ¹⁸ Responditque Chusai ad Absalom : Nequaquam : quia illius ero, quem elegit Dominus, et omnis hic populus, et universus Israël : et cum eo manebo.
   ¹⁹ Sed ut et hoc inferam, cui ego serviturus sum ? nonne filio regis ? Sicut parui patri tuo, ita parebo et tibi.
   ²⁰ Dixit autem Absalom ad Achitophel : Inite consilium quid agere debeamus.
   ²¹ Et ait Achitophel ad Absalom : Ingredere ad concubinas patris tui, quas dimisit ad custodiendam domum : ut cum audierit omnis Israël quod fœdaveris patrem tuum, roborentur tecum manus eorum.
   ²² Tetenderunt ergo Absalom tabernaculum in solario, ingressusque est ad concubinas patris sui coram universo Israël.
   ²³ Consilium autem Achitophel quod dabat in diebus illis, quasi si quis consuleret Deum : sic erat omne consilium Achitophel, et cum esset cum David, et cum esset cum Absalom.

2 Samuel 17

   ¹ Dixit ergo Achitophel ad Absalom : Eligam mihi duodecim millia virorum, et consurgens persequar David hac nocte.
   ² Et irruens super eum (quippe qui lassus est, et solutis manibus), percutiam eum : cumque fugerit omnis populus qui cum eo est, percutiam regem desolatum.
   ³ Et reducam universum populum, quomodo unus homo reverti solet : unum enim virum tu quæris : et omnis populus erit in pace.
   ⁴ Placuitque sermo ejus Absalom, et cunctis majoribus natu Israël.
   ⁵ Ait autem Absalom : Vocate Chusai Arachiten, et audiamus quid etiam ipse dicat.
   ⁶ Cumque venisset Chusai ad Absalom, ait Absalom ad eum : Hujuscemodi sermonem locutus est Achitophel : facere debemus an non ? quod das consilium ?
   ⁷ Et dixit Chusai ad Absalom : Non est bonum consilium quod dedit Achitophel hac vice.
   ⁸ Et rursum intulit Chusai : Tu nosti patrem tuum, et viros qui cum eo sunt, esse fortissimos et amaro animo, veluti si ursa raptis catulis in saltu sæviat : sed et pater tuus vir bellator est, nec morabitur cum populo.
   ⁹ Forsitan nunc latitat in foveis, aut in uno, quo voluerit, loco : et cum ceciderit unus quilibet in principio, audiet quicumque audierit, et dicet : Facta est plaga in populo qui sequebatur Absalom.
   ¹⁰ Et fortissimus quisque, cujus cor est quasi leonis, pavore solvetur : scit enim omnis populus Israël fortem esse patrem tuum, et robustos omnes qui cum eo sunt.
   ¹¹ Sed hoc mihi videtur rectum esse consilium. Congregetur ad te universus Israël, a Dan usque Bersabee, quasi arena maris innumerabilis : et tu eris in medio eorum.
   ¹² Et irruemus super eum in quocumque loco inventus fuerit, et operiemus eum, sicut cadere solet ros super terram : et non relinquemus de viris qui cum eo sunt, ne unum quidem.
   ¹³ Quod si urbem aliquam fuerit ingressus, circumdabit omnis Israël civitati illi funes, et trahemus eam in torrentem, ut non reperiatur ne calculus quidem ex ea.
   ¹⁴ Dixitque Absalom, et omnes viri Israël : Melius est consilium Chusai Arachitæ, consilio Achitophel : Domini autem nutu dissipatum est consilium Achitophel utile, ut induceret Dominus super Absalom malum.
