   ¹ Et après ces choses, sous le règne d'Artaxerxès, roi de Perse, Esdras, fils de Séraïa, fils d'Azaria, fils de Hilkija, ² fils de Sallum, fils de Tsadok, fils d'Ahitub, ³ fils d'Amaria, fils d'Azaria, fils de Mérajoth, ⁴ fils de Zérachia, fils d'Uzzi, fils de Bukki, ⁵ fils d'Abisua, fils de Phinées, fils d'Eléazar, fils d'Aaron, le souverain sacrificateur, ⁶ cet Esdras monta de Babylone. C'était un scribe versé dans la loi de Moïse qu'a donnée l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël. Et comme la main de l'Eternel son Dieu était sur lui, le roi lui donna tout ce qu'il demandait. ⁷ Et quelques-uns des fils d'Israël et quelques-uns des sacrificateurs, des Lévites, des chantres, des portiers et des Néthiniens, montèrent à Jérusalem, la septième année du roi Artaxerxès. ⁸ Et il arriva à Jérusalem au cinquième mois ; c'était la septième année [du règne] du roi. ⁹ En effet, ce fut le premier jour du premier mois qu'il partit de Babylone, et au premier jour du cinquième mois, la bonne main de son Dieu étant sur lui, il arrivait à Jérusalem. ¹⁰ Car Esdras avait appliqué son coeur à étudier la loi de l'Eternel et à la mettre en pratique, et à enseigner en Israël statuts et ordonnances.
   ¹¹ Et voici la copie de la lettre que le roi Artaxerxès avait remise à Esdras le sacrificateur [et] le scribe, scribe instruit dans les ordonnances de l'Eternel et dans les statuts prescrits à Israël : ¹² Artaxerxès, roi des rois, à Esdras, sacrificateur et scribe, connaissant bien la loi du Dieu des cieux, etc. ¹³ De ma part ordre est donné de laisser aller quiconque dans mon royaume, faisant partie du peuple d'Israël, de ses sacrificateurs et de ses Lévites, est disposé à aller avec toi à Jérusalem, ¹⁴ puisque tu es envoyé de la part du roi et de ses sept conseillers pour faire une enquête sur Juda et Jérusalem d'après la loi de ton Dieu qui est entre tes mains, ¹⁵ et pour porter l'argent et l'or que le roi et ses conseillers ont volontairement donnés au Dieu d'Israël, dont la demeure est à Jérusalem, ¹⁶ ainsi que tout l'argent et l'or que tu obtiendras dans toute la province de Babylone, et les dons volontaires faits par le peuple et les sacrificateurs pour la maison de leur Dieu à Jérusalem. ¹⁷ C'est pouquoi tu auras soin d'acheter avec cet argent des taureaux, des béliers, des agneaux, ainsi que leurs oblations et leurs libations, et tu les offriras sur l'autel de la maison de votre Dieu, à Jérusalem. ¹⁸ Et avec le reste de l'argent et de l'or vous ferez ce que vous trouverez convenable, toi et tes frères, en vous conformant à la volonté de votre Dieu. ¹⁹ Et quant aux ustensiles qui te sont remis pour le culte de la maison de ton Dieu, dépose-les devant le Dieu de Jérusalem. ²⁰ Et quant aux autres dépenses que tu auras à faire au sujet de la maison de ton Dieu, tu en tireras le montant de la maison des trésors du roi. ²¹ Et par moi, le roi Artaxerxès, ordre est donné à tous les trésoriers de delà le fleuve, de livrer ponctuellement à Esdras, sacrificateur et scribe, connaissant la loi du Dieu des cieux, tout ce qu'il vous demandera, ²² jusqu'à cent talents d'argent, cent cors de froment, cent baths de vin, cent baths d'huile, et du sel en quantité illimitée. ²³ Que tout ce qui est ordonné par le Dieu des cieux se fasse exactement pour la maison du Dieu des cieux, afin qu'il n'y ait pas courroux sur le royaume du roi et de ses fils. ²⁴ Et nous vous faisons savoir qu'il ne peut être levé ni tribut, ni accise, ni droit de passage, sur aucun des sacrificateurs, des Lévites, des chantres, des portiers, des Néthiniens et des serviteurs de cette maison de Dieu. ²⁵ Et toi, Esdras, selon la sagesse de ton Dieu que tu possèdes, établis des juges et des magistrats qui rendent la justice à tout le peuple qui est au-delà du fleuve, à tous ceux qui connaissent les lois de ton Dieu, et celui qui ne les connaît pas, instruis-le. ²⁶ Et quiconque n'observera pas la loi de ton Dieu et la loi du roi, vous ferez de lui rigoureuse justice, par mort ou bannissement, ou amende ou prison.
   ²⁷ Béni soit l'Eternel, Dieu de nos pères, qui a mis ainsi au coeur du roi d'honorer la maison de l'Eternel à Jérusalem, ²⁸ et m'a fait obtenir la bienveillance du roi, de ses conseillers et de tous les princes puissants du roi ! Et je me fortifiai, la main de l'Eternel mon Dieu étant sur moi, et je rassemblai d'Israël des chefs pour monter avec moi.

Esdras 8

   ¹ Et voici les chefs des maisons patriarcales et le dénombrement de ceux qui montèrent avec moi de Babylone, sous le règne du roi Artaxerxès. ² Des fils de Phinées, Guersom ; des fils d'Ithamar, Daniel ; des fils de David, Hattusch, des fils de Sécania. ³ Des fils de Paréos, Zacharie ; et avec lui furent enregistrés, en fait de mâles, cent cinquante hommes. ⁴ Des fils de Pahath-Moab, Eljoénaï, fils de Zérachia, et avec lui deux cents mâles ; ⁵ des fils de Sécania, le fils de Jahaziel, et avec lui trois cents mâles ; ⁶ et des fils d'Adin, Ebed, fils de Jonathan, et avec lui cinquante mâles ; ⁷ et des fils d'Elam, Esaïe, fils d'Athalia, et avec lui soixante et dix mâles ; ⁸ et des fils de Séphatia, Zébadia, fils de Micaël, et avec lui quatre-vingts mâles. ⁹ Des fils de Joab, Abadia, fils de Jéhiel, et avec lui deux cent dix-huit mâles ; ¹⁰ et des fils de Sélomith, le fils de Josiphéia, et avec lui cent soixante mâles ; ¹¹ et des fils de Bébaï, Zacharie, fils de Bébaï, et avec lui vingt-huit mâles ; ¹² et des fils de Azgad, Johanan, fils de Hakkatan, et avec lui cent dix mâles ; ¹³ et des fils d'Adonikam, les derniers, dont voici les noms : Eliphélet, Jéiël et Sémaïa, et avec eux soixante mâles ; ¹⁴ et des fils de Bigvaï, Uthaï et Zabbud, et avec eux soixante et dix mâles. ¹⁵ Et je les rassemblai près du fleuve qui coule vers Ahava, et nous campâmes là trois jours. Et je considérai avec attention le peuple et les sacrificateurs, et ne trouvai là aucun des fils de Lévi. ¹⁶ Et j'envoyai chercher Eliézer, Ariel, Sémaïa, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zacharie, Mésullam, chefs, et Jojarib et Elnathan, hommes intelligents, ¹⁷ et je les dépêchai vers Iddo, qui était chef dans la localité de Casiphéia, et je mis dans leur bouche ce qu'ils devaient dire à Iddo [et à] son frère, les Néthuniens dans la localité de Casiphéia, pour nous amener des serviteurs pour la maison de notre Dieu. ¹⁸ Et, comme la bonne main de notre Dieu était sur nous, ils nous amenèrent un homme intelligent d'entre les fils de Machli, fils de Lévi, fils d'Israël, et Sérébia, ainsi que ses fils et ses frères, au nombre de dix-huit ; ¹⁹ de plus Hasabia, et avec lui Esaïe, d'entre les fils de Mérari, ainsi que ses frères et ses fils, au nombre de vingt, ²⁰ et d'entre les Néthiniens, que David et les chefs avaient mis au service des Lévites, deux cent vingt Néthiniens, tous désignés par leurs noms.
   ²¹ Et là, près du fleuve Abava, je publiai un jeûne pour nous humilier devant notre Dieu, pour implorer de lui un heureux voyage pour nous, pour nos petits enfants, et pour tout notre avoir ; ²² car j'avais honte de demander au roi des gens armés et des cavaliers pour nous protéger contre l'ennemi pendant la route, car nous avions dit au roi : La main de notre Dieu est étendue sur tous ceux qui le cherchent pour leur faire du bien, et sa force et sa colère sont contre tous ceux qui l'abandonnent. ²³ Et nous jeûnâmes et invoquâmes notre Dieu à ce sujet et il se laissa fléchir.
   ²⁴ Et parmi les chefs des sacrificateurs, j'en mis à part douze, puis Sérébia, Hasabia, et avec eux dix hommes d'entre leurs frères. ²⁵ Et je pesai pour le leur remettre l'argent, l'or et les ustensiles donnés en offrande pour la maison de notre Dieu par le roi, ses conseillers et ses chefs, et par tout Israël qui se trouvait là. ²⁶ Et je pesai et leur remis six cent cinquante talents d'argent, des objets d'argent d'un poids de cent talents, et cent talents d'or, ²⁷ et vingt coupes d'or, valant mille dariques, et deux vases d'airain d'un beau doré, estimés à l'égal de l'or, ²⁸ et je leur dis : Vous êtes consacrés à l'Eternel, et les ustensiles sont chose sainte, et l'argent et l'or sont une offrande volontaire à l'Eternel, Dieu de vos pères ; ²⁹ soyez vigilants, et gardez cela jusqu'à ce que vous le pesiez devant les chefs des sacrificateurs, les Lévites et les chefs de famille d'Israël, à Jérusalem, dans les chambres de la maison de l'Eternel. ³⁰ Et les sacrificateurs et les Lévites reçurent l'argent, l'or et les ustensiles pesés, pour les porter à Jérusalem dans la maison de notre Dieu.
   ³¹ Et nous partîmes du fleuve d'Ahava le douzième jour du premier mois pour aller à Jérusalem, et la main de notre Dieu fut sur nous, et il nous délivra de la main de l'ennemi et de toute embûche pendant la route, ³² et nous arrivâmes à Jérusalem, et nous nous y reposâmes trois jours. ³³ Et le quatrième jour nous pesâmes l'argent, l'or et les ustensiles dans la maison de notre Dieu, et les remîmes à Mérémoth, fils d'Urie, le sacrificateur, et avec lui il y avait Eléazar, fils de Phinées, et avec eux les Lévites Jozabad, fils de Josué, et Noadia, fils de Binnui, ³⁴ d'après le nombre et le poids du tout, et alors on mit par écrit le poids total. ³⁵ Les exilés, revenus de la captivité, offrirent des holocaustes au Dieu d'Israël, douze taureaux pour tout Israël, quatre-vingt-seize béliers, soixante-dix-sept brebis, et comme sacrifice pour le péché douze boucs, le tout en holocauste à l'Eternel ; ³⁶ et ils transmirent les ordres du roi aux satrapes du roi et aux gouverneurs d'au-delà du fleuve, et ceux-ci favorisèrent le peuple et la maison de Dieu.

Esdras 9

   ¹ Et quand ces choses furent terminées, les chefs s'approchèrent de moi, en disant : Le peuple d'Israël, les sacrificateurs et les Lévites ne se sont pas séparés des peuples des pays étrangers ; ils imitent les abominations des Cananéens, des Héthiens, des Phéréziens, des Jébusiens, des Ammonites, des Moabites, des Egyptiens et des Amorrhéens, ² car ils ont pris de leurs filles pour eux et pour leurs fils, et ont mêlé la race sainte avec les peuples des [autres] pays, et la main des chefs et des principaux a été la première à [commettre] cette infidélité. ³ Et lorsque j'entendis cela, je déchirai mon vêtement et mon manteau, et je m'arrachai les cheveux et la barbe, et je m'assis désolé. ⁴ Et tous ceux qui tremblaient aux paroles du Dieu d'Israël s'assemblèrent vers moi à cause de l'infidélité des exilés, et moi je restai assis, désolé, jusqu'au temps de l'oblation du soir ; ⁵ et au moment de l'oblation du soir, je me levai de mon humiliation en déchirant mon vêtement et mon manteau, je me mis à genoux, et j'étendis mes mains vers l'Eternel, mon Dieu, ⁶ et dis : Mon Dieu, j'ai honte et je suis [trop] confus pour lever, ô mon Dieu, ma face vers toi ; car nos iniquités se sont multipliées par-dessus nos têtes, et notre culpabilité a grandi jusqu'aux cieux. ⁷ Depuis les jours de nos pères jusqu'aujourd'hui, nous sommes extrêmement coupables, et à cause de nos iniquités nous avons été livrés, nous, nos rois, nos sacrificateurs, aux rois des pays étrangers, à l'épée, à la captivité, au pillage et à la confusion de face, comme nous le sommes aujourd'hui. ⁸ Et maintenant, depuis un instant, nous avons éprouvé la pitié de l'Eternel, notre Dieu ; il nous a conservé des réchappés et nous a donné un clou dans le lieu de sa sainteté, afin que notre Dieu éclairât nos yeux et nous redonnât un peu de vie dans notre esclavage ; ⁹ car nous sommes esclaves, et dans notre esclavage notre Dieu ne nous a pas abandonnés, et a étendu sur nous sa grâce devant les rois de Perse, nous donnant assez de vie pour bâtir la maison de notre Dieu et en relever les ruines, et nous donnant une retraite dans Juda et en Jérusalem. ¹⁰ Et maintenant, que dirons-nous, ô notre Dieu, après cela ? Car nous avons abandonné tes commandements, ¹¹ que tu nous avais prescrits par le ministère de tes serviteurs les prophètes, en disant : Le pays dans lequel vous entrez pour le posséder est un pays souillé par la souillure des peuples des pays étrangers ; ils l'ont rempli de leur impureté d'un bout à l'autre ; ¹² et maintenant, ne donnez point vos filles à leurs fils, et ne prenez point leurs filles pour vos fils, et n'ayez jamais souci de leur prospérité et de leur bien, afin que vous deveniez forts, et que vous mangiez ce qu'il y a de mieux dans le pays, et que vous laissiez en héritage perpétuel ce pays à vos fils. ¹³ Et après tout ce qui est venu sur nous, à cause de nos mauvaises oeuvres et de notre grande culpabilité (car toi, ô notre Dieu, tu es resté, dans ta punition, au-dessous de ce que méritaient nos iniquités, et tu nous as conservé ces réchappés que voici), ¹⁴ recommencerions-nous à violer tes commandements et à nous allier par mariage à ces peuples abominables ? Ta colère ne s'enflammerait-elle pas contre nous jusqu'à nous consumer, sans laisser ni reste, ni réchappés ? ¹⁵ Eternel, Dieu d'Israël, tu es juste, car nous sommes un reste de réchappés, comme on le voit aujourd'hui. Nous voici devant toi dans notre culpabilité, car nous ne saurions subsister devant ta face à cause de cela.

Esdras 10

   ¹ Et comme Esdras priait et faisait cette confession, pleurant et s'étant jeté à terre devant la maison de Dieu, une très grande assemblée d'Israël, hommes, femmes et enfants, se réunit vers lui, car le peuple pleurait beaucoup. ² Et Sécania, fils de Jéhiel, des fils d'Elam, prit la parole et dit à Esdras : Pour nous, nous avons été infidèles envers notre Dieu, en épousant des femmes étrangères d'entre les peuples du pays. Et maintenant il reste une espérance pour Israël à ce sujet. ³ Et maintenant traitons alliance avec notre Dieu pour renvoyer toutes ces femmes et ce qui est né d'elles, selon l'avis de mon seigneur et de ceux qui tremblent aux commandements de notre Dieu ; et qu'il soit fait selon la loi ! ⁴ Lève-toi, car cette affaire te regarde, et nous sommes avec toi ; prends courage et agis. ⁵ Et Esdras se leva, et fit jurer aux chefs des sacrificateurs, des Lévites et de tout Israël, d'agir selon ce qui venait d'être dit, et ils le jurèrent.
   ⁶ Et Esdras se leva de devant la maison de Dieu et alla dans la chambre de Johanan, fils d'Eliasib ; il y alla et ne mangea point de pain et ne but point d'eau, parce qu'il menait deuil sur l'infidélité des exilés. ⁷ Et on fit publier dans Juda et dans Jérusalem, que tous les exilés eussent à se rassembler à Jérusalem. ⁸ Quiconque ne s'y rendrait pas dans les trois jours, selon l'avis des chefs et des Anciens, tous ses biens seraient confisqués, et lui-même serait exclu de l'assemblée des exilés. ⁹ Et tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin se rassemblèrent à Jérusalem dans les trois jours ; c'était au neuvième mois, le vingtième jour du mois. Tout le peuple se tint sur la place de la maison de Dieu, tremblant à cause de cette affaire et à cause des pluies. ¹⁰ Et Esdras, le sacrificateur, se leva et leur dit : Vous avez commis une infidélité en prenant des femmes étrangères pour ajouter à la culpabilité d'Israël. ¹¹ Et maintenant rendez hommage à l'Eternel, le Dieu de vos pères, et faites ce qui lui est agréable, et séparez-vous des peuples du pays et des femmes étrangères. ¹² Et toute l'assemblée répondit et dit d'une voix forte : Oui, c'est comme tu le dis que nous devons faire. ¹³ Mais le peuple est nombreux et c'est la saison des pluies, et il n'est pas possible de rester dehors, et l'oeuvre à faire n'est pas d'un jour, ni de deux jours, car nous avons été nombreux à commettre ce péché. ¹⁴ Que nos chefs se présentent pour toute l'assemblée, et que tous ceux qui dans nos villes ont épousé des femmes étrangères, viennent à des époques fixées et avec eux les Anciens et les juges de chaque ville, jusqu'à ce que nous ayons détourné de dessus nous l'ardeur de la colère de notre Dieu pour ce qui est de cette affaire.
   ¹⁵ Jonathan, fils d'Asaël, et Jachzia, fils de Thikva, furent seuls à s'opposer à ce projet, et Mésullam et Sabthaï, Lévites, les appuyèrent. ¹⁶ Et les exilés firent ainsi, et l'on mit à part Esdras, le sacrificateur, [et] des hommes, chefs de maisons patriarcales selon les maisons de leurs pères, et tous désignés par leurs noms, et ils siégèrent le premier jour du dixième mois pour s'occuper de cette affaire ; ¹⁷ et le premier jour du premier mois ils en finirent avec tous les hommes qui avaient pris des femmes étrangères. ¹⁸ Et parmi les fils des sacrificateurs qui avaient pris des femmes étrangères, parmi les fils de Josué, fils de Jotsadak, et parmi les fils de ses frères, l'on trouva Maaséia et Eliézer, Jarib et Guédalia. ¹⁹ Et ils s'engagèrent, en donnant la main, à renvoyer leurs femmes, et ils furent condamnés à offrir un bélier pour leur faute. ²⁰ Et des enfants d'Immer, Hanani et Zébadia ; ²¹ et des fils de Harim, Maaséia et Elie et Séinaïa et Jéhiel et Ozias ; ²² et des fils de Paschur, Eljoénaï, Maaséia, Ismaël, Néthanéel, Jozabad et Eléasar. ²³ Et des Lévites, Jozabad et Siméi et Kélaïa, qui est Kélita, Péthachia, Juda et Eliézer. ²⁴ Et des chantres, Eliasib ; et des portiers, Sallum et Télem et Uri. ²⁵ Et d'Israël, des fils de Paréos, Ramia et Izzija et Malkija et Mijamin et Eléazar et Malkija et Bénaïa ; ²⁶ et des fils d'Elam, Matthania, Zacharie et Jéhiel et Abdi et Jérémoth et Elie ; ²⁷ et des fils de Zatthu, Eljoénaï, Eliasib, Matthania et Jérémoth et Zabad et Aziza ; ²⁸ et des fils de Bébaï, Johanan, Hanania, Zabbaï, Athlaï ; ²⁹ et des fils de Bani, Mésullam, Malluc et Adaïa, Jaschub et Séal, Jérémoth ; ³⁰ et des fils de Pahath-Moab, Adna et Kélal, Bénaïa, Maaséia, Matthania, Betsaléel et Binnui et Manassé ; ³¹ et les fils de Harim, Eliézer, Jissija, Malkija, Sémaïa, Siméon, ³² Benjamin, Malluc, Sémaria. ³³ Des fils de Hasum, Mathnaï, Matthatha, Zabad, Eliphélet, Jérémaï, Manassé, Siméi. ³⁴ Des fils de Bani, Maadaï, Amram et Uel, ³⁵ Bénaïa, Bédia, Kéluhi, ³⁶ Vania, Mérémoth, Eliasib, ³⁷ Matthania, Mathnaï et Jaaso ³⁸ et Bani et Binnui, Siméi ³⁹ et Sélémia et Nathan et Adaïa ⁴⁰ Macnadbaï, Sasaï, Saraï, ⁴¹ Azaréel et Sélémia, Sémaria, ⁴² Sallum, Amaria, Joseph. ⁴³ Des fils de Nébo, Jéiel, Matthithia, Zabad, Zébina, Jiddo et Joël, Bénaïa. ⁴⁴ Tous ces hommes avaient pris des femmes étrangères, et il y en avait d'entre eux qui avaient eu des enfants d'elles.

   ¹ Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah, ² The son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub, ³ The son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth, ⁴ The son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki, ⁵ The son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest: ⁶ This Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him. ⁷ And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the Nethinims, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king. ⁸ And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king. ⁹ For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him. ¹⁰ For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.
   ¹¹ Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest, the scribe, even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD, and of his statutes to Israel. ¹² Artaxerxes, king of kings, unto Ezra the priest, a scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect peace, and at such a time. ¹³ I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee. ¹⁴ Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king, and of his seven counsellors, to enquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand; ¹⁵ And to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem, ¹⁶ And all the silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offering of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem: ¹⁷ That thou mayest buy speedily with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their meat offerings and their drink offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem. ¹⁸ And whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do after the will of your God. ¹⁹ The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God, those deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem. ²⁰ And whatsoever more shall be needful for the house of thy God, which thou shalt have occasion to bestow, bestow it out of the king's treasure house. ²¹ And I, even I Artaxerxes the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river, that whatsoever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done speedily, ²² Unto an hundred talents of silver, and to an hundred measures of wheat, and to an hundred baths of wine, and to an hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much. ²³ Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons? ²⁴ Also we certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, singers, porters, Nethinims, or ministers of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them. ²⁵ And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not. ²⁶ And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.
   ²⁷ Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers, which hath put such a thing as this in the king's heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem: ²⁸ And hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king's mighty princes. And I was strengthened as the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.

   ¹ These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king. ² Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of Ithamar; Daniel: of the sons of David; Hattush. ³ Of the sons of Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh; Zechariah: and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males an hundred and fifty. ⁴ Of the sons of Pahathmoab; Elihoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males. ⁵ Of the sons of Shechaniah; the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males. ⁶ Of the sons also of Adin; Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males. ⁷ And of the sons of Elam; Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy males. ⁸ And of the sons of Shephatiah; Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him fourscore males. ⁹ Of the sons of Joab; Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen males. ¹⁰ And of the sons of Shelomith; the son of Josiphiah, and with him an hundred and threescore males. ¹¹ And of the sons of Bebai; Zechariah the son of Bebai, and with him twenty and eight males. ¹² And of the sons of Azgad; Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him an hundred and ten males. ¹³ And of the last sons of Adonikam, whose names are these, Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them threescore males. ¹⁴ Of the sons also of Bigvai; Uthai, and Zabbud, and with them seventy males. ¹⁵ And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava; and there abode we in tents three days: and I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi. ¹⁶ Then sent I for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, and for Elnathan, and for Jarib, and for Elnathan, and for Nathan, and for Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib, and for Elnathan, men of understanding. ¹⁷ And I sent them with commandment unto Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia, and I told them what they should say unto Iddo, and to his brethren the Nethinims, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring unto us ministers for the house of our God. ¹⁸ And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen; ¹⁹ And Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brethren and their sons, twenty; ²⁰ Also of the Nethinims, whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinims: all of them were expressed by name.
   ²¹ Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. ²² For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him. ²³ So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.
   ²⁴ Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them, ²⁵ And weighed unto them the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, even the offering of the house of our God, which the king, and his counsellors, and his lords, and all Israel there present, had offered: ²⁶ I even weighed unto their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels an hundred talents, and of gold an hundred talents; ²⁷ Also twenty basons of gold, of a thousand drams; and two vessels of fine copper, precious as gold. ²⁸ And I said unto them, Ye are holy unto the LORD; the vessels are holy also; and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering unto the LORD God of your fathers. ²⁹ Watch ye, and keep them, until ye weigh them before the chief of the priests and the Levites, and chief of the fathers of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD. ³⁰ So took the priests and the Levites the weight of the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem unto the house of our God.
   ³¹ Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way. ³² And we came to Jerusalem, and abode there three days. ³³ Now on the fourth day was the silver and the gold and the vessels weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites; ³⁴ By number and by weight of every one: and all the weight was written at that time. ³⁵ Also the children of those that had been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel, ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the LORD. ³⁶ And they delivered the king's commissions unto the king's lieutenants, and to the governors on this side the river: and they furthered the people, and the house of God.

Esdras 9

   ¹ Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. ² For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass. ³ And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied. ⁴ Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the transgression of those that had been carried away; and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice.
   ⁵ And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God, ⁶ And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens. ⁷ Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day. ⁸ And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage. ⁹ For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem. ¹⁰ And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments, ¹¹ Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness. ¹² Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever. ¹³ And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this; ¹⁴ Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping? ¹⁵ O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.

Esdras 10

   ¹ Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore. ² And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing. ³ Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law. ⁴ Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it. ⁵ Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this word. And they sware.
   ⁶ Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away. ⁷ And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem; ⁸ And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away. ⁹ Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain. ¹⁰ And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel. ¹¹ Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives. ¹² Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do. ¹³ But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing. ¹⁴ Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.
   ¹⁵ Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah were employed about this matter: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them. ¹⁶ And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. ¹⁷ And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month. ¹⁸ And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken strange wives: namely, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren; Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah. ¹⁹ And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass. ²⁰ And of the sons of Immer; Hanani, and Zebadiah. ²¹ And of the sons of Harim; Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah. ²² And of the sons of Pashur; Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah. ²³ Also of the Levites; Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah, (the same is Kelita,) Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer. ²⁴ Of the singers also; Eliashib: and of the porters; Shallum, and Telem, and Uri. ²⁵ Moreover of Israel: of the sons of Parosh; Ramiah, and Jeziah, and Malchiah, and Miamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah. ²⁶ And of the sons of Elam; Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Eliah. ²⁷ And of the sons of Zattu; Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza. ²⁸ Of the sons also of Bebai; Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai. ²⁹ And of the sons of Bani; Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, and Ramoth. ³⁰ And of the sons of Pahathmoab; Adna, and Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezaleel, and Binnui, and Manasseh. ³¹ And of the sons of Harim; Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchiah, Shemaiah, Shimeon, ³² Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah. ³³ Of the sons of Hashum; Mattenai, Mattathah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei. ³⁴ Of the sons of Bani; Maadai, Amram, and Uel, ³⁵ Benaiah, Bedeiah, Chelluh, ³⁶ Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib, ³⁷ Mattaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasau, ³⁸ And Bani, and Binnui, Shimei, ³⁹ And Shelemiah, and Nathan, and Adaiah, ⁴⁰ Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai, ⁴¹ Azareel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah, ⁴² Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph. ⁴³ Of the sons of Nebo; Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jadau, and Joel, Benaiah. ⁴⁴ All these had taken strange wives: and some of them had wives by whom they had children.
