¹ La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de Jéhovah, disant : ² Lève-toi et descends à la maison du potier, et là je te ferai entendre ma parole. ³ Je descendis à la maison du potier ; or il faisait son ouvrage sur des roues. ⁴ Et le vase qu'il faisait manqua, comme il arrive à l'argile dans la main du potier, et il refit un autre vase, comme il plut au potier de le faire. ⁵ Et la parole de Jéhovah me fut adressée en ces termes : ⁶ Est-ce que je ne puis pas vous faire comme a fait ce potier, maison d'Israël ? Ce que l'argile est dans la main du potier, vous l'êtes dans ma main, maison d'Israël. ⁷ Tantôt je parle, touchant une nation et touchant un royaume, d'arracher, d'abattre et de détruire. ⁸ Mais cette nation, contre laquelle j'ai parlé, revient-elle de sa méchanceté, alors je me repens du mal que j'avais voulu lui faire. ⁹ Tantôt je parle, touchant une nation et touchant un royaume, de bâtir et de planter, ¹⁰ Mais cette nation fait-elle ce qui est mal à mes yeux, en n'écoutant pas ma voix, alors je me repens du bien que j'avais dit que je lui ferais.

   ¹ The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, ² Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. ³ Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. ⁴ And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. ⁵ Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ⁶ O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel. ⁷ At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it; ⁸ If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. ⁹ And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; ¹⁰ If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

¹ Voici la parole adressée à Jérémie par l'Eternel: ² «Lève-toi et descends à la maison du potier. Là, je te ferai entendre mes paroles.»
³ Je suis descendu à la maison du potier et j'ai vu qu'il façonnait un objet sur un tour, ⁴ mais le vase d'argile qu'il façonnait ne donnait rien dans sa main. Alors, il a recommencé un autre vase en le faisant comme il lui plaisait.
⁵ Et voici la parole de l'Eternel qui m'a été adressée: ⁶ «Ne puis-je pas agir envers vous comme ce potier, communauté d'Israël? déclare l'Eternel. Vous êtes dans ma main comme de l'argile dans la main du potier, communauté d'Israël: ⁷ parfois je parle, à propos d'une nation ou d'un royaume, d'arracher, de démolir et de détruire, ⁸ mais si la nation dont j'ai parlé renonce à son mauvais comportement, je renoncerai au mal que j'avais prévu de lui faire; ⁹ et parfois je parle, à propos d'une nation ou d'un royaume, de construire et de planter, ¹⁰ mais si cette nation fait ce qui est mal à mes yeux et ne m'écoute pas, je renoncerai au bien que j'avais l'intention de lui faire.
