¹ Il se trouvait là un homme de Bélial, nommé Séba, fils de Bochri, Benjamite ; il sonna de la trompette et dit : "Nous n'avons point de part avec David, nous n'avons point d'héritage avec les fils de Jessé. Chacun à ses tentes, Israël ! ² Et tous les hommes d'Israël s'éloignèrent de David et suivirent Séba, fils de Bochri. Mais les hommes de Juda s'attachèrent à leur roi, depuis le Jourdain jusqu'à Jérusalem. ³ David revint dans sa maison, à Jérusalem, et le roi prit les dix concubines qu'il avait laissées pour veiller sur la maison, et les mit dans une maison gardée. Il pourvut à leur entretien, mais il n'alla plus vers elles ; et elles furent enfermées jusqu'au jour de leur mort, vivant ainsi dans l'état de veuvage. ⁴ Le roi dit à Amasa : "Convoque-moi d'ici à trois jours les hommes de Juda ; et toi, sois ici présent." ⁵ Amasa partit pour convoquer Juda ; mais il tarda au-delà du temps que le roi avait fixé. ⁶ Alors David dit à Abisaï : "Séba, fils de Bochri, va maintenant nous faire plus de mal qu'Absalom. Toi donc, prends les serviteurs de ton maître et poursuis-le, de peur qu'il ne trouve des villes fortes et ne se dérobe à nos yeux." ⁷ Derrière Abisaï partirent les gens de Joab, les Céréthiens et les Phéléthiens, et tous les vaillants hommes ; ils sortirent de Jérusalem afin de poursuivre Séba, fils de Bochri. ⁸ Lorsqu'ils furent près de la grande pierre qui est à Gabaon, Amasa arriva devant eux. Joab avait pour vêtement une tunique militaire, et sur cette tunique était ceinte une épée attachée à ses reins dans son fourreau. Comme il s'avançait, l'épée tomba. ⁹ Et Joab dit à Amasa ; "Te portes-tu bien, mon frère ?" Et la main droite de Joab saisit la barbe d'Amasa pour le baiser. ¹⁰ Amasa ne prit pas garde à l'épée qui était dans la main de Joab ; et Joab l'en frappa au ventre et répandit ses entrailles à terre et, sans qu'on lui portât un second coup, Amasa mourut. Joab et son frère Abisaï se mirent à la poursuite de Séba, fils de Bochri. ¹¹ Mais un des jeunes hommes de Joab resta près d'Amasa, et il disait : "Qui est favorable à Joab, et qui est pour David, qu'il suive Joab !" ¹² Or Amasa s'était roulé dans son sang, au milieu de la route. Cet homme, voyant que tout le peuple s'arrêtait, tira Amasa hors de la route dans un champ, et jeta sur lui un manteau, parce qu'il voyait que tous ceux qui arrivaient près de lui s'arrêtaient. ¹³ Lorsqu'il fut ôté de la route, chacun passa après Joab, à la poursuite de Séba, fils de Bochri. ¹⁴ Joab traversa toutes les tribus d'Israël jusqu'à Abel et Beth-Maacha, et tous les hommes d'élite se rassemblèrent et le suivirent. ¹⁵ Ils vinrent assiéger Séba dans Abel-Beth-Maacha, et ils élevèrent contre la ville une terrasse, qui atteignait le rempart ; et tout le peuple qui était avec Joab s'efforçait à faire tomber la muraille. ¹⁶ Alors une femme avisée se mit à crier de la ville : "Écoutez, écoutez, je vous prie ! Dites à Joab : approche d'elle, je veux te parler." ¹⁷ Il s'approcha d'elle et la femme dit : "Es-tu Joab ?" Il répondit : "c'est moi." Et elle lui dit : "écoute les paroles de ta servante." Il répondit : "J'écoute." ¹⁸ Et elle dit : "Autrefois on avait coutume de dire : Que l'on consulte Abel, ‒ et tout s'arrangeait ainsi. ¹⁹ Je suis une des villes paisibles et fidèles en Israël ; toi, tu cherches à détruire une ville qui est une mère en Israël ! Pourquoi détruirais-tu l'héritage de Yahweh !" ²⁰ Joab répondit : "loin, bien loin de moi ! Je ne veux ni détruire ni ruiner ! ²¹ Mais un homme de la montagne d'Éphraïm, nommé Séba, fils de Bochri, a levé sa main contre le roi David ; livrez-le, lui seul, et je m'éloignerai de la ville." La femme dit à Joab : "Voici que sa tête te sera jetée par-dessus la muraille." ²² La femme alla vers tout le peuple et lui parla sagement ; et ils coupèrent la tête à Séba, fils de Bochri, et la jetèrent à Joab. Joab fit sonner de la trompette, et l'on se dispersa loin de la ville, chacun vers ses tentes ; et Joab retourna à Jérusalem vers le roi. ²³ Joab commandait toute l'armée d'Israël ; Banaïas, fils de Joïada, commandait les Céréthiens et les Phéléthiens ; ²⁴ Aduram était préposé aux corvées ; Josaphat, fils d'Ahilud, était archiviste ; Siva était secrétaire ; ²⁵ Sadoc et Abiathar étaient prêtres, ²⁶ et Ira le Jaïrite était aussi conseiller intime de David.

¹ Au temps de David, il y eut une famine, et elle dura trois ans continus. David consulta la face de Yahweh, et Yahweh dit : "C'est à cause de Saül et de sa maison, parce qu'il y a du sang, parce qu'il a mis à mort des Gabaonites." ² Le roi appela les Gabaonites et leur dit : ‒Les Gabaonites n'étaient pas d'entre les enfants d'Israël, mais ils étaient du reste des Amorrhéens, et les enfants d'Israël s'étaient liés envers eux par serment. Et néanmoins, Saül avait voulu les frapper, par zèle pour les enfants d'Israël et de Juda. ‒ ³ David dit aux Gabaonites : "Que ferai-je pour vous, et avec quoi ferai-je l'expiation, afin que vous bénissiez l'héritage de Yahweh ?" ⁴ Les Gabaonites lui dirent : "Ce n'est pas pour nous une question d'argent et d'or avec Saül et avec sa maison, et il n'est pas question pour nous de faire mourir personne en Israël." Et le roi dit : "Que voulez-vous donc que je fasse pour vous ?" ⁵ Ils répondirent au roi : "Cet homme nous a détruits et il avait formé le projet de nous exterminer, pour que nous ne subsistions pas dans tout le territoire d'Israël : ⁶ qu'on nous livre sept hommes d'entre ses fils, pour que nous les pendions devant Yahweh à Gabaa de Saül, l'élu de Yahweh." Et le roi dit : "Je les livrerai." ⁷ Le roi épargna Miphiboseth, fils de Jonathas, fils de Saül, à cause du serment par Yahweh qui était entre eux, entre David et Jonathas, fils de Saül. ⁸ Le roi prit les deux fils que Respha, fille d'Aia, avait enfantés à Saül, Armoni et Miphiboseth, et les cinq fils que Michol, fille de Saül, avait enfantés à Hadriel, fils de Bersellaï, de Molathi, ⁹ et il les livra entre les mains des Gabaonites, qui les pendirent sur la montagne, devant Yahweh. Tous les sept périrent ensemble ; ils furent mis à mort dans les premiers jours de la moisson, au commencement de la moisson des orges. ¹⁰ Respha, fille d'Aia, ayant pris un sac, l'étendit pour elle sur le rocher, depuis le commencement de la moisson jusqu'à ce que la pluie se répandit du ciel sur eux ; et elle empêcha les oiseaux du ciel de se poser sur eux pendant le jour, et les bêtes des champs pendant la nuit. ¹¹ On apprit à David ce qu'avait fait Respha, fille d'Aia, concubine de Saül. ¹² Et David alla prendre les os de Saül et les os de Jonathas, son fils, chez les habitants de Jabès en Galaad, qui les avaient enlevés de la place de Bethsan, où les Philistins les avaient suspendus, au jour où les Philistins avaient battu Saül à Gelboé. ¹³ Il emporta de là les os de Saül et les os de Jonathas, son fils, et l'on recueillit aussi les os de ceux qui avaient été pendus. ¹⁴ On enterra les os de Saül et de son fils Jonathas dans le pays de Benjamin, à Séla, dans le sépulcre de Cis, père de Saül, et l'on fit tout ce que le roi avait ordonné. Après cela, Dieu fut apaisé envers le pays. ¹⁵ Il y eut encore guerre entre les Philistins et Israël, et David descendit avec ses serviteurs, et ils combattirent les Philistins : David fut fatigué. ¹⁶ Et Jesbi-Benob, l'un des fils de Rapha, ‒ le poids de sa lance était de trois cents sicles d'airain, et il était ceint d'une épée neuve, ‒ parlait de frapper David. ¹⁷ Abisaï, fils de Sarvia, vint au secours de David ; il frappa le Philistin et le tua. Alors les gens de David lui firent serment, en lui disant : "Tu ne sortiras plus avec nous pour combattre, et tu n'éteindras point le flambeau d'Israël." ¹⁸ Après cela, il y eut encore une bataille à Gob avec les Philistins. Alors Sabochaï, le Husathite, tua Saph, qui était parmi les fils de Rapha. ¹⁹ Il y eut encore une bataille à Gob avec les Philistins ; et Elchanan, fils de Jaaré-Oreghim, de Bethléem, tua Goliath de Geth ; le bois de sa lance était semblable à une ensouple de tisserand. ²⁰ Il y eut encore une bataille à Geth. Il s'y trouva un homme de haute taille, et les doigts de ses mains et les doigts de ses pieds étaient au nombre respectif de six, vingt-quatre en tout, et lui aussi descendait de Rapha. ²¹ Il insulta Israël, et Jonathan, fils de Samaa, frère de David, le tua. ²² Ces quatre hommes étaient des fils de Rapha, à Geth ; ils périrent par la main de David et par la main de ses serviteurs.

¹ David adressa à Yahweh les paroles de ce cantique, au jour où Yahweh l'eut délivré de la main de tous ses ennemis et de la main de Saül. ² Il dit : Yahweh est mon rocher, ma forteresse, mon libérateur, ³ Dieu est mon roc où je trouve un asile, mon bouclier, la corne de mon salut, ma haute retraite et mon refuge. Mon Sauveur, tu m'as sauvé de la violence. ⁴ J'invoquai celui qui est digne de louange, Yahweh, et je fus délivré de mes ennemis. ⁵ Car les vagues de la mort m'environnaient, les torrents de Bélial m'épouvantaient. ⁶ Les liens du schéol m'enlaçaient, les filets de la mort étaient tombés devant moi. ⁷ Dans ma détresse, j'invoquai Yahweh, et je criai vers mon Dieu ; de son temple il entendit ma voix, et mon cri parvint à ses oreilles. ⁸ La terre fut ébranlée et trembla, les fondements du ciel s'agitèrent ; ils furent ébranlés, parce qu'il était courroucé ; ⁹ une fumée montait de ses narines, et un feu dévorant sortait de sa bouche ; il en jaillissait des charbons embrasés. ¹⁰ Il abaissa les cieux, et descendit ; une sombre nuée était sous ses pieds. ¹¹ Il monta sur un Chérubin, et il volait, il apparut sur les ailes du vent. ¹² Il s'entoura des ténèbres comme d'une tente, d'amas d'eaux et de sombres nuages. ¹³ De l'éclat qui le précédait jaillissaient des charbons de feu. ¹⁴ Yahweh tonna des cieux, le Très-Haut fit retentir sa voix. ¹⁵ Il lança des flèches et les dispersa, la foudre, et il les confondit. ¹⁶ Alors le lit de la mer apparut, les fondements de la terre furent mis à nu ; à la menace de Yahweh, au souffle du vent de ses narines. ¹⁷ Il étendit sa main d'en haut et me saisit, il me retira des grandes eaux ; ¹⁸ il me délivra de mon ennemi puissant, de ceux qui me haïssaient, alors qu'ils étaient plus forts que moi. ¹⁹ Ils m'avaient surpris au jour de mon malheur, mais Yahweh fut mon appui. ²⁰ Il m'a mis au large, il m'a sauvé, parce qu'il s'est complu en moi. ²¹ Yahweh m'a récompensé selon ma justice, il m'a rendu selon la pureté de mes mains. ²² Car j'ai gardé les voies de Yahweh, et je n'ai pas péché, pour m'éloigner de mon Dieu. ²³ Tous ses jugements étaient devant moi, et je ne m'écartais pas de ses lois. ²⁴ J'étais sans reproche envers lui, et je me tenais en garde contre mon iniquité. ²⁵ Yahweh m'a rendu selon ma justice, selon ma pureté devant ses yeux. ²⁶ Avec celui qui est bon, tu te montres bon, avec l'homme droit, tu te montres droit ; ²⁷ avec celui qui est pur, tu te montres pur, et avec le fourbe, tu agis perfidement. ²⁸ Tu sauves le peuple humilié, et de ton regard tu abaisses les orgueilleux. ²⁹ Car tu es ma lumière, ô Yahweh ; Yahweh éclaire mes ténèbres. ³⁰ Avec toi je me précipite sur les bataillons armés. Avec mon Dieu je franchis les murailles. ³¹ Dieu ! Ses voies sont parfaites, la parole de Yahweh est éprouvée ; il est un bouclier pour tous ceux qui se confient en lui. ³² Car qui est Dieu, si ce n'est Yahweh, et qui est un rocher, si ce n'est notre Dieu ? ³³ Dieu est ma forte citadelle, il conduit l'homme intègre dans sa voie, ³⁴ Il rend mes pieds semblables à ceux des biches, et il me fait tenir debout sur mes hauteurs. ³⁵ Il forme mes mains au combat, et mes bras tendent l'arc d'airain. ³⁶ Tu m'as donné le bouclier de ton salut, et ta douleur me fait grandir. ³⁷ Tu élargis mon pas au-dessous de moi, et mes pieds ne chancellent point. ³⁸ Je poursuis mes ennemis et je les détruis ; je ne reviens pas sans les avoir anéantis. ³⁹ Je les anéantis, je les brise, ils ne se relèvent pas ; ils tombent sous mes pieds. ⁴⁰ Tu me ceins de force pour le combat, tu fais plier sous moi mes adversaires. ⁴¹ Mes ennemis, tu leur fais tourner le dos devant moi, comme à ceux qui me haïssent, pour que je les extermine. ⁴² Ils regardent, et personne qui les sauve ! Ils crient vers Yahweh, et il ne leur répond pas ! ⁴³ Je les broie comme la poussière de la terre ; comme la boue des rues, je les écrase, je les foule. ⁴⁴ Tu me délivres des révoltes de mon peuple ; tu me conserves pour chef des nations ; un peuple que je ne connaissais pas m'est asservi. ⁴⁵ Les fils de l'étranger me flattent, dès qu'ils ont entendu, ils m'obéissent. ⁴⁶ Les fils de l'étranger sont défaillants, ils sortent tremblants de leurs forteresses. ⁴⁷ Vive Yahweh et béni soit mon rocher ! Dieu, mon rocher de refuge, qu'il soit exalté ! ⁴⁸ Dieu, qui m'accorde des vengeances, qui fait descendre les peuples sous mes pieds, ⁴⁹ qui me fait échapper à mes ennemis ; toi qui m'élèves au-dessus de mes adversaires, qui me délivres de l'homme de violence. ⁵⁰ C'est pourquoi je te louerai parmi les nations, ô Yahweh, et je chanterai à la gloire de ton nom. ⁵¹ Il accorde de glorieuses délivrances à son roi, il fait miséricorde à son oint, à David et à sa postérité pour toujours.

¹ Voici les dernières paroles de David : Oracle de David, fils d'Isaï, oracle de l'homme haut placé, de l'oint du Dieu de Jacob, de l'aimable chantre d'Israël. ² L'Esprit de Yahweh a parlé par moi, et sa parole est sur ma langue. ³ Le Dieu d'Israël a parlé, le Rocher d'Israël a parlé : Un juste dominant sur les hommes, dominant dans la crainte de Dieu !... ⁴ C'est comme la lumière du matin, quand se lève le soleil, un matin sans nuages ! Par ses rayons, après la pluie, l'herbe sort de terre. ⁵ N'en est-il pas ainsi de ma maison avec Dieu ? Car il a fait avec moi une alliance éternelle, de tous points bien ordonnée et gardée ; oui, il fera germer tout mon salut et tout son bon plaisir. ⁶ Mais les gens de Bélial sont tous comme des épines que l'on rejette, on ne les prend pas avec la main ; ⁷ l'homme qui y touche s'arme d'un fer ou d'un bois de lance, et on les consume par le feu sur place. ⁸ Voici les noms des héros qui étaient au service de David : Jessbam, fils de Hachamoni, chef des officiers. Il brandit sa lance sur huit cents hommes, qu'il fit périr en une seule fois. ⁹ Après lui, Éléazar, fils de Dodo, fils d'Ahohi. Il était parmi les trois vaillants qui étaient avec David, lorsqu'ils défièrent les Philistins qui étaient rassemblés là pour combattre, tandis que les hommes d'Israël remontaient. ¹⁰ Il se leva et frappa les Philistins jusqu'à ce que sa main fut lasse, et que sa main adhérât à l'épée. Yahweh opéra une grande délivrance en ce jour-là, et le peuple revint à la suite d'Eléazar, mais seulement pour ramasser les dépouilles. ¹¹ Après lui, Semma, fils d'Agé, le Haradite. Les Philistins s'étaient rassemblés en une seule troupe ; il y avait là une pièce de terre pleine de lentilles, et le peuple fuyait devant les Philistins. ¹² Semma se plaça au milieu du champ, le défendit et battit les Philistins. Et Yahweh opéra une grande délivrance. ¹³ Trois d'entre les trente capitaines descendirent et vinrent, au temps de la moisson, auprès de David, à la caverne d'Odollam, tandis qu'une troupe de Philistins était campée dans la vallée des Réphaïm. ¹⁴ David était alors dans la forteresse, et il y avait un poste de Philistins à Bethléem. David eut un désir, et il dit : "Qui me fera boire de l'eau de la citerne qui est à la porte de Bethléem ?" ¹⁶ Aussitôt les trois braves, passant au travers du camp des Philistins, puisèrent de l'eau de la citerne qui est à la porte de Bethléem. Ils la prirent et l'apportèrent à David ; mais il ne voulut pas la boire, et il en fit une libation à Yahweh, ¹⁷ en disant : "Loin de moi, ô Yahweh, de faire cela ! N'est-ce pas le sang de ces hommes qui sont allés au péril de leur vie ?" Et il ne voulut pas la boire. Voilà ce que firent ces trois braves. ¹⁸ Abisaï, frère de Joab, fils de Sarvia, était aussi chef des officiers. Il brandit sa lance contre trois cents hommes et les tua, et il eut du renom parmi les trois. ¹⁹ Il était le plus considéré d'entre les trois, et il fut leur chef ; mais il n'égala pas les trois premiers. ²⁰ Banaïas, fils de Joïadas, fils d'un homme vaillant et riche en exploits, de Cabséel. Il frappa les deux ariels de Moab. Il descendit et frappa le lion au milieu de la citerne un jour de neige. ²¹ Il frappa un Egyptien d'un aspect redoutable ; et dans la main de l'Egyptien il y avait une lance. Il descendit vers lui avec un bâton, et il arracha la lance de la main de l'Egyptien et le frappa de sa propre lance. ²² Voilà ce que fit Banaïas, fils de Joïadas, et il eut du renom parmi les trois vaillants. ²³ Il était plus considéré que les trente, mais il n'égala pas les trois. David le fit membre de son conseil. ²⁴ Asaël, frère de Joab, était des trente ; Elchanan, fils de Dodo, de Bethléem ; ²⁵ Semma, de Harod ; Elica, de Harod ; ²⁶ Hélès de Phali ; Hira, fils d'Accès, de Thécué ; ²⁷ Abiéser, d'Anathoth ; Mobonnaï, le Husatite ; ²⁸ Selmon, l'Ahohite ; Maharaï, de Nétopha ; ²⁹ Héled, fils de Baana, de Nétopha ; Ethaï, fils de Ribaï, de Gabaa des fils de Benjamin ; ³⁰ Banaïa, de Pharaton ; Heddaï, des vallées de Gaas ; ³¹ Abi-Albon, d'Araba ; Azmaveth, de Bérom ; ³² Eliaba, de Salabon ; Benê-Yassen ; Jonathan ; ³³ Semma, le Hararite ; Ahiam, fils de Sarar, le Haradite ; ³⁴ Eliphélet, fils d'Aasbaï, fils d'un Machatien ; Eliam, fils d'Achitophel, de Gilo ; ³⁵ Hesraï, de Carmel ; Pharaï, d'Arbi ; ³⁶ Igaal, fils de Nathan, de Soba ; Bonni de Gad ; ³⁷ Sélec, l'Ammonite ; Naharaï, de Béroth, écuyer de Joab, fils de Sarvia ; ³⁸ Ira, de Jéther ; Gareb, de Jéther ; ³⁹ Urie, le Héthéen. ¹ La colère de Yahweh s'enflamma de nouveau contre Israël, et il exita David contre eux, en disant : "Va, fais le dénombrement d'Israël et de Juda." ² Le roi dit à Joab, chef de l'armée, qui était avec lui : "parcours donc toutes les tribus d'Israël, depuis Dan jusqu'à Bersabée ; faites le dénombrement du peuple, afin que je sache le chiffre du peuple." ³ Joab dit au roi : "que Yahweh ton Dieu ajoute au peuple cent fois ce qu'il y en a, et que les yeux du roi mon seigneur le voient ! Mais pourquoi le roi mon seigneur met-il son plaisir à faire cela ?" ⁴ Mais la parole du roi prévalut contre Joab, et sur les chefs de l'armée ; et Joab et les chefs de l'armée partirent de devant le roi pour faire le dénombrement du peuple d'Israël. ⁵ Ayant passé le Jourdain, ils campèrent à Aroër, à droite de la ville, qui est au milieu de la vallée de Gad, puis à Jazer. ⁶ Ils vinrent en Galaad et dans le pays de Thachthim-Hodsi ; puis ils vinrent à Dan-Jaan et aux environs de Sidon. ⁷ Ils vinrent à la place forte de Tyr et dans toutes les villes des Hévéens et des Chananéens, ils aboutirent au Négeb de Juda, à Bersabée. ⁸ Lorsqu'ils eurent ainsi parcouru tout le pays, ils revinrent à Jérusalem au bout de neuf mois et vingt jours. ⁹ Joab remit au roi le rôle du dénombrement du peuple : il y avait en Israël huit cent mille hommes de guerre tirant l'épée, et en Juda cinq cent mille hommes. ¹⁰ David sentit battre son coeur après qu'il eut compté le peuple, et David dit à Yahweh : "J'ai commis un grand péché en ce que j'ai fait ! Maintenant, ô Yahweh, ôtez, je vous prie, l'iniquité de votre serviteur, car j'ai tout à fait agi en insensé." ¹¹ Le lendemain, quand David se leva, la parole de Yahweh fut adressée à Gad, le prophète, le voyant de David, en ces termes : ¹² "Va dire à David : Ainsi parle Yahweh : Je mets devant toi trois choses ; choisis-en une, et je te la ferai." ¹³ Gad vint vers David et lui fit connaître la parole de Yahweh, et lui dit : "une famine de sept années viendra-t-elle dans ton pays, ou bien fuiras-tu trois mois devant tes ennemis qui te poursuivront, ou bien y aura-t-il une peste de trois jours dans ton pays ? Maintenant, sache et vois ce que je dois répondre à celui qui m'envoie." ¹⁴ David répondit à Gad : "Je suis dans une cruelle angoisse. Ah ! Tombons entre les mains de Yahweh, car ses miséricordes sont grandes ; mais que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes !" ¹⁵ Et Yahweh envoya une peste en Israël depuis le matin de ce jour jusqu'au temps fixé ; et il mourut, de Dan à Bersabée, soixante-dix mille hommes parmi le peuple. ¹⁶ L'ange étendait la main sur Jérusalem pour la détruire. Et Yahweh se repentit de ce mal, et il dit à l'ange qui faisait périr le peuple : "Assez ! Retire maintenant ta main." L'ange de Yahweh se tenait près de l'aire d'Areuna, le Jébuséen. ¹⁷ A la vue de l'ange qui frappait le peuple, David dit à Yahweh : "Voici, c'est moi qui ai péché, c'est moi qui suis coupable ; mais celles-là, ces brebis, qu'ont-elles fait ? Et David répondit : "Pour acheter de toi cette aire afin de bâtir un autel à Yahweh, pour que la plaie se retire de dessus le peuple." ²² Areuna dit à David : "que mon seigneur le roi prenne l'aire et qu'il offre en sacrifice ce qu'il trouvera bon ! Voici les boeufs pour l'holocauste, les traîneaux et les jougs des boeufs pour le bois. ²³ Tout cela, ô roi, Areuna le donne au roi." Et Areuna dit encore au roi : "Que Yahweh ; ton Dieu, te sois favorable !" ²⁴ Mais le roi dit à Areuna : "Non ! Mais je veux l'acheter de toi à prix d'argent, et je n'offrirai point à Yahweh, mon Dieu, des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien." Et David acheta l'aire et les boeufs pour cinquante sicles d'argent. ²⁵ Et David bâtit là un autel à Yahweh et offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques.    ¹ And there happened to be there a man of Belial, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite: and he blew a trumpet, and said, We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tents, O Israel. ² So every man of Israel went up from after David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri: but the men of Judah clave unto their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem. ³ And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward, and fed them, but went not in unto them. So they were shut up unto the day of their death, living in widowhood.

2 Samuel 21

   ¹ Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites. ² And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.) ³ Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the LORD? ⁴ And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you. ⁵ And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts of Israel, ⁶ Let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto the LORD in Gibeah of Saul, whom the LORD did choose. And the king said, I will give them. ⁷ But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD's oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul. ⁸ But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite: ⁹ And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the hill before the LORD: and they fell all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.
   ¹⁰ And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night. ¹¹ And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done. ¹² And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabeshgilead, which had stolen them from the street of Bethshan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa: ¹³ And he brought up from thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son; and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged. ¹⁴ And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.
   ¹⁵ Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint. ¹⁶ And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David. ¹⁷ But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel. ¹⁸ And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant. ¹⁹ And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam. ²⁰ And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant. ²¹ And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimeah the brother of David slew him. ²² These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

   ¹ And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
   ² And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; ³ The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. ⁴ I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. ⁵ When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid; ⁶ The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me; ⁷ In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears. ⁸ Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth. ⁹ There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it. ¹⁰ He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet. ¹¹ And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind. ¹² And he made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies. ¹³ Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled. ¹⁴ The LORD thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice. ¹⁵ And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them. ¹⁶ And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. ¹⁷ He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters; ¹⁸ He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me. ¹⁹ They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay. ²⁰ He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me. ²¹ The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me. ²² For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God. ²³ For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them. ²⁴ I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity. ²⁵ Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight. ²⁶ With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright. ²⁷ With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury. ²⁸ And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down. ²⁹ For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness. ³⁰ For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall. ³¹ As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him. ³² For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God? ³³ God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect. ³⁴ He maketh my feet like hinds' feet: and setteth me upon my high places. ³⁵ He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. ³⁶ Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great. ³⁷ Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; so that my feet did not slip. ³⁸ I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them. ³⁹ And I have consumed them, and wounded them, that they could not arise: yea, they are fallen under my feet. ⁴⁰ For thou hast girded me with strength to battle: them that rose up against me hast thou subdued under me. ⁴¹ Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me. ⁴² They looked, but there was none to save; even unto the LORD, but he answered them not. ⁴³ Then did I beat them as small as the dust of the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the street, and did spread them abroad. ⁴⁴ Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me. ⁴⁵ Strangers shall submit themselves unto me: as soon as they hear, they shall be obedient unto me. ⁴⁶ Strangers shall fade away, and they shall be afraid out of their close places. ⁴⁷ The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation. ⁴⁸ It is God that avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me. ⁴⁹ And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man. ⁵⁰ Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name. ⁵¹ He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.

2 Samuel 23

   ¹ Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said, ² The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue. ³ The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. ⁴ And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain. ⁵ Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow. ⁶ But the sons of Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands: ⁷ But the man that shall touch them must be fenced with iron and the staff of a spear; and they shall be utterly burned with fire in the same place.
   ⁸ These be the names of the mighty men whom David had: The Tachmonite that sat in the seat, chief among the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite: he lift up his spear against eight hundred, whom he slew at one time. ⁹ And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away: ¹⁰ He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword: and the LORD wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to spoil. ¹¹ And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentiles: and the people fled from the Philistines. ¹² But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: and the LORD wrought a great victory. ¹³ And three of the thirty chief went down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam: and the troop of the Philistines pitched in the valley of Rephaim. ¹⁴ And David was then in an hold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. ¹⁵ And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate! ¹⁶ And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD. ¹⁷ And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men. ¹⁸ And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief among three. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred, and slew them, and had the name among three. ¹⁹ Was he not most honourable of three? therefore he was their captain: howbeit he attained not unto the first three. ²⁰ And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done many acts, he slew two lionlike men of Moab: he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow: ²¹ And he slew an Egyptian, a goodly man: and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear. ²² These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among three mighty men. ²³ He was more honourable than the thirty, but he attained not to the first three. And David set him over his guard. ²⁴ Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, ²⁵ Shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite, ²⁶ Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, ²⁷ Abiezer the Anethothite, Mebunnai the Hushathite, ²⁸ Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite, ²⁹ Heleb the son of Baanah, a Netophathite, Ittai the son of Ribai out of Gibeah of the children of Benjamin, ³⁰ Benaiah the Pirathonite, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash, ³¹ Abialbon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite, ³² Eliahba the Shaalbonite, of the sons of Jashen, Jonathan, ³³ Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Hararite, ³⁴ Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maachathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite, ³⁵ Hezrai the Carmelite, Paarai the Arbite, ³⁶ Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite, ³⁷ Zelek the Ammonite, Nahari the Beerothite, armourbearer to Joab the son of Zeruiah, ³⁸ Ira an Ithrite, Gareb an Ithrite, ³⁹ Uriah the Hittite: thirty and seven in all.

2 Samuel 24

   ¹ And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah. ² For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people. ³ And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing? ⁴ Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel. ⁵ And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer: ⁶ Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtimhodshi; and they came to Danjaan, and about to Zidon, ⁷ And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beersheba. ⁸ So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. ⁹ And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.
   ¹⁰ And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly. ¹¹ For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying, ¹² Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee. ¹³ So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me. ¹⁴ And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man. ¹⁵ So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men. ¹⁶ And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite. ¹⁷ And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.
   ¹⁸ And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite. ¹⁹ And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the LORD commanded. ²⁰ And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground. ²¹ And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people. ²² And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood. ²³ All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee. ²⁴ And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. ²⁵ And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
