DRB ¹ Et la parole de l'Éternel [vint] à Jonas une seconde fois, disant :

KJV ¹ And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,

VULC ¹ Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jonam secundo, dicens :

WLC ¹ וַיְהִ֧י דְבַר־ יְהוָ֛ה אֶל־ יוֹנָ֖ה שֵׁנִ֥ית לֵאמֹֽר׃

DRB ² Lève-toi, va à Ninive, la grande ville, et crie-lui selon le cri que je te dirai.

KJV ² Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.

VULC ² Surge, et vade in Niniven, civitatem magnam, et prædica in ea prædicationem quam ego loquor ad te.

WLC ² ק֛וּם לֵ֥ךְ אֶל־ נִֽינְוֵ֖ה הָעִ֣יר הַגְּדוֹלָ֑ה וִּקְרָ֤א אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ אֶת־ הַקְּרִיאָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י דֹּבֵ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ׃

DRB ³ Et Jonas se leva et s'en alla à Ninive, selon la parole de l'Éternel. Or Ninive était une fort grande ville*, de trois journées de chemin.

KJV ³ So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.

VULC ³ Et surrexit Jonas, et abiit in Niniven juxta verbum Domini : et Ninive erat civitas magna, itinere trium dierum.

WLC ³ וַיָּ֣קָם יוֹנָ֗ה וַיֵּ֛לֶךְ אֶל־ נִֽינְוֶ֖ה כִּדְבַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה וְנִֽינְוֵ֗ה הָיְתָ֤ה עִיר־ גְּדוֹלָה֙ לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים מַהֲלַ֖ךְ שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת יָמִֽים׃

DRB ⁴ Et Jonas commença à entrer dans la ville, le chemin d'un jour ; et il cria et dit : Encore quarante jours, et Ninive sera renversée.

KJV ⁴ And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

VULC ⁴ Et cœpit Jonas introire in civitatem itinere diei unius : et clamavit, et dixit : Adhuc quadraginta dies, et Ninive subvertetur.

WLC ⁴ וַיָּ֤חֶל יוֹנָה֙ לָב֣וֹא בָעִ֔יר מַהֲלַ֖ךְ י֣וֹם אֶחָ֑ד וַיִּקְרָא֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר ע֚וֹד אַרְבָּעִ֣ים י֔וֹם וְנִֽינְוֵ֖ה נֶהְפָּֽכֶת׃

DRB ⁵ Et les hommes de Ninive crurent Dieu, et proclamèrent un jeûne, et se vêtirent de sacs, depuis les plus grands d'entre eux jusqu'aux plus petits.

KJV ⁵ So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.

VULC ⁵ Et crediderunt viri Ninivitæ in Deum, et prædicaverunt jejunium, et vestiti sunt saccis, a majore usque ad minorem.

WLC ⁵ וַֽיַּאֲמִ֛ינוּ אַנְשֵׁ֥י נִֽינְוֵ֖ה בֵּֽאלֹהִ֑ים וַיִּקְרְאוּ־ צוֹם֙ וַיִּלְבְּשׁ֣וּ שַׂקִּ֔ים מִגְּדוֹלָ֖ם וְעַד־ קְטַנָּֽם׃

DRB ⁶ Car la parole parvint au roi de Ninive, et il se leva de son trône, et ôta de dessus lui son manteau, et se couvrit d'un sac et s'assit sur la cendre.

KJV ⁶ For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

VULC ⁶ Et pervenit verbum ad regem Ninive : et surrexit de solio suo, et abjecit vestimentum suum a se, et indutus est sacco, et sedit in cinere.

WLC ⁶ וַיִּגַּ֤ע הַדָּבָר֙ אֶל־ מֶ֣לֶך נִֽינְוֵ֔ה וַיָּ֙קָם֙ מִכִּסְא֔וֹ וַיַּעֲבֵ֥ר אַדַּרְתּ֖וֹ מֵֽעָלָ֑יו וַיְכַ֣ס שַׂ֔ק וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב עַל־ הָאֵֽפֶר׃

DRB ⁷ Et il fit crier et dire dans Ninive, par un édit du roi et de ses grands, disant : Que les hommes, et les bêtes, le gros et le menu bétail, ne goûtent de rien ; qu'ils ne paissent pas et ne boivent pas d'eau ;

KJV ⁷ And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:

VULC ⁷ Et clamavit, et dixit in Ninive ex ore regis et principum ejus, dicens : Homines, et jumenta, et boves, et pecora non gustent quidquam : nec pascantur, et aquam non bibant.

WLC ⁷ וַיַּזְעֵ֗ק וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ בְּנִֽינְוֵ֔ה מִטַּ֧עַם הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ וּגְדֹלָ֖יו לֵאמֹ֑ר הָאָדָ֨ם וְהַבְּהֵמָ֜ה הַבָּקָ֣ר וְהַצֹּ֗אן אַֽל־ יִטְעֲמוּ֙ מְא֔וּמָה אַ֨ל־ יִרְע֔וּ וּמַ֖יִם אַל־ יִשְׁתּֽוּ׃

DRB ⁸ et que les hommes et les bêtes soient recouverts de sacs. Et qu'ils crient à Dieu avec force ; et qu'ils reviennent, chacun, de leur mauvaise voie et de la violence qui est en leurs mains.

KJV ⁸ But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

VULC ⁸ Et operiantur saccis homines et jumenta, et clament ad Dominum in fortitudine : et convertatur vir a via sua mala, et ab iniquitate quæ est in manibus eorum.

WLC ⁸ וְיִתְכַּסּ֣וּ שַׂקִּ֗ים הָֽאָדָם֙ וְהַבְּהֵמָ֔ה וְיִקְרְא֥וּ אֶל־ אֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּחָזְקָ֑ה וְיָשֻׁ֗בוּ אִ֚ישׁ מִדַּרְכּ֣וֹ הָֽרָעָ֔ה וּמִן־ הֶחָמָ֖ס אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּכַפֵּיהֶֽם׃

DRB ⁹ Qui sait ? Dieu reviendra et se repentira, et reviendra de l'ardeur de sa colère, et nous ne périrons pas.

KJV ⁹ Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?

VULC ⁹ Quis scit si convertatur et ignoscat Deus, et revertatur a furore iræ suæ, et non peribimus ?

WLC ⁹ מִֽי־ יוֹדֵ֣עַ יָשׁ֔וּב וְנִחַ֖ם הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְשָׁ֛ב מֵחֲר֥וֹן אַפּ֖וֹ וְלֹ֥א נֹאבֵֽד׃

DRB ¹⁰ Et Dieu vit leurs œuvres, qu'ils revenaient de leur mauvaise voie ; et Dieu se repentit du mal qu'il avait parlé de leur faire, et il ne le fit pas.

KJV ¹⁰ And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

VULC ¹⁰ Et vidit Deus opera eorum, quia conversi sunt de via sua mala : et misertus est Deus super malitiam quam locutus fuerat ut faceret eis, et non fecit.

WLC ¹⁰ וַיַּ֤רְא הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ אֶֽת־ מַ֣עֲשֵׂיהֶ֔ם כִּי־ שָׁ֖בוּ מִדַּרְכָּ֣ם הָרָעָ֑ה וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים עַל־ הָרָעָ֛ה אֲשֶׁר־ דִּבֶּ֥ר לַעֲשׂוֹת־ לָהֶ֖ם וְלֹ֥א עָשָֽׂה׃

DRB ¹ Mais Jonas trouva [cela] très mauvais, et il fut irrité.

KJV ¹ But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.

VULC ¹ Et afflictus est Jonas afflictione magna, et iratus est :

WLC ¹ וַיֵּ֥רַע אֶל־ יוֹנָ֖ה רָעָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֑ה וַיִּ֖חַר לֽוֹ׃

DRB ² Et il pria l'Éternel, et dit : Éternel, je te prie, n'était-ce pas là ma parole, quand j'étais encore dans mon pays ? C'est pourquoi j'ai d'abord voulu m'enfuir à Tarsis, car je savais que tu es un *Dieu qui fais grâce et qui es miséricordieux, lent à la colère et grand en bonté et qui te repens du mal [dont tu as menacé] ;

KJV ² And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

VULC ² et oravit ad Dominum, et dixit : Obsecro, Domine, numquid non hoc est verbum meum cum adhuc essem in terra mea ? propter hoc præoccupavi ut fugerem in Tharsis : scio enim quia tu Deus clemens et misericors es, patiens et multæ miserationis, et ignoscens super malitia.

WLC ² וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֨ל אֶל־ יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּאמַ֗ר אָנָּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ הֲלוֹא־ זֶ֣ה דְבָרִ֗י עַד־ הֱיוֹתִי֙ עַל־ אַדְמָתִ֔י עַל־ כֵּ֥ן קִדַּ֖מְתִּי לִבְרֹ֣חַ תַּרְשִׁ֑ישָׁה כִּ֣י יָדַ֗עְתִּי כִּ֤י אַתָּה֙ אֵֽל־ חַנּ֣וּן וְרַח֔וּם אֶ֤רֶךְ אַפַּ֙יִם֙ וְרַב־ חֶ֔סֶד וְנִחָ֖ם עַל־ הָרָעָֽה׃

DRB ³ et maintenant, Éternel, je t'en prie, prends-moi ma vie, car mieux me vaut la mort que la vie.

KJV ³ Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

VULC ³ Et nunc, Domine, tolle, quæso, animam meam a me, quia melior est mihi mors quam vita.

WLC ³ וְעַתָּ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה קַח־ נָ֥א אֶת־ נַפְשִׁ֖י מִמֶּ֑נִּי כִּ֛י ט֥וֹב מוֹתִ֖י מֵחַיָּֽי׃

DRB ⁴ Et l'Éternel dit : Fais-tu bien de t'irriter ?

KJV ⁴ Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry?

VULC ⁴ Et dixit Dominus : Putasne bene irasceris tu ?

WLC ⁴ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֔ה הַהֵיטֵ֖ב חָ֥רָה לָֽךְ׃

DRB ⁵ Et Jonas sortit de la ville, et s'assit à l'orient de la ville ; et il se fit là une cabane, et s'assit dessous à l'ombre, jusqu'à ce qu'il vît ce qui arriverait à la ville.

KJV ⁵ So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.

VULC ⁵ Et egressus est Jonas de civitate, et sedit contra orientem civitatis : et fecit sibimet umbraculum ibi, et sedebat subter illud in umbra, donec videret quid accideret civitati.

WLC ⁵ וַיֵּצֵ֤א יוֹנָה֙ מִן־ הָעִ֔יר וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב מִקֶּ֣דֶם לָעִ֑יר וַיַּעַשׂ֩ ל֨וֹ שָׁ֜ם סֻכָּ֗ה וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב תַּחְתֶּ֙יהָ֙ בַּצֵּ֔ל עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִרְאֶ֔ה מַה־ יִּהְיֶ֖ה בָּעִֽיר׃

DRB ⁶ Et l'Éternel Dieu prépara un kikajon* et le fit monter au-dessus de Jonas, pour faire ombre sur sa tête, pour le délivrer de sa misère, et Jonas se réjouit d'une grande joie à cause du kikajon.

KJV ⁶ And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

VULC ⁶ Et præparavit Dominus Deus hederam, et ascendit super caput Jonæ, ut esset umbra super caput ejus, et protegeret eum (laboraverat enim) : et lætatus est Jonas super hedera lætitia magna.

WLC ⁶ וַיְמַ֣ן יְהוָֽה־ אֱ֠לֹהִים קִיקָי֞וֹן וַיַּ֣עַל ׀ מֵעַ֣ל לְיוֹנָ֗ה לִֽהְי֥וֹת צֵל֙ עַל־ רֹאשׁ֔וֹ לְהַצִּ֥יל ל֖וֹ מֵרָֽעָת֑וֹ וַיִּשְׂמַ֥ח יוֹנָ֛ה עַל־ הַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹן שִׂמְחָ֥ה גְדוֹלָֽה׃

DRB ⁷ Et Dieu prépara un ver le lendemain, au lever de l'aurore, et il rongea* le kikajon, et il sécha.

KJV ⁷ But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.

VULC ⁷ Et paravit Deus vermen ascensu diluculi in crastinum : et percussit hederam, et exaruit.

WLC ⁷ וַיְמַ֤ן הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ תּוֹלַ֔עַת בַּעֲל֥וֹת הַשַּׁ֖חַר לַֽמָּחֳרָ֑ת וַתַּ֥ךְ אֶת־ הַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹן וַיִּיבָֽשׁ׃

DRB ⁸ Et il arriva que, quand le soleil se leva, Dieu prépara un doux vent d'orient, et le soleil frappa la tête de Jonas, et il défaillait, et il demanda la mort pour son âme, et dit : Mieux me vaut la mort que la vie.

KJV ⁸ And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

VULC ⁸ Et cum ortus fuisset sol, præcepit Dominus vento calido et urenti : et percussit sol super caput Jonæ, et æstuabat : et petivit animæ suæ ut moreretur, et dixit : Melius est mihi mori quam vivere.

WLC ⁸ וַיְהִ֣י ׀ כִּזְרֹ֣חַ הַשֶּׁ֗מֶשׁ וַיְמַ֨ן אֱלֹהִ֜ים ר֤וּחַ קָדִים֙ חֲרִישִׁ֔ית וַתַּ֥ךְ הַשֶּׁ֛מֶשׁ עַל־ רֹ֥אשׁ יוֹנָ֖ה וַיִּתְעַלָּ֑ף וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל אֶת־ נַפְשׁוֹ֙ לָמ֔וּת וַיֹּ֕אמֶר ט֥וֹב מוֹתִ֖י מֵחַיָּֽי׃

DRB ⁹ Et Dieu dit à Jonas : Fais-tu bien de t'irriter à cause du kikajon ? Et il dit : Je fais bien de m'irriter jusqu'à la mort.

KJV ⁹ And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

VULC ⁹ Et dixit Dominus ad Jonam : Putasne bene irasceris tu super hedera ? Et dixit : Bene irascor ego usque ad mortem.

WLC ⁹ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־ יוֹנָ֔ה הַהֵיטֵ֥ב חָרָֽה־ לְךָ֖ עַל־ הַקִּֽיקָי֑וֹן וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הֵיטֵ֥ב חָֽרָה־ לִ֖י עַד־ מָֽוֶת׃

DRB ¹⁰ Et l'Éternel dit : Tu as pitié du kikajon pour lequel tu n'as pas travaillé, et que tu n'as pas fait croître ; qui, né en une nuit, a péri en une nuit ;

KJV ¹⁰ Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:

VULC ¹⁰ Et dixit Dominus : Tu doles super hederam in qua non laborasti, neque fecisti ut cresceret ; quæ sub una nocte nata est, et sub una nocte periit :

WLC ¹⁰ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֔ה אַתָּ֥ה חַ֙סְתָּ֙ עַל־ הַקִּ֣יקָי֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־ עָמַ֥לְתָּ בּ֖וֹ וְלֹ֣א גִדַּלְתּ֑וֹ שֶׁבִּן־ לַ֥יְלָה הָיָ֖ה וּבִן־ לַ֥יְלָה אָבָֽד׃

DRB ¹¹ et moi, je n'aurais pas pitié de Ninive, la grande ville, dans laquelle il y a plus de cent vingt mille êtres humains qui ne savent pas distinguer entre leur droite et leur gauche, et [aussi] beaucoup de bétail !

KJV ¹¹ And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more then sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

VULC ¹¹ et ego non parcam Ninive, civitati magnæ, in qua sunt plus quam centum viginti millia hominum qui nesciunt quid sit inter dexteram et sinistram suam, et jumenta multa ?

WLC ¹¹ וַֽאֲנִי֙ לֹ֣א אָח֔וּס עַל־ נִינְוֵ֖ה הָעִ֣יר הַגְּדוֹלָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֶשׁ־ בָּ֡הּ הַרְבֵּה֩ מִֽשְׁתֵּים־ עֶשְׂרֵ֨ה רִבּ֜וֹ אָדָ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ יָדַע֙ בֵּין־ יְמִינ֣וֹ לִשְׂמֹאל֔וֹ וּבְהֵמָ֖ה רַבָּֽה׃
