   ⁹ Et Absalom se trouva en présence des serviteurs de David, et Absalom montait un mulet ; et le mulet entra sous les branches entrelacées d'un grand térébinthe ; et la tête d'Absalom* se prit dans le térébinthe, et il demeura suspendu** entre le ciel et la terre ; et le mulet qui était sous lui passa outre. ¹⁰ Et un homme vit cela, et le rapporta à Joab, et dit : Voici, j'ai vu Absalom suspendu à un térébinthe. ¹¹ Et Joab dit à l'homme qui le lui rapportait : Et voici, tu l'as vu, et pourquoi ne l'as-tu pas abattu là par terre ? Et c'eût été à moi de te donner dix [pièces] d'argent et une ceinture. ¹² Et l'homme dit à Joab : Et quand je pèserais dans ma main mille [pièces] d'argent, je n'étendrais pas ma main sur le fils du roi ; car à nos oreilles le roi t'a commandé, à toi, et à Abishaï, et à Itthaï, disant : Prenez garde, qui [de vous] que ce soit, au jeune homme Absalom ;… ¹³ ou j'eusse agi perfidement contre ma vie, car rien* n'est caché au roi, et toi, tu aurais pris parti contre moi. ¹⁴ Et Joab dit : Je ne m'attarderai pas ainsi devant toi. Et il prit trois javelots dans sa main, et les enfonça dans le cœur d'Absalom, alors qu'il était encore vivant au milieu du térébinthe. ¹⁵ Et dix jeunes hommes qui portaient les armes de Joab entourèrent et frappèrent Absalom, et le mirent à mort. ¹⁶ Et Joab sonna de la trompette, et le peuple revint de la poursuite d'Israël, car Joab retint le peuple. ¹⁷ Et ils prirent Absalom et le jetèrent dans la forêt, dans une grande fosse, et élevèrent sur lui un très grand monceau de pierres. Et tout Israël s'enfuit, chacun à sa tente. ¹⁸ Et Absalom avait pris et dressé pour lui, de son vivant, une stèle qui est dans la vallée du Roi ; car il disait : Je n'ai pas de fils pour rappeler la mémoire de mon nom. Et il appela la stèle de son nom ; et elle est appelée jusqu'à ce jour le monument d'Absalom.

   ⁹ And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away. ¹⁰ And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak. ¹¹ And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a girdle. ¹² And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king's son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom. ¹³ Otherwise I should have wrought falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against me. ¹⁴ Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak. ¹⁵ And ten young men that bare Joab's armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him. ¹⁶ And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people. ¹⁷ And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one to his tent. ¹⁸ Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom's place.

   ⁹ Or Absalom se rencontra devant les serviteurs de David, et Absalom était monté sur un mulet, et son mulet étant entré sous les branches entrelacées d'un grand chêne, sa tête [s'embarrassa dans le] chêne, où il demeura entre le ciel et la terre, et le mulet qui [était] sous lui, passa au delà. ¹⁰ Et un homme ayant vu cela, le rapporta à Joab, et lui dit : Voici, j'ai vu Absalom pendu à un chêne. ¹¹ Et Joab répondit à celui qui lui disait ces nouvelles : Et voici, tu l'as vu, et pourquoi ne l'as-tu pas tué là, [le jetant] par terre ? Et c'eût été à moi de te donner dix [pièces] d'argent, et une ceinture. ¹² Mais cet homme dit à Joab : Quand je compterais dans ma main mille [pièces] d'argent, je ne mettrais point ma main sur le fils du Roi, car nous avons entendu ce que le Roi t'a commandé, et à Abisaï, et à Ittaï, en disant : Prenez garde chacun au jeune homme Absalom. ¹³ Autrement j'eusse commis une lâcheté au péril de ma vie ; car rien ne serait caché au Roi ; et même tu m'eusses été contraire. ¹⁴ Et Joab répondit : Je n'attendrai pas tant en ta présence ; et ayant pris trois dards en sa main, il en perça le coeur d'Absalom qui était encore vivant au milieu du chêne. ¹⁵ Puis dix jeunes hommes qui portaient les armes de Joab, environnèrent Absalom, et le frappèrent, et le firent mourir. ¹⁶ Alors Joab fit sonner la trompette, et le peuple cessa de poursuivre Israël, parce que Joab retint le peuple. ¹⁷ Et ils prirent Absalom, et le jetèrent en la forêt, dans une grande fosse ; et mirent sur lui un fort grand monceau de pierres ; mais tout Israël s'enfuit, chacun en sa tente. ¹⁸ Or Absalom avait pris et dressé pour soi de son vivant une statue dans la vallée du Roi ; car il disait : Je n'ai point de fils pour laisser la mémoire de mon nom ; et il appela cette statue-là de son nom ; et jusqu'à ce jour on l'appelle la place d'Absalom.
