   ⁸ Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned. ⁹ Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not. ¹⁰ And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this. ¹¹ Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria. ¹² When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard. ¹³ Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: destruction unto them! because they have transgressed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against me. ¹⁴ And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me. ¹⁵ Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me. ¹⁶ They return, but not to the most High: they are like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.

⁸ Ephraïm se mêle avec les peuples, Ephraïm est un gâteau qui n'a pas été retourné. ⁹ Des étrangers consument sa force, Et il ne s'en doute pas; La vieillesse s'empare de lui, Et il ne s'en doute pas. ¹⁰ L'orgueil d'Israël témoigne contre lui; Ils ne reviennent pas à l'Eternel, leur Dieu, Et ils ne le cherchent pas, malgré tout cela. ¹¹ Ephraïm est comme une colombe stupide, sans intelligence; Ils implorent l'Egypte, ils vont en Assyrie. ¹² S'ils partent, j'étendrai sur eux mon filet, Je les précipiterai comme les oiseaux du ciel; Je les châtierai, comme ils en ont été avertis dans leur assemblée. ¹³ Malheur à eux, parce qu'ils me fuient! Ruine sur eux, parce qu'ils me sont infidèles! Je voudrais les sauver, Mais ils disent contre moi des paroles mensongères. ¹⁴ Ils ne crient pas vers moi dans leur cœur, Mais ils se lamentent sur leur couche; Ils se rassemblent pour avoir du blé et du moût, Et ils s'éloignent de moi. ¹⁵ Je les ai châtiés, j'ai fortifié leurs bras; Et ils méditent le mal contre moi. ¹⁶ Ce n'est pas au Très-Haut qu'ils retournent; Ils sont comme un arc trompeur. Leurs chefs tomberont par l'épée, A cause de l'insolence de leur langue. C'est ce qui les rendra un objet de risée dans le pays d'Egypte.

   ⁸ Ephraim in populis ipse commiscebatur ;
Ephraim factus est subcinericius panis, qui non reversatur.
   ⁹ Comederunt alieni robur ejus, et ipse nescivit ;
sed et cani effusi sunt in eo, et ipse ignoravit.
   ¹⁰ Et humiliabitur superbia Israël in facie ejus ;
nec reversi sunt ad Dominum Deum suum,
et non quæsierunt eum in omnibus his.
   ¹¹ Et factus est Ephraim quasi columba seducta non habens cor.
Ægyptum invocabant ; ad Assyrios abierunt.
   ¹² Et cum profecti fuerint,
expandam super eos rete meum :
quasi volucrem cæli detraham eos ;
cædam eos secundum auditionem cœtus eorum.
   ¹³ Væ eis, quoniam recesserunt a me !
vastabuntur, quia prævaricati sunt in me,
et ego redemi eos,
et ipsi locuti sunt contra me mendacia.
   ¹⁴ Et non clamaverunt ad me in corde suo,
sed ululabant in cubilibus suis :
super triticum et vinum ruminabant ;
recesserunt a me.
   ¹⁵ Et ego erudivi eos, et confortavi brachia eorum,
et in me cogitaverunt malitiam.
   ¹⁶ Reversi sunt ut essent absque jugo ;
facti sunt quasi arcus dolosus :
cadent in gladio principes eorum, a furore linguæ suæ.
