Jr 1-5 (King James)

   ¹ The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin: ² To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. ³ It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.
   ⁴ Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, ⁵ Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. ⁶ Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. ⁷ But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. ⁸ Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD. ⁹ Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. ¹⁰ See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.
   ¹¹ Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree. ¹² Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it. ¹³ And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north. ¹⁴ Then the LORD said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land. ¹⁵ For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah. ¹⁶ And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands. ¹⁷ Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them. ¹⁸ For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land. ¹⁹ And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.

   ¹ Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ² Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown. ³ Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD. ⁴ Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel: ⁵ Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain? ⁶ Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt? ⁷ And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination. ⁸ The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.
   ⁹ Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children's children will I plead. ¹⁰ For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing. ¹¹ Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. ¹² Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD. ¹³ For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
   ¹⁴ Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled? ¹⁵ The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant. ¹⁶ Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head. ¹⁷ Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way? ¹⁸ And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river? ¹⁹ Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
   ²⁰ For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot. ²¹ Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me? ²² For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD. ²³ How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways; ²⁴ A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her. ²⁵ Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go. ²⁶ As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets. ²⁷ Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us. ²⁸ But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.
   ²⁹ Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD. ³⁰ In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion. ³¹ O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee? ³² Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number. ³³ Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways. ³⁴ Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these. ³⁵ Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned. ³⁶ Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria. ³⁷ Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.

   ¹ They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man's, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD. ² Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness. ³ Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore's forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed. ⁴ Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth? ⁵ Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.
   ⁶ The LORD said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot. ⁷ And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. ⁸ And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. ⁹ And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks. ¹⁰ And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD. ¹¹ And the LORD said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah.
   ¹² Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever. ¹³ Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD. ¹⁴ Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion: ¹⁵ And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding. ¹⁶ And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more. ¹⁷ At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart. ¹⁸ In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers. ¹⁹ But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.
   ²⁰ Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD. ²¹ A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the LORD their God. ²² Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God. ²³ Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel. ²⁴ For shame hath devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. ²⁵ We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.

Jérémie 4

   ¹ If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith the LORD, return unto me: and if thou wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not remove. ² And thou shalt swear, The LORD liveth, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.
   ³ For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns. ⁴ Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.
   ⁵ Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, Blow ye the trumpet in the land: cry, gather together, and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the defenced cities. ⁶ Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction. ⁷ The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant. ⁸ For this gird you with sackcloth, lament and howl: for the fierce anger of the LORD is not turned back from us. ⁹ And it shall come to pass at that day, saith the LORD, that the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder. ¹⁰ Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! surely thou hast greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the soul. ¹¹ At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse, ¹² Even a full wind from those places shall come unto me: now also will I give sentence against them. ¹³ Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled. ¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee? ¹⁵ For a voice declareth from Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim. ¹⁶ Make ye mention to the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah. ¹⁷ As keepers of a field, are they against her round about; because she hath been rebellious against me, saith the LORD. ¹⁸ Thy way and thy doings have procured these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reacheth unto thine heart.
   ¹⁹ My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war. ²⁰ Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled: suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment. ²¹ How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet? ²² For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge. ²³ I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. ²⁴ I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. ²⁵ I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. ²⁶ I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger. ²⁷ For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end. ²⁸ For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black; because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it. ²⁹ The whole city shall flee for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen; they shall go into thickets, and climb up upon the rocks: every city shall be forsaken, and not a man dwell therein. ³⁰ And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life. ³¹ For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands, saying, Woe is me now! for my soul is wearied because of murderers.

Jérémie 5

   ¹ Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it. ² And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely. ³ O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return. ⁴ Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God. ⁵ I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds. ⁶ Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased. ⁷ How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots' houses. ⁸ They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour's wife. ⁹ Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
   ¹⁰ Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD's. ¹¹ For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD. ¹² They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine: ¹³ And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them. ¹⁴ Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them. ¹⁵ Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say. ¹⁶ Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men. ¹⁷ And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword. ¹⁸ Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you. ¹⁹ And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not your's.
   ²⁰ Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying, ²¹ Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not: ²² Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it? ²³ But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. ²⁴ Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
   ²⁵ Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you. ²⁶ For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men. ²⁷ As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich. ²⁸ They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. ²⁹ Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? ³⁰ A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; ³¹ The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

   ¹ Les paroles de Jérémie, fils de Hilkija, d'entre les Sacrificateurs qui étaient à Hanathoth, au pays de Benjamin ; ² Auquel fut [adressée] la parole de l'Eternel, aux jours de Josias fils d'Amon Roi de Juda, la treizième année de son règne ; ³ Laquelle lui fut aussi [adressée] aux jours de Jéhojakim, fils de Josias, Roi de Juda, jusqu’à la fin de la onzième année de Sédécias, fils de Josias, Roi de Juda, [savoir] jusqu’au temps que Jérusalem fut transportée, ce qui arriva au cinquième mois.
   ⁴ La parole donc de l'Eternel me fut [adressée], en disant : ⁵ Avant que je te formasse dans le ventre [de ta mère], je t'ai connu ; et avant que tu fusses sorti de [son] sein, je t'ai sanctifié, je t'ai établi Prophète pour les nations. ⁶ Et je répondis : Ha ! ha ! Seigneur Eternel ! voici, je ne sais pas parler ; car je suis un enfant. ⁷ Et l'Eternel me dit : ne dis point : je suis un enfant ; car tu iras partout où je t'enverrai, et tu diras tout ce que je te commanderai. ⁸ Ne crains point [de te montrer] devant eux, car je suis avec toi pour te délivrer, dit l'Eternel. ⁹ Et l'Eternel avança sa main, et en toucha ma bouche, puis l'Eternel me dit : voici, j'ai mis mes paroles en ta bouche. ¹⁰ Regarde, je t'ai établi aujourd'hui sur les nations, et sur les Royaumes, afin que tu arraches et que tu démolisses, que tu ruines, et que tu détruises ; que tu bâtisses, et que tu plantes.
   ¹¹ Puis la parole de l'Eternel me fut [adressée], en disant : que vois-tu, Jérémie ? Et je répondis : je vois une branche d'amandier. ¹² Et l'Eternel me dit : tu as bien vu ; car je me hâte d'exécuter ma parole. ¹³ Alors la parole de l'Eternel me fut [adressée] pour la seconde fois, en disant : que vois-tu ? Et je répondis : je vois un pot bouillant, dont le devant est tourné vers l'Aquilon. ¹⁴ Et l'Eternel me dit : le mal se découvrira du côté de l'Aquilon sur tous les habitants de ce pays-ci. ¹⁵ Car voici, je m'en vais appeler toutes les familles des Royaumes de l'Aquilon, dit l'Eternel ; et elles viendront, et mettront chacune son trône à l'entrée des portes de Jérusalem, et près de toutes ses murailles à l'environ, et près de toutes les villes de Juda. ¹⁶ Et je leur prononcerai mes jugements, à cause de toute leur malice, par laquelle ils m'ont délaissé, et ont fait des parfums à d'autres dieux, et se sont prosternés devant l'ouvrage de leurs mains. ¹⁷ Toi donc, trousse tes reins, et te lève, et dis-leur toutes les choses que je te commanderai ; ne crains point [de te montrer] devant eux, de peur que je ne te fasse mettre en pièces en leur présence. ¹⁸ Car voici, je t'ai aujourd'hui établi comme une ville forte ; et comme une colonne de fer, et comme des murailles d'airain, contre tout ce pays-ci, c'est-à-dire, contre les Rois de Juda, contre les principaux du pays, contre ses Sacrificateurs, et contre le peuple du pays. ¹⁹ Et ils combattront contre toi, mais ils ne seront pas plus forts que toi ; car je suis avec toi, dit l'Eternel, pour te délivrer.

   ¹ Et la parole de l'Eternel me fut [adressée], en disant : ² Va, et crie, ceux de Jérusalem l'entendant, et dis : Ainsi a dit l'Eternel : il me souvient [pour l'amour] de toi de la compassion que j'ai eue pour toi en ta jeunesse, et de l'amour de tes épousailles, quand tu venais après moi dans le désert, en un pays qu'on ne sème point. ³ Israël était une chose sainte à l'Eternel, c'étaient les prémices de son revenu ; tous ceux qui le dévoraient étaient [trouvés] coupables, il leur en arrivait du mal, dit l'Eternel. ⁴ Ecoutez la parole de l'Eternel, maison de Jacob, et vous toutes les familles de la maison d'Israël : ⁵ Ainsi a dit l'Eternel : quelle injustice ont trouvée vos pères en moi, qu'ils se soient éloignés de moi, qu'ils aient marché après la vanité, et qu'ils soient devenus vains ? ⁶ Et ils n'ont point dit : où est l'Eternel qui nous a fait remonter du pays d'Egypte, qui nous a conduits par un désert, par un pays de landes et montagneux, par un pays aride et d'ombre de mort, par un pays où aucun homme n'avait passé, et où personne n'avait habité ? ⁷ Car je vous ai fait entrer dans un pays de Carmel, afin que vous mangeassiez ses fruits, et de ses biens ; mais sitôt que vous [y] êtes entrés, vous avez souillé mon pays, et avez rendu abominable mon héritage. ⁸ Les Sacrificateurs n'ont point dit : où est l'Eternel ? Et ceux qui expliquaient la Loi, ne m'ont point connu ; et les pasteurs ont prévariqué contre moi, et les prophètes ont prophétisé de par Bahal, et ont marché après des choses qui ne profitent de rien.
   ⁹ Pour cette cause encore je plaiderai avec vous, dit l'Eternel, et je plaiderai avec les enfants de vos enfants. ¹⁰ Car passez par les Îles de Kittim, et voyez ; envoyez en Kédar, et considérez bien, et regardez s'il y a eu rien de tel. ¹¹ Y a-t-il aucune nation qui ait changé de dieux, lesquels toutefois ne [sont] pas dieux ? Mais mon peuple a changé sa gloire en ce qui ne profite de rien. ¹² Cieux soyez étonnés de ceci ; ayez-[en] de l'horreur, et soyez extrêmement asséchés, dit l'Eternel. ¹³ Car mon peuple a fait deux maux ; ils m'ont abandonné, moi [qui suis] la source des eaux vives, pour se creuser des citernes, des citernes crevassées qui ne peuvent point contenir d'eau.
   ¹⁴ Israël est-il un esclave, ou un esclave né dans la maison ? pourquoi donc a-t-il été mis au pillage ? ¹⁵ Les lionceaux ont rugi, et ont jeté leur cri sur lui ; et on a mis leur pays en désolation, ses villes ont été brûlées, de sorte qu'il n'y a personne qui y habite. ¹⁶ Même les enfants de Noph, et de Taphnés te casseront le sommet de la tête. ¹⁷ Ne t'es-tu pas fait cela parce que tu as abandonné l'Eternel ton Dieu, dans le temps qu'il te menait par le chemin ? ¹⁸ Et maintenant, qu'as-tu affaire d'aller en Egypte pour y boire de l'eau de Sihor ? et qu'as-tu affaire d'aller en Assyrie, pour y boire de l'eau du fleuve ? ¹⁹ Ta malice te châtiera, et tes débauches te réprimanderont, afin que tu saches et que tu voies que c'est une chose mauvaise et amère, que tu aies abandonné l'Eternel ton Dieu, et que tu ne sois point rempli de ma frayeur, dit le Seigneur l'Eternel des armées.
   ²⁰ Parce que depuis longtemps j'ai brisé ton joug, et rompu tes liens, tu as dit : je ne serai plus dans la servitude ; c'est pourquoi tu as erré en te prostituant sur toute haute colline, et sous tout arbre vert. ²¹ Or je t'avais moi-même plantée [comme] une vigne exquise, de laquelle tout le plant était franc ; comment donc t'es-tu changée en sarments d'une vigne abâtardie ? ²² Quand tu te laverais avec du nitre, et que tu prendrais beaucoup de savon, ton iniquité [demeurerait] encore marquée devant moi, dit le Seigneur l'Eternel. ²³ Comment dis-tu : je ne me suis point souillée, je ne suis point allée après les Bahalins ? Regarde ton train dans la vallée, reconnais ce que tu as fait, dromadaire légère, qui ne tiens point de route certaine. ²⁴ Anesse sauvage, accoutumée au désert, humant le vent à son plaisir ; et qui est-ce qui lui pourrait faire rebrousser sa course ? nul de ceux qui la cherchent ne se lassera après elle, on la trouvera en son mois. ²⁵ Retiens ton pied, que tu ne marches déchaussée, et ton gosier, que tu ne sois altérée. Mais tu as dit : c'en est fait. Non ; car j'aime les étrangers, et j'irai après eux. ²⁶ Comme le larron est confus, quand il est surpris, ainsi sont confus ceux de la maison d'Israël, eux, leurs Rois, les principaux d'entre eux, leurs Sacrificateurs, et leurs Prophètes ; ²⁷ Qui disent au bois : tu es mon père ; et à la pierre : tu m'as engendré. Car ils m'ont tourné le dos, et non pas la face ; puis ils disent dans le temps de leur calamité : lève-toi, et nous délivre. ²⁸ Et où sont tes dieux que tu t'es faits ? qu'ils se lèvent pour voir s'ils te délivreront au temps de la calamité ; car, ô Juda ! tu as eu autant de dieux que de villes.
   ²⁹ Pourquoi plaideriez-vous contre moi ? vous avez tous péché contre moi, dit l'Eternel. ³⁰ J'ai frappé en vain vos enfants, ils n'ont point reçu d'instruction ; votre épée a dévoré vos Prophètes, comme un lion qui ravage [tout]. ³¹ Ô race ! considérez vous-mêmes la parole de l'Eternel, [qui dit] : Ai-je été un désert à Israël ? ai-je été une terre toute ténébreuse ? Pourquoi mon peuple a-t-il dit : nous sommes les maîtres ; nous ne viendrons plus à toi ? ³² La vierge oubliera-t-elle son ornement ? l'épouse ses atours ? mais mon peuple m'a oublié durant des jours sans nombre. ³³ Pourquoi rends-tu ainsi affectée ta contenance pour chercher des amoureux, en sorte que tu as même enseigné tes manières de faire aux femmes de mauvaise vie ? ³⁴ Même dans les pans de ta robe a été trouvé le sang des âmes des pauvres innocents, que tu n'avais point surpris en fracture, mais il y a été trouvé pour toutes ces choses-là. ³⁵ Et tu dis : je suis innocente ; quoi qu'il en soit, sa colère s'est détournée de moi. Voici, je m'en vais contester contre toi, sur ce que tu as dit : je n'ai point péché. ³⁶ Pourquoi te donnes-tu tant de mouvement, changeant de chemin ? tu seras aussi confuse d'Egypte, que tu as été confuse d'Assyrie. ³⁷ Tu sortiras même d'ici, ayant tes mains sur ta tête, parce que l'Eternel a rejeté les fondements de ta confiance, et tu n'auras aucune prospérité par eux.

Jérémie 3

Censure de Juda et d’Israël pour leurs infidélité contre Dieu.

   ¹ On dit : si quelqu'un délaisse sa femme, et qu'elle se séparant de lui se joigne à un autre mari, [le premier mari] retournera-t-il encore vers elle ? Le pays même n'en serait-il pas entièrement souillé ? Or toi, tu t'es prostituée à plusieurs amoureux, toutefois retourne-toi vers moi, dit l'Eternel. ² Lève tes yeux vers les lieux élevés, et regarde quel est le lieu où tu ne te sois point abandonnée ; tu te tenais par les chemins, comme un Arabe au désert ; et tu as souillé le pays par tes débauches, et par ta malice. ³ C'est pourquoi les pluies ont été retenues, et il n'y a point eu de pluie de la dernière saison, et tu as un front de femme débauchée ; tu n'as point voulu avoir de honte. ⁴ Ne crieras-tu point désormais vers moi : mon Père, tu es le conducteur de ma jeunesse ? ⁵ Tiendra-t-il [sa colère] à toujours, et me la gardera-t-il à jamais ? Voici, tu as [ainsi] parlé, et tu as fait ces maux-là, autant que tu as pu.
   ⁶ Aussi l'Eternel me dit aux jours du Roi Josias : n'as-tu point vu ce qu'Israël la revêche a fait ? elle s'en est allée sur toute haute montagne, et sous tout arbre vert, et elle s'y est prostituée. ⁷ Et quand elle a eu fait toutes ces choses, j'ai dit : retourne-toi vers moi ; mais elle n'est point retournée ; ce que sa soeur Juda la perfide a vu ; ⁸ Et j'ai vu que pour toutes les occasions par lesquelles Israël la revêche avait commis adultère, je l'ai renvoyée, et lui ai donné ses lettres de divorce ; toutefois Juda sa soeur l'infidèle n'a point eu de crainte, mais s'en est allée, et elle aussi s'est prostituée. ⁹ Et il est arrivé que par la facilité qu'elle a à s'abandonner elle a souillé le pays, et a commis adultère avec la pierre et le bois. ¹⁰ Et néanmoins pour tout ceci, Juda sa soeur la perfide n'est point retournée à moi de tout son coeur, mais avec mensonge, dit l'Eternel. ¹¹ L'Eternel donc m'a dit : Israël la revêche s'est montrée plus juste que Juda la perfide.
   ¹² Va donc, et crie ces paroles-ci vers l'Aquilon ; et dis : retourne-toi, Israël la revêche, dit l'Eternel ; je ne ferai point tomber ma colère sur vous ; car je suis miséricordieux, dit l'Eternel, et je ne vous la garderai point à toujours. ¹³ Mais reconnais ton iniquité ; car tu as péché contre l'Eternel ton Dieu, et tu t'es prostituée aux étrangers sous tout arbre vert, et n'as point écouté ma voix, dit l'Eternel. ¹⁴ Enfants revêches, convertissez-vous, dit l'Eternel ; car j'ai droit de mari sur vous ; et je vous prendrai l'un d'une ville, et deux d'une lignée, et je vous ferai entrer en Sion. ¹⁵ Et je vous donnerai des pasteurs selon mon coeur, qui vous paîtront de science et d'intelligence. ¹⁶ Et il arrivera que quand vous serez multipliés et accrus sur la terre, en ces jours-là, dit l'Eternel, on ne dira plus : L'Arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel ; elle ne leur montera plus au coeur, ils n'en feront point mention, ils ne la visiteront plus, et cela ne se fera plus. ¹⁷ En ce temps-là on appellera Jérusalem, le Trône de l'Eternel, et toutes les nations s'assembleront vers elle, au Nom de l'Eternel, à Jérusalem, et elles ne marcheront plus après la dureté de leur coeur mauvais. ¹⁸ En ces jours-là la maison de Juda marchera avec la maison d'Israël, et ils viendront ensemble du pays d'Aquilon au pays que j'ai donné en héritage à vos pères. ¹⁹ Car j'ai dit : comment te mettrai-je entre [mes] fils, et te donnerai-je la terre désirable, l'héritage de la noblesse des armées des nations ? et j'ai dit : tu me crieras, mon Père, et tu ne te détourneras point de moi.
   ²⁰ Certainement comme une femme pèche contre son ami, ainsi avez-vous péché contre moi, maison d'Israël, dit l'Eternel. ²¹ Une voix a été ouïe sur les lieux élevés, des pleurs de supplications des enfants d'Israël, parce qu'ils ont perverti leur voie, et qu'ils ont mis en oubli l'Eternel, leur Dieu. ²² Enfants rebelles, convertissez-vous, je remédierai à vos rébellions. Voici, nous venons vers toi ; car tu [es] l'Eternel notre Dieu. ²³ Certainement [on s'attend] en vain aux collines, [et] à la multitude des montagnes ; mais c'est en l'Eternel notre Dieu qu'est la délivrance d'Israël. ²⁴ Car la honte a consumé dès notre jeunesse le travail de nos pères, leurs brebis et leurs boeufs, leurs fils et leurs filles. ²⁵ Nous serons gisants dans notre honte, et notre ignominie nous couvrira, parce que nous avons péché contre l'Eternel notre Dieu, nous et nos pères, dès notre jeunesse, et jusqu’à aujourd'hui ; et nous n'avons point obéi à la voix de l'Eternel notre Dieu.

Jérémie 4

Exhortation aux Juifs. Prédictions contre Jérusalem.

   ¹ Israël, si tu te retournes, dit l'Eternel, retourne-toi à moi ; si tu ôtes tes abominations de devant moi, tu ne seras plus errant ça et là. ² Alors tu jureras en vérité, et en jugement, et en justice, l'Eternel est vivant ; et les nations se béniront en lui, et se glorifieront en lui.
   ³ Car ainsi a dit l'Eternel à ceux de Juda et de Jérusalem : défrichez-vous les terres, et ne semez point sur les épines. ⁴ Hommes de Juda, et vous habitants de Jérusalem, soyez circoncis à l'Eternel, et ôtez les prépuces de vos coeurs ; de peur que ma fureur ne sorte comme un feu, et qu'elle ne s'embrase, sans qu'il y ait personne qui l'éteigne, à cause de la méchanceté de vos actions.
   ⁵ Faites savoir en Juda, et publiez dans Jérusalem, et dites : sonnez du cor par le pays, criez, [et] vous amassez ; et dites : assemblez-vous, et nous entrerons dans les villes fortes. ⁶ Dressez l'enseigne vers Sion, retirez-vous en troupe, et ne vous arrêtez point ; car je m'en vais faire venir de l'Aquilon le mal et une grande calamité. ⁷ Le lion est sorti de la caverne, et le destructeur des nations est parti ; il est sorti de son lieu pour réduire ton pays en désolation, tes villes seront ruinées, tellement qu'il n'y aura personne qui y habite. ⁸ C'est pourquoi ceignez-vous de sacs, lamentez, et hurlez ; car l'ardeur de la colère de l'Eternel n'est point détournée de nous. ⁹ Et il arrivera en ce jour-là, dit l'Eternel, que le coeur du Roi, et le coeur des principaux sera épouvanté, et que les Sacrificateurs seront étonnés, et que les Prophètes seront tout confus. ¹⁰ C'est pourquoi j'ai dit : ha ! ha ! Seigneur Eternel ! oui certainement tu as abusé ce peuple et Jérusalem, en disant : vous aurez la paix ; et l'épée est venue jusqu’à l'âme. ¹¹ En ce temps-là on dira à ce peuple, et à Jérusalem : un vent éclaircissant les lieux élevés [souffle] au désert, dans le chemin de la fille de mon peuple, non pas pour vanner ni pour nettoyer : ¹² Un vent plus véhément que ceux-là viendra à moi, et je leur ferai maintenant leur procès. ¹³ Voici, il montera comme des nuées, et ses chariots seront semblables à un tourbillon, ses chevaux seront plus légers que des aigles ; malheur à nous ! car nous sommes détruits. ¹⁴ Jérusalem, nettoie ton coeur de ta malice, afin que tu sois délivrée ; jusques à quand séjourneront au dedans de toi les pensées de ton injustice ? ¹⁵ Car le cri apporte des nouvelles de Dan, et publie du mont d'Ephraïm le tourment. ¹⁶ Faites l'entendre aux nations, voici, publiez contre Jérusalem, [et dites] : les assiégeants viennent d'un pays éloigné, et ils ont jeté leur cri contre les villes de Juda. ¹⁷ Ils se sont mis tout autour d'elle comme les gardes des champs, parce qu'elle m'a été rebelle, dit l'Eternel. ¹⁸ Ta conduite et tes actions t'ont produit ces choses ; telle a été ta malice ; parce que ç'a été une chose amère ; certainement elle te touchera jusques au coeur.
   ¹⁹ Mon ventre ! mon ventre ! je suis dans la douleur ; le dedans de mon coeur, mon coeur me bat, je ne me puis taire ; car ô mon âme ! tu as ouï le son du cor, et le retentissement bruyant de l'alarme. ²⁰ Une ruine est appelée par l'autre, car toute la terre est détruite ; mes tentes ont été incontinent détruites, [et] mes pavillons en un moment. ²¹ Jusques à quand verrai-je l'enseigne, et entendrai-je le son du cor ? ²² Car mon peuple est insensé, ils ne m'ont point reconnu ; ce sont des enfants insensés, et qui n'ont point d'entendement ; ils sont habiles à faire le mal, mais ils ne savent pas faire le bien. ²³ J'ai regardé la terre, et voici, elle est sans forme et vide ; et les cieux, et il n'y a point de clarté. ²⁴ J'ai regardé les montagnes, et voici, elles branlent ; et toutes les collines sont renversées. ²⁵ J'ai regardé, et voici, il n'y a pas un seul homme, et tous les oiseaux des cieux s'en sont fuis. ²⁶ J'ai regardé, et voici, Carmel est un désert, et toutes ses villes ont été ruinées par l'Eternel, et par l'ardeur de sa colère. ²⁷ Car ainsi a dit l'Eternel : toute la terre ne sera que désolation ; néanmoins je ne l'achèverai pas entièrement. ²⁸ C'est pourquoi la terre mènera deuil, et les cieux seront obscurcis au-dessus, parce que je l'ai prononcé ; je l'ai pensé, je ne m'en repentirai point, et je ne le révoquerai point. ²⁹ Toute ville s'enfuit à cause du bruit des gens de cheval, et de ceux qui tirent de l'arc ; ils sont entrés dans les bois épais, et sont montés sur les rochers ; toute ville est abandonnée et personne n'y habite. ³⁰ Et quand tu auras été détruite, que feras-tu ? quoique tu te vêtes de cramoisi, et que tu te pares d'ornements d'or, et que tu couvres ton visage de fard, tu t'embellis en vain ; tes amoureux t'ont rebutée, ils chercheront ta vie. ³¹ Car j'ai ouï un cri comme celui d'une [femme] qui est en travail, et une angoisse comme celle d'une femme qui est en travail de son premier-né ; c'est le cri de la fille de Sion ; elle soupire, elle étend ses mains, [en disant] : Malheur maintenant à moi, car mon âme est défaillie à cause des meurtriers.

Jérémie 5

Obstination des Juifs. Menaces.

   ¹ Promenez-vous par les rues de Jérusalem, et regardez maintenant, et sachez, et vous enquérez par ses places, si vous y trouverez un homme de bien, s'il y a quelqu'un qui fasse ce qui est droit, et qui cherche la fidélité ; et je pardonnerai à la [ville]. ² Que s'ils disent : l'Eternel est vivant ; ils jurent en cela plus faussement. ³ Eternel, tes yeux [ne regardent-ils pas] à la fidélité ? Tu les as frappés, et ils n'en ont point senti de douleur ; tu les as consumés, [et] ils ont refusé de recevoir instruction ; ils ont endurci leurs faces plus qu'une roche, ils ont refusé de se convertir. ⁴ Et j'ai dit : certainement ce ne sont que les plus abjects, qui se sont montrés fous, parce qu'ils ne connaissent point la voie de l'Eternel, le droit de leur Dieu. ⁵ Je m'en irai donc aux plus grands, et je leur parlerai ; car ceux-là connaissent la voie de l'Eternel, le droit de leur Dieu ; mais ceux-là mêmes ont aussi brisé le joug, [et] ont rompu les liens. ⁶ C'est pourquoi le lion de la forêt les a tués, le loup du soir les a ravagés, [et] le léopard est au guet contre leurs villes ; quiconque en sortira sera déchiré, car leurs péchés sont multipliés, [et] leurs rébellions sont renforcées. ⁷ Comment te pardonnerai-je en cela ? tes fils m'ont abandonné, et ils jurent par ceux qui ne sont point dieux ; je les ai rassasiés, et ils ont commis adultère et sont allés en foule dans la maison de la prostituée. ⁸ Ils sont comme des chevaux bien repus, quand ils se lèvent le matin, chacun hennit après la femme de son prochain. ⁹ Ne punirais-je point ces choses-là, dit l'Eternel ? et mon âme ne se vengerait-elle pas d'une nation qui est telle ?
   ¹⁰ Montez sur ses murailles, et les rompez ; mais ne les achevez pas entièrement ; ôtez ses créneaux ; car ils ne sont point à l'Eternel. ¹¹ Parce que la maison d'Israël et la maison de Juda se sont portées fort infidèlement contre moi, dit l'Eternel. ¹² Ils ont démenti l'Eternel, et ont dit : cela n'arrivera pas, et le mal ne viendra pas sur nous, nous ne verrons pas l'épée ni la famine. ¹³ Et les Prophètes sont légers comme le vent, et la parole n'est point en eux ; ainsi leur sera-t-il fait. ¹⁴ C'est pourquoi, ainsi a dit l'Eternel, le Dieu des armées : parce que vous avez proféré cette parole-là, voici, je m'en vais mettre mes paroles en ta bouche pour y être comme un feu, et ce peuple sera comme le bois, et ce feu les consumera. ¹⁵ Maison d'Israël, voici, je m'en vais faire venir contre vous une nation d'un pays éloigné, dit l'Eternel, une nation robuste, une nation ancienne, une nation de laquelle tu ne sauras point la Langue, et dont tu n'entendras point ce qu'elle dira. ¹⁶ Son carquois est comme un sépulcre ouvert, [et] ils sont tous vaillants. ¹⁷ Et elle mangera ta moisson et ton pain, que tes fils et tes filles doivent manger ; elle mangera tes brebis, et tes boeufs ; elle mangera [les fruits] de tes vignes, et de tes figuiers, et réduira à la pauvreté par l'épée tes villes fortes, sur lesquelles tu te confiais. ¹⁸ Toutefois en ces jours-là, dit l'Eternel, je ne vous achèverai pas entièrement. ¹⁹ Et il arrivera que vous direz : pourquoi l'Eternel notre Dieu nous a-t-il fait toutes ces choses ? et tu leur diras ainsi : comme vous m'avez abandonné, [et] avez servi les dieux de l'étranger dans votre pays, ainsi serez-vous asservis aux étrangers en un pays qui n'est point à vous.
   ²⁰ Faites savoir ceci dans la maison de Jacob, et le publiez dans Juda, en disant : ²¹ Ecoutez maintenant ceci, peuple fou, et qui n'avez point d'intelligence, qui avez des yeux, et ne voyez point ; et qui avez des oreilles, et n'entendez point. ²² Ne me craindrez-vous point, dit l'Eternel, et ne serez-vous point épouvantés devant ma face ? moi qui ai mis le sable pour la borne de la mer, par une ordonnance perpétuelle, et qui ne passera point ; ses vagues s'émeuvent, mais elles ne seront pas les plus fortes ; et elles bruient, mais elles ne la passeront point. ²³ Mais ce peuple-ci a un coeur rétif et rebelle ; ils se sont reculés en arrière, et s'en sont allés. ²⁴ Et ils n'ont point dit en leur coeur : craignons maintenant l'Eternel notre Dieu, qui nous donne la pluie de la première et de la dernière saison, [et qui] nous garde les semaines ordonnées pour la moisson.
   ²⁵ Vos iniquités ont détourné ces choses, et vos péchés ont empêché qu'il ne vous arrivât du bien. ²⁶ Car il s'est trouvé dans mon peuple des méchants qui sont aux aguets, comme celui qui tend des pièges, ils posent une machine de perdition pour y prendre les hommes. ²⁷ Comme la cage est remplie d'oiseaux, ainsi leurs maisons [sont] remplies de fraude, et par ce moyen ils se sont agrandis et enrichis. ²⁸ Ils sont engraissés et parés ; même ils ont surpassé les actions des méchants ; ils ne font justice à personne, non pas même à l'orphelin, et ils prospèrent, et ne font point droit aux pauvres. ²⁹ Ne punirais-je point ces choses-là, dit l'Eternel ? et mon âme ne se vengerait-elle pas d'une nation qui est telle ? ³⁰ Il est arrivé en la terre une chose étonnante, et qui fait horreur : ³¹ C'est que les Prophètes prophétisent le mensonge, et les Sacrificateurs dominent par leur moyen ; et mon peuple a aimé cela. Que ferez-vous donc quand elle prendra fin ?
