¹ Or, un jour, il arriva que les fils de Dieu vinrent se présenter devant l'Éternel, et Satan aussi vint au milieu d'eux se présenter devant l'Éternel.
² Et l'Éternel dit à Satan : D'où viens-tu ? Et Satan répondit à l'Éternel et dit : De courir çà et là sur la terre et de m'y promener.
³ Et l'Éternel dit à Satan : As-tu considéré mon serviteur Job, qu'il n'y a sur la terre aucun homme comme lui, parfait et droit, craignant Dieu, et se retirant du mal ? Et encore il reste ferme dans sa perfection, alors que tu m'as incité contre lui pour l'engloutir sans cause.
⁴ Et Satan répondit à l'Éternel et dit : Peau pour peau, et tout ce qu'un homme a, il le donnera pour sa vie ;
⁵ mais étends ta main et touche à ses os et à sa chair : [tu verras] s'il ne te maudit pas en face.
⁶ Et l'Éternel dit à Satan : Le voilà entre tes mains, seulement épargne sa vie.
⁷ Et Satan sortit de la présence de l'Éternel ; et il frappa Job d'un ulcère malin, depuis la plante de ses pieds jusqu'au sommet de sa tête.
⁸ Et il prit un tesson pour s'en gratter, et il était assis dans la cendre.

¹ Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.
² And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
³ And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
⁴ And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
⁵ But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
⁶ And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.
⁷ So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.
⁸ And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.

¹ Or, les fils de Dieu vinrent un jour se présenter devant l'Éternel, et Satan vint aussi au milieu d'eux se présenter devant l'Éternel.
² L'Éternel dit à Satan: D'où viens-tu ? Et Satan répondit à l'Éternel: De parcourir la terre et de m'y promener.
³ L'Éternel dit à Satan: As-tu remarqué mon serviteur Job ? Il n'y a personne comme lui sur la terre ; c'est un homme intègre et droit, craignant Dieu, et se détournant du mal. Il demeure ferme dans son intégrité, et tu m'excites à le perdre sans motif.
⁴ Et Satan répondit à l'Éternel: Peau pour peau ! tout ce que possède un homme, il le donne pour sa vie.
⁵ Mais étends ta main, touche à ses os et à sa chair, et je suis sûr qu'il te maudit en face.
⁶ L'Éternel dit à Satan: Voici, je te le livre: seulement, épargne sa vie.
⁷ Et Satan se retira de devant la face de l'Éternel. Puis il frappa Job d'un ulcère malin, depuis la plante du pied jusqu'au sommet de la tête.
⁸ Et Job prit un tesson pour se gratter et s'assit sur la cendre.

¹ Factum est autem, cum quadam die venissent filii Dei, et starent coram Domino, venisset quoque Satan inter eos, et staret in conspectu ejus,
² ut diceret Dominus ad Satan : Unde venis ? Qui respondens ait : Circuivi terram, et perambulavi eam.
³ Et dixit Dominus ad Satan : Numquid considerasti servum meum Job, quod non sit ei similis in terra, vir simplex et rectus, ac timens Deum, et recedens a malo, et adhuc retinens innocentiam ? tu autem commovisti me adversus eum, ut affligerem eum frustra.
⁴ Cui respondens Satan, ait : Pellem pro pelle, et cuncta quæ habet homo dabit pro anima sua ;
⁵ alioquin mitte manum tuam, et tange os ejus et carnem, et tunc videbis quod in faciem benedicat tibi.
⁶ Dixit ergo Dominus ad Satan : Ecce in manu tua est : verumtamen animam illius serva.
⁷ Egressus igitur Satan a facie Domini, percussit Job ulcere pessimo, a planta pedis usque ad verticem ejus ;
⁸ qui testa saniem radebat, sedens in sterquilinio.
