¹ Yahweh parla à Moïse et à Aaron, en disant : ² "Voici l'ordonnance de la loi que Yahweh a prescrite, en disant : dis aux enfants d'Israël de t'amener une vache rousse, sans tache, sans défaut corporel, et qui n'ait point porté le joug. ³ Vous la remettrez au prêtre Éléazar, qui la fera sortir du camp, et on l'égorgera devant lui. ⁴ Le prêtre Éléazar prendra du sang de la vache avec le doigt, et il fera sept fois l'aspersion de ce sang du côté de l'entrée de la tente de réunion. ⁵ On brûlera la vache sous ses yeux ; on brûlera sa peau, sa chair et son sang, ainsi que ses excréments. ⁶ Le prêtre prendra du bois de cèdre, de l'hysope et du cramoisi, et il les jettera au milieu du feu qui consume la vache. ⁷ Le prêtre lavera ses vêtements et baignera son corps dans l'eau ; puis il rentrera dans le camp et sera impur jusqu'au soir. ⁸ Celui qui aura brûlé la vache lavera ses vêtements dans l'eau, et baignera son corps dans l'eau, et il sera impur jusqu'au soir. ⁹ Un homme pur recueillera la cendre de la vache et la déposera hors du camp, dans un lieu pur ; on la conservera pour l'assemblée des enfants d'Israël, en vue de l'eau qui ôte la souillure : c'est un sacrifice pour le péché. ¹⁰ Celui qui aura recueilli la cendre de la vache lavera ses vêtements, et sera impur jusqu'au soir. ‒ Ce sera une loi perpétuelle pour les enfants d'Israël et pour l'étranger qui séjourne au milieu d'eux.

   ¹ And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, ² This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD hath commanded, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke: ³ And ye shall give her unto Eleazar the priest, that he may bring her forth without the camp, and one shall slay her before his face: ⁴ And Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood directly before the tabernacle of the congregation seven times: ⁵ And one shall burn the heifer in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn: ⁶ And the priest shall take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer. ⁷ Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even. ⁸ And he that burneth her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even. ⁹ And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of separation: it is a purification for sin. ¹⁰ And he that gathereth the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them, for a statute for ever.

   ² Ista est religio victimæ, quam constituit Dominus. Præcipe filiis Israël, ut adducant ad te vaccam rufam ætatis integræ, in qua nulla sit macula, nec portaverit jugum :
   ³ tradetisque eam Eleazaro sacerdoti, qui eductam extra castra, immolabit in conspectu omnium :
   ⁴ et tingens digitum in sanguine ejus, asperget contra fores tabernaculi septem vicibus,
   ⁵ comburetque eam cunctis videntibus, tam pelle et carnibus ejus quam sanguine et fimo flammæ traditis.
   ⁶ Lignum quoque cedrinum, et hyssopum, coccumque bis tinctum sacerdos mittet in flammam, quæ vaccam vorat.
   ⁷ Et tunc demum, lotis vestibus et corpore suo, ingredietur in castra, commaculatusque erit usque ad vesperum.
   ⁸ Sed et ille qui combusserit eam, lavabit vestimenta sua et corpus, et immundus erit usque ad vesperum.
   ⁹ Colliget autem vir mundus cineres vaccæ, et effundet eos extra castra in loco purissimo, ut sint multitudini filiorum Israël in custodiam, et in aquam aspersionis : quia pro peccato vacca combusta est.
   ¹⁰ Cumque laverit qui vaccæ portaverat cineres vestimenta sua, immundus erit usque ad vesperum. Habebunt hoc filii Israël, et advenæ qui habitant inter eos, sanctum jure perpetuo.
