   ¹ Or, voyant les foules, il monta sur la montagne ; et s'étant assis, ses disciples s'approchèrent de lui ; ² et ouvrant sa bouche, il les enseignait en disant : ³ Heureux les pauvres en esprit, parce que le royaume des cieux est à eux. ⁴ Heureux ceux qui pleurent, parce qu'ils seront consolés. ⁵ Heureux ceux qui sont doux, parce qu'ils hériteront la terre. ⁶ Heureux ceux qui ont faim et soif de la justice, parce qu'ils seront rassasiés. ⁷ Heureux les miséricordieux, parce qu'ils obtiendront miséricorde. ⁸ Heureux ceux qui sont purs de coeur, parce qu'ils verront Dieu. ⁹ Heureux ceux qui procurent la paix, parce qu'ils seront appelés fils de Dieu. ¹⁰ Heureux ceux qui sont persécutés à cause de la justice, parce que le royaume des cieux est à eux. ¹¹ Heureux êtes-vous, lorsqu'on vous dira des injures, et qu'on vous persécutera, et qu'on dira faussement contre vous toute sorte de mal à cause de moi. ¹² Réjouissez-vous et tressaillez de joie, parce que votre récompense est grande dans les cieux ; car c'est ainsi qu'on a persécuté les prophètes qui ont été avant vous.
   ¹³ Vous êtes le sel de la terre ; mais si le sel perd sa saveur, avec quoi sera-t-il salé ? Il n'est plus bon à rien sinon à être jeté dehors et à être foulé aux pieds par les hommes. ¹⁴ Vous êtes la lumière du monde. Une ville située sur une montagne ne peut être cachée. ¹⁵ On n'allume pas non plus une lampe pour la mettre sous le boisseau, mais sur le pied-de-lampe, et elle luit pour tous ceux qui sont dans la maison. ¹⁶ Que votre lumière luise ainsi devant les hommes, afin qu'ils voient vos bonnes oeuvres, et qu'ils glorifient votre Père qui est dans les cieux.
   ¹⁷ Ne pensez pas que je sois venu abolir la loi ou les prophètes ; je ne suis point venu abolir, mais accomplir. ¹⁸ Car en vérité je vous le dis, jusqu'à ce que le ciel et la terre aient passé, il ne passera pas de la loi un seul iota, ni un seul trait de lettre, jusqu'à ce que tout ait été accompli. ¹⁹ Celui donc qui aura violé l'un de ces plus petits commandements, et qui aura ainsi enseigné les hommes, sera appelé le plus petit dans le royaume des cieux ; mais celui qui les aura observés et enseignés, celui-là sera appelé grand dans le royaume des cieux. ²⁰ Car je vous dis que si votre justice ne surpasse celle des scribes et des pharisiens, vous n'entrerez point dans le royaume des cieux.
   ²¹ Vous avez entendu qu'il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne tueras point ; et celui qui aura tué sera punissable par le jugement. ²² Mais moi, je vous dis que quiconque se met en colère contre son frère, sera punissable par le jugement ; et celui qui aura dit à son frère : Raca ! sera punissable par le sanhédrin, et celui qui lui dira fou, sera punissable par la géhenne du feu. ²³ Si donc tu apportes ton offrande à l'autel, et que là tu te souviennes que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi, ²⁴ laisse là ton offrande devant l'autel, et va premièrement, réconcilie-toi avec ton frère, et alors, viens présenter ton offrande. ²⁵ Accorde-toi promptement avec ton adversaire, pendant que tu es en chemin avec lui, de peur que l'adversaire ne te livre au juge et le juge à l'huissier, et que tu ne sois jeté en prison. ²⁶ Je te le dis en vérité, tu ne sortiras pas de là, jusqu'à ce que tu aies payé le dernier quadrant.
   ²⁷ Vous avez entendu qu'il a été dit : Tu ne commettras point adultère. ²⁸ Mais moi, je vous dis que quiconque regarde une femme pour la convoiter, a déjà commis adultère avec elle dans son coeur. ²⁹ Or si ton oeil droit te fait tomber, arrache-le et le jette loin de toi, car il vaut mieux pour toi qu'un de tes membres périsse et que tout ton corps ne soit pas jeté dans la géhenne. ³⁰ Et si ta main droite te fait tomber, coupe-la, et la jette loin de toi, car il vaut mieux pour toi qu'un de tes membres périsse et que tout ton corps n'aille pas dans la géhenne.
   ³¹ Il a été dit aussi : Si quelqu'un répudie sa femme, qu'il lui donne une lettre de divorce. ³² Mais moi, je vous dis que quiconque répudie sa femme, si ce n'est pour cause de fornication, la fait devenir adultère ; et que quiconque épouse une femme répudiée, commet adultère.
   ³³ Vous avez encore entendu qu'il a été dit aux anciens : Tu ne te parjureras point, mais tu tiendras tes serments au Seigneur. ³⁴ Mais moi, je vous dis de ne point jurer du tout ; ni par le ciel, parce que c'est le trône de Dieu ; ³⁵ ni par la terre, parce que c'est le marchepied de ses pieds ; ni par Jérusalem, parce que c'est la ville du grand Roi. ³⁶ Tu ne jureras pas non plus par ta tête, parce que tu ne peux rendre un seul cheveu blanc ou noir. ³⁷ Mais que votre parole soit oui, oui, non, non ; ce qu'on dit de plus vient du malin.
   ³⁸ Vous avez entendu qu'il a été dit : oeil pour oeil, et dent pour dent. ³⁹ Mais moi, je vous dis de ne pas résister au méchant ; mais quiconque te frappe sur la joue droite, présente-lui aussi l'autre. ⁴⁰ Et à celui qui veut plaider contre toi, et prendre ta tunique, laisse-lui aussi le manteau. ⁴¹ Et quiconque te contraindra de faire un mille, fais-en deux avec lui. ⁴² Donne à celui qui te demande, et ne te détourne point de celui qui veut emprunter de toi.
   ⁴³ Vous avez entendu qu'il a été dit : Tu aimeras ton prochain, et tu haïras ton ennemi. ⁴⁴ Mais moi, je vous dis : Aimez vos ennemis et priez pour ceux qui vous persécutent ; ⁴⁵ afin que vous soyez fils de votre Père qui est dans les cieux ; car il fait lever son soleil sur les méchants et sur les bons, et il fait pleuvoir sur les justes et sur les injustes. ⁴⁶ Car si vous aimez ceux qui vous aiment, quelle récompense en aurez-vous ? les péagers aussi ne le font-ils pas ? ⁴⁷ Et si vous ne faites accueil qu'à vos frères, que faites-vous d'extraordinaire ? Les païens aussi ne le font-ils pas ? ⁴⁸ Soyez donc parfaits, comme votre Père céleste est parfait.

Matthieu 6

   ¹ Prenez garde de ne pas pratiquer votre justice devant les hommes, afin d'être vus par eux ; autrement vous n'avez point de récompense auprès de votre Père qui est dans les cieux. ² Quand donc tu fais l'aumône, ne sonne pas de la trompette devant toi, comme font les hypocrites, dans les synagogues et dans les rues, afin qu'ils soient glorifiés par les hommes. En vérité, je vous le dis, ils ont déjà leur récompense. ³ Mais toi, quand tu fais l'aumône, que ta main gauche ne sache pas ce que fait ta droite, ⁴ afin que ton aumône soit faite dans le secret ; et ton Père qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra.
   ⁵ Et quand vous priez, ne soyez pas comme les hypocrites, car ils aiment à prier en se tenant debout dans les synagogues et aux coins des rues, afin qu'ils soient vus des hommes. En vérité, je vous le dis, ils ont déjà leur récompense. ⁶ Mais toi, quand tu pries, entre dans ta chambre ; et ayant fermé ta porte, prie ton Père qui est là dans le secret ; et ton Père qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra. ⁷ Or, quand vous priez, n'usez pas de vaines redites, comme les païens, car ils pensent qu'avec beaucoup de paroles, ils seront exaucés. ⁸ Ne leur ressemblez donc pas, car votre Père sait de quoi vous avez besoin, avant que vous le lui demandiez. ⁹ Vous donc, priez ainsi : Notre Père qui es dans les cieux, que ton nom soit sanctifié. ¹⁰ Que ton règne vienne. Que ta volonté soit faite sur la terre comme au ciel. ¹¹ Donne-nous aujourd'hui notre pain quotidien. ¹² Et remets-nous nos dettes, comme nous aussi nous les avons remises à nos débiteurs. ¹³ Et ne nous induis point en tentation, mais délivre-nous du mal. ¹⁴ Car si vous pardonnez aux hommes leurs offenses, votre Père céleste vous pardonnera aussi ; ¹⁵ mais si vous ne pardonnez pas aux hommes, votre Père ne vous pardonnera pas non plus vos offenses.
   ¹⁶ Et quand vous jeûnez, ne prenez pas un air triste comme les hypocrites ; car ils se rendent le visage tout défait, afin qu'il paraisse aux hommes qu'ils jeûnent : En vérité je vous le dis, ils ont déjà leur récompense. ¹⁷ Mais toi, quand tu jeûnes, oins ta tête et lave ton visage ; ¹⁸ afin qu'il ne paraisse pas aux hommes que tu jeûnes, mais à ton Père qui est dans le secret, et ton Père qui voit dans le secret, te le rendra.
   ¹⁹ Ne vous amassez pas des trésors sur la terre, où la teigne et la rouille détruisent, et où les voleurs percent et dérobent ; ²⁰ mais amassez-vous des trésors dans le ciel, où ni la teigne ni la rouille ne détruisent, et où les voleurs ne percent ni ne dérobent : ²¹ car où est ton trésor, là sera aussi ton coeur. ²² La lampe du corps est l'oeil : si donc ton oeil est sain, tout ton corps sera éclairé ; ²³ mais si ton oeil est mauvais, tout ton corps sera ténébreux. Si donc la lumière qui est en toi est ténèbres, combien seront grandes les ténèbres ! ²⁴ Nul ne peut servir deux, maîtres ; car, ou il haïra l'un et aimera l'autre ou il s'attachera à l'un et méprisera l'autre. Vous ne pouvez servir Dieu et Mammon.
   ²⁵ C'est pourquoi je vous dis : ne vous inquiétez point pour votre vie, de ce que vous mangerez et de ce que vous boirez ; ni pour votre corps, de quoi vous serez vêtus. La vie n'est-elle pas plus que la nourriture, et le corps plus que le vêtement ? ²⁶ Considérez les oiseaux du ciel : ils ne sèment ni ne moissonnent, ni n'amassent dans des greniers, et votre Père céleste les nourrit. Ne valez-vous pas beaucoup plus qu'eux ? ²⁷ Qui d'entre vous peut, par ses inquiétudes, ajouter une seule coudée à la durée de sa vie ? ²⁸ Et quant au vêtement, pourquoi vous inquiétez-vous ? Observez les lis des champs, comment ils croissent ; ils ne travaillent ni ne filent. ²⁹ Cependant, je vous dis que Salomon même, dans toute sa gloire, n'était pas vêtu comme l'un d'eux. ³⁰ Si donc Dieu revêt ainsi l'herbe des champs, qui est aujourd'hui, et qui demain est jetée dans le four, ne vous revêtira-t-il pas beaucoup plutôt, ô gens de petite foi ? ³¹ Ne vous inquiétez donc point, disant : Que mangerons-nous ? ou que boirons-nous ? ou de quoi serons-nous vêtus ? ³² car toutes ces choses, les païens les recherchent ; car votre Père céleste sait que vous avez besoin de toutes ces choses. ³³ Mais cherchez premièrement le royaume de Dieu et sa justice, et toutes ces choses vous seront données par-dessus. ³⁴ Ne vous inquiétez donc point pour le lendemain ; car le lendemain aura souci de lui-même. A chaque jour suffit sa peine.

Matthieu 7

   ¹ Ne jugez point, afin que vous ne soyez point jugés. ² Car du même jugement dont vous jugez, vous serez jugés ; et de la même mesure dont vous mesurez, il vous sera mesuré. ³ Et pourquoi regardes-tu la paille qui est dans l'oeil de ton frère, tandis que tu n'aperçois pas la poutre qui est dans ton oeil ? ⁴ Ou comment dis-tu à ton frère : Permets que j'ôte cette paille de ton oeil, et voici, la poutre est dans ton oeil ? ⁵ Hypocrite, ôte premièrement de ton oeil la poutre, et alors tu verras pour ôter le brin de paille de l'oeil de ton frère.
   ⁶ Ne donnez point ce qui est saint aux chiens, et ne jetez point vos perles devant les pourceaux ; de peur qu'ils ne les foulent à leurs pieds, et que, se tournant, ils ne vous déchirent.
   ⁷ Demandez, et il vous sera donné ; cherchez, et vous trouverez ; heurtez, et il vous sera ouvert ; ⁸ car quiconque demande, reçoit ; et qui cherche, trouve ; et à celui qui heurte, il sera ouvert. ⁹ Ou quel est l'homme d'entre vous qui, si son fils lui demande du pain, lui donnera une pierre ? ¹⁰ Ou encore, s'il lui demande du poisson, lui donnera-t-il un serpent ? ¹¹ Si donc, vous, qui êtes mauvais, savez donner à vos enfants de bonnes choses, combien plus votre Père qui est dans les cieux donnera-t-il de bonnes choses à ceux qui les lui demandent ?
   ¹² Toutes les choses donc que vous voulez que les hommes vous fassent, faites-les leur aussi vous-mêmes, car c'est la loi et les prophètes.
   ¹³ Entrez par la porte étroite, car large est la porte et spacieux le chemin qui mène à la perdition, et nombreux sont ceux qui y entrent. ¹⁴ Combien étroite est la porte et resserré le chemin qui mène à la vie ! et il y en a peu qui le trouvent.
   ¹⁵ Gardez-vous des faux prophètes, qui viennent à vous en vêtements de brebis, mais qui au dedans sont des loups ravisseurs. ¹⁶ Vous les reconnaîtrez à leurs fruits. Cueille-t-on des raisins sur des épines, ou des figues sur des chardons ? ¹⁷ Ainsi, tout bon arbre produit de bons fruits ; mais le mauvais arbre produit de mauvais fruits. ¹⁸ Un bon arbre ne peut produire de mauvais fruits, ni un mauvais arbre produire de bons fruits. ¹⁹ Tout arbre qui ne produit pas de bons fruits est coupé et jeté au feu. ²⁰ C'est donc à leurs fruits que vous les reconnaîtrez. ²¹ Ce n'est pas quiconque me dit : Seigneur, Seigneur, qui entrera dans le royaume des cieux ; mais celui qui fait la volonté de mon Père qui est dans les cieux. ²² Plusieurs me diront en ce jour-là : Seigneur, Seigneur, n'est-ce pas en ton nom que nous avons prophétisé ? et en ton nom que nous avons chassé des démons ? et en ton nom que nous avons fait plusieurs miracles ? ²³ Et alors je leur dirai ouvertement : Je ne vous ai jamais connus. Retirez-vous de moi, vous qui faites l'iniquité.
   ²⁴ Quiconque donc entend ces paroles que je dis, et les met en pratique, sera comparé à un homme prudent, qui a bâti sa maison sur le roc. ²⁵ Et la pluie est tombée, et les torrents sont venus, et les vents ont soufflé et se sont jetés contre cette maison-là ; elle n'est point tombée, car elle avait été fondée sur le roc. ²⁶ Et quiconque entend ces paroles que je dis, et ne les met pas en pratique, sera comparé à un homme insensé, qui a bâti sa maison sur le sable. ²⁷ Et la pluie est tombée, et les torrents sont venus, et les vents ont soufflé, et ils ont heurté contre cette maison-là ; et elle est tombée, et sa chute a été grande.
   ²⁸ Et il arriva, lorsque Jésus eut achevé ces discours, que les foules étaient extrêmement frappées de son enseignement. ²⁹ Car il les enseignait comme ayant autorité, et non pas comme leurs scribes.

   ¹ And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: ² And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

   ²⁷ Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: ²⁸ But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. ²⁹ And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. ³⁰ And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. ³¹ It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: ³² But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
   ³³ Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: ³⁴ But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: ³⁵ Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. ³⁶ Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. ³⁷ But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
   ³⁸ Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: ³⁹ But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. ⁴⁰ And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. ⁴¹ And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. ⁴² Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
   ⁴³ Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. ⁴⁴ But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; ⁴⁵ That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. ⁴⁶ For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? ⁴⁷ And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? ⁴⁸ Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

   ¹ Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. ² Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. ³ But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: ⁴ That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
   ⁵ And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. ⁶ But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. ⁷ But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. ⁸ Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
   ⁹ After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. ¹⁰ Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. ¹¹ Give us this day our daily bread. ¹² And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. ¹³ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. ¹⁴ For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: ¹⁵ But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
   ¹⁶ Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. ¹⁷ But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; ¹⁸ That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
   ¹⁹ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: ²⁰ But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: ²¹ For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. ²² The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. ²³ But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! ²⁴ No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
   ²⁵ Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? ²⁶ Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? ²⁷ Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? ²⁸ And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: ²⁹ And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. ³⁰ Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? ³¹ Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? ³² (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. ³³ But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. ³⁴ Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Matthieu 7

   ¹ Judge not, that ye be not judged. ² For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. ³ And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? ⁴ Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? ⁵ Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. ⁶ Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
   ⁷ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: ⁸ For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. ⁹ Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? ¹⁰ Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? ¹¹ If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
   ¹² Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. ¹³ Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: ¹⁴ Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
   ¹⁵ Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. ¹⁶ Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? ¹⁷ Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. ¹⁹ Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. ²⁰ Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
   ²¹ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. ²² Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? ²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. ²⁴ Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: ²⁵ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. ²⁶ And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: ²⁷ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. ²⁸ And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: ²⁹ For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
