BAN ¹ Et la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Jonas une seconde fois en ces termes :

KJV ¹ And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,

BAN ² Lève-toi, va à Ninive, la grande ville, et prêche-lui ce que je te dirai.

KJV ² Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.

BAN ³ Et Jonas se leva et alla à Ninive, selon la parole de l'Eternel. Or, Ninive était une ville grande devant Dieu, de trois journées de chemin.

KJV ³ So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.

BAN ⁴ Et Jonas commença par s'avancer dans la ville le chemin d'une journée, et il prêcha et dit : Encore quarante jours et Ninive sera détruite !

KJV ⁴ And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

BAN ⁵ Et les gens de Ninive crurent Dieu, et ils publièrent un jeûne et ils se revêtirent de sacs depuis le plus grand jusqu'au plus petit.

KJV ⁵ So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.

BAN ⁶ Et la chose parvint au roi de Ninive, et il se leva de son trône, ôta son manteau royal, se couvrit d'un sac et s'assit sur la cendre.

KJV ⁶ For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

BAN ⁷ Et il fit publier par crieurs dans Ninive : Par décret du roi et de ses grands : Que ni gens, ni bêtes, boeufs et brebis, ne mangent rien, ne paissent point et ne boivent point d'eau,

KJV ⁷ And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:

BAN ⁸ et qu'ils se couvrent de sacs, gens et bêtes, et crient à Dieu de toutes, leurs forces et qu'ils se détournent chacun de sa mauvaise voie et des actes de violence qu'ils commettent.

KJV ⁸ But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

BAN ⁹ Qui sait si Dieu ne se repentira pas et ne reviendra pas de l'ardeur de sa colère, en sorte que nous ne périssions point ?

KJV ⁹ Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

BAN ¹⁰ Et Dieu vit ce qu'ils faisaient, comment ils se détournaient de leur mauvaise voie, et Dieu se repentit du mal qu'il avait dit qu'il leur ferait et ne le fit pas.

KJV ¹⁰ And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

BAN ¹ Et Jonas en éprouva un vif chagrin et se fâcha.

KJV ¹ But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

BAN ² Et il fit une prière à l'Eternel et dit : Eternel, n'était-ce donc pas là ce que je disais, lorsque j'étais dans mon pays ? C'est pourquoi je me suis hâté de fuir à Tharsis ; car je savais que tu es un Dieu miséricordieux et clément, lent à la colère, abondant en grâce et qui te repens du mal.

KJV ² And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

BAN ³ Et maintenant, Eternel, retire, je te prie, mon âme ; car la mort me vaut mieux que la vie.

KJV ³ Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

BAN ⁴ Et l'Eternel répondit : Fais-tu bien de te fâcher ?

KJV ⁴ Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry?

BAN ⁵ Jonas était sorti de la ville et s'était assis à l'orient de la ville, et il s'était fait là une hutte de branches et s'y tenait à l'ombre jusqu'à ce qu'il vit ce qui arriverait à la ville.

KJV ⁵ So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.

BAN ⁶ Et l'Eternel Dieu fit pousser un ricin qui s'éleva au-dessus de Jonas pour lui faire ombre sur la tête, afin de le délivrer de son mal ; et Jonas se réjouit d'une grande joie à cause de ce ricin.

KJV ⁶ And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

BAN ⁷ Et l'Eternel fit venir, au lever de l'aurore le lendemain, un ver qui piqua le ricin, et il sécha.

KJV ⁷ But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.

BAN ⁸ Et voici, au lever du soleil, Dieu fit venir un vent d'orient, brûlant, et le soleil donna sur la tête de Jonas, et il défaillit et demanda de mourir en disant : La mort me vaut mieux que la vie.

KJV ⁸ And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

BAN ⁹ Et Dieu dit à Jonas : Fais-tu bien de te fâcher à cause de ce ricin ? Et il répondit : Je fais bien de me fâcher jusqu'à la mort.

KJV ⁹ And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

BAN ¹⁰ Et I'Eternel dit : Tu t'affliges au sujet d'un ricin pour lequel tu n'as pas travaillé et que tu n'as pas fait grandir, qui est venu en une nuit et qui a péri en une nuit.

KJV ¹⁰ Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:

BAN ¹¹ Et moi, je ne m'affligerais pas au sujet de Ninive, la grande ville, dans laquelle il y a plus de cent vingt mille hommes qui ne savent pas distinguer leur droite de leur gauche, et des bêtes nombreuses !

KJV ¹¹ And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more then sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
