BCC ¹ La parole de Yahweh fut adressée une seconde fois à Jonas, en ces termes :"

KJV ¹ And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,

VULC ¹ Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jonam secundo, dicens :

BCC ² Lève-toi, va à Ninive, la grande ville, et prêche-lui la prédication que je te dirai."

KJV ² Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.

VULC ² Surge, et vade in Niniven, civitatem magnam, et prædica in ea prædicationem quam ego loquor ad te.

BCC ³ Et Jonas se leva et alla à Ninive, selon la parole de Yahweh. Or Ninive était une ville grande devant Dieu, de trois journées de marche.

KJV ³ So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.

VULC ³ Et surrexit Jonas, et abiit in Niniven juxta verbum Domini : et Ninive erat civitas magna, itinere trium dierum.

BCC ⁴ Jonas commença à pénétrer dans la ville la marche d'une journée ; et il prêcha et dit : "encore quarante jours et Ninive sera détruite !..."

KJV ⁴ And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

VULC ⁴ Et cœpit Jonas introire in civitatem itinere diei unius : et clamavit, et dixit : Adhuc quadraginta dies, et Ninive subvertetur.

BCC ⁵ Les gens de Ninive crurent en Dieu ; ils publièrent un jeûne et se revêtirent de sacs, depuis le plus grand jusqu'au plus petit.

KJV ⁵ So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.

VULC ⁵ Et crediderunt viri Ninivitæ in Deum, et prædicaverunt jejunium, et vestiti sunt saccis, a majore usque ad minorem.

BCC ⁶ La chose étant parvenue au roi de Ninive, il se leva de son trône, ôta son manteau, se couvrit d'un sac et s'assît sur la cendre.

KJV ⁶ For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

VULC ⁶ Et pervenit verbum ad regem Ninive : et surrexit de solio suo, et abjecit vestimentum suum a se, et indutus est sacco, et sedit in cinere.

BCC ⁷ Et on cria dans Ninive et on dit, par décret du roi et de ses grands, ces paroles : "que ni hommes ni bêtes, boeufs et brebis, ne mangent rien, ne paissent point et ne boivent point d'eau ;

KJV ⁷ And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:

VULC ⁷ Et clamavit, et dixit in Ninive ex ore regis et principum ejus, dicens : Homines, et jumenta, et boves, et pecora non gustent quidquam : nec pascantur, et aquam non bibant.

BCC ⁸ qu'ils se couvrent de sacs, hommes et bêtes, qu'ils crient à Dieu avec force, et qu'ils se détournent chacun de sa mauvaise voie et des actions de violence que commettent ses mains !

KJV ⁸ But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

VULC ⁸ Et operiantur saccis homines et jumenta, et clament ad Dominum in fortitudine : et convertatur vir a via sua mala, et ab iniquitate quæ est in manibus eorum.

BCC ⁹ Qui sait si Dieu ne viendra pas à se repentir, et s'il ne reviendra pas de l'ardeur de sa colère, en sorte que nous ne périssions point ?"

KJV ⁹ Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

VULC ⁹ Quis scit si convertatur et ignoscat Deus, et revertatur a furore iræ suæ, et non peribimus ?

BCC ¹⁰ Dieu vit ce qu'ils faisaient, comment ils se détournaient de leur mauvaise voie ; et Dieu se repentît du mal qu'il avait annoncé qu'il leur ferait ; et il ne le fit pas.

KJV ¹⁰ And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

VULC ¹⁰ Et vidit Deus opera eorum, quia conversi sunt de via sua mala : et misertus est Deus super malitiam quam locutus fuerat ut faceret eis, et non fecit.

BCC ¹ Jonas en éprouva un vif chagrin, et il fut irrité.

KJV ¹ But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

VULC ¹ Et afflictus est Jonas afflictione magna, et iratus est :

BCC ² Il fit une prière à Yahweh et dit : "Ah ! Yahweh, n'est-ce pas là ce que je disais lorsque j'étais encore dans mon pays ? C'est pourquoi je me suis d'abord enfui à Tharsis ; car je savais que vous êtes un Dieu miséricordieux et clément, lent à la colère, riche en grâce et vous repentant du mal.

KJV ² And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

VULC ² et oravit ad Dominum, et dixit : Obsecro, Domine, numquid non hoc est verbum meum cum adhuc essem in terra mea ? propter hoc præoccupavi ut fugerem in Tharsis : scio enim quia tu Deus clemens et misericors es, patiens et multæ miserationis, et ignoscens super malitia.

BCC ³ Maintenant, Yahweh, retirez donc de moi mon âme, car la mort vaut mieux pour moi que la vie."

KJV ³ Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

VULC ³ Et nunc, Domine, tolle, quæso, animam meam a me, quia melior est mihi mors quam vita.

BCC ⁴ Et Yahweh répondit : "Fais-tu bien de t'irriter ?"

KJV ⁴ Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry?

VULC ⁴ Et dixit Dominus : Putasne bene irasceris tu ?

BCC ⁵ Et Jonas sortit de la ville et s'assit à l'orient de la ville ; là il se fit une hutte et s'assit dessous à l'ombre, jusqu'à ce qu'il vit ce qui arriverait dans la ville.

KJV ⁵ So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.

VULC ⁵ Et egressus est Jonas de civitate, et sedit contra orientem civitatis : et fecit sibimet umbraculum ibi, et sedebat subter illud in umbra, donec videret quid accideret civitati.

BCC ⁶ Et Yahweh-Dieu fit pousser un ricin qui s'éleva au-dessus de Jonas pour qu'il y eût de l'ombre sur sa tête, afin de le délivrer de son mal ; et Jonas éprouva une grande joie à cause du ricin.

KJV ⁶ And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

VULC ⁶ Et præparavit Dominus Deus hederam, et ascendit super caput Jonæ, ut esset umbra super caput ejus, et protegeret eum (laboraverat enim) : et lætatus est Jonas super hedera lætitia magna.

BCC ⁷ Mais Yahweh fit venir, au lever de l'aurore, le lendemain, un ver qui piqua le ricin ; et il sécha.

KJV ⁷ But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.

VULC ⁷ Et paravit Deus vermen ascensu diluculi in crastinum : et percussit hederam, et exaruit.

BCC ⁸ Et quand le soleil se leva, Yahweh fit venir un vent brûlant d'orient ; et le soleil donna sur la tête de Jonas, au point qu'il défaillit. Il demanda de mourir et dit : "La mort vaut mieux pour moi que la vie."

KJV ⁸ And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

VULC ⁸ Et cum ortus fuisset sol, præcepit Dominus vento calido et urenti : et percussit sol super caput Jonæ, et æstuabat : et petivit animæ suæ ut moreretur, et dixit : Melius est mihi mori quam vivere.

BCC ⁹ Alors Dieu dit à Jonas : "Fais-tu bien de t'irriter à cause du ricin ?" Il répondit : "Je fais bien de m'irriter jusqu'à la mort."

KJV ⁹ And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

VULC ⁹ Et dixit Dominus ad Jonam : Putasne bene irasceris tu super hedera ? Et dixit : Bene irascor ego usque ad mortem.

BCC ¹⁰ Et Yahweh dit : "tu t'affliges au sujet du ricin pour lequel tu n'as pas travaillé et que tu n'as pas fait croître, qui est venu en une nuit et qui a péri en une nuit ;

KJV ¹⁰ Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:

VULC ¹⁰ Et dixit Dominus : Tu doles super hederam in qua non laborasti, neque fecisti ut cresceret ; quæ sub una nocte nata est, et sub una nocte periit :

BCC ¹¹ et moi, Je ne m'affligerais pas au sujet de Ninive, la grande ville, dans laquelle il y a plus de cent vingt mille hommes qui ne distinguent pas leur droite de leur gauche, et des animaux en grand nombre !"

KJV ¹¹ And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more then sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

VULC ¹¹ et ego non parcam Ninive, civitati magnæ, in qua sunt plus quam centum viginti millia hominum qui nesciunt quid sit inter dexteram et sinistram suam, et jumenta multa ?
