KJV ¹ My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:

KJV ² That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.

LSG ² Afin que tu conserves la réflexion, Et que tes lèvres gardent la connaissance.

KJV ³ For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:

LSG ³ Car les lèvres de l'étrangère distillent le miel, Et son palais est plus doux que l'huile ;

KJV ⁴ But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

LSG ⁴ Mais à la fin elle est amère comme l'absinthe, Aiguë comme un glaive à deux tranchants.

KJV ⁵ Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.

LSG ⁵ Ses pieds descendent vers la mort, Ses pas atteignent le séjour des morts.

KJV ⁶ Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them.

LSG ⁶ Afin de ne pas considérer le chemin de la vie, Elle est errante dans ses voies, elle ne sait où elle va.

KJV ⁷ Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.

LSG ⁷ Et maintenant, mes fils, écoutez-moi, Et ne vous écartez pas des paroles de ma bouche.

KJV ⁸ Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:

LSG ⁸ Éloigne-toi du chemin qui conduit chez elle, Et ne t'approche pas de la porte de sa maison,

KJV ⁹ Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel:

LSG ⁹ De peur que tu ne livres ta vigueur à d'autres, Et tes années à un homme cruel ;

KJV ¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger;

LSG ¹⁰ De peur que des étrangers ne se rassasient de ton bien, Et du produit de ton travail dans la maison d'autrui ;

KJV ¹¹ And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

LSG ¹¹ De peur que tu ne gémisses, près de ta fin, Quand ta chair et ton corps se consumeront,

KJV ¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

LSG ¹² Et que tu ne dises: Comment donc ai-je pu haïr la correction, Et comment mon coeur a-t-il dédaigné la réprimande ?

KJV ¹³ And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!

LSG ¹³ Comment ai-je pu ne pas écouter la voix de mes maîtres, Ne pas prêter l'oreille à ceux qui m'instruisaient ?

KJV ¹⁴ I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.

LSG ¹⁴ Peu s'en est fallu que je n'aie éprouvé tous les malheurs Au milieu du peuple et de l'assemblée.

KJV ¹⁵ Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.

LSG ¹⁵ Bois les eaux de ta citerne, Les eaux qui sortent de ton puits.

KJV ¹⁶ Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.

LSG ¹⁶ Tes sources doivent-elles se répandre au dehors ? Tes ruisseaux doivent ils couler sur les places publiques ?

KJV ¹⁷ Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee.

LSG ¹⁷ Qu'ils soient pour toi seul, Et non pour des étrangers avec toi.

KJV ¹⁸ Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.

LSG ¹⁸ Que ta source soit bénie, Et fais ta joie de la femme de ta jeunesse,

KJV ¹⁹ Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.

LSG ¹⁹ Biche des amours, gazelle pleine de grâce: Sois en tout temps enivré de ses charmes, Sans cesse épris de son amour.

KJV ²⁰ And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

LSG ²⁰ Et pourquoi, mon fils, serais-tu épris d'une étrangère, Et embrasserais-tu le sein d'une inconnue ?

KJV ²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.

LSG ²¹ Car les voies de l'homme sont devant les yeux de l'Éternel, Qui observe tous ses sentiers.

KJV ²² His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.

LSG ²² Le méchant est pris dans ses propres iniquités, Il est saisi par les liens de son péché.

KJV ²³ He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

LSG ²³ Il mourra faute d'instruction, Il chancellera par l'excès de sa folie.

KJV ¹ My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,

LSG ¹ Mon fils, si tu as cautionné ton prochain, Si tu t'es engagé pour autrui,

KJV ² Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.

LSG ² Si tu es enlacé par les paroles de ta bouche, Si tu es pris par les paroles de ta bouche,

KJV ³ Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.

LSG ³ Fais donc ceci, mon fils, dégage-toi, Puisque tu es tombé au pouvoir de ton prochain ; Va, prosterne-toi, et fais des instances auprès de lui ;

KJV ⁴ Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.

LSG ⁴ Ne donne ni sommeil à tes yeux, Ni assoupissement à tes paupières ;

KJV ⁵ Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

LSG ⁵ Dégage-toi comme la gazelle de la main du chasseur, Comme l'oiseau de la main de l'oiseleur.

KJV ⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

LSG ⁶ Va vers la fourmi, paresseux ; Considère ses voies, et deviens sage.

KJV ⁷ Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,

LSG ⁷ Elle n'a ni chef, Ni inspecteur, ni maître ;

KJV ⁸ Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.

LSG ⁸ Elle prépare en été sa nourriture, Elle amasse pendant la moisson de quoi manger.

KJV ⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

LSG ⁹ Paresseux, jusqu'à quand seras-tu couché ? Quand te lèveras-tu de ton sommeil ?

KJV ¹⁰ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

LSG ¹⁰ Un peu de sommeil, un peu d'assoupissement, Un peu croiser les mains pour dormir !...

KJV ¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

LSG ¹¹ Et la pauvreté te surprendra, comme un rôdeur, Et la disette, comme un homme en armes.

KJV ¹² A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.

LSG ¹² L'homme pervers, l'homme inique, Marche la fausseté dans la bouche ;

KJV ¹³ He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;

LSG ¹³ Il cligne des yeux, parle du pied, Fait des signes avec les doigts ;

KJV ¹⁴ Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.

LSG ¹⁴ La perversité est dans son coeur, Il médite le mal en tout temps, Il excite des querelles.

KJV ¹⁵ Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.

LSG ¹⁵ Aussi sa ruine arrivera-t-elle subitement ; Il sera brisé tout d'un coup, et sans remède.

KJV ¹⁶ These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

LSG ¹⁶ Il y a six choses que hait l'Éternel, Et même sept qu'il a en horreur ;

KJV ¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

LSG ¹⁷ Les yeux hautains, la langue menteuse, Les mains qui répandent le sang innocent,

KJV ¹⁸ An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

LSG ¹⁸ Le coeur qui médite des projets iniques, Les pieds qui se hâtent de courir au mal,

KJV ¹⁹ A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

LSG ¹⁹ Le faux témoin qui dit des mensonges, Et celui qui excite des querelles entre frères.

KJV ²⁰ My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

LSG ²⁰ Mon fils, garde les préceptes de ton père, Et ne rejette pas l'enseignement de ta mère.

KJV ²¹ Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.

LSG ²¹ Lie-les constamment sur ton coeur, Attache-les à ton cou.

KJV ²² When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

LSG ²² Ils te dirigeront dans ta marche, Ils te garderont sur ta couche, Ils te parleront à ton réveil.

KJV ²³ For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

LSG ²³ Car le précepte est une lampe, et l'enseignement une lumière, Et les avertissements de la correction sont le chemin de la vie:

KJV ²⁴ To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

LSG ²⁴ Ils te préserveront de la femme corrompue, De la langue doucereuse de l'étrangère.

KJV ²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.

LSG ²⁵ Ne la convoite pas dans ton coeur pour sa beauté, Et ne te laisse pas séduire par ses paupières.

KJV ²⁶ For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adultress will hunt for the precious life.

LSG ²⁶ Car pour la femme prostituée on se réduit à un morceau de pain, Et la femme mariée tend un piège à la vie précieuse.

KJV ²⁷ Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?

LSG ²⁷ Quelqu'un mettra-t-il du feu dans son sein, Sans que ses vêtements s'enflamment ?

KJV ²⁸ Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?

LSG ²⁸ Quelqu'un marchera-t-il sur des charbons ardents, Sans que ses pieds soient brûlés ?

KJV ²⁹ So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.

LSG ²⁹ Il en est de même pour celui qui va vers la femme de son prochain: Quiconque la touche ne restera pas impuni.

KJV ³⁰ Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;

LSG ³⁰ On ne tient pas pour innocent le voleur qui dérobe Pour satisfaire son appétit, quand il a faim ;

KJV ³¹ But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.

LSG ³¹ Si on le trouve, il fera une restitution au septuple, Il donnera tout ce qu'il a dans sa maison.

KJV ³² But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

LSG ³² Mais celui qui commet un adultère avec une femme est dépourvu de sens, Celui qui veut se perdre agit de la sorte ;

KJV ³³ A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

LSG ³³ Il n'aura que plaie et ignominie, Et son opprobre ne s'effacera point.

KJV ³⁴ For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

LSG ³⁴ Car la jalousie met un homme en fureur, Et il est sans pitié au jour de la vengeance ;

KJV ³⁵ He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

LSG ³⁵ Il n'a égard à aucune rançon, Et il est inflexible, quand même tu multiplierais les dons.

KJV ¹ My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.

LSG ¹ Mon fils, retiens mes paroles, Et garde avec toi mes préceptes.

KJV ² Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.

LSG ² Observe mes préceptes, et tu vivras ; Garde mes enseignements comme la prunelle de tes yeux.

KJV ³ Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.

LSG ³ Lie-les sur tes doigts, Écris-les sur la table de ton coeur.

KJV ⁴ Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:

LSG ⁴ Dis à la sagesse: Tu es ma soeur ! Et appelle l'intelligence ton amie,

KJV ⁵ That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.

LSG ⁵ Pour qu'elles te préservent de la femme étrangère, De l'étrangère qui emploie des paroles doucereuses.

KJV ⁶ For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,

LSG ⁶ J'étais à la fenêtre de ma maison, Et je regardais à travers mon treillis.

KJV ⁷ And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,

LSG ⁷ J'aperçus parmi les stupides, Je remarquai parmi les jeunes gens un garçon dépourvu de sens.

KJV ⁸ Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,

LSG ⁸ Il passait dans la rue, près de l'angle où se tenait une de ces étrangères, Et il se dirigeait lentement du côté de sa demeure:

KJV ⁹ In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:

LSG ⁹ C'était au crépuscule, pendant la soirée, Au milieu de la nuit et de l'obscurité.

KJV ¹⁰ And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.

LSG ¹⁰ Et voici, il fut abordé par une femme Ayant la mise d'une prostituée et la ruse dans le coeur.

KJV ¹¹ (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:

LSG ¹¹ Elle était bruyante et rétive ; Ses pieds ne restaient point dans sa maison ;

KJV ¹² Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)

LSG ¹² Tantôt dans la rue, tantôt sur les places, Et près de tous les angles, elle était aux aguets.

KJV ¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,

LSG ¹³ Elle le saisit et l'embrassa, Et d'un air effronté lui dit:

KJV ¹⁴ I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.

LSG ¹⁴ Je devais un sacrifice d'actions de grâces, Aujourd'hui j'ai accompli mes voeux.

KJV ¹⁵ Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.

LSG ¹⁵ C'est pourquoi je suis sortie au-devant de toi Pour te chercher, et je t'ai trouvé.

KJV ¹⁶ I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.

LSG ¹⁶ J'ai orné mon lit de couvertures, De tapis de fil d'Égypte ;

KJV ¹⁷ I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

LSG ¹⁷ J'ai parfumé ma couche De myrrhe, d'aloès et de cinnamome.

KJV ¹⁸ Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.

LSG ¹⁸ Viens, enivrons-nous d'amour jusqu'au matin, Livrons-nous joyeusement à la volupté.

KJV ¹⁹ For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:

LSG ¹⁹ Car mon mari n'est pas à la maison, Il est parti pour un voyage lointain ;

KJV ²⁰ He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.

LSG ²⁰ Il a pris avec lui le sac de l'argent, Il ne reviendra à la maison qu'à la nouvelle lune.

KJV ²¹ With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.

LSG ²¹ Elle le séduisit à force de paroles, Elle l'entraîna par ses lèvres doucereuses.

KJV ²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;

LSG ²² Il se mit tout à coup à la suivre, Comme le boeuf qui va à la boucherie, Comme un fou qu'on lie pour le châtier,

KJV ²³ Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

LSG ²³ Jusqu'à ce qu'une flèche lui perce le foie, Comme l'oiseau qui se précipite dans le filet, Sans savoir que c'est au prix de sa vie.

KJV ²⁴ Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.

LSG ²⁴ Et maintenant, mes fils, écoutez-moi, Et soyez attentifs aux paroles de ma bouche.

KJV ²⁵ Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.

LSG ²⁵ Que ton coeur ne se détourne pas vers les voies d'une telle femme, Ne t'égare pas dans ses sentiers.

KJV ²⁶ For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.

LSG ²⁶ Car elle a fait tomber beaucoup de victimes, Et ils sont nombreux, tous ceux qu'elle a tués.

KJV ²⁷ Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

LSG ²⁷ Sa maison, c'est le chemin du séjour des morts ; Il descend vers les demeures de la mort.
