   ¹ The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi. ² I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob, ³ And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness. ⁴ Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation for ever. ⁵ And your eyes shall see, and ye shall say, The LORD will be magnified from the border of Israel.

¹ Message, parole de l'Eternel adressée à Israël par l'intermédiaire de Malachie.
² Je vous ai aimés, dit l'Eternel,
et vous dites: «En quoi nous as-tu aimés?»
Esaü n'est-il pas le frère de Jacob? déclare l'Eternel.
Cependant *j'ai aimé Jacob
³ et j'ai détesté Esaü:
j'ai livré ses montagnes à la dévastation,
son héritage aux chacals du désert.
⁴ Si Edom prétend: «Nous sommes détruits,
mais nous relèverons les ruines»,
voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers:
«Qu'ils construisent! Je démolirai
et on les appellera ‘pays de la méchanceté',
‘peuple contre lequel l'Eternel est irrité pour toujours'.»
⁵ Vos yeux le verront,
et vous direz: «L'Eternel est grand,
même en dehors des frontières d'Israël!»
