Mt 5-7 (Catholique Crampon)

¹ Voyant les foules, il monta sur la montagne, et lorsqu'il se fut assis, ses disciples s'approchèrent de lui. ² Alors, prenant la parole, il se mit à les enseigner, en disant : ³ "Heureux les pauvres en esprit, car le royaume des cieux est à eux ! ⁴ Heureux ceux qui sont affligés, car ils seront consolés ! ⁵ Heureux ceux qui sont doux, car ils posséderont la terre ! ⁶ Heureux ceux qui ont faim et soif de la justice, car ils seront rassasiés ! ⁷ Heureux les miséricordieux, car ils obtiendront miséricorde ! ⁸ Heureux ceux qui ont le coeur pur, car ils verront Dieu ! ⁹ Heureux les pacifiques, car ils seront appelés enfants de Dieu ! ¹⁰ Heureux ceux qui souffrent persécution pour la justice, car le royaume des cieux est à eux ! ¹¹ Heureux serez-vous, lorsqu'on vous insultera, qu'on vous persécutera, et qu'on dira faussement toute sorte de mal contre vous, à cause de moi. ¹² Réjouissez-vous et soyez dans l'allégresse, parce que votre récompense est grande dans les cieux ; car c'est ainsi qu'ils ont persécuté les prophètes qui ont été avant vous. ¹³ Vous êtes le sel de la terre ; mais si le sel s'affadit, avec quoi le salera-t-on ? Il n'est plus bon à rien qu'à être jeté dehors pour être foulé aux pieds par les hommes. ¹⁴ Vous êtes la lumière du monde : une ville, située au sommet d'une montagne, ne peut être cachée. ¹⁵ Et on n'allume pas une lampe pour la mettre sous le boisseau, mais sur le chandelier, et elle éclaire tous ceux qui sont dans la maison. ¹⁶ Qu'ainsi votre lumière brille devant les hommes, afin que, voyant vos bonnes oeuvres, ils glorifient votre Père qui est dans les cieux. ¹⁷ Ne pensez pas que je sois venu abolir la Loi ou les Prophètes ; je ne suis pas venu abolir, mais parfaire. ¹⁸ Car, je vous le dis en vérité, jusqu'à ce que passent le ciel et la terre, un seul iota ou un seul trait de la Loi ne passera pas, que tout ne soit accompli. ¹⁹ Celui donc qui aura violé un de ces moindres commandements, et appris aux hommes à faire de même, sera tenu pour le moindre dans le royaume des cieux ; mais celui qui les aura pratiqués et enseignés, sera tenu pour grand dans le royaume des cieux. ²⁰ Car je vous dis que si votre justice ne surpasse celle des Scribes et des Pharisiens, vous n'entrerez point dans le royaume des cieux. ²¹ Vous avez appris qu'il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne tueras point ; mais qui tuera sera justiciable du tribunal. ²² Et moi, je vous dis : Quiconque se met en colère contre son frère [à la légère] sera justiciable du tribunal ; et qui dira à son frère : Raca ! sera justiciable du Sanhédrin ; et qui lui dira : Fou ! sera justiciable pour la géhenne du feu. ²³ Si donc tu viens présenter ton offrande à l'autel et que là tu te souviennes que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi, ²⁴ laisse là ton offrande, devant l'autel, et va d'abord te réconcilier avec ton frère ; et alors viens présenter ton offrande. ²⁵ Accorde-toi au plus tôt avec ton adversaire, tant que tu es en chemin avec lui, de peur que l'adversaire ne te livre au juge, que le juge (ne te livre) à l'appariteur, et que tu ne sois jeté en prison. ²⁶ En vérité, je te le dis, tu n'en sortiras pas que tu n'aies payé le dernier sou. ²⁷ Vous avez appris qu'il a été dit : tu ne commettras point d'adultère. ²⁸ Et moi, je vous dis : quiconque regarde une femme avec convoitise a déjà commis l'adultère avec elle, dans son coeur. ²⁹ Si donc ton oeil droit est pour toi une occasion de chute, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi : car mieux vaut pour toi qu'un seul de tes membres périsse, et que ton corps tout entier ne soit pas jeté dans la géhenne. ³⁰ Et si ta main droite est pour toi une occasion de chute, coupe-la et jette-la loin de toi : car mieux vaut pour toi qu'un seul de tes membres périsse, et que ton corps tout entier n'aille pas dans la géhenne. ³¹ Il a été dit aussi : Si quelqu'un répudie sa femme, qu'il lui donne un acte de répudiation. ³² Et moi, je vous dis : quiconque répudie sa femme, hors le cas d'impudicité, fait qu'on sera adultère avec elle ; et celui qui épouse une répudiée commet l'adultère. ³³ Vous avez encore appris qu'il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne te parjureras point, mais tu t'acquitteras envers le Seigneur de tes serments. ³⁴ Et moi, je vous dis de ne faire aucune sorte de serments : ni par le ciel, parce qu'il est le trône de Dieu ; ³⁵ ni par la terre, parce qu'elle est l'escabeau de ses pieds ; ni par Jérusalem, parce que c'est la ville du grand Roi. ³⁶ Ne jure pas non plus par ta tête, parce que tu ne peux rendre blanc ou noir un seul de tes cheveux. ³⁷ Mais que votre parole soit : oui, oui ; non, non. Ce qui est en plus de cela vient du Malin. ³⁸ Vous avez appris qu'il a été dit : oeil pour oeil et dent pour dent. ³⁹ Et moi, je vous dis de ne pas tenir tête au méchant ; mais si quelqu'un te frappe sur la joue droite, tends-lui encore l'autre. ⁴⁰ Et à celui qui veut t'appeler en justice pour avoir ta tunique, abandonne encore ton manteau. ⁴¹ Et si quelqu'un te réquisitionne pour un mille, fais-en deux avec lui. ⁴² Donne à qui te demande, et ne te détourne pas de qui veut te faire un emprunt. ⁴³ Vous avez appris qu'il a été dit : Tu aimeras ton proche, et tu haïras ton ennemi. ⁴⁴ Et moi je vous dis : aimez vos ennemis et priez pour ceux qui vous persécutent, ⁴⁵ afin que vous deveniez enfants de votre Père qui est dans les cieux ; car il fait lever son soleil sur les méchants et sur les bons, et descendre la pluie sur les justes et sur les injustes. ⁴⁶ Si en effet vous aimez ceux qui vous aiment, quelle récompense méritez-vous ? Les publicains eux-mêmes n'en font-ils pas autant ? ⁴⁷ Et si vous ne saluez que vos frères, que faites-vous d'extraordinaire ? Les païens eux-mêmes n'en font-ils pas autant ? ⁴⁸ Vous donc, vous serez parfaits comme votre Père céleste est parfait.

Matthieu 6

¹ Gardez-vous de pratiquer votre justice aux regards des hommes pour être vus d'eux ; autrement, vous n'avez pas de récompense auprès de votre Père qui est dans les cieux. ² Quand donc tu fais l'aumône, ne fais pas sonner de la trompette devant toi, comme font les hypocrites dans les synagogues et dans les rues, afin d'être glorifiés par les hommes ; en vérité, je vous le dis, ils ont reçu leur récompense. ³ Pour toi, quand tu fais l'aumône, que ta main gauche ne sache pas ce que fait ta main droite, ⁴ afin que ton aumône soit dans le secret ; et ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra. ⁵ Et lorsque vous priez, ne soyez pas comme les hypocrites, qui aiment à prier debout dans les synagogues et au coin des rues, afin d'être vus des hommes ; en vérité, je vous le dis, ils ont reçu leur récompense. ⁶ Pour toi, quand tu veux prier, entre dans ta chambre et, ayant fermé ta porte, prie ton Père qui est présent dans le secret ; et ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra. ⁷ Dans vos prières, ne multipliez pas les paroles, comme font les païens, qui s'imaginent devoir être exaucés à force de paroles. ⁸ Ne leur ressemblez donc pas, car votre Père sait de quoi vous avez besoin, avant que vous ne le lui demandiez. Vous prierez donc ainsi : ⁹ Notre Père qui êtes aux cieux, que votre nom soit sanctifié ; ¹⁰ que votre règne arrive ; que votre volonté soit faite sur la terre comme au ciel. ¹¹ Donnez-nous aujourd'hui le pain nécessaire à notre subsistance ; ¹² et remettez-nous nos dettes, comme nous-mêmes remettons à ceux qui nous doivent ; ¹³ et ne nous induisez point en tentation, mais délivrez-nous du Malin. ¹⁴ Car si vous remettez aux hommes leurs offenses, votre Père céleste vous remettra aussi (les vôtres). ¹⁵ Mais si vous ne remettez pas (les leurs) aux hommes, votre Père ne pardonnera pas non plus vos offenses. ¹⁶ Et lorsque vous jeûnez, ne prenez pas un air sombre, comme les hypocrites, qui exténuent leur visage, pour faire paraître aux hommes qu'ils jeûnent ; en vérité, je vous le dis, ils ont reçu leur récompense. ¹⁷ Pour toi, quand tu jeûnes, parfume ta tête et lave ton visage, ¹⁸ afin qu'il ne paraisse pas aux hommes que tu jeûnes, mais à ton Père qui est présent dans le secret ; et ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra. ¹⁹ Ne vous amassez pas des trésors sur la terre, où les voleurs percent les murs et dérobent. ²⁰ Mais amassez-vous des trésors dans le ciel, où ni la teigne ni les vers ne consument, et où les voleurs ne percent pas les murs ni ne dérobent. ²¹ Car là où est ton trésor, là aussi sera ton coeur. ²² La lampe du corps, c'est l'oeil. Si donc ton oeil est sain, tout ton corps sera éclairé ; mais si ton oeil est gâté, tout ton corps sera dans les ténèbres. ²³ Mais si la lumière qui est en toi est ténèbres, quelles ténèbres ! ²⁴ Nul ne peut servir deux maîtres : car ou il haïra l'un et aimera l'autre, ou il s'attachera à l'un et méprisera l'autre. Vous ne pouvez servir Dieu et la Richesse. ²⁵ C'est pourquoi je vous dis : Ne vous inquiétez pas pour votre âme de ce que vous mangerez ou de ce que vous boirez, ni pour votre corps de quoi vous le vêtirez. L'âme n'est-elle pas plus que la nourriture, et le corps plus que le vêtement ? ²⁶ Regardez les oiseaux du ciel, qui ne sèment ni ne moissonnent et n'amassent rien dans des greniers, et votre Père céleste les nourrit. Ne valez-vous pas beaucoup plus qu'eux ? ²⁷ Qui de vous, à force de soucis, pourrait ajouter une seule coudée à la longueur de sa vie ? ²⁸ Et pourquoi vous inquiétez-vous pour le vêtement ? Observez les lis des champs, comment ils croissent : il ne peinent ni ne filent. ²⁹ Or je vous dis que Salomon même, dans toute sa gloire, n'était pas vêtu comme l'un d'eux. ³⁰ Si donc Dieu revêt ainsi l'herbe des champs, qui est aujourd'hui et demain sera jetée au four, ne (le fera-t-il) pas bien plus pour vous, gens de peu de foi ? ³¹ Ne vous mettez donc point en peine, disant : que mangerons-nous ou que boirons-nous, ou de quoi nous vêtirons-nous ? ³² ‒ c'est de tout cela en effet que les païens sont en quête, ‒ car votre Père céleste sait que vous avez besoin de tout cela. ³³ Cherchez premièrement le royaume [de Dieu] et sa justice, et tout cela vous sera donné en plus. ³⁴ N'ayez donc point de souci du lendemain, car le lendemain aura souci de lui-même : à chaque jour suffit sa peine.

Matthieu 7

¹ Ne jugez point afin de n'être point jugés, ² car de la façon dont vous jugez, vous serez jugés, et avec la mesure dont vous mesurez il vous sera mesuré. ³ Pourquoi regardes-tu la paille qui est dans l'oeil de ton frère, et ne remarques-tu la poutre qui est dans ton oeil ? ⁴ Ou comment (peux-tu) dire à ton frère : "laisse-moi ôter la paille de ton oeil, " lorsqu'il y a une poutre dans ton oeil ? ⁵ Hypocrite, ôte d'abord la poutre de ton oeil, et alors tu verras à ôter la paille de l'oeil de ton frère. ⁶ Ne donnez pas aux chiens ce qui est saint, et ne jetez pas vos perles devant les porcs, de peur qu'il ne les foulent aux pieds, et que, se retournant, ils ne vous déchirent. ⁷ Demandez et l'on vous donnera ; cherchez et vous trouverez ; frappez et l'on vous ouvrira. ⁸ Car quiconque demande reçoit, qui cherche trouve, et l'on ouvrira à qui frappe. ⁹ Y a-t-il parmi vous un homme qui, si son fils lui demande du pain, lui donnera une pierre ? ¹⁰ Ou, s'il demande un poisson, lui donnera-t-il un serpent ? ¹¹ Si donc vous, tout méchants que vous êtes, vous savez donner de bonnes choses à vos enfants, combien plus votre Père qui est dans les cieux donnera-t-il ce qui est bon à ceux qui lui demandent. ¹² Donc, tout ce que vous voulez que les hommes vous fassent, faites-le aussi pour eux ; car c'est la Loi et les Prophètes. ¹³ Entrez par la porte étroite ; car large est la porte, et spacieuse la voie qui conduit à la perdition, et nombreux sont ceux qui y passent ; ¹⁴ car étroite est la porte, et resserrée la voie qui conduit à la vie, et il en est peu qui la trouvent ! ¹⁵ Gardez-vous des faux prophètes qui viennent à vous sous des vêtements de brebis, mais au dedans sont des loups rapaces. ¹⁶ C'est à leurs fruits que vous les reconnaîtrez : cueille-t-on du raisin sur les épines, ou des figues sur les ronces ? ¹⁷ Ainsi tout arbre bon porte de bons fruits, et tout arbre mauvais porte de mauvais fruits. ¹⁸ Un arbre bon ne peut porter de mauvais fruits, ni un arbre mauvais porter de bons fruits. ¹⁹ Tout arbre qui ne porte pas de bons fruits, on le coupe et on le jette au feu. ²⁰ Donc, c'est à leurs fruits que vous les reconnaîtrez. ²¹ Ce n'est pas celui qui m'aura dit : "Seigneur, Seigneur !" qui entrera dans le royaume des cieux, mais celui qui aura fait la volonté de mon Père qui est dans les cieux. ²² Beaucoup me diront en ce jour-là : "Seigneur, Seigneur ! n'est-ce pas en votre nom que nous avons prophétisé ? n'est-ce pas en votre nom que nous avons chassé les démons ? et n'avons-nous pas, en votre nom, fait beaucoup de miracles ?" ²³ Alors je leur dirai hautement : Je ne vous ai jamais connus. Eloignez-vous de moi, artisans d'iniquité ! ²⁴ Quiconque donc entend ces paroles que je dis, et les met en pratique, sera semblable à un homme sensé, qui a bâti sa maison sur le roc : ²⁵ la pluie est tombée, les torrents sont venus, les vents on soufflé et se sont déchaînés contre cette maison, et elle n'a pas été renversée, car elle avait été fondée sur la pierre. ²⁶ Et quiconque entend ces paroles que je dis, et ne les met pas en pratique, sera semblable à un insensé, qui a bâti sa maison sur le sable : ²⁷ la pluie est tombée, les torrents sont venus, les vents ont soufflé et ont battu cette maison, et elle est tombée, et grande a été sa chute." ²⁸ Or, quand jésus eut achevé ce discours, les foules étaient dans l'admiration pour son enseignement : ²⁹ car il les enseignait comme ayant autorité, et non comme leurs scribes.

   ¹ And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: ² And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

   ¹⁷ Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. ¹⁸ For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. ¹⁹ Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰ For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
   ²¹ Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: ²² But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. ²³ Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; ²⁴ Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. ²⁵ Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. ²⁶ Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
   ²⁷ Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: ²⁸ But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. ²⁹ And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. ³⁰ And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. ³¹ It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: ³² But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
   ³³ Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: ³⁴ But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: ³⁵ Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. ³⁶ Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. ³⁷ But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
   ³⁸ Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: ³⁹ But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. ⁴⁰ And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. ⁴¹ And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. ⁴² Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
   ⁴³ Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. ⁴⁴ But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; ⁴⁵ That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. ⁴⁶ For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? ⁴⁷ And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? ⁴⁸ Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

   ¹ Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. ² Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. ³ But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: ⁴ That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
   ⁵ And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. ⁶ But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. ⁷ But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. ⁸ Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
   ⁹ After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. ¹⁰ Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. ¹¹ Give us this day our daily bread. ¹² And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. ¹³ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. ¹⁴ For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: ¹⁵ But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
   ¹⁶ Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. ¹⁷ But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; ¹⁸ That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
   ¹⁹ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: ²⁰ But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: ²¹ For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. ²² The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. ²³ But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! ²⁴ No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
   ²⁵ Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? ²⁶ Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? ²⁷ Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? ²⁸ And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: ²⁹ And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. ³⁰ Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? ³¹ Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? ³² (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. ³³ But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. ³⁴ Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Matthieu 7

   ¹ Judge not, that ye be not judged. ² For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. ³ And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? ⁴ Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? ⁵ Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. ⁶ Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
   ⁷ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: ⁸ For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. ⁹ Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? ¹⁰ Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? ¹¹ If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
   ¹² Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. ¹³ Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: ¹⁴ Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
   ¹⁵ Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. ¹⁶ Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? ¹⁷ Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. ¹⁹ Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. ²⁰ Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
   ²¹ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. ²² Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? ²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. ²⁴ Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: ²⁵ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. ²⁶ And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: ²⁷ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. ²⁸ And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: ²⁹ For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
