   ¹ These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king. ² Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of Ithamar; Daniel: of the sons of David; Hattush. ³ Of the sons of Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh; Zechariah: and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males an hundred and fifty. ⁴ Of the sons of Pahathmoab; Elihoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males. ⁵ Of the sons of Shechaniah; the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males. ⁶ Of the sons also of Adin; Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males. ⁷ And of the sons of Elam; Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy males. ⁸ And of the sons of Shephatiah; Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him fourscore males. ⁹ Of the sons of Joab; Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen males. ¹⁰ And of the sons of Shelomith; the son of Josiphiah, and with him an hundred and threescore males. ¹¹ And of the sons of Bebai; Zechariah the son of Bebai, and with him twenty and eight males. ¹² And of the sons of Azgad; Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him an hundred and ten males. ¹³ And of the last sons of Adonikam, whose names are these, Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them threescore males. ¹⁴ Of the sons also of Bigvai; Uthai, and Zabbud, and with them seventy males. ¹⁵ And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava; and there abode we in tents three days: and I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi. ¹⁶ Then sent I for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, and for Elnathan, and for Jarib, and for Elnathan, and for Nathan, and for Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib, and for Elnathan, men of understanding. ¹⁷ And I sent them with commandment unto Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia, and I told them what they should say unto Iddo, and to his brethren the Nethinims, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring unto us ministers for the house of our God. ¹⁸ And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen; ¹⁹ And Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brethren and their sons, twenty; ²⁰ Also of the Nethinims, whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinims: all of them were expressed by name.
   ²¹ Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. ²² For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him. ²³ So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.
   ²⁴ Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them, ²⁵ And weighed unto them the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, even the offering of the house of our God, which the king, and his counsellors, and his lords, and all Israel there present, had offered: ²⁶ I even weighed unto their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels an hundred talents, and of gold an hundred talents; ²⁷ Also twenty basons of gold, of a thousand drams; and two vessels of fine copper, precious as gold. ²⁸ And I said unto them, Ye are holy unto the LORD; the vessels are holy also; and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering unto the LORD God of your fathers. ²⁹ Watch ye, and keep them, until ye weigh them before the chief of the priests and the Levites, and chief of the fathers of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD. ³⁰ So took the priests and the Levites the weight of the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem unto the house of our God.
   ³¹ Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way. ³² And we came to Jerusalem, and abode there three days. ³³ Now on the fourth day was the silver and the gold and the vessels weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites; ³⁴ By number and by weight of every one: and all the weight was written at that time. ³⁵ Also the children of those that had been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel, ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the LORD. ³⁶ And they delivered the king's commissions unto the king's lieutenants, and to the governors on this side the river: and they furthered the people, and the house of God.

   ¹ Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. ² For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass. ³ And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied. ⁴ Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the transgression of those that had been carried away; and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice.
   ⁵ And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto the LORD my God, ⁶ And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens. ⁷ Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day. ⁸ And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage. ⁹ For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem. ¹⁰ And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments, ¹¹ Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness. ¹² Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever. ¹³ And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this; ¹⁴ Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping? ¹⁵ O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.

   ¹ Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore. ² And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing. ³ Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law. ⁴ Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it. ⁵ Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this word. And they sware.
   ⁶ Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away. ⁷ And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem; ⁸ And that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away. ⁹ Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain. ¹⁰ And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel. ¹¹ Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives. ¹² Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do. ¹³ But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed in this thing. ¹⁴ Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.
   ¹⁵ Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah were employed about this matter: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them. ¹⁶ And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. ¹⁷ And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first month. ¹⁸ And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken strange wives: namely, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren; Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah. ¹⁹ And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass. ²⁰ And of the sons of Immer; Hanani, and Zebadiah. ²¹ And of the sons of Harim; Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah. ²² And of the sons of Pashur; Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah. ²³ Also of the Levites; Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah, (the same is Kelita,) Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer. ²⁴ Of the singers also; Eliashib: and of the porters; Shallum, and Telem, and Uri. ²⁵ Moreover of Israel: of the sons of Parosh; Ramiah, and Jeziah, and Malchiah, and Miamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah. ²⁶ And of the sons of Elam; Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Eliah. ²⁷ And of the sons of Zattu; Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza. ²⁸ Of the sons also of Bebai; Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai. ²⁹ And of the sons of Bani; Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, and Ramoth. ³⁰ And of the sons of Pahathmoab; Adna, and Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezaleel, and Binnui, and Manasseh. ³¹ And of the sons of Harim; Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchiah, Shemaiah, Shimeon, ³² Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah. ³³ Of the sons of Hashum; Mattenai, Mattathah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei. ³⁴ Of the sons of Bani; Maadai, Amram, and Uel, ³⁵ Benaiah, Bedeiah, Chelluh, ³⁶ Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib, ³⁷ Mattaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasau, ³⁸ And Bani, and Binnui, Shimei, ³⁹ And Shelemiah, and Nathan, and Adaiah, ⁴⁰ Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai, ⁴¹ Azareel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah, ⁴² Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph. ⁴³ Of the sons of Nebo; Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jadau, and Joel, Benaiah. ⁴⁴ All these had taken strange wives: and some of them had wives by whom they had children.

¹⁵ Je les ai rassemblés près du fleuve qui coule vers Ahava et nous avons campé là durant trois jours. J'ai passé en revue le peuple et les prêtres, sans y trouver un seul Lévite. ¹⁶ Alors j'ai fait appeler les chefs Eliézer, Ariel, Shemaeja, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zacharie et Meshullam, ainsi que les hommes intelligents qu'étaient Jojarib et Elnathan. ¹⁷ Je les ai envoyés vers Iddo, le chef de la localité de Casiphia, et leur ai indiqué avec précision ce qu'ils devaient dire à Iddo et à ses frères, les serviteurs du temple, qui se trouvaient à Casiphia, afin qu'ils nous amènent des assistants pour la maison de notre Dieu. ¹⁸ Comme la bonne main de notre Dieu reposait sur nous, ils nous ont envoyé un homme plein de bon sens, qui était un descendant de Machli, lui-même descendant de Lévi, le fils d'Israël, à savoir Shérébia, et avec lui ses fils et ses frères, au nombre de 18. ¹⁹ Ils ont envoyé aussi Hashabia et avec lui Esaïe, un descendant de Merari, ses frères et leurs fils, au nombre de 20, ²⁰ ainsi que, parmi les serviteurs du temple que David et les chefs avaient établis au service des Lévites, 220 hommes, tous nommément désignés.
²¹ Là, près du fleuve d'Ahava, j'ai proclamé un jeûne d'humiliation devant notre Dieu, afin de le prier de nous accorder un heureux voyage, à nous, à nos enfants et à tout ce qui nous appartenait. ²² J'aurais eu honte de demander au roi une escorte et des cavaliers pour nous protéger contre l'ennemi pendant la route, car nous lui avions affirmé: «La main de notre Dieu repose sur tous ceux qui le recherchent afin de leur faire du bien, tandis que sa force et sa colère frappent tous ceux qui l'abandonnent.» ²³ C'est pour cela que nous avons jeûné et recherché notre Dieu, et il a accueilli favorablement notre prière.
²⁴ J'ai pris à part douze chefs des prêtres – Shérébia, Hashabia et dix de leurs frères – ²⁵ et j'ai pesé devant eux l'argent, l'or et les ustensiles offerts à titre de contribution pour la maison de notre Dieu par le roi, ses conseillers et ses chefs, ainsi que par tous les Israélites qu'on avait trouvés. ²⁶ Je leur ai ainsi confié près de 20 tonnes d'argent, des ustensiles en argent pour un poids de 3 tonnes, 3 tonnes d'or, ²⁷ 20 coupes en or pour une valeur de 1000 pièces et deux vases d'un beau bronze poli aussi précieux que l'or. ²⁸ Puis je leur ai dit: «Vous êtes consacrés à l'Eternel, tout comme ces ustensiles, et cet argent et cet or sont une offrande volontaire à l'Eternel, le Dieu de vos ancêtres. ²⁹ Restez vigilants et attentifs jusqu'à ce que vous puissiez les peser devant les chefs des prêtres, les Lévites et les chefs de famille d'Israël, à Jérusalem, dans les chambres de la maison de l'Eternel.» ³⁰ Les prêtres et les Lévites ont accepté de se charger de cette masse d'argent, d'or et d'ustensiles pour l'amener à Jérusalem, dans la maison de notre Dieu.
³¹ Le douzième jour du premier mois, nous avons quitté le fleuve d'Ahava pour Jérusalem. La main de notre Dieu reposait sur nous et elle nous a délivrés de toute attaque et de toute embuscade pendant la route. ³² A notre arrivée à Jérusalem, nous nous sommes reposés pendant trois jours. ³³ Le quatrième jour, nous avons pesé dans la maison de notre Dieu l'argent, l'or et les ustensiles et nous les avons confiés au prêtre Merémoth, fils d'Urie; il y avait avec lui Eléazar, fils de Phinées. Avec eux se trouvaient aussi les Lévites Jozabad, fils de Josué, et Noadia, fils de Binnuï. ³⁴ On a vérifié le nombre et le poids de tous les éléments et l'on a mis par écrit, à ce moment-là, le poids de l'ensemble.
³⁵ A leur retour de déportation, les Juifs issus de l'exil ont offert en holocauste au Dieu d'Israël 12 taureaux pour tout Israël, 96 béliers, 77 agneaux, ainsi que 12 boucs comme victimes expiatoires. L'ensemble a constitué un holocauste en l'honneur de l'Eternel. ³⁶ Ils ont transmis les ordres du roi à ses satrapes et aux gouverneurs de la région située à l'ouest de l'Euphrate, et ceux-ci ont apporté leur soutien au peuple et à la maison de Dieu.

Consternation et prière d'Esdras

¹ Cela fait, les chefs se sont approchés de moi en disant: «Le peuple d'Israël, les prêtres et les Lévites ne se sont pas séparés des populations installées dans la région; ils imitent leurs pratiques abominables, oui, celles des Cananéens, des Hittites, des Phéréziens, des Jébusiens, des Ammonites, des Moabites, des Egyptiens et des Amoréens. ² En effet, ils ont pris certaines de leurs filles comme femmes pour eux et pour leurs fils, ils ont mêlé la sainte lignée aux populations installées dans la région. Les chefs et les magistrats ont été les premiers à commettre cet acte d'infidélité.»
³ A cette nouvelle, j'ai déchiré mes vêtements et mon manteau, je me suis arraché les cheveux et la barbe et je me suis assis, accablé. ⁴ A mes côtés se sont rassemblés tous ceux qui tremblaient devant les paroles prononcées par le Dieu d'Israël contre l'infidélité des exilés. Pour ma part, je suis resté assis, accablé, jusqu'à l'offrande du soir. ⁵ Puis, au moment de l'offrande du soir, j'ai abandonné mon attitude d'humiliation, tout en gardant mes vêtements et mon manteau déchirés, suis tombé à genoux, ai tendu les mains vers l'Eternel, mon Dieu, ⁶ et j'ai dit:
«Mon Dieu, je suis dans la confusion. J'ai honte, mon Dieu, de lever le visage vers toi, car nos fautes sont nombreuses au point de nous submerger et notre culpabilité est si grande qu'elle atteint le ciel. ⁷ Depuis l'époque de nos ancêtres et jusqu'à aujourd'hui, nous avons été grandement coupables, et c'est à cause de nos fautes que nous avons été livrés, nous, nos rois et nos prêtres, à la domination des rois étrangers, à l'épée, à la déportation, au pillage, à une honte pareille à celle qui couvre aujourd'hui notre visage.
⁸ »Pourtant, l'Eternel, notre Dieu, vient de nous faire grâce en nous laissant quelques rescapés et en nous permettant de nous installer dans son saint lieu, en rendant la clarté à notre regard et en nous redonnant un peu de vie au milieu de notre esclavage. ⁹ Oui, nous sommes des esclaves, mais notre Dieu ne nous a pas abandonnés dans notre esclavage: il a manifesté sa bonté en nous attirant la faveur des rois de Perse, en nous redonnant la vie afin que nous puissions reconstruire son temple et réparer ses ruines, et en nous fournissant un abri sûr en Juda et à Jérusalem.
¹⁰ »Et maintenant, notre Dieu, que pouvons-nous dire après cela? En effet, nous avons abandonné tes commandements, ¹¹ ceux que tu nous avais prescrits par l'intermédiaire de tes serviteurs les prophètes. Tu avais dit: ‘Le pays dans lequel vous entrez pour en prendre possession est un pays souillé par les impuretés des populations installées dans la région, par les pratiques abominables dont elles l'ont rempli, d'un bout à l'autre, avec leur impureté. ¹² Ne donnez donc pas vos filles en mariage à leurs fils et ne prenez pas leurs filles comme femmes pour vos fils. Ne recherchez jamais leur prospérité ni leur bien-être. Ainsi, vous deviendrez forts, vous mangerez les meilleurs produits du pays et vous le laisserez en héritage perpétuel à vos fils.'
¹³ »Après tout ce qui nous est arrivé à cause de nos mauvaises actions et de notre grande culpabilité, et même si toi, notre Dieu, tu ne nous as pas punis avec toute la sévérité que méritaient nos fautes et nous as accordé ces rescapés, ¹⁴ allons-nous recommencer à violer tes commandements et à nous allier par mariage avec des peuples capables de pratiques aussi abominables? Ne t'irriterais-tu pas contre nous au point de nous exterminer, sans laisser ni reste ni rescapés? ¹⁵ Eternel, Dieu d'Israël, tu es juste, car nous ne sommes plus, aujourd'hui, qu'un reste de rescapés. Nous voici devant toi avec notre culpabilité, alors que nous ne devrions pas pouvoir nous tenir ainsi devant toi.»

Renvoi des femmes étrangères

¹ Pendant qu'Esdras faisait cette prière et cette confession, en pleurs, prosterné devant la maison de Dieu, une assemblée très nombreuse d'Israélites, hommes, femmes et enfants, s'était formée à ses côtés. En effet, le peuple pleurait abondamment.
² Alors Shecania, fils de Jehiel, qui était un descendant d'Elam, prit la parole. Il dit à Esdras: «Nous avons commis un acte d'infidélité envers notre Dieu, nous avons installé chez nous des femmes étrangères, issues des peuples qui habitent le pays. Pourtant, en dépit de cela, il y a un espoir pour Israël. ³ Concluons maintenant une alliance avec notre Dieu en renvoyant toutes ces femmes et leurs enfants, suivant l'avis formulé par toi, seigneur, et par ceux qui tremblent devant les commandements de notre Dieu, et que l'on se conforme à la loi! ⁴ Lève-toi, car cette affaire est de ton ressort. Quant à nous, nous sommes avec toi. Fortifie-toi et agis!»

Il fit jurer aux chefs des prêtres et des Lévites et à tout Israël qu'ils feraient ce qui venait d'être dit, et ils s'y engagèrent par serment. ⁶ Puis Esdras quitta le devant de la maison de Dieu et se rendit dans la chambre de Jochanan, fils d'Eliashib. Il resta là sans manger ni boire, parce qu'il était en deuil à cause de l'infidélité des exilés.
⁷ On fit passer dans Juda et à Jérusalem un message à l'intention de tous les Juifs issus de l'exil: ils devaient se réunir à Jérusalem; ⁸ tout homme qui ne s'y serait pas rendu dans un délai de trois jours se verrait, conformément à l'avis des chefs et des anciens, confisquer tous ses biens et serait lui-même exclu de l'assemblée des exilés.
⁹ Tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin se rassemblèrent donc à Jérusalem dans les trois jours. C'était le vingtième jour du neuvième mois. Tout le peuple s'installa sur la place de la maison de Dieu, tremblant à la fois à cause de la situation et en raison de la pluie. ¹⁰ Le prêtre Esdras se leva et leur dit: «Vous avez commis un acte d'infidélité, vous avez installé chez vous des femmes étrangères, augmentant ainsi la culpabilité d'Israël. ¹¹ Confessez maintenant votre faute à l'Eternel, le Dieu de vos ancêtres, et faites ce qui lui plaît! Séparez-vous des populations du pays et des femmes étrangères!»
¹² Toute l'assemblée répondit à voix haute: «Nous nous considérons comme tenus de faire ce que tu as dit, ¹³ mais le peuple est nombreux, le temps est à la pluie et nous n'avons pas la force de rester dehors. D'ailleurs, ce n'est pas quelque chose qui peut se faire en un jour ou deux seulement, car il y en a beaucoup parmi nous qui se sont rendus coupables de cet acte de révolte. ¹⁴ Que nos chefs restent donc à la place de toute l'assemblée; tous ceux qui, dans chacune de nos villes, ont installé chez eux des femmes étrangères viendront à des moments fixés, accompagnés des anciens et des juges de leur ville, jusqu'à ce que l'ardente colère provoquée chez notre Dieu par cette affaire se soit détournée de nous.»
¹⁵ Jonathan, fils d'Asaël, et Jachzia, fils de Thikva, furent les seuls à s'opposer à cette proposition, avec l'appui de Meshullam et du Lévite Shabthaï. ¹⁶ Quant aux Juifs issus de l'exil, ils s'y conformèrent. On choisit le prêtre Esdras et des chefs de famille en les désignant tous nommément, et ils siégèrent le premier jour du dixième mois pour s'occuper de l'affaire. ¹⁷ Le premier jour du premier mois, ils avaient fini de traiter le cas de tous les hommes qui avaient installé chez eux des femmes étrangères.
¹⁸ Dans les familles des prêtres, on en trouva plusieurs qui avaient installé chez eux des femmes étrangères. Parmi les descendants de Josué, fils de Jotsadak, et ses frères, il y avait Maaséja, Eliézer, Jarib et Guedalia. ¹⁹ Ils s'engagèrent à renvoyer leurs femmes et à offrir un bélier en sacrifice de culpabilité. ²⁰ Parmi les descendants d'Immer, il y avait Hanani et Zebadia; ²¹ parmi les descendants de Harim, Maaséja, Elie, Shemaeja, Jehiel et Ozias; ²² parmi les descendants de Pashhur, Eljoénaï, Maaséja, Ismaël, Nathanaël, Jozabad et Eleasa. ²³ Parmi les Lévites, il y avait Jozabad, Shimeï, Kélaja – c'est-à-dire Kelitha – Pethachja, Juda et Eliézer; ²⁴ parmi les musiciens: Eliashib; parmi les portiers: Shallum, Thélem et Uri.
²⁵ Dans le peuple d'Israël, il y avait, parmi les descendants de Pareosh, Ramia, Jizzija, Malkija, Mijamin, Eléazar, Malkija et Benaja; ²⁶ parmi les descendants d'Elam, Matthania, Zacharie, Jehiel, Abdi, Jerémoth et Elie; ²⁷ parmi les descendants de Zatthu, Eljoénaï, Eliashib, Matthania, Jerémoth, Zabad et Aziza; ²⁸ parmi les descendants de Bébaï, Jochanan, Hanania, Zabbaï et Athlaï; ²⁹ parmi les descendants de Bani, Meshullam, Malluc, Adaja, Jashub, Sheal et Ramoth; ³⁰ parmi les descendants de Pachath-Moab, Adna, Kelal, Benaja, Maaséja, Matthania, Betsaleel, Binnuï et Manassé; ³¹ parmi les descendants de Harim, Eliézer, Jishija, Malkija, Shemaeja, Siméon, ³² Benjamin, Malluc et Shemaria; ³³ parmi les descendants de Hashum, Matthnaï, Matthattha, Zabad, Eliphéleth, Jerémaï, Manassé et Shimeï; ³⁴ parmi les descendants de Bani, Maadaï, Amram, Uel, ³⁵ Benaja, Bédia, Keluhu, ³⁶ Vania, Merémoth, Eliashib, ³⁷ Matthania, Matthnaï, Jaasaï, ³⁸ Bani, Binnuï, Shimeï, ³⁹ Shélémia, Nathan, Adaja, ⁴⁰ Macnadbaï, Shashaï, Sharaï, ⁴¹ Azareel, Shélémia, Shemaria, ⁴² Shallum, Amaria et Joseph; ⁴³ parmi les descendants de Nebo, Jeïel, Matthithia, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddaï, Joël et Benaja.
⁴⁴ Tous ces hommes avaient pris des femmes étrangères, et certains avaient eu des enfants d'elles.
