¹ Il y avait un homme de Ramathaïm-Sophim, de la montagne d'Éphraïm, nommé Elcana, fils de Jéroham, fils d'Eliu, fils de Thohu, fils de Suph, Ephratéen. ² Il avait deux femmes, dont l'une s'appelait Anne, et l'autre Phénenna ; et Phénenna avait des enfants, mais Anne était sans enfants. ³ Cet homme montait de sa ville, chaque année, pour adorer Yahweh des armées et lui offrir des sacrifices à Silo. Là étaient les deux fils d'Héli, Ophni et Phinées, prêtres de Yahweh. ⁴ Le jour où Elcana offrait son sacrifice, il donnait des portions de la victime à Phénenna, sa femme, et à tous ses fils et à toutes ses filles ; ⁵ et il donnait à Anne une double portion, car il aimait Anne, et Yahweh l'avait rendue stérile. ⁶ Sa rivale l'affligeait encore extrêmement, afin de l'aigrir de ce que Yahweh l'avait rendue stérile. ⁷ Et chaque année Elcana faisait ainsi, toutes les fois qu'elle montait à la maison de Yahweh, et Phénenna la mortifiait de la même manière. Alors elle pleurait et ne mangeait point. ⁸ Elcana, son mari, lui disait : « Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu et ne manges-tu pas ? Pourquoi ton coeur est-il triste ? Est-ce que je ne suis pas pour toi mieux que dix fils ? » ⁹ Anne se leva, après qu'on eut mangé et bu à Silo, ‒ Héli, le grand prêtre, était assis sur un siège devant un des poteaux du temple de Yahweh. ‒ ¹⁰ L'âme pleine d'amertume, elle pria Yahweh et versa beaucoup de larmes ; ¹¹ et elle fit un voeu, en disant : « Yahweh des armées, si vous daignez regarder l'affliction de votre servante, si vous vous souvenez de moi et n'oubliez point votre servante, et si vous donnez à votre servante un enfant mâle, je le donnerai à Yahweh pour tous les jours de sa vie, et le rasoir ne passera pas sur sa tête. » ¹² Comme elle restait longtemps en prière devant Yahweh, Héli observa sa bouche. ¹³ Anne parlait en son coeur et remuait seulement les lèvres, sans que sa voix se fit entendre. ¹⁴ Héli pensa donc qu'elle était ivre, et il lui dit : « Jusques à quand seras-tu dans l'ivresse ? Fais passer ton vin. » ¹⁵ Anne répondit : « Non, mon seigneur je suis une femme affligée dans son coeur ; je n'ai bu ni vin ni boisson enivrante, mais j'épanchais mon âme devant Yahweh. ¹⁶ Ne prends pas ta servante pour une femme de Bélial, car c'est dans l'excès de ma peine et de ma douleur que j'ai parlé jusqu'ici. » ¹⁷ Héli reprit la parole et lui dit : « Va en paix, et que le Dieu d'Israël exauce la prière que tu lui as adressée ! » ¹⁸ Elle dit : « Que ta servante trouve grâce à tes yeux ! » Et cette femme alla son chemin ; elle mangea, et son visage n'était plus le même. ¹⁹ Ils se levèrent de bon matin et, s'étant prosternés devant Yahweh, ils s'en retournèrent et revinrent dans leur maison à Rama. ²⁰ Elcana connut Anne, sa femme, et Yahweh se souvint d'elle. Après le temps révolu, Anne ayant conçu, enfanta un fils, qu'elle nomma Samuel, « car, dit-elle, je l'ai demandé à Yahweh. » ²¹ Son mari Elcana monta avec toute sa maison pour offrir à Yahweh le sacrifice annuel et pour accomplir son voeu. ²² Mais Anne ne monta pas, et elle dit à son mari : « Quand l'enfant sera sevré, je le mènerai pour qu'il paraisse devant Yahweh et qu'il demeure là toujours. » ²³ Elcana, son mari, lui dit : « Fais ce qui te semblera bon, reste ici jusqu'à ce que tu l'aies sevré. Daigne seulement Yahweh accomplir sa parole ! » Et la femme resta et allaita son fils, jusqu'à ce qu'elle le sevrât. ²⁴ Quand elle l'eut sevré, elle le fit monter avec elle, ayant pris un taureau de trois ans, un épha de farine et une outre de vin, et elle le mena dans la maison de Yahweh à Silo ; l'enfant était encore tout jeune. ²⁵ Ils égorgèrent le taureau, et ils conduisirent l'enfant à Héli. ²⁶ Anne dit : « Pardon, mon seigneur. Aussi vrai que ton âme vit, mon seigneur, je suis cette femme qui me tenais ici près de toi pour prier Yahweh. ²⁷ C'est pour cet enfant que je priais, et Yahweh m'a accordé la demande que je lui avais faite. ²⁸ Moi aussi je le donne à Yahweh ; tous les jours de sa vie, il sera donné à Yahweh. » Et ils se prosternèrent là devant Yahweh.

1 Samuel 2

¹ Anne pria et dit : Mon coeur tressaille de joie en Yahweh, ma corne a été élevée par Yahweh, ma bouche est ouverte sur mes ennemis, car je me suis réjouie de ton secours. ² Nul n'est saint comme Yahweh, car il n'y a pas d'autre Dieu que toi ; il n'y a pas de rocher comme notre Dieu. ³ Ne prononcez pas tant de paroles hautaines, qu'un langage arrogant ne sorte pas de votre bouche. Car Yahweh est un Dieu qui sait tout, et les actions de l'homme ne subsistent pas. ⁴ L'arc des puissants est brisé, et les faibles ont la force pour ceinture. ⁵ Ceux qui étaient rassasiés se louent pour du pain, et ceux qui étaient affamés n'ont plus faim ; même la stérile enfante sept fois, et celle qui avait beaucoup de fils se flétrit. ⁶ Yahweh fait mourir et il fait vivre, il fait descendre au séjour des morts et il en fait remonter. ⁷ Yahweh appauvrit et il enrichit, il abaisse et il élève. ⁸ De la poussière il retire le pauvre, du fumier il relève l'indigent, pour les faire asseoir avec les princes, et il leur donne en partage un trône de gloire. Car à Yahweh sont les colonnes de la terre, et sur elles il a posé le globe. ⁹ Il gardera les pas de ses pieux, mais les méchants périront dans les ténèbres. Car l'homme ne l'emportera pas par la force. Yahweh ! Ses ennemis seront brisés ; ¹⁰ du haut du ciel il tonnera sur eux, Yahweh jugera les extrémités de la terre. Il donnera la puissance à son roi, et il élèvera la corne de son oint. ¹¹ Elcana s'en alla dans sa maison à Rama, et l'enfant resta au service de Yahweh, devant le prêtre Héli. ¹² Or les fils d'Héli étaient des hommes de Bélial, ils ne connaissaient point Yahweh. ¹³ Et voici la manière d'agir de ces prêtres à l'égard du peuple. Lorsque quelqu'un offrait un sacrifice, le serviteur du prêtre venait, pendant qu'on faisait bouillir la chair, tenant à la main une fourchette à trois dents ; ¹⁴ il la plongeait dans la chaudière, dans le chaudron, dans la marmite ou dans le pot, et tout ce que la fourchette amenait, le prêtre le prenait pour lui. C'est ainsi qu'ils agissaient à l'égard de tous les Israélites qui venaient là, à Silo. ¹⁵ Même avant qu'on fît brûler la graisse, le serviteur du prêtre venait et disait à l'homme qui offrait le sacrifice : « Donne-moi de la chair à rôtir pour le prêtre ; il ne recevra pas de toi de chair bouillie, mais seulement de la chair crue. » ¹⁶ Et si l'homme lui disait : « Qu'on fasse d'abord fumer la graisse ; tu prendras ensuite ce que tu voudras, » le serviteur répondait : « Non, tu en donneras maintenant ; sinon, j'en prendrai de force. » ¹⁷ Le péché de ces jeunes gens était très grand devant Yahweh, parce que ces hommes attiraient le mépris sur les offrandes de Yahweh. ¹⁸ Samuel faisait le service devant Yahweh : l'enfant était revêtu d'un éphod de lin. ¹⁹ Sa mère lui faisait une petite robe, qu'elle lui apportait chaque année, lorsqu'elle montait avec son mari, pour offrir le sacrifice annuel. ²⁰ Héli bénit Elcana et sa femme, en disant : « Que Yahweh te donne des enfants de cette femme, pour le don qu'elle a fait à Yahweh ! » Et ils s'en retournèrent chez eux. ²¹ Yahweh visita Anne, et elle conçut et enfanta trois fils et deux filles. Et le jeune Samuel grandissait en la présence de Yahweh. ²² Héli était très vieux, et il apprit comment ses fils agissaient à l'égard de tout Israël, et qu'ils couchaient avec les femmes qui servaient à l'entrée de la tente de réunion. ²³ Il leur dit : « Pourquoi faites-vous de telles choses ? Car j'apprends de tout le peuple vos mauvaises actions. ²⁴ Non, mes enfants, la rumeur que j'entends n'est pas bonne ; on fait pécher le peuple de Yahweh. ²⁵ Si un homme pèche contre un autre homme, Dieu intervient comme arbitre ; mais si c'est contre Yahweh qu'il pèche, qui intercédera pour lui ? » Et ils n'écoutaient point la voix de leur père, car Yahweh voulait les faire mourir. ²⁶ Le jeune Samuel continuait à grandir, et il était agréable à Yahweh et aux hommes. ²⁷ Un homme de Dieu vint auprès d'Héli et lui dit : « Ainsi parle Yahweh : Ne me suis-je pas clairement révélé à la maison de ton père, lorsqu'ils étaient en Égypte dans la maison de Pharaon ? ²⁸ Je l'ai choisi d'entre toutes les tribus d'Israël pour être mon prêtre, pour monter à mon autel, pour faire fumer l'encens, pour porter l'éphod devant moi ; et j'ai donné à la maison de ton père toutes les offrandes des enfants d'Israël faites par le feu. ²⁹ Pourquoi avez-vous foulé aux pieds mes sacrifices et mes oblations, que j'ai ordonné d'offrir dans ma demeure ? Et pourquoi as-tu honoré tes fils plus que moi, en vous engraissant du meilleur de toutes les offrandes d'Israël, mon peuple ? ³⁰ C'est pourquoi, voici la parole de Yahweh, le Dieu d'Israël : J'avais déclaré que ta maison et la maison de ton père marcheraient devant moi à perpétuité. Et maintenant, dit Yahweh, qu'il n'en soit plus ainsi ! Car j'honorerai ceux qui m'honorent, et ceux qui me méprisent seront méprisés. ³¹ Voici que les jours viennent où je retrancherai ton bras et le bras de la maison de ton père, en sorte qu'il n'y aura plus de vieillard dans ta maison. ³² Tu verras ta demeure humiliée, pendant que Dieu comblera de biens Israël ; et il n'y aura plus jamais de vieillard dans ta maison. ³³ Je ne ferai pas disparaître de mon autel tout homme des tiens, afin que tes yeux se consument et que ton âme défaille ; mais tout rejeton de ta maison mourra dans la force de l'âge. ³⁴ Et tu auras pour signe ce qui arrivera à tes deux fils, à Ophni et Phinées : ils mourront tous deux le même jour. ³⁵ Et je me susciterai un prêtre fidèle, qui agira selon mon coeur et selon mon âme, je lui bâtirai une maison stable, et il marchera toujours devant mon oint. ³⁶ Et quiconque restera de ta maison viendra se prosterner devant lui, pour avoir une pièce d'argent et un morceau de pain, et il dira : Mets-moi, je te prie, à quelqu'une des fonctions du sacerdoce, afin que j'aie un morceau de pain à manger. »

1 Samuel 3

¹ Le jeune Samuel servait Yahweh en la présence d'Héli. La parole de Yahweh était rare en ces jours-là, et la vision n'était pas fréquente. ² En ce même temps, comme Héli était couché à sa place, or ses yeux avaient commencé à se troubler et il ne pouvait plus voir ; ³ la lampe de Dieu ne s'était pas encore éteinte, et Samuel était couché dans le temple de Yahweh, où était l'arche de Dieu, ⁴ Yahweh appela Samuel ; il répondit : « Me voici ! » ⁵ Et il courut auprès d'Héli, et lui dit : « Me voici, car tu m'as appelé. » Héli répondit : « Je n'ai point appelé ; retourne te coucher. » Et il alla se coucher. ⁶ Yahweh appela de nouveau Samuel ; et Samuel se leva et, étant allé auprès d'Héli, il dit : « Me voici, car tu m'as appelé. » Héli répondit : « Je n'ai point appelé, mon fils ; retourne te coucher. » ⁷ Samuel ne connaissait pas encore Yahweh, car la parole de Yahweh ne lui avait pas encore été révélée. ⁸ Yahweh appela de nouveau Samuel pour la troisième fois. Il se leva et, étant allé auprès d'Héli, il dit : « Me voici, car tu m'as appelé. » Héli comprit alors que c'était Yahweh qui appelait l'enfant. ⁹ Et Héli dit à Samuel : « Va, couche-toi, et si l'on t'appelle encore, tu diras : Parlez, Yahweh, car votre serviteur écoute. » Et Samuel s'en alla et se coucha à sa place. ¹⁰ Yahweh vint et se tint là, et il appela comme les autres fois : « Samuel ! Samuel ! » Samuel répondit : « Parlez, car votre serviteur écoute. » ¹¹ Et Yahweh dit à Samuel : « Voici que je vais faire dans Israël une chose que personne n'entendra sans que les deux oreilles lui tintent. ¹² En ce jour-là j'accomplirai sur Héli tout ce que j'ai prononcé touchant sa maison ; je commencerai et j'achèverai. ¹³ Je lui ai déclaré que j'allais juger sa maison pour jamais, à cause du crime dont il avait connaissance, et par lequel ses fils se sont rendus indignes sans qu'il les ait réprimés. ¹⁴ C'est pourquoi j'ai juré à la maison d'Héli que jamais le crime de la maison d'Héli ne sera expié, ni par des sacrifices ni par des oblations. » ¹⁵ Samuel resta couché jusqu'au matin, puis il ouvrit les portes de la maison de Yahweh. Et Samuel craignait de raconter la vision à Héli. ¹⁶ Mais Héli appela Samuel, en disant : « Samuel, mon fils ! » Il répondit : « Me voici. » ¹⁷ Et Héli dit : « Quelle est la parole que Yahweh t'a dite ? Je te prie, ne me cache rien. Que Yahweh te traite dans toute sa rigueur si tu me caches quelque chose de toute la parole qu'il t'a dite ! » ¹⁸ Samuel lui raconta toutes les paroles sans lui rien cacher. Et Héli dit : « C'est Yahweh ; ce qui lui semblera bon, qu'il le fasse ! » ¹⁹ Samuel devint grand ; Yahweh était avec lui, et il ne laissa tomber à terre aucune de ses paroles. ²⁰ Tout Israël, depuis Dan jusqu'à Bersabée, reconnut que Samuel était un vrai prophète de Yahweh. ²¹ Et Yahweh continuait d'apparaître à Silo, car Yahweh se manifestait à Samuel, à Silo, par la parole de Yahweh.

   ¹ Now there was a certain man of Ramathaimzophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite: ² And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. ³ And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there. ⁴ And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions: ⁵ But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁶ And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁷ And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat. ⁸ Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
   ⁹ So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD. ¹⁰ And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore. ¹¹ And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head. ¹² And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth. ¹³ Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken. ¹⁴ And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee. ¹⁵ And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD. ¹⁶ Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto. ¹⁷ Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him. ¹⁸ And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.
   ¹⁹ And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her. ²⁰ Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD. ²¹ And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow. ²² But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever. ²³ And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him. ²⁴ And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young. ²⁵ And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli. ²⁶ And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD. ²⁷ For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him: ²⁸ Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.

   ¹ And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation. ² There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God. ³ Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. ⁴ The bows of the mighty men are broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength. ⁵ They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble. ⁶ The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. ⁷ The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up. ⁸ He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he hath set the world upon them. ⁹ He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail. ¹⁰ The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.
   ¹¹ And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto the LORD before Eli the priest. ¹² Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD. ¹³ And the priest's custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant came, while the flesh was in seething, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand; ¹⁴ And he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither. ¹⁵ Also before they burnt the fat, the priest's servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw. ¹⁶ And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force. ¹⁷ Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD: for men abhorred the offering of the LORD. ¹⁸ But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, girded with a linen ephod. ¹⁹ Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. ²⁰ And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The LORD give thee seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to the LORD. And they went unto their own home. ²¹ And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD. ²² Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. ²³ And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people. ²⁴ Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the LORD's people to transgress. ²⁵ If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them. ²⁶ And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the LORD, and also with men.
   ²⁷ And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh's house? ²⁸ And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel? ²⁹ Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people? ³⁰ Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. ³¹ Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father's house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house. ³² And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever. ³³ And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age. ³⁴ And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them. ³⁵ And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever. ³⁶ And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.

   ¹ And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision. ² And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; ³ And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; ⁴ That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I. ⁵ And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. ⁶ And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. ⁷ Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. ⁸ And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. ⁹ Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. ¹⁰ And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
   ¹¹ And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. ¹² In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end. ¹³ For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. ¹⁴ And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever. ¹⁵ And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision. ¹⁶ Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I. ¹⁷ And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee. ¹⁸ And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.
   ¹⁹ And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. ²⁰ And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD. ²¹ And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
