KJV ¹ And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.

KJV ² Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,

OST ² Mais le roi me dit: Pourquoi as-tu mauvais visage, puisque tu n'es point malade? Cela ne vient que de quelque tristesse de coeur. Alors je craignis fort;

WLC ² וַיֹּאמֶר֩ לִ֨י הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ מַדּ֣וּעַ ׀ פָּנֶ֣יךָ רָעִ֗ים וְאַתָּה֙ אֵֽינְךָ֣ חוֹלֶ֔ה אֵ֣ין זֶ֔ה כִּי־ אִ֖ם רֹ֣עַֽ לֵ֑ב וָאִירָ֖א הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃

KJV ³ And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?

OST ³ Et je répondis au roi: Que le roi vive à jamais! Comment n'aurais-je pas mauvais visage, quand la ville, lieu des tombeaux de mes pères, demeure désolée, et que ses portes ont été consumées par le feu?

WLC ³ וָאֹמַ֣ר לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לְעוֹלָ֣ם יִחְיֶ֑ה מַדּ֜וּעַ לֹא־ יֵרְע֣וּ פָנַ֗י אֲשֶׁ֨ר הָעִ֜יר בֵּית־ קִבְר֤וֹת אֲבֹתַי֙ חֲרֵבָ֔ה וּשְׁעָרֶ֖יהָ אֻכְּל֥וּ בָאֵֽשׁ׃

KJV ⁴ Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

WLC ⁴ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לִי֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ עַל־ מַה־ זֶּ֖ה אַתָּ֣ה מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ וָֽאֶתְפַּלֵּ֔ל אֶל־ אֱלֹהֵ֖י הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃

KJV ⁵ And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.

OST ⁵ Puis je dis au roi: Si le roi le trouve bon, et si ton serviteur t'est agréable, envoie-moi en Juda, vers la ville des tombeaux de mes pères, pour la rebâtir.

WLC ⁵ וָאֹמַ֣ר לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אִם־ עַל־ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ ט֔וֹב וְאִם־ יִיטַ֥ב עַבְדְּךָ֖ לְפָנֶ֑יךָ אֲשֶׁ֧ר תִּשְׁלָחֵ֣נִי אֶל־ יְהוּדָ֗ה אֶל־ עִ֛יר קִבְר֥וֹת אֲבֹתַ֖י וְאֶבְנֶֽנָּה׃

KJV ⁶ And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

OST ⁶ Et le roi, ainsi que sa femme qui était assise auprès de lui, me dit: Combien durerait ton voyage, et quand reviendrais-tu? Je lui précisai le temps, et le roi trouva bon de m'envoyer.

WLC ⁶ וַיֹּאמֶר֩ לִ֨י הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ וְהַשֵּׁגַ֣ל ׀ יוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת אֶצְל֗וֹ עַד־ מָתַ֛י יִהְיֶ֥ה מַֽהֲלָכֲךָ֖ וּמָתַ֣י תָּשׁ֑וּב וַיִּיטַ֤ב לִפְנֵֽי־ הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֔נִי וָֽאֶתְּנָ֥ה ל֖וֹ זְמָֽן׃

KJV ⁷ Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;

OST ⁷ Et je dis au roi: Si le roi le trouve bon, qu'on me donne des lettres pour les gouverneurs d'au delà du fleuve, afin qu'ils me laissent passer jusqu'à ce que j'arrive en Juda;

WLC ⁷ וָאוֹמַר֮ לַמֶּלֶךְ֒ אִם־ עַל־ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ ט֔וֹב אִגְּרוֹת֙ יִתְּנוּ־ לִ֔י עַֽל־ פַּחֲו֖וֹת עֵ֣בֶר הַנָּהָ֑ר אֲשֶׁר֙ יַעֲבִיר֔וּנִי עַ֥ד אֲשֶׁר־ אָב֖וֹא אֶל־ יְהוּדָֽה׃

KJV ⁸ And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

OST ⁸ Et des lettres pour Asaph, le garde du parc du roi, afin qu'il me donne du bois pour la charpente des portes de la forteresse, attenant à la maison de Dieu, pour les murailles de la ville, et pour la maison dans laquelle j'entrerai. Et le roi me l'accorda selon que la bonne main de mon Dieu était sur moi.

WLC ⁸ וְאִגֶּ֡רֶת אֶל־ אָסָף֩ שֹׁמֵ֨ר הַפַּרְדֵּ֜ס אֲשֶׁ֣ר לַמֶּ֗לֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִתֶּן־ לִ֣י עֵצִ֡ים לְ֠קָרוֹת אֶת־ שַׁעֲרֵ֨י הַבִּירָ֤ה אֲשֶׁר־ לַבַּ֙יִת֙ וּלְחוֹמַ֣ת הָעִ֔יר וְלַבַּ֖יִת אֲשֶׁר־ אָב֣וֹא אֵלָ֑יו וַיִּתֶּן־ לִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ כְּיַד־ אֱלֹהַ֖י הַטּוֹבָ֥ה עָלָֽי׃
