   ¹ And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: ² And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
   ³ Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ⁴ Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. ⁵ Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. ⁶ Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. ⁷ Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. ⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. ⁹ Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. ¹⁰ Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ¹¹ Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. ¹² Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
   ¹³ Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. ¹⁴ Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. ¹⁵ Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. ¹⁶ Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
   ¹⁷ Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. ¹⁸ For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. ¹⁹ Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰ For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
   ²¹ Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: ²² But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. ²³ Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; ²⁴ Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. ²⁵ Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. ²⁶ Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
   ²⁷ Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: ²⁸ But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. ²⁹ And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. ³⁰ And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. ³¹ It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: ³² But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
   ³³ Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: ³⁴ But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: ³⁵ Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. ³⁶ Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. ³⁷ But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
   ³⁸ Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: ³⁹ But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. ⁴⁰ And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. ⁴¹ And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. ⁴² Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
   ⁴³ Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. ⁴⁴ But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; ⁴⁵ That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. ⁴⁶ For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? ⁴⁷ And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? ⁴⁸ Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

   ¹ Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. ² Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. ³ But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: ⁴ That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
   ⁵ And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. ⁶ But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. ⁷ But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. ⁸ Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
   ⁹ After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. ¹⁰ Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. ¹¹ Give us this day our daily bread. ¹² And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. ¹³ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. ¹⁴ For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: ¹⁵ But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
   ¹⁶ Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. ¹⁷ But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; ¹⁸ That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
   ¹⁹ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: ²⁰ But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: ²¹ For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. ²² The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. ²³ But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! ²⁴ No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
   ²⁵ Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? ²⁶ Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? ²⁷ Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? ²⁸ And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: ²⁹ And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. ³⁰ Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? ³¹ Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? ³² (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. ³³ But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. ³⁴ Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

   ¹ Judge not, that ye be not judged. ² For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. ³ And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? ⁴ Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? ⁵ Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. ⁶ Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
   ⁷ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: ⁸ For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. ⁹ Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? ¹⁰ Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? ¹¹ If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
   ¹² Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. ¹³ Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: ¹⁴ Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
   ¹⁵ Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. ¹⁶ Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? ¹⁷ Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. ¹⁹ Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. ²⁰ Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Christ et la loi

¹ A la vue de ces foules, Jésus monta sur la montagne. Il s'assit et ses disciples s'approchèrent de lui. ² Puis il prit la parole pour les enseigner; il dit:
³ «Heureux ceux qui reconnaissent leur pauvreté spirituelle, car le royaume des cieux leur appartient! ⁴ Heureux ceux qui pleurent, car ils seront consolés! ⁵ Heureux ceux qui sont doux, car ils hériteront la terre! ⁶ Heureux ceux qui ont faim et soif de la justice, car ils seront rassasiés! ⁷ Heureux ceux qui font preuve de bonté, car on aura de la bonté pour eux! ⁸ Heureux ceux qui ont le cœur pur, car ils verront Dieu! ⁹ Heureux ceux qui procurent la paix, car ils seront appelés fils de Dieu! ¹⁰ Heureux ceux qui sont persécutés pour la justice, car le royaume des cieux leur appartient! ¹¹ Heureux serez-vous lorsqu'on vous insultera, qu'on vous persécutera et qu'on dira faussement de vous toute sorte de mal à cause de moi. ¹² Réjouissez-vous et soyez dans l'allégresse, parce que votre récompense sera grande au ciel. En effet, c'est ainsi qu'on a persécuté les prophètes qui vous ont précédés.
¹³ »Vous êtes le sel de la terre. Mais si le sel perd sa saveur, avec quoi la lui rendra-t-on? Il ne sert plus qu'à être jeté dehors et piétiné par les hommes. ¹⁴ Vous êtes la lumière du monde. Une ville située sur une montagne ne peut pas être cachée, ¹⁵ et on n'allume pas non plus une lampe pour la mettre sous un seau, mais on la met sur son support et elle éclaire tous ceux qui sont dans la maison. ¹⁶ Que, de la même manière, votre lumière brille devant les hommes afin qu'ils voient votre belle manière d'agir et qu'ainsi ils célèbrent la gloire de votre Père céleste.
¹⁷ »Ne croyez pas que je sois venu pour abolir la loi ou les prophètes; je suis venu non pour abolir, mais pour accomplir. ¹⁸ En effet, je vous le dis en vérité, tant que le ciel et la terre n'auront pas disparu, pas une seule lettre ni un seul trait de lettre ne disparaîtra de la loi avant que tout ne soit arrivé. ¹⁹ Celui donc qui violera l'un de ces plus petits commandements et qui enseignera aux hommes à faire de même sera appelé le plus petit dans le royaume des cieux; mais celui qui les mettra en pratique et les enseignera aux autres, celui-là sera appelé grand dans le royaume des cieux. ²⁰ En effet, je vous le dis, si votre justice ne dépasse pas celle des spécialistes de la loi et des pharisiens, vous n'entrerez pas dans le royaume des cieux.
²¹ »Vous avez appris qu'il a été dit aux anciens: ‘Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre ; celui qui commet un meurtre mérite de passer en jugement.' ²² Mais moi je vous dis: Tout homme qui se met [sans raison] en colère contre son frère mérite de passer en jugement; celui qui traite son frère d'imbécile mérite d'être puni par le tribunal, et celui qui le traite de fou mérite d'être puni par le feu de l'enfer. ²³ Si donc tu présentes ton offrande vers l'autel et que là tu te souviennes que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi, ²⁴ laisse ton offrande devant l'autel et va d'abord te réconcilier avec ton frère, puis viens présenter ton offrande. ²⁵ Mets-toi rapidement d'accord avec ton adversaire, pendant que tu es en chemin avec lui, de peur qu'il ne te livre au juge, que le juge ne te livre à l'officier de justice et que tu ne sois mis en prison. ²⁶ Je te le dis en vérité, tu n'en sortiras pas avant d'avoir remboursé jusqu'au dernier centime.
²⁷ »Vous avez appris qu'il a été dit: Tu ne commettras pas d'adultère.  ²⁸ Mais moi je vous dis: Tout homme qui regarde une femme pour la convoiter a déjà commis un adultère avec elle dans son cœur. ²⁹ Si ton œil droit te pousse à mal agir, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi, car il vaut mieux pour toi subir la perte d'un seul de tes membres que de voir ton corps entier jeté en enfer. ³⁰ Et si ta main droite te pousse à mal agir, coupe-la et jette-la loin de toi, car il vaut mieux pour toi subir la perte d'un seul de tes membres que de voir ton corps entier jeté en enfer.
³¹ »Il a été dit: Que celui qui renvoie sa femme lui donne une lettre de divorce.  ³² Mais moi, je vous dis: Celui qui renvoie sa femme, sauf pour cause d'infidélité, l'expose à devenir adultère, et celui qui épouse une femme divorcée commet un adultère.
³³ »Vous avez encore appris qu'il a été dit aux anciens: Tu ne violeras pas ton serment, mais tu accompliras ce que tu as promis au Seigneur.  ³⁴ Mais moi je vous dis de ne pas jurer du tout, ni par le ciel, parce que c'est le trône de Dieu, ³⁵ ni par la terre, parce que c'est son marchepied, ni par Jérusalem, parce que c'est la ville du grand roi. ³⁶ Ne jure pas non plus par ta tête, car tu ne peux pas rendre blanc ou noir un seul cheveu. ³⁷ Que votre parole soit ‘oui' pour oui, ‘non' pour non; ce qu'on y ajoute vient du mal.
³⁸ »Vous avez appris qu'il a été dit: Œil pour œil et dent pour dent.  ³⁹ Mais moi je vous dis de ne pas résister au méchant. Si quelqu'un te gifle sur la joue droite, tends-lui aussi l'autre. ⁴⁰ Si quelqu'un veut te faire un procès et prendre ta chemise, laisse-lui encore ton manteau. ⁴¹ Si quelqu'un te force à faire un kilomètre, fais-en deux avec lui. ⁴² Donne à celui qui t'adresse une demande et ne te détourne pas de celui qui veut te faire un emprunt.
⁴³ »Vous avez appris qu'il a été dit: ‘Tu aimeras ton prochain et tu détesteras ton ennemi.' ⁴⁴ Mais moi je vous dis: Aimez vos ennemis, [bénissez ceux qui vous maudissent, faites du bien à ceux qui vous détestent] et priez pour ceux [qui vous maltraitent et] qui vous persécutent, ⁴⁵ afin d'être les fils de votre Père céleste. En effet, il fait lever son soleil sur les méchants et sur les bons, et il fait pleuvoir sur les justes et sur les injustes. ⁴⁶ Si vous aimez ceux qui vous aiment, quelle récompense méritez-vous? Les collecteurs d'impôts n'agissent-ils pas de même? ⁴⁷ Et si vous saluez seulement vos frères, que faites-vous d'extraordinaire? Les membres des autres peuples n'agissent-ils pas de même? ⁴⁸ Soyez donc parfaits comme votre Père céleste est parfait.

Les biens matériels

¹ »Gardez-vous bien de faire des dons devant les hommes pour qu'ils vous regardent; sinon, vous n'aurez pas de récompense auprès de votre Père céleste. ² Donc, lorsque tu fais un don à quelqu'un, ne sonne pas de la trompette devant toi, comme le font les hypocrites dans les synagogues et dans les rues afin de recevoir la gloire qui vient des hommes. Je vous le dis en vérité, ils ont leur récompense. ³ Mais toi, quand tu fais un don, que ta main gauche ne sache pas ce que fait ta droite, ⁴ afin que ton don se fasse en secret; et ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra [lui-même ouvertement].
⁵ »Lorsque tu pries, ne sois pas comme les hypocrites: ils aiment prier debout dans les synagogues et aux coins des rues pour être vus des hommes. Je vous le dis en vérité, ils ont leur récompense. ⁶ Mais toi, quand tu pries, entre dans ta chambre, ferme ta porte et prie ton Père qui est là dans le lieu secret; et ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra[ouvertement].
⁷ »En priant, ne multipliez pas les paroles comme les membres des autres peuples: ils s'imaginent en effet qu'à force de paroles ils seront exaucés. ⁸ Ne les imitez pas, car votre Père sait de quoi vous avez besoin avant que vous le lui demandiez.
⁹ »Voici donc comment vous devez prier: ‘Notre Père céleste! Que la sainteté de ton nom soit respectée, ¹⁰ que ton règne vienne, que ta volonté soit faite sur la terre comme au ciel. ¹¹ Donne-nous aujourd'hui notre pain quotidien; ¹² pardonne-nous nos offenses, comme nous aussi nous pardonnons à ceux qui nous ont offensés; ¹³ ne nous expose pas à la tentation, mais délivre-nous du mal, [car c'est à toi qu'appartiennent, dans tous les siècles, le règne, la puissance et la gloire. Amen!]'
¹⁴ »Si vous pardonnez aux hommes leurs fautes, votre Père céleste vous pardonnera aussi; ¹⁵ mais si vous ne pardonnez pas aux hommes, votre Père ne vous pardonnera pas non plus vos fautes.
¹⁶ »Lorsque vous jeûnez, ne prenez pas un air triste comme les hypocrites. En effet, ils présentent un visage tout défait pour montrer aux hommes qu'ils jeûnent. Je vous le dis en vérité, ils ont leur récompense. ¹⁷ Mais toi, quand tu jeûnes, parfume ta tête et lave ton visage ¹⁸ afin de ne pas montrer que tu jeûnes aux hommes, mais à ton Père qui est là dans le lieu secret; et ton Père, qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra.
¹⁹ »Ne vous amassez pas des trésors sur la terre, où les mites et la rouille détruisent et où les voleurs percent les murs pour voler, ²⁰ mais amassez-vous des trésors dans le ciel, où les mites et la rouille ne détruisent pas et où les voleurs ne peuvent pas percer les murs ni voler! ²¹ En effet, là où est ton trésor, là aussi sera ton cœur.
²² »L'œil est la lampe du corps. Si ton œil est en bon état, tout ton corps sera éclairé; ²³ mais si ton œil est en mauvais état, tout ton corps sera dans les ténèbres. Si donc la lumière qui est en toi est ténèbres, combien ces ténèbres seront grandes!
²⁴ »Personne ne peut servir deux maîtres, car ou il détestera le premier et aimera le second, ou il s'attachera au premier et méprisera le second. Vous ne pouvez pas servir Dieu et l'argent.
²⁵ »C'est pourquoi je vous dis: Ne vous inquiétez pas de ce que vous mangerez [et boirez]pour vivre, ni de ce dont vous habillerez votre corps. La vie n'est-elle pas plus que la nourriture et le corps plus que le vêtement? ²⁶ Regardez les oiseaux du ciel: ils ne sèment pas et ne moissonnent pas, ils n'amassent rien dans des greniers, et votre Père céleste les nourrit. Ne valez-vous pas beaucoup plus qu'eux? ²⁷ Qui de vous, par ses inquiétudes, peut ajouter un instant à la durée de sa vie? ²⁸ Et pourquoi vous inquiéter au sujet du vêtement? Etudiez comment poussent les plus belles fleurs des champs: elles ne travaillent pas et ne tissent pas; ²⁹ cependant je vous dis que Salomon lui-même, dans toute sa gloire, n'a pas eu d'aussi belles tenues que l'une d'elles. ³⁰ Si Dieu habille ainsi l'herbe des champs, qui existe aujourd'hui et qui demain sera jetée au feu, ne le fera-t-il pas bien plus volontiers pour vous, gens de peu de foi? ³¹ Ne vous inquiétez donc pas et ne dites pas: ‘Que mangerons-nous? Que boirons-nous? Avec quoi nous habillerons-nous?' ³² En effet, tout cela, ce sont les membres des autres peuples qui le recherchent. Or, votre Père céleste sait que vous en avez besoin. ³³ Recherchez d'abord le royaume et la justice de Dieu, et tout cela vous sera donné en plus. ³⁴ Ne vous inquiétez donc pas du lendemain, car le lendemain prendra soin de lui-même. A chaque jour suffit sa peine.

¹ »Ne jugez pas afin de ne pas être jugés, ² car on vous jugera de la même manière que vous aurez jugé et on utilisera pour vous la mesure dont vous vous serez servis. ³ Pourquoi vois-tu la paille qui est dans l'œil de ton frère et ne remarques-tu pas la poutre qui est dans ton œil? ⁴ Ou comment peux-tu dire à ton frère: ‘Laisse-moi enlever la paille de ton œil', alors que toi, tu as une poutre dans le tien? ⁵ Hypocrite, enlève d'abord la poutre de ton œil, et alors tu verras clair pour retirer la paille de l'œil de ton frère.
⁶ »Ne donnez pas les choses saintes aux chiens et ne jetez pas vos perles devant les porcs, de peur qu'ils ne les piétinent et qu'ils ne se retournent pour vous déchirer.
⁷ »Demandez et l'on vous donnera, cherchez et vous trouverez, frappez et l'on vous ouvrira. ⁸ En effet, toute personne qui demande reçoit, celui qui cherche trouve et l'on ouvre à celui qui frappe. ⁹ Qui parmi vous donnera une pierre à son fils, s'il lui demande du pain? ¹⁰ Ou s'il demande un poisson, lui donnera-t-il un serpent? ¹¹ Si donc, mauvais comme vous l'êtes, vous savez donner de bonnes choses à vos enfants, votre Père céleste donnera d'autant plus volontiers de bonnes choses à ceux qui les lui demandent.
¹² »Tout ce que vous voudriez que les hommes fassent pour vous, vous aussi, faites-le de même pour eux, car c'est ce qu'enseignent la loi et les prophètes.
¹³ »Entrez par la porte étroite! En effet, large est la porte, spacieux le chemin menant à la perdition, et il y en a beaucoup qui entrent par là, ¹⁴ mais étroite est la porte, resserré le chemin menant à la vie, et il y en a peu qui les trouvent.
¹⁵ »Méfiez-vous des prétendus prophètes! Ils viennent à vous en vêtements de brebis, mais au-dedans ce sont des loups voraces. ¹⁶ Vous les reconnaîtrez à leurs fruits. Cueille-t-on des raisins sur des ronces ou des figues sur des chardons? ¹⁷ Tout bon arbre produit de bons fruits, mais le mauvais arbre produit de mauvais fruits. ¹⁸ Un bon arbre ne peut pas porter de mauvais fruits, ni un mauvais arbre porter de bons fruits. ¹⁹ Tout arbre qui ne produit pas de bons fruits est coupé et jeté au feu. ²⁰ C'est donc à leurs fruits que vous les reconnaîtrez.
²¹ »Ceux qui me disent: ‘Seigneur, Seigneur!' n'entreront pas tous dans le royaume des cieux, mais seulement celui qui fait la volonté de mon Père céleste. ²² Beaucoup me diront ce jour-là: ‘Seigneur, Seigneur, n'avons-nous pas prophétisé en ton nom? N'avons-nous pas chassé des démons en ton nom? N'avons-nous pas fait beaucoup de miracles en ton nom?' ²³ Alors je leur dirai ouvertement: ‘Je ne vous ai jamais connus. Eloignez-vous de moi, vous qui commettez le mal!'
²⁴ »C'est pourquoi, toute personne qui entend ces paroles que je dis et les met en pratique, je la comparerai à un homme prudent qui a construit sa maison sur le rocher. ²⁵ La pluie est tombée, les torrents sont venus, les vents ont soufflé et se sont déchaînés contre cette maison; elle ne s'est pas écroulée, parce qu'elle était fondée sur le rocher. ²⁶ Mais toute personne qui entend ces paroles que je dis et ne les met pas en pratique ressemblera à un fou qui a construit sa maison sur le sable. ²⁷ La pluie est tombée, les torrents sont venus, les vents ont soufflé et se sont abattus sur cette maison; elle s'est écroulée et sa ruine a été grande.»
²⁸ Quand Jésus eut fini de prononcer ces paroles, les foules restèrent frappées par son enseignement, ²⁹ car il enseignait avec autorité, et non comme leurs spécialistes de la loi.
