   ⁷ Et Josué monta de Guilgal, lui et tout le peuple de guerre avec lui, tous les vaillants hommes. ⁸ Et l'Éternel dit à Josué : Ne les crains pas, car je les ai livrés en ta main ; pas un d'entre eux ne tiendra devant toi. ⁹ Et Josué arriva sur eux tout à coup ; il monta de Guilgal toute la nuit. ¹⁰ Et l'Éternel les mit en déroute devant Israël, qui leur infligea une grande défaite près de Gabaon, et les poursuivit par le chemin de la montée de Beth-Horon, et les battit jusqu'à Azéka et jusqu'à Makkéda. ¹¹ Et il arriva que, comme ils fuyaient devant Israël - ils étaient à la descente de Beth-Horon, - l'Éternel jeta des cieux de grosses pierres sur eux, jusqu'à Azéka, et ils moururent ; ceux qui moururent des pierres de grêle furent plus nombreux que ceux que les fils d'Israël tuèrent par l'épée. ¹² Alors Josué parla à l'Éternel, le jour où l'Éternel livra les Amoréens entre les mains des* fils d'Israël ; et il dit en présence d'Israël : Soleil, arrête-toi sur Gabaon ; et toi, lune, en la vallée d'Ajalon ! ¹³ Et le soleil s'arrêta, et la lune demeura où elle était, jusqu'à ce que la nation se fût vengée de ses ennemis. Cela n'est-il pas écrit dans le livre de Jashar* ? Et le soleil demeura au milieu des cieux, et ne se hâta point de se coucher, environ un jour entier. ¹⁴ Et il n'y a point eu de jour comme celui-là, ni avant ni après, où l'Éternel écoutât la voix d'un homme, car l'Éternel combattait pour Israël.

   ⁷ So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour. ⁸ And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee. ⁹ Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night. ¹⁰ And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah. ¹¹ And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword. ¹² Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. ¹³ And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. ¹⁴ And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.

   ⁷ Ascenditque Josue de Galgalis, et omnis exercitus bellatorum cum eo, viri fortissimi.
   ⁸ Dixitque Dominus ad Josue : Ne timeas eos : in manus enim tuas tradidi illos : nullus ex eis tibi resistere poterit.
   ⁹ Irruit itaque Josue super eos repente, tota nocte ascendens de Galgalis.
   ¹⁰ Et conturbavit eos Dominus a facie Israël : contrivitque plaga magna in Gabaon, ac persecutus est eos per viam ascensus Bethoron, et percussit usque Azeca et Maceda.
   ¹¹ Cumque fugerent filios Israël, et essent in descensu Bethoron, Dominus misit super eos lapides magnos de cælo usque ad Azeca : et mortui sunt multo plures lapidibus grandinis, quam quos gladio percusserant filii Israël.
   ¹² Tunc locutus est Josue Domino, in die qua tradidit Amorrhæum in conspectu filiorum Israël, dixitque coram eis : [Sol, contra Gabaon ne movearis,
et luna contra vallem Ajalon.
   ¹³ Steteruntque sol et luna,
donec ulcisceretur se gens de inimicis suis.] Nonne scriptum est hoc in libro justorum ? Stetit itaque sol in medio cæli, et non festinavit occumbere spatio unius diei.
   ¹⁴ Non fuit antea nec postea tam longa dies, obediente Domino voci hominis, et pugnante pro Israël.
