   ⁸ La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de l'Eternel, après que le roi Sédécias eut fait un accord avec tout le peuple qui était à Jérusalem pour qu'on proclamât un affranchissement, ⁹ en renvoyant libre chacun son esclave et chacun sa servante, hébreu ou hébreuse, en sorte qu'il n'y eût personne qui retînt en servitude un Juif, son frère. ¹⁰ Or, tous les chefs, ainsi que tout le peuple, qui étaient entrés dans cet accord, consentirent à affranchir chacun son esclave et chacun sa servante, pour ne plus les retenir en servitude ; ils y consentirent et les renvoyèrent. ¹¹ Mais ensuite ils revinrent en arrière et firent revenir les esclaves, hommes et femmes, qu'ils avaient renvoyés libres, et les obligèrent à être leurs esclaves et leurs servantes. ¹² La parole de l'Eternel fut donc adressée à Jérémie de la part de l'Eternel en ces mots : ¹³ Ainsi parle l'Eternel, Dieu d'Israël : J'avais traité alliance avec vos pères, lorsque je les tirai du pays d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude, en leur disant : ¹⁴ Au terme de sept ans, vous renverrez chacun votre frère hébreu qui vous aura été vendu ; il te servira six ans, puis tu le renverras libre de chez toi. Mais vos pères ne m'ont point écouté et n'ont point prêté l'oreille. ¹⁵ Et vous vous étiez amendés aujourd'hui et aviez fait ce qui est droit devant moi, en donnant la liberté chacun à son prochain ; vous aviez fait un accord en ma présence, dans la maison sur laquelle mon nom est invoqué. ¹⁶ Mais vous êtes revenus en arrière et avez profané mon nom, car vous avez fait revenir chacun son esclave et chacun sa servante que vous aviez affranchis, rendus à eux-mêmes, et vous les avez obligés à être vos esclaves et vos servantes. ¹⁷ C'est pourquoi l'Eternel parle ainsi : Vous ne m'avez point obéi en donnant la liberté chacun à son frère et chacun à son prochain ; voici, je vous donne la liberté, dit l'Eternel, d'aller au-devant de l'épée, de la peste et de la famine, et je vous livrerai pour être agités parmi tous les royaumes de la terre. ¹⁸ Et les hommes qui ont transgressé mon alliance et qui n'ont pas exécuté les termes de l'accord qu'ils ont fait devant moi, je les rendrai tels que le veau qu'ils ont coupé en deux pour passer entre ses deux moitiés, ¹⁹ les chefs de Juda et les chefs de Jérusalem, officiers de la cour et sacrificateurs, et tous ceux du pays qui ont passé entre les moitiés du veau. ²⁰ Je les livrerai à leurs ennemis et à ceux qui cherchent leur vie, et leurs cadavres seront la pâture des oiseaux des cieux et des bêtes de la terre. ²¹ Et Sédécias, roi de Juda, et les principaux de sa cour, je les livrerai à leurs ennemis et à ceux qui cherchent leur vie, à l'armée du roi de Babylone qui s'est éloignée de vous. ²² Voici, je vais leur donner ordre, dit l'Eternel, et les ramener contre cette ville ; ils combattront contre elle, ils la prendront et la brûleront, et je ferai des villes de Juda des lieux désolés sans habitants.

   ⁸ This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people which were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them; ⁹ That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being an Hebrew or an Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Jew his brother. ¹⁰ Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that every one should let his manservant, and every one his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go. ¹¹ But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids. ¹² Therefore the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, ¹³ Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondmen, saying, ¹⁴ At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear. ¹⁵ And ye were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name: ¹⁶ But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom he had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids. ¹⁷ Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth. ¹⁸ And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof, ¹⁹ The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts of the calf; ²⁰ I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth. ²¹ And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which are gone up from you. ²² Behold, I will command, saith the LORD, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an inhabitant.

   ⁸ Verbum quod factum est ad Jeremiam a Domino, postquam percussit rex Sedecias fœdus cum omni populo in Jerusalem, prædicans
   ⁹ ut dimitteret unusquisque servum suum et unusquisque ancillam suam, Hebræum et Hebræam, liberos, et nequaquam dominarentur eis, id est, in Judæo et fratre suo.
   ¹⁰ Audierunt ergo omnes principes et universus populus qui inierant pactum ut dimitteret unusquisque servum suum et unusquisque ancillam suam liberos, et ultra non dominarentur eis : audierunt igitur, et dimiserunt.
   ¹¹ Et conversi sunt deinceps : et retraxerunt servos et ancillas suas quos dimiserant liberos, et subjugaverunt in famulos et famulas.
   ¹² Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam a Domino, dicens :
   ¹³ Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël : Ego percussi fœdus cum patribus vestris in die qua eduxi eos de terra Ægypti, de domo servitutis, dicens :
   ¹⁴ Cum completi fuerint septem anni, dimittat unusquisque fratrem suum Hebræum, qui venditus est ei : et serviet tibi sex annis, et dimittes eum a te liberum : et non audierunt patres vestri me, nec inclinaverunt aurem suam.
   ¹⁵ Et conversi estis vos hodie, et fecistis quod rectum est in oculis meis, ut prædicaretis libertatem unusquisque ad amicum suum : et inistis pactum in conspectu meo, in domo in qua invocatum est nomen meum super eam :
   ¹⁶ et reversi estis, et commaculastis nomen meum, et reduxistis unusquisque servum suum et unusquisque ancillam suam quos dimiseratis ut essent liberi et suæ potestatis, et subjugastis eos ut sint vobis servi et ancillæ.
   ¹⁷ Propterea hæc dicit Dominus : Vos non audistis me, ut prædicaretis libertatem unusquisque fratri suo et unusquisque amico suo : ecce ego prædico vobis libertatem, ait Dominus, ad gladium, ad pestem, et ad famem, et dabo vos in commotionem cunctis regnis terræ.
   ¹⁸ Et dabo viros qui prævaricantur fœdus meum, et non observaverunt verba fœderis quibus assensi sunt in conspectu meo, vitulum quem conciderunt in duas partes, et transierunt inter divisiones ejus,
   ¹⁹ principes Juda et principes Jerusalem, eunuchi et sacerdotes, et omnis populus terræ, qui transierunt inter divisiones vituli :
   ²⁰ et dabo eos in manus inimicorum suorum, et in manus quærentium animam eorum, et erit morticinum eorum in escam volatilibus cæli et bestiis terræ.
   ²¹ Et Sedeciam regem Juda, et principes ejus, dabo in manus inimicorum suorum, et in manus quærentium animas eorum, et in manus exercituum regis Babylonis, qui recesserunt a vobis.
   ²² Ecce ego præcipio, dicit Dominus, et reducam eos in civitatem hanc, et præliabuntur adversus eam, et capient eam, et incendent igni : et civitates Juda dabo in solitudinem, eo quod non sit habitator.
