2S 11-12 (Catholique Crampon)

¹ Au retour de l'année, au temps où les rois se mettent en campagne, David envoya Joab avec ses serviteurs et tout Israël, et ils ravagèrent le pays des fils d'Ammon et assiégèrent Rabba. Mais David resta à Jérusalem. ² Un soir que David s'était levé de sa couche et se promenait sur le toit de la maison du roi, il aperçut de dessus le toit une femme qui se baignait, et cette femme était très belle d'aspect. ³ David fit rechercher qui était cette femme, et on lui dit : "C'est Bethsabée, fille d'Éliam, femme d'Urie le Héthéen." ⁴ Et David envoya des gens pour la prendre ; elle vint chez lui et il coucha avec elle. Puis elle se purifia de sa souillure et retourna dans sa maison. ⁵ Cette femme fut enceinte, et elle le fit annoncer à David, en disant : "Je suis enceinte." ⁶ Alors David expédia cet ordre à Joab : "Envoie-moi Urie, le Héthéen." Et Joab envoya Urie à David. ⁷ Urie s'étant rendu auprès de David, celui-ci demanda des nouvelles de Joab, de l'armée et du combat. ⁸ Puis David dit à Urie : "Descend dans ta maison et lave tes pieds." Urie sortit de la maison du roi, et on porta après lui un don de la table du roi ; ⁹ mais Urie se coucha devant la porte de la maison du roi avec tous les serviteurs de son maître, et il ne descendit pas dans sa maison. ¹⁰ On en informa David, en disant : "Urie n'est pas descendu dans sa maison." Et David dit à Urie : "N'arrives-tu pas de voyage ? Pourquoi n'es-tu pas descendu dans ta maison ?" ¹¹ Urie répondit à David : "L'arche, et Israël, et Juda habitent sous des tentes, mon seigneur Joab et les serviteurs de mon seigneur campent en rase campagne, et moi j'entrerai dans ma maison pour manger et boire, et pour coucher avec ma femme ! Par ta vie et par la vie de ton âme, je n'en ferai rien." ¹² David dit à Urie : "Reste ici encore aujourd'hui, et demain je te renverrai." Et Urie resta donc à Jérusalem ce jour-là et le suivant. ¹³ David l'invita à manger et à boire en sa présence, et il l'enivra ; et le soir, Urie sortit pour s'étendre sur sa couche auprès des serviteurs de son maître, mais il ne descendit pas dans sa maison. ¹⁴ Le lendemain matin, David écrivit une lettre à Joab et l'envoya par la main d'Urie. ¹⁵ Il écrivait dans cette lettre : "Placez Urie au plus fort du combat, et retirez-vous de derrière lui, afin qu'il soit frappé et qu'il meure." ¹⁶ Joab, qui faisait le siège de la ville, plaça Urie à l'endroit où il savait que se trouvaient les hommes les plus vaillants. ¹⁷ Les hommes de la ville, ayant fait une sortie pour attaquer Joab, plusieurs tombèrent d'entre le peuple, d'entre les serviteurs de David ; Urie le Héthéen mourut aussi. ¹⁸ Joab envoya un messager pour informer David de tous les faits du combat ; ¹⁹ il donna cet ordre au messager : "Quand tu auras achevé de raconter au roi tous les faits du combat, si la colère du roi se soulève et qu'il te dise : ²⁰ Pourquoi vous êtes-vous approchés de la ville pour livrer combat ? Ne saviez-vous pas que les assiégés lanceraient des traits du haut de la muraille ? ²¹ Qui a frappé Abimélech, fils de Jérobaal ? N'est-ce pas une femme qui a lancé sur lui du haut de la muraille un morceau de meule, ce dont il est mort à Thébès ? Pourquoi donc vous êtes-vous approchés de la muraille ?‒ Alors tu diras : Ton serviteur Urie le Héthéen est mort aussi." ²² Le messager partit et, à son arrivée, il raconta à David tout ce que Joab lui avait ordonné. ²³ Le messager dit à David : "Ces gens, plus forts que nous, ont fait une sortie contre nous dans la campagne, mais nous les avons repoussés jusqu'à la porte. ²⁴ Alors leurs archers ont tiré du haut de la muraille sur tes serviteurs, et plusieurs des serviteurs du roi sont morts tués, et ton serviteur Urie le Héthéen est mort aussi." ²⁵ David dit au messager : "Voici ce que tu diras à Joab : Ne sois pas trop en peine de cette affaire, car l'épée dévore tantôt l'un, tantôt l'autre. Redouble de vigueur contre la ville et renverse-la. Et toi, encourage-le." ²⁶ La femme d'Urie apprit que son mari, Urie, était mort, et elle pleura sur son mari. ²⁷ Quand le deuil fut passé, David l'envoya chercher et la recueillit dans sa maison. Elle devint sa femme et lui enfanta un fils. Et l'action que David avait faite déplut aux yeux de Yahweh.

2 Samuel 12

¹ Yahweh envoya Nathan vers David ; et Nathan vint à lui et lui dit : "Il y avait dans une ville deux hommes, l'un riche et l'autre pauvre. ² Le riche avait des brebis et des boeufs en très grand nombre, ³ et le pauvre n'avait rien, si ce n'est une petite brebis qu'il avait achetée ; il l'élevait et elle grandissait chez lui avec ses enfants, mangeant de son pain, buvant de sa coupe et dormant sur son sein, et elle était pour lui comme une fille. ⁴ Une visite arriva chez l'homme riche ; et le riche s'abstint de prendre de ses brebis ou de ses boeufs, pour préparer un repas au voyageur qui était venu chez lui ; il prit la brebis du pauvre et l'apprêta pour l'homme qui était venu chez lui." ⁵ La colère de David s'enflamma violemment contre cet homme, et il à Nathan : "Aussi vrai que Yahweh est vivant ! L'homme qui a fait cela mérite la mort ; ⁶ et il rendra quatre fois la brebis, pour avoir fait une pareille chose et pour avoir été sans pitié." ⁷ Et Nathan dit à David : "Tu es cet homme-là ! Ainsi parle Yahweh, le Dieu d'Israël : Je t'ai oint pour roi sur Israël, et je t'ai délivré de la main de Saül ; ⁸ je t'ai donné la maison de ton maître, et j'ai mis sur ton sein les femmes de ton maître ; et je t'ai donné la maison d'Israël et de Juda, et, si cela était trop peu, j'y aurais encore ajouté ceci ou cela. ⁹ Pourquoi as-tu méprisé la parole de Yahweh, en faisant ce qui est mal à ses yeux ? Tu as frappé par l'épée Urie le Héthéen ; tu as pris sa femme pour en faire ta femme, et tu l'as tué par l'épée des fils d'Ammon. ¹⁰ Et maintenant, l'épée ne s'éloignera jamais de ta maison, parce que tu m'as méprisé et que tu as pris la femme d'Urie le Héthéen, pour en faire ta femme. ¹¹ Ainsi parle Yahweh : Voici que je vais faire lever, de ta maison même, le malheur sur toi, et je prendrai sous tes yeux tes femmes pour les donner à ton voisin, et il couchera avec tes femmes à la vue de ce soleil. ¹² Car toi, tu as agi en secret ; et moi, je ferai cela en présence de tout Israël et à la face du soleil." ¹³ David dit à Nathan : "J'ai péché contre Yahweh." Et Nathan dit à David : "Yahweh a pardonné ton péché, tu ne mourras point. ¹⁴ Mais, parce que tu as fait, par cette action, mépriser Yahweh par ses ennemis, le fils qui t'est né mourra." ¹⁵ Et Nathan s'en alla dans sa maison. Yahweh frappa l'enfant que la femme d'Urie avait enfanté à David, et il devint gravement malade. ¹⁶ David pria Dieu pour l'enfant, et jeûna ; et, étant entré dans sa chambre, il passa la nuit couché par terre. ¹⁷ Les anciens de sa maison insistèrent auprès de lui pour le faire lever de terre ; mais il ne voulut point et ne mangea pas avec eux. ¹⁸ Le septième jour, l'enfant mourut. Les serviteurs de David craignaient de lui annoncer que l'enfant était mort, car ils disaient : "Lorsque l'enfant vivait encore, nous lui avons parlé, et il n'a pas écouté notre voix ; comment lui dirons-nous : L'enfant est mort ? Il fera pis encore." ¹⁹ David s'aperçut que ses serviteurs parlaient tout bas entre eux, et David comprit que l'enfant était mort. David dit à ses serviteurs : "L'enfant est donc mort ?" Ils dirent : "Il est mort." ²⁰ Alors David, s'étant levé de terre, se baigna, s'oignit et changea de vêtements ; puis il alla dans la maison de Yahweh et se prosterna. Revenu chez lui, il demanda qu'on lui servît à manger, et il mangea. ²¹ Ses serviteurs lui dirent : "Qu'est-ce que tu fais là ? Lorsque l'enfant vivait, tu jeûnais et tu pleurais, et maintenant que l'enfant est mort, tu te lèves et tu manges du pain !" ²² Il dit : "Quand l'enfant vivait encore, je jeûnais et je pleurais, car je disais : Qui sait ? Yahweh aura peut-être pitié de moi, et l'enfant vivra ? ²³ Maintenant qu'il est mort, pourquoi jeûnerais-je ? Puis-je encore le faire revenir ? J'irai vers lui ; mais il ne reviendra pas vers moi." ²⁴ David consola Bethsabée, sa femme ; il s'approcha d'elle et coucha avec elle, et elle enfanta un fils, qu'il appela Salomon ; et Yahweh l'aima, ²⁵ et il envoya dire par l'intermédiaire de Nathan, le prophète, qui lui donna le nom de Jedidiah, à cause de Yahweh. ²⁶ Joab, qui assiégeait Rabba des fils d'Ammon, s'empara de la ville royale ; ²⁷ et Joab envoya des messagers à David pour lui dire : "J'ai assiégé Rabba et je me suis déjà emparé de la ville des eaux. ²⁸ Maintenant, rassemble le reste du peuple, viens camper contre la ville et prends-la, de peur que je ne prenne moi-même la ville, et qu'on ne l'appelle de mon nom." ²⁹ David rassembla tout le peuple et, ayant marché sur Rabba, il l'attaqua, et s'en rendit maître. ³⁰ Il enleva la couronne de leur roi de dessus sa tête : son poids était d'un talent d'or ; et il y avait sur elle une pierre précieuse, et elle fut mise sur la tête de David. Et il emporta de la ville un très grand butin. ³¹ Quant au peuple qui s'y trouvait, il l'en fit sortir et le mit aux scies, aux pics de fer et aux haches de fer, et il les fit passer au moule à briques ; il traita de même toutes les villes des fils d'Ammon. Puis David retourna à Jérusalem avec tout le peuple.

2S 11-12 (King James)

   ¹ And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem. ² And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. ³ And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? ⁴ And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. ⁵ And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
   ⁶ And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. ⁷ And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered. ⁸ And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of meat from the king. ⁹ But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house. ¹⁰ And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not go down unto thine house? ¹¹ And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing. ¹² And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow. ¹³ And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
   ¹⁴ And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die. ¹⁶ And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were. ¹⁷ And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also. ¹⁸ Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war; ¹⁹ And charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling the matters of the war unto the king, ²⁰ And if so be that the king's wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall? ²¹ Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why went ye nigh the wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also. ²² So the messenger went, and came and shewed David all that Joab had sent him for. ²³ And the messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate. ²⁴ And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king's servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also. ²⁵ Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him. ²⁶ And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband. ²⁷ And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.

2 Samuel 12

   ¹ And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. ² The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds: ³ But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. ⁴ And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him. ⁵ And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die: ⁶ And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. ⁷ And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; ⁸ And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things. ⁹ Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. ¹⁰ Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. ¹¹ Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. ¹² For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun. ¹³ And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die. ¹⁴ Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.
   ¹⁵ And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very sick. ¹⁶ David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. ¹⁷ And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them. ¹⁸ And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead? ¹⁹ But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead. ²⁰ Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat. ²¹ Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread. ²² And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live? ²³ But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me. ²⁴ And David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved him. ²⁵ And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD.
   ²⁶ And Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city. ²⁷ And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah, and have taken the city of waters. ²⁸ Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it be called after my name. ²⁹ And David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it. ³⁰ And he took their king's crown from off his head, the weight whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance. ³¹ And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick-kiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.
