DRB ¹ Et il arriva au mois de Nisan, la vingtième année du roi Artaxerxès, comme le vin était devant lui, que je pris le vin et le donnai au roi ; et je n'avais pas été triste en sa présence.

KJV ¹ And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.

VULC ¹ Factum est autem in mense Nisan, anno vigesimo Artaxerxis regis : et vinum erat ante eum, et levavi vinum, et dedi regi : et eram quasi languidus ante faciem ejus.

WLC ¹ וַיְהִ֣י ׀ בְּחֹ֣דֶשׁ נִיסָ֗ן שְׁנַ֥ת עֶשְׂרִ֛ים לְאַרְתַּחְשַׁ֥סְתְּא הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ יַ֣יִן לְפָנָ֑יו וָאֶשָּׂ֤א אֶת־ הַיַּ֙יִן֙ וָאֶתְּנָ֣ה לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְלֹא־ הָיִ֥יתִי רַ֖ע לְפָנָֽיו׃

DRB ² Et le roi me dit : Pourquoi as-tu mauvais visage, et pourtant tu n'es pas malade ? Cela n'est rien que de la tristesse de cœur.

KJV ² Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,

VULC ² Dixitque mihi rex : Quare vultus tuus tristis est, cum te ægrotum non videam ? non est hoc frustra, sed malum nescio quod in corde tuo est. Et timui valde, ac nimis :

WLC ² וַיֹּאמֶר֩ לִ֨י הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ מַדּ֣וּעַ ׀ פָּנֶ֣יךָ רָעִ֗ים וְאַתָּה֙ אֵֽינְךָ֣ חוֹלֶ֔ה אֵ֣ין זֶ֔ה כִּי־ אִ֖ם רֹ֣עַֽ לֵ֑ב וָאִירָ֖א הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃

DRB ³ Alors j'eus extrêmement peur. Et je dis au roi : Que le roi vive à toujours ! Pourquoi mon visage ne serait-il pas triste, quand la ville, le lieu* des sépulcres de mes pères, est dévastée, et que ses portes sont consumées par le feu ?

KJV ³ And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?

VULC ³ et dixi regi : Rex, in æternum vive : quare non mœreat vultus meus, quia civitas domus sepulchrorum patris mei deserta est, et portæ ejus combustæ sunt igni ?

DRB ⁴ Et le roi me dit : Que demandes-tu ?

KJV ⁴ Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

VULC ⁴ Et ait mihi rex : Pro qua re postulas ? Et oravi Deum cæli,

WLC ⁴ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לִי֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ עַל־ מַה־ זֶּ֖ה אַתָּ֣ה מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ וָֽאֶתְפַּלֵּ֔ל אֶל־ אֱלֹהֵ֖י הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃

DRB ⁵ Et je priai le Dieu des cieux ; et je dis au roi : Si le roi le trouve bon, et si ton serviteur est agréable devant toi, qu'il m'envoie en Juda, à la ville des sépulcres de mes pères, et je la bâtirai.

KJV ⁵ And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.

VULC ⁵ et dixi ad regem : Si videtur regi bonum, et si placet servus tuus ante faciem tuam, ut mittas me in Judæam ad civitatem sepulchri patris mei, et ædificabo eam.

WLC ⁵ וָאֹמַ֣ר לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אִם־ עַל־ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ ט֔וֹב וְאִם־ יִיטַ֥ב עַבְדְּךָ֖ לְפָנֶ֑יךָ אֲשֶׁ֧ר תִּשְׁלָחֵ֣נִי אֶל־ יְהוּדָ֗ה אֶל־ עִ֛יר קִבְר֥וֹת אֲבֹתַ֖י וְאֶבְנֶֽנָּה׃

DRB ⁶ Alors le roi me dit - et la reine était assise à son côté : - Combien de temps durera ton voyage, et quand reviendras-tu ? Et il plut au roi de m'envoyer, et je lui fixai un temps.

KJV ⁶ And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

VULC ⁶ Dixitque mihi rex, et regina quæ sedebat juxta eum : Usque ad quod tempus erit iter tuum, et quando reverteris ? Et placuit ante vultum regis, et misit me : et constitui ei tempus.

WLC ⁶ וַיֹּאמֶר֩ לִ֨י הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ וְהַשֵּׁגַ֣ל ׀ יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת אֶצְל֗וֹ עַד־ מָתַ֛י יִהְיֶ֥ה מַֽהֲלָכֲךָ֖ וּמָתַ֣י תָּשׁ֑וּב וַיִּיטַ֤ב לִפְנֵֽי־ הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֔נִי וָֽאֶתְּנָ֥ה ל֖וֹ זְמָֽן׃

DRB ⁷ Et je dis au roi : Si le roi le trouve bon, qu'il me donne des lettres pour les gouverneurs de l'autre côté du fleuve*, pour qu'ils me fassent passer jusqu'à ce que j'arrive en Juda,

KJV ⁷ Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;

VULC ⁷ Et dixi regi : Si regi videtur bonum, epistolas det mihi ad duces regionis trans flumen, ut traducant me, donec veniam in Judæam :

WLC ⁷ וָאוֹמַר֮ לַמֶּלֶךְ֒ אִם־ עַל־ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ ט֔וֹב אִגְּרוֹת֙ יִתְּנוּ־ לִ֔י עַֽל־ פַּחֲו֖וֹת עֵ֣בֶר הַנָּהָ֑ר אֲשֶׁר֙ יַעֲבִיר֔וּנִי עַ֥ד אֲשֶׁר־ אָב֖וֹא אֶל־ יְהוּדָֽה׃

DRB ⁸ et une lettre pour Asaph, gardien de la forêt du roi, afin qu'il me donne du bois pour faire la charpente des portes du château fort attenant à la maison, et pour la muraille de la ville, et pour la maison dans laquelle je dois entrer. Et le roi me les donna, selon que la bonne main de mon Dieu était sur moi.

KJV ⁸ And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
