   ¹ A l'approche du septième mois, comme les fils d'Israël étaient dans leurs villes, le peuple se rassembla à Jérusalem comme un seul homme. ² Et Josué, fils de Jotsadak, et ses frères les sacrificateurs, Zorobabel, fils de Séalthiel et ses frères, se levèrent et bâtirent l'autel du Dieu d'Israël pour y offrir des holocaustes selon ce qui est écrit dans la loi de Moïse, homme de Dieu. ³ Et ils établirent l'autel sur ses fondements, parce qu'ils étaient sous la crainte des peuples des pays voisins, et ils y offrirent des holocaustes à l'Eternel, holocaustes du matin et du soir. ⁴ Et ils célébrèrent la fête des Tabernacles selon ce qui est écrit, et offrirent l'holocauste de chaque jour selon le nombre voulu, d'après l'ordonnance, chaque jour comme le jour l'exigeait, ⁵ et après cela, l'holocauste perpétuel et celui des nouvelles lunes, ainsi que ceux de toutes les solennités de l'Eternel, et ceux de quiconque faisait des offrandes volontaires à l'Eternel. ⁶ Depuis le premier jour du septième mois ils avaient commencé à offrir des holocaustes à l'Eternel. Or les fondements du temple de l'Eternel n'étaient pas encore posés ; ⁷ et ils donnèrent de l'argent aux tailleurs de pierres et aux charpentiers, ainsi que des vivres, des boissons et de l'huile aux Sidoniens et aux Tyriens pour qu'ils amenassent du bois de cèdre du Liban à la mer de Japho, selon l'autorisation que leur avait donnée Cyrus, roi de Perse.
   ⁸ Et la deuxième année depuis leur arrivée à la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem, au deuxième mois, Zorobabel, fils de Séalthiel, et Josué, fils de Jotsadak, et le reste de leurs frères, les sacrificateurs et les Lévites, et tous ceux qui étaient venus de la captivité à Jérusalem, se mirent à l'oeuvre, et établirent les Lévites depuis l'âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, pour diriger les travaux de la maison de l'Eternel ; ⁹ et Josué, ses fils et ses frères, Kadmiel et ses fils, fils de Juda, se présentèrent comme un seul homme pour diriger ceux qui travaillaient à la maison de Dieu ; les fils de Hénadad, leurs fils et leurs frères, Lévites, [firent de même]. ¹⁰ Et lorsque ceux qui bâtissaient posèrent les fondements du temple de l'Eternel, on fit assister les sacrificateurs en costume avec des trompettes, ainsi que les Lévites, fils d'Asaph, avec des cymbales, pour louer l'Eternel d'après la manière établie par David, roi d'Israël. ¹¹ Et ils s'entre-répondaient : Louez et célébrez l'Eternel, car il est bon, car sa miséricorde dure à toujours sur Israël. Et tout le peuple poussait de grands cris, louant l'Eternel, parce que l'on fondait la maison de l'Eternel. ¹² Et beaucoup de sacrificateurs et de Lévites et de chefs de famille, les vieillards qui avaient vu la première maison, pleuraient à haute voix en voyant fonder celle-ci. Et beaucoup élevaient la voix en poussant des cris de joie, ¹³ et l'on ne pouvait distinguer le bruit des cris de joie d'avec celui des pleurs du peuple, car le peuple poussait de grands cris, et le bruit s'en entendait fort loin.

Esdras 4

   ¹ Et les ennemis de Juda et de Benjamin apprirent que les exilés bâtissaient un temple à l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, ² et ils s'approchèrent de Zorobabel et des chefs de famille et leur dirent : Nous bâtirons avec vous, car comme vous nous invoquerons votre Dieu, bien que nous ne lui ayons pas offert de sacrifices depuis le temps d'Asarhaddon, roi d'Assyrie, qui nous a fait monter ici. ³ Mais Zorobabel et Josué et les autres chefs de famille d'Israël leur dirent : Ce n'est pas à vous et à nous de bâtir une maison à notre Dieu, car nous seuls nous bâtirons, pour l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, comme nous l'a ordonné le roi Cyrus, roi de Perse. ⁴ Et les gens du pays se mirent à décourager le peuple de Juda et à l'inquiéter quand il bâtissait, ⁵ et à gagner à prix d'argent des conseillers pour faire échouer son entreprise. Il en fut ainsi pendant tout le temps de Cyrus, roi de Perse, et jusqu'au règne de Darius, roi de Perse.
   ⁶ Et sous le règne d'Assuérus, au commencement de son règne, ils écrivirent une accusation contre les habitants de Juda et de Jérusalem. ⁷ Et du temps d'Artaxerxès, Bischlam, Mithrédath, Tabéel et leurs collègues écrivirent à Artaxerxès, roi de Perse. La lettre est écrite en araméen et traduite en araméen. ⁸ Réhum, conseiller, et Simsaï, secrétaire, écrivirent une lettre au sujet de Jérusalem, au roi Artaxerxès, en ces termes : ⁹ A cette date : Réhum, conseiller, et Simsaï, secrétaire, et leurs collègues de Dina, d'Apharsathac, de Tharpéla, d'Apharas, d'Erec, de Babel, de Suse, de Déha, d'Elam, ¹⁰ et le reste des peuples que le grand et illustre Osnappar a déportés et fait habiter dans la ville de Samarie et autres lieux, au-delà du fleuve, etc.
   ¹¹ Voici la copie de la lettre qu'ils envoyèrent au roi Artaxerxès :
Tes serviteurs, hommes d'au-delà du fleuve, etc. ¹² Que le roi sache que les Juifs montés de chez toi pour venir chez nous sont venus à Jérusalem, qu'ils bâtissent la ville remuante et méchante, en achèvent les murs et en restaurent les fondements. ¹³ Que le roi sache donc que, si cette ville se rebâtit, et si ses murs s'achèvent, ils ne paieront ni tribut, ni accise, ni droit de passage, et qu'ainsi elle fera tort aux rois. ¹⁴ Puis donc que nous mangeons le sel du palais et qu'il ne nous paraît pas convenable de voir causer du dommage au roi, nous envoyons au roi ce message, et lui faisons savoir ¹⁵ qu'on fasse des recherches dans le livre des Mémoires de tes pères ; et tu trouveras et verras dans le livre des Mémoires que cette ville est une ville remuante, causant du dommage aux rois et aux provinces, et qu'on s'y est orgueilleusement livré à la révolte dès les temps anciens ; c'est pourquoi cette ville a été détruite. ¹⁶ Nous faisons savoir au roi que, si cette ville est rebâtie et ses murs achevés, il en résultera que, de ce côté du fleuve, tu n'auras plus de possession.
   ¹⁷ Le roi envoya un ordre à Réhum, conseiller, et à Simsaï, secrétaire, et au reste de leurs collègues demeurant à Samarie et autres lieux au-delà du fleuve : Salut, etc. ¹⁸ La lettre que vous nous avez envoyée a été lue exactement devant moi, ¹⁹ et de ma part ordre a été donné de faire des recherches, et on a trouvé que cette ville, dès les temps anciens, s'est soulevée contre les rois, et qu'on s'y est livré à la sédition et à la révolte. ²⁰ Et des rois puissants ont existé à Jérusalem et ont régné sur tout ce qui se trouve au-delà du fleuve ; on leur a payé tribut, accise et droit de passage. ²¹ Maintenant donnez des ordres pour empêcher ces gens, et que cette ville ne se rebâtisse pas sans un ordre de ma part. ²² Gardez-vous de manquer à faire cela, afin que le dommage ne s'accroisse pas au préjudice des rois. ²³ Alors, dès que la copie de la lettre du roi Artaxerxès eut été lue devant Réhum, Simsaï, le secrétaire, et leurs collègues, ils se rendirent en hâte à Jérusalem vers les Juifs, et les firent cesser par force et par violence. ²⁴ Alors l'ouvrage de la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem cessa, et il fut interrompu jusqu'à la deuxième année du règne de Darius, roi de Perse.

   ¹ And when the seventh month was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem. ² Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings thereon, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God. ³ And they set the altar upon his bases; for fear was upon them because of the people of those countries: and they offered burnt offerings thereon unto the LORD, even burnt offerings morning and evening. ⁴ They kept also the feast of tabernacles, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number, according to the custom, as the duty of every day required; ⁵ And afterward offered the continual burnt offering, both of the new moons, and of all the set feasts of the LORD that were consecrated, and of every one that willingly offered a freewill offering unto the LORD. ⁶ From the first day of the seventh month began they to offer burnt offerings unto the LORD. But the foundation of the temple of the LORD was not yet laid. ⁷ They gave money also unto the masons, and to the carpenters; and meat, and drink, and oil, unto them of Zidon, and to them of Tyre, to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea of Joppa, according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia.
   ⁸ Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, began Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem; and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of the LORD. ⁹ Then stood Jeshua with his sons and his brethren, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together, to set forward the workmen in the house of God: the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their brethren the Levites. ¹⁰ And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise the LORD, after the ordinance of David king of Israel. ¹¹ And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. ¹² But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy: ¹³ So that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people: for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off.

   ¹ Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel; ² Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither. ³ But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us. ⁴ Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building, ⁵ And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
   ⁶ And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem. ⁷ And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue. ⁸ Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort: ⁹ Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites, ¹⁰ And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnapper brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time. ¹¹ This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time. ¹² Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations. ¹³ Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings. ¹⁴ Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king; ¹⁵ That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed. ¹⁶ We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
   ¹⁷ Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time. ¹⁸ The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me. ¹⁹ And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein. ²⁰ There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them. ²¹ Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me. ²² Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings? ²³ Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power. ²⁴ Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
